What a busy start to 2025 the Club has already had. The Club Gathering in January seemed to be a great success with a mixture of old members and new members attending and they had a mix of interests in social, motorsport and historic matters (and sometimes all three of those). It was really good to see members chatting over some food or a drink before the slightly formal gathering took place and again after that had been completed. I understand that some valuable information was readily available to members, particularly about what is required for track events and what is required for historic registration.
We had a well attended Skid Pan Driver Experience at Sydney Motorsport Park to start the motorsport year. From all reports everybody had a great time at that event and learnt a lot about how to maintain a level of control over a car that, in the circumstance that were intentionally created, doesn’t want to do what the driver wants it to do. Such Driver Experience Days are absolutely worth doing particularly for our younger members or the children or, sometimes, grandchildren of members. Knowing how to control a car in difficult circumstances may just save valuable lives in the future.

For all you regular readers out there I am sure as you opened up this issue you noticed something different and could not put your finger on it, or maybe you did notice right away. Yep this issue of Torque of the Town we have updated the font, why do you ask? Well, that’s a great question. To further align ourselves with BMW we are now using BMW’s own designed font. Many may not worry one way or the other but for me keeping that close connection with BMW is very important for me and publication of Torque of the Town closely follows BMW’s publication guidelines, including font design.
Ok enough about font…. I want to thank several people who stepped up to help make this issue come together. Victor Yee, my rock, who is always on the spot capturing the action at events and deserves a lot of credit for what he does. Will Blackman from the BMW Drivers Club South Australia who
February started with a very well run (as usual) motorkhana on the skid pan at Sydney Motorsport Park again so that those members who wanted to go a little further in the world of car control could do so with the added interest of the event being time competitive (and members and their friends do certainly become competitive, but in a very friendly way).
Some of our members also took part in events that, whilst not run by our Club, are of interest to quite a few members. These were a cars & coffee event at Terrey Hills (called a Machines and Macchiatos event) and a BMW display at the Canberra Festival of Speed (in conjunction with the ACT BMW Club). Good fun things to go to.
The Supersprint/Track Day that was held on the Druitt Circuit (the north circuit) at Sydney Motorsport Park was a huge success with over 90 participants. This event gave members who wanted to drive competitively the chance to do that in competitive sessions and those who wanted to experience driving on a race track at speed but without the need to be competing with other cars and drivers the chance to do that in separate sessions. There will be further fine-tuning of this type of event for the future to make them even better.
Lets all now look forward to the events, both social and motorsport, that you will read about in this edition of Torque of the Town.
reached out to provide images to me as well as James Laham who has shared his story with us. Luke Wise BMW Car Club Canberra for his work for the Canberra Festival of Speed which many of our members attended. Last but not least of all Denis Momo for his continued work as Art Direction making Torque of the Town what it is today.
I am always looking for content from club members so please drop me an email at andrew.green@bmwclubnsw.asn.au because this magazine is for club members and I want to make sure it continues to provide coverage of all club events as well as content from you the dedicated members of the club.

AUSTRALIA BMW GT4 Racing
For those who have been following for a while, you might remember back in 2021 when I wrote about the development and design of the BMW M4 GT3, which replaced the BMW M6 GT3 as BMW primary GT3 Spec factory race car. Although we’ve seen the BMW M4 GT3 compete in the Bathurst 12 Hour and numerous international races, we have yet to see an Australian-based team racing with a BMW M4 GT3.
Around the same time, BMW was also developing another factory GT car, the BMW M4 GT4 Gen II (G82), which debuted on racetracks worldwide in 2021. In 2024, the BMW M4 GT4 Gen II (G82) made its first appearance in the Monochrome
GT4 Australia Series, with several Australian teams and drivers, including renowned Australian Touring Car Champion John Bowe, making their GT4 debut.
After several failed attempts to attend a GT race in 2024, I finally made it to the ColorSpec Race Sydney at Sydney Motorsport Park. This event featured two 1-hour GT4 races for rounds 9 and 10 of the Monochrome GT4 Australia Series.
The weekend saw 21 cars competing in GT4 from six different manufactures. In the field a total of four BMW GT4s raced

scrutineering, filling the car with flame-retardant powder. Motorsport Australia granted them a waiver for qualifying, allowing them to strap an extinguisher into the car. However, for the races, the system needed to be replenished. Since

