If you’re looking to get the kids outdoors after a long winter, and you have a weekend to spare, consider spending a couple nights under the stars in these family friendly camping grounds, only an hour outside the GTA.

Savvy

By Ingrid Law Narrator Lily Blau Age Level: 9 and older

When You Reach Me (Yearling Newbery) By Rebecca Stead Narrator Cynthia Holloway. Age Level: 8-12

A vibrant new voice for a modern classic. For generations, the Beaumont family has harbored a magical secret. They each possess a “savvy” - a special supernatural power that strikes when they turn 13. Grandpa Bomba moves mountains, the older brothers create hurricanes and spark electricity, and now it’s Mibs’s big day. She ends up finding herself on an unforgettable odyssey that will force her to make sense of growing up - and of other people, who might also have a few secrets hidden just beneath the skin.

A Series of Unfortunate Events

Sarah Plain and Tall

By Lemony Snicket Narrator Tim Curry Age Level: 8-12

Imagine tales so terrible that as many as fifty million innocents have been ruined by them—tales so indelibly horrid that the New York Times bestseller list has been unable to rid itself of them for seven years. Now imagine if this scourge suddenly became available as an audiobook. It’s so sensational, and so irresistible that one might say you are a magnet for misfortune. Begin at the beginning—even if it is a bad one—with the first in A Series of Unfortunate Events, now even more disposable in audio.

Sixth grader, Miranda, finds a mysterious note a tiny slip of paper: I am coming to save your friend’s life, and my own. I must ask two favors. First, you must write me a letter. The notes keep coming, and Miranda realizes that whoever is leaving them knows all about her, including things that haven’t happened yet. Each message brings her closer to believing that only she can prevent a tragic death. Until the final note makes her think she’s too late.

By Patricia MacLachlan Narrator Glenn Close Grades 3-6

Audios for the Road!

MacLachlan, author of Unclaimed Treasures, has written an affecting tale for children. In the late 19th century a widowed midwestern farmer with two children--Anna and Caleb-advertises for a wife. When Sarah arrives she is homesick for Maine. The children fear that she will not stay, and when she goes off to town alone, young Caleb is stricken with the fear that she has gone for good. But she returns with colored pencils to illustrate for them the beauty of Maine, and to explain that, though she misses her home, “the truth of it is I would miss you more.”

REAL BIG R

Victoria Day Fun! This year, Victoria Day long weekend runs from May 17 to May 19. Since 1854, Canada has been celebrating Victoria Day in honour of Queen Victoria the “Mother of Confederation.” The day also recognizes the birthday of the current reigning sovereign. For most, this widely anticipated long weekend marks the end of a long, cold winter, and the beginning of summer fun. We’ve rounded up the best family-friendly activities to plan for this holiday: Spend the day at Riverdale Farms Riverdale Farm is the perfect destination for families. Here you can see cows, horses, donkeys, sheep, goats and many more great animals. While you’re there, visit the Residence and the Cabbagetown Regent Park Museum. The Farm is open from 9AM to 5PM and admission is free. Join the fun at HarbourKIDS The Toronto International Circus Festival blasts its willing audiences into orbit on Victoria Day Weekend, May 17-19. Three days of dazzling daredevils, amazing acrobats, hilarious clowns, and brazen buskers – and it’s all FREE! Head to High Park Zoo A great opportunity to see spring babies is at the High Park Zoo located on Deer Pen Road. The Zoo offers both domestic and exotic animals including bison, llamas, peacocks, reindeer, highland cattle, capybara, and sheep. Come feed the llamas, pet the rabbits, and baby chickens. The Zoo gates are open daily year-round to visitors from 7 AM to dusk. Fun in the sun at Toronto Island Park Catch a ferry to Toronto Island Park for a scenic picnic, hike, or bike ride, or visit the interactive Franklin Children’s Garden. Drop by Centreville Amusement Park, a fun amusement park that delights both children and adults with more than 600 acres of parkland surrounded by rides and attractions. On Centre Island, you can also visit Far Enough Farm, home to a number of different animals. It is located next to Centreville Amusement Park. Admission to the farm and grounds is free. Browse the garden conservatories A wide variety of flowers are in full bloom at Centennial Park Conservatory and Allan Gardens Conservatory.