MOTORSPORT NEWS
On both race days (Saturday and Sunday), the weather returned to its expected hot and dry conditions. Without the advantage of wet conditions, the lighter and nimbler McLaren Artura GT4 won both rounds 9 and 10 of the Monochrome GT4 Australia Series.
Several teams mentioned that the BMW tends to be harder on its front tires, making it challenging to find the right balance between wear and grip during the 1 hour races.
Despite this, it was still an amazing weekend for BMW, with Jacob Lawrence and Randall Racing securing the AM Cup title with a round to spare.
By the end of 2024, BMW clinched the inaugural GT4 Manufacturers Ranking title, thanks to the strong performance of the BMW in the European Series. This title was the result of a global GT4 campaign comprising 95 races across 50 events and 8 different series.
The BMW M4 GT4 also uses the same steering wheel. And if your keen to get the wheel for your sim set up it will set you back around $2,500 AUD (if your lucky enough to find one in Australia) or you can get it free when you buy a BMW Factory M4 GT4 for bargain at just over $315,000 AUD.
Above and below: Pit lane can get pretty tight with so many different manufactures filling the grid
GT4 racing in Australia is expected to continue growing as it recovers from its downturn in 2020 due to COVID-19. John Bowe commented over the weekend that it won’t be long before GT4 racing sees a field of up to 30 cars, which would be incredible to witness.
In 2025, the new BMW M4 GT4 Evo will be available to racers worldwide. However, it is currently unknown if we will see the M4 GT4 Evo racing on Australian shores in 2025, as many teams may opt to continue developing their current BMW M4 GT4 this year.

SOCIAL DRIVE DRIVE Hunter
We were lucky enough to have beautiful sunny weather for our final social drive of 2024 to the Hunter Valley. 29 happy members met at the Cowan truck stop at the beginning of the Old Pacific Highway. Freya and David Hogg decided to lead this drive as I had forgotten the club radios! Oops! Freya has a beautiful new black M2, that I gladly followed behind in my Z4M.
The route this day was one that we have frequented because it’s such a nice way to get to the Hunter.
• Cowan Truck Stop
• Old Pacific Highway to Peats Ridge
• Peats Ridge to Wollombi Historic Village
• Wollombi to Harrigan’s Hunter Valley via Millfield (Via Broke is a bit dodgy at the moment, and very narrow for a big convoy!)
Unfortunately we had a LOT of traffic on this run through the fun twisty roads!! Horse floats and VW SUVs who struggled with the speed limit, this tends to happen sometimes. We arrived in Wollombi for a quick stop and a chat, and then continued onto Harrigans for breakfast.
The highlight of breakfast was catching up with my favourite social drive attendees, as well as a few new faces, whilst enjoying the view on the balcony. Harrigans was not my first choice of dining venue as I’ve been there a few years ago, and the food was a bit average, although I consider myself a foodie so I thought I was just being picky! I had another venue locked in over in Lovedale, but they cancelled on me 1 week prior and Harrigans were happy to accommodate a group of our size at short notice.
I am not sure of the quality of the Harrigan’s fare at other times of day, but I found the breakfast to be sub par. They’d packed away the continental options before we’d arrived, and the coffee machine broke and they didn’t fix it (after we flagged it with them)! This is my personal opinion, and others may have had a better experience (I hope), but for me, nowhere in the Hunter Valley compares to Enzo at Pepper Creek. The setting (beautiful historic stone cottage), the food with many locally sourced options, and eggs benedict to die for! I have never been disappointed at Enzo, they also give you a tiny teddy with your coffee, and they serve juice on a vintage Golden Book, can’t argue with that. Try their lunch as well, and book ahead of time.
I welcome you all to join in for the social drives in 2025!

CARS & COFFEE WORLD Fighter
Several members left Sydney early on Saturday morning for the social drive to the beautiful Hunter Valley wine growing region. A lovely lunch at Harrigans Hotel was followed by free time and Saturday evening accommodation at various nearby venues.
Sunday morning saw members who stayed in the Hunter Valley, join members from Newcastle and Lake Macquarie arrive at Fighter World Williamtown and catch up for coffee at the Three Beans Café before visiting the Fighter World Museum from 10 am. Members were able to see full size past military aircraft, smaller model planes, military displays or sit and watch interesting audio visual presentations. Volunteer ex RAAF personnel were on standby to answer questions. I’m sure members enjoyed their visit to this unique display of Australia’s RAAF history.
For those members who live in the wide Hunter Region including Newcastle, Lake Macquarie and the Central Coast, our committee membership secretary David Hogg and yours truly are introducing a member’s only Facebook group called BMW Drivers Club NSW - Newcastle Members Newcastle chapter.
If you are interested, go to NSW BMW Driver’s Facebook page and sign up but only if you are a financial member please, as you’ll be asked for your membership number to access it.
It is our plan to arrange Hunter activities to encourage more BMW members in the Hunter and Central Coast to meet new members with their BMW’s. Members who live in the Sydney area are of course invited to attend these additional functions.
Regards and continue the sheer driving pleasure of your BMW.

HO’ING INTO CHRISTMAS LUNCH
The Members Annual Christmas Lunch was held in one of the most picturesque parks on Sydney’s Upper North Shore, and it turned out to be a truly memorable day. This much-loved event brought together club members for an afternoon of festive cheer, delicious food, and great conversations, providing the perfect opportunity to reflect on a fantastic year.
The day was about more than just celebrating the festive season; it was also about reconnecting with fellow members, sharing stories, and, of course, discussing our shared passion for all things BMW. Members had a chance to admire each other’s vehicles, trade stories about road trips, and reminisce about highlights from the past year’s events and gatherings.
The lunch itself was a feast to remember. A delicious spread was catered by the renowned Chargrill Charlies in Wahroonga, To add a personal touch, some members contributed homemade festive surprises, which were a big hit among attendees. The desserts were particularly popular, offering a sweet end to a delightful meal.
The setting was perfect, with sunny weather, plenty of shade, and a relaxed atmosphere that encouraged everyone to linger, chat, and enjoy the day. It was heartwarming to see members of all ages coming together to share laughs and create new memories. For many, the event was a highlight of the year – a chance to take a break from the holiday hustle and simply enjoy the company of like-minded enthusiasts.
Here’s to a wonderful year gone by and an even better one to come.