Both conservatories are open from 10 AM to 5 PM. Admission is free. Prepare a picnic It’s picnic season! Nothing symbolizes the start of summer like having a family picnic on a beautiful day. It’s casual, fun, and easy. Spend time outside and take in the sights, sounds, and smells of nature while enjoying a meal with family and friends! Want a complete list of Victoria Day Events? T.O. Tips! Once the sun sets the night sky will light up with fireworks from Ashbridges Bay, located on Lakeshore Boulevard East, at the foot of Coxwell Avenue. If you want to view the show with the kids, but don’t want to be stuck in a sea of people at Woodbine Beach, step back and catch the Victoria Day light show from Woodbine Park or Beaches Park. The fireworks can also be seen on the boardwalk from Coxwell Avenue to Victoria Park. If you have a boat, you can always drop anchor at the waterfront to enjoy the sites off land.

Bike instead of bus

get active > bike month

Bike Month celebrates cycling in the city What began in Toronto as a Bike to Work Day celebration in 1989 quickly evolved into the largest event of it’s kind in Canada. May 26 to June 26 marks this year’s Bike Month in the GTA. To kick it off, Cycle Toronto invites you to bike to work on May 26. Why not get the kids involved by letting them ride to school instead of take the bus or walk. But, before they head out, consider this pre-ride bike safety checklist: • Let it fall. Lift the bike four inches off the ground and drop it. Listen for any rattling noises, which could be a sign of loose parts.

• Inspect the brakes. Check the break pads (the part that rubs against the tire rim). Squeeze the break lever on the handle and watch the brake pads. They should hit the rim at the same time. If not, it’s time for new ones. • Check the tires. Check for tears and punctures along the sides of the tires. • Spin the wheels. They should spin freely without wobbling or any contact with the brake pads. Before the first ride, give the bike a good clean with biodegradable soap, and water. Happy cycling!

T.O. Tip! If Bike Month inspires you and the family to head out on wheels during the weekend, take a trip to Toronto Island where you can leisurely ride the paths from island to island. The ferry accommodates bicycles and they are also available for rent on Centre Island from May 1 to September 30. 416-425-6062

E H T IN G E LET B S E GAM

Add pancake punch to Mother’s Day brunch! Are you thinking about whipping up something special to serve on Mother’s Day? Why not combine two of her favourite treats to create carrot cake pancakes? Mixed with nutritious almonds, a dash of cinnamon and finished with a delicious cream cheese fruit sauce, the originality is sure to add a special touch and melt mom’s heart all in one bite. Carrot Cake Almond Mother’s Day Pancakes Makes: 16 pancakes

Ingredients Pancakes: 1 1/2 cups (375 mL) whole wheat flour 1/2 cup (125 mL) ground almonds 2 tbsp. (30 mL) granulated sugar 1 tbsp. (15 mL) baking powder 1 tsp. (5 mL) ground cinnamon Pinch fresh ground nutmeg 1 2/3 cups (400 mL) vanilla almond milk 1 egg 2 tbsp. (30 mL) canola oil

1 cup (250 mL) grated carrots 1/4 cup (60 mL) golden raisins Cream Cheese Yogurt Drizzle: 1/4 cup (60 mL) 0% Greek yogurt 2 tbsp. (30 mL) light cream cheese, softened 4 tbsp. (60 mL) vanilla almond milk 1/2 cup (125 mL) diced fresh strawberries 2 cups (500 mL) quartered fresh strawberries Directions In a large bowl, whisk together flour, almonds, sugar, baking powder, cinnamon and nutmeg; set aside. In another bowl, whisk together almond milk, egg and canola oil. Pour over flour mixture and stir until smooth. Stir in carrots and raisins. Heat a non-stick griddle or skillet over medium heat. Ladle 1/4 cup (60 mL) of the batter onto griddle. Cook for about 2 minutes or until bubbles ap-

pear on top. Using a spatula, flip pancake and cook another 1 minute or until golden. Repeat with remaining batter. (Alternatively, use 1/8 cup (30 mL) measure to make smaller pancakes.) Cream Cheese Yogurt Drizzle: Meanwhile, in a bowl, using an electric hand mixer, beat together yogurt, cream cheese and almond milk until smooth and runny. Stir in strawberries. Spoon drizzle over pancakes and top with berries.