Words and Photos James Laham
Hi, my name is James Laham and while I am a relatively new member of BMW Drivers Club NSW having only joined in 2024, I’ve been around BMW’s my whole life.
My dad who is a lifetime member, had while I was growing up, a Golf Yellow BMW 2002 Tii and a Fjord Blue BMW 3.0 CSL. He would regularly go for drives up and down the coast with me and my sister, often ending up around Wollongong and Newcastle. Whilst I wish I could say he still had both, he did end up selling the 2002, though I am glad he still has the CSL which is going through restoration.
As I finished school and tried to find my career, I started a mechanical apprenticeship at BMW Artarmon for a couple of years before they closed down and turned into Audi, I then moved to BMW Sydney to complete my apprenticeship. It’s good to still see names and faces of people I worked with 20 years ago still around to this day when I do see them.
I left BMW as I realised the work was not for me and moved on to a business venture that presented itself. It was creating a mobile application around the time that iPhones were new to market. The app was my cousin’s idea, and I was asked if I wanted to invest and help grow it. We grew that for 12-13 years and sold it in 2023.
So as a gift to myself for having sold that business, I bought a manual BMW G87 M2 in Zandvoort Blue. I fell in love with the look of the G87 from the start. A lot of car guys didn’t like it at first, but I personally loved the boxy look of it as so many cars were too rounded and smooth, the G87 reminded me of the 1980’s with its design. Having ordered the car with cognac leather instead of the standard black leather, it really stands out as the exterior blue and interior cognac complement each other so well.
James’s Father who is been a lifetime member of the club was a huge influence on James. Owning both a Golf Yellow BMW 2002 Tii and a Fjord Blue BMW 3.0 CSL which is currently going through a full restoration.
MEMBERS RIDE
The car gets a ridiculous amount of attention from all ages, whether driving or parked. People will often take video/ photos of my car while I am driving or stopped at a set of lights and it took a little getting used to at first, as I had never had that kind of attention in a car before. I have done some modifications to it, but ultimately, I aim to keep it OEM+. I am not a fan of stance, or spacers or anything that will alter the geometry or the setup of the car. Each to their own, but I prefer a clean look.
The BMW M Performance parts I have added to the car so far are:
827M Black Rims (M4 CSL Wheels), Carbon Mirror Caps, Carbon Antenna Cover, Carbon Air Inlet Ducts, Carbon Diffuser, Floor Mats, Alcantara Armrest, M 50 Year Heritage Door Projectors, M 50 Year Heritage Wheel Badges and M 50 Year Heritage BMW Roundel Badges.
The Aftermarket parts I have added to the car so far are: Valvetronic Titanium Exhaust, Window Tints and PPF around the whole car including lights.
I’ve taken it to a SMSP Track Night once before and with Michelin PS4S (Star spec) on, I was able to hit 174km/h around turn one. Which I found incredible being stock. The car and engine are just such a solid combination. I get excited every time I know I’m about to drive it.
I have no intention of ever selling my car. It is definitely a dream car that I plan to keep and maintain over the years. Glad to be a part of this community and get involved in activities with you all. My Instagram handle is @m2syd, feel free to give me a follow and reach out.
SOCIAL CLUBBING
Let’s go
Club members headed to the Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club for the first of the planned quarterly social gatherings for 2025. The gathering gave members the opportunity to enjoy a social setting as well as a meal together before heading into a small presentation by the committee to outline upcoming activities and events.
The presentation started with club president John Cotter welcoming everyone and explaining that the idea behind the event was to break down silos in the club and give members a chance to socialize and build friendships, which is a cornerstone for the BMW Drivers Club NSW.
Next, club treasurer Ian McLachlan gave everyone a rundown of the current finances of the club.
Membership Secretary David Hogg introduced himself and gave a run-down of current membership numbers as well as the ongoing development of regional chapters for the club. More about this can be found in the last issue of Torque of the Town.
Randall Lumbewe then talked about historic and classic registration supported by the club. This generated plenty of conversation both during and afterward, as it can be a complex procedure at times. However, in simple terms, if the car remains stock and is 30 years or older, it qualifies for Historic Vehicle Registration. If the car is modified in any way, Classic Vehicle Registration is the way to go, with the possible requirement of an engineering certificate depending on the modification. If you are considering either, please reach out to Randall, who is there to help.
Ash Sherry took the stand to give everyone a rundown of all the upcoming social events. Without a doubt, there is so much to list here that I could fill the magazine, but to save you
the read, head to the website to see the upcoming events— there are plenty of them.
Last but not least, Bob Williams took the stand to give us a run-down of motorsport events coming up. A lot of work has gone into these events for 2025, with a number of changes coming into place as part of the club’s efforts to deliver the right events for all members. Check out the write-up on SuperSprint Round 1 and Track Day further on in this issue.
At the conclusion of the information session, members hung around, shared a drink, and chatted. We all look forward to seeing you at the next social event.

HISTORY

Photos (supplied by) Will Blackman
Towards the turn of the century, BMW was really making its name in the automotive industry in Australia. Cars by BMW meant class, sophistication, and of course, speed, with its links to motorsport closely entangled with its design.
Not too long ago, Will Blackman from the BMW Drivers Club South Australia stumbled upon some original press photographs at a swap meet and just could not resist buying them. These photographs captured the essence of BMW in the 1970s, 80s, and 90s, and he was kind enough to share them with us so we can all enjoy them.
Above, two BMW Australia E34 5 series ServiceMobiles are pictured with a Learjet that was most likely owned and operated by Stillwell Aviation. Bob Stillwell was an Australian racing driver who moved to America in the early 1980s to head up the Gates Learjet Corporation. The helicopter in the background was owned by Bob Jane T-marts.
BMW E21 323i with an unknown model beside one of the Stillwell Aviation Learjets. It is suspected that this was part of his promotions at the time Bob Stillwell started a BMW dealership in Doncaster.
To the right, from top to bottom: I am pretty sure everyone who knows motorsport can place the look of a JPS E24 635Csi. It is unknown where this image was taken, but it is believed to be Jim Richards at the wheel of the well-known car. In the mid-1980s, this car dominated the Australian Touring Car Championship.
BMW E12 528i and 318i participating in the 1980 ‘TOTAL Oil Economical Run. The aim of the Run was to provide a guide to the motoring industry, media, and public just what fuel consumption could be achieved on the open road from properly tuned standard cars driven by experienced drivers in an economical manner. The TOTAL Oil Economy Run became an acceptable nationwide standard for open road fuel consumption testing, providing figures which may have seemed too good to be true. But they were achievable if the car was serviced and tuned to the manufacturer’s specifications, and driven in a sensible, safe, and economical manner.

SPEED
If you missed it, a fantastic new event rolled into town in 2024 - The Canberra Festival of Speed. Martin and Peter, the brains behind this big event, put their idea into action, taking a big chance and putting their money where their mouth is……. And it paid off! The inaugural event was a resounding success. As with any event, there were lessons to be learned and a following to develop.
Fast forward a few months and CFOS 2025 is planned and coming in a great hurry!
If you are interested, go to NSW BMW Driver’s Facebook page and sign up but only if you are a financial member please, as you’ll be asked for your membership number to access it.
I received a call from Peter, congratulating us on such a fantastic display. I am proud to say that this is all thanks to our wonderful members and the beautiful cars they were all too proud to show off and did a fantastic job celebrating our club.
Following on from this, Peter asked if we could again assist with a display of BMWs. When asked prompted for what he would like to see….. ///M cars - I agreed and set out to bring together all generations of M3 and whatever else we could manage. Whilst we didn’t quite get all generations on the day, our display was amazing!
This included:
M3/M4: E46, E92, F80, G80, G82
E36/7 Z3M Coupe, E85 Z4M
F87 M2
F20 M140i
M5s: E39, E60
1M3 creation
The iconic Isetta
In addition to the static car display, the track was busier than ever, including some great BMWs from our club and BMW Drivers Club NSW. Special mentions to:
Greg Gudgeon: E24 JPS M635CSi
Jordan Turnbull: M140i
Aaron Domio: E36 325i turbo
Marcus Hon: E92 M3
Ekaterina Savina: F32 435i
Jake Radloff: F87 M2
Thank you to our friends from BMW Drivers Club NSW that made the journey, participated and supported their friends involved. It was great to see some of the lesser known ////M cars come out.
Finally, thank you to everyone that attended and for helping on the day, set up and pack down especially. The day was made more enjoyable with your help! Looking forward to seeing you in 2026, in a new location away from the dust….

BMW M3 CS
TOURING
BMW continues to push the boundaries of high-performance automotive engineering with the introduction of the first-ever BMW M3 CS Touring. This limited-edition model promises to deliver exhilarating performance while maintaining the versatility expected from a touring vehicle.
The world premiere of the BMW M3 CS Touring occurred on the foothills of Australia Motorsport Mecca, mount Panorama during the lead up to the Bathurst 12 hour. This is the first time in 45 years that the Munich based company has conducted a global launch on our shores. This only goes to reinforce just how strong of a connection BMW M have with Australia.
Under the hood, the M3 CS Touring boasts a 3.0-liter six-cylinder in-line engine producing a formidable 405 kW (550 hp) and 650 Nm of torque. With a blistering 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) acceleration time of just 3.5 seconds and a top speed electronically capped at 300 km/h (186 mph), this car brings true track-level performance to everyday roads.
Racing-inspired technologies, such as a rigid crankcase, forged lightweight crankshaft, and a 3D-printed cylinder head core, contribute to the engine’s exceptional power and efficiency. BMW’s M-specific exhaust system with adjustable sound modes adds to the visceral driving experience.
The M3 CS Touring features an eight-speed M Steptronic transmission and M xDrive all-wheel-drive system. Drivers can choose from multiple drive modes, including a purist 2WD option for classic rear-wheel driving thrills. The Active M Differential ensures optimal power distribution, enhancing stability and performance on both road and track.
BMW engineers have meticulously tuned the chassis technology to match the car’s powerful engine. Adaptive M suspension, M Servotronic steering, and M Compound brakes, with the option for M Carbon ceramic brakes, ensure superior handling and stopping power. Extensive use of carbon fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) components contributes to a 15 kg weight reduction, further enhancing agility.
Words Andrew Green and BMW Global
Photos Stephen Page & BMW Global
The M3 CS Touring makes a bold visual statement with its exposed carbon fiber elements, frameless kidney grille, and distinctive yellow GT racing-style LED headlights. Exterior paint options include British Racing Green, Laguna Seca Blue, Frozen Solid White, and Sapphire Black metallic, complemented by a red-highlighted roof spoiler.
Inside, the M3 CS Touring features M Carbon bucket seats, a three-spoke Alcantara steering wheel, and exclusive red CS accents. BMW’s latest iDrive 8.5 system includes a 12.3-inch information display and a 14.9-inch control display, offering intuitive control and access to M-specific digital features such as the M Drift Analyser and M Lap timer.
Deliveries will begin in March 2025 in key markets, including Europe, Australia, Japan, and South Korea, with Germany as the primary sales region. Production will take place at the BMW Group Plant Munich. It is reported that only 550 BMW M3 CS Touring will be delivered to Australia and they are expected to sell very fast.

TRACK DAY
Words Andrew Green
Photos AJGreen Photography
In response to last year’s questionnaire put forward to club members, a new event was created this year. Running concurrently with the SuperSprint was the first Track Day. While the Track Day is run at the same time as the SuperSprint, there are plenty of differences designed to encourage first-timers and those less worried about lap times and more looking to enjoy their cars on track.
The main difference is that all cars participating in the Track Day must be road-registered, fire extinguishers are not required, and lap times are not recorded or scored. This means with very little prep required you can bring your road car, put on a helmet and enjoy the track for a day.
To help drivers become more familiar with the track, the first few laps were conducted behind the safety car. This controlled the pace and gave everyone a chance to get used to the racing lines. Once those were completed the group was left to the track to enjoy.
Now, don’t get me wrong, just because it was not a timed SuperSprint, there were plenty of amazing laps throughout the day. I regularly saw William in his Mazda 2 lifting a wheel as his racing lines got better and better throughout the day. As a matter of fact, I could see everyone improving, getting closer to apexes, smoother exits, and some really impressive laps being laid down.
Even the wet weather did not scare anyone off, with the Track Day group having a wet second session thanks to a small downpour in the morning.
The event was a huge success, with everyone walking away with some great experiences from the day on the Gardener Circuit. With the next Track Day expected on 10 August on the twisty Amaroo Circuit, I am sure we will see another packed field.
