Chigi Tower Unesco’s Heritage
Dive into the charming medieval culture of San Gimignano, called “the Manhattan of the Middle Ages” The medioeval village of San Gimignano (UNESCO Heritage) holds three hundred residences, including one of the most internationally famous towers. Originally owned by the Useppi family, wich later became the property of the family Chigi Saracini family, is now owned by the Giachi Family. The Chigi Tower is one of the fourteen historical towers still left in San Gimignano, located in the Piazza del Duomo and dates back to 1280. The first three floors are covered with stones, with openings to illuminate the low lying arches. On the first floor there is a typical portal accessible via stairs, a legacy of the struggles of medieval life, when they slept in secure buildings with retractable ladders.

Tenuta Torciano celebrates the wine tasting with a feast based on Tuscan foods and oils, matched with the cultural experience of a private tour of the historical Torre Chigi located in the heart of San Gimignano. Property of the Cilemmi-Giachi family, the tower features a complex medieval history and a private collection of historical documents about the Vernaccia white wine, produced by Tenuta Torciano. One of these towers has been adapted as a house-museum, able to conveys the city’s original atmosphere. This is one of the most recent projects of the Cilemmi-Giachi family, now owners of the private residence Chigi open for private guests.

CHIGI TOWER IS THE PERFECT PLACE FOR UNIQUE CELEBRATIONS The table will be set up prior to your arrival, dressed elegantly in lace or satin tablecloth with beautiful handmade decorations. Everything will be set with porcelain dishes, accompanied by napkins, platelets for bread, and trays to serve a beautiful meal. The glasses will come in sets of eight per guest, one for each wine that will be tasted during the most important moment of the evening: the dinner.

The Useppi family was a powerful Sienese family that owned various castles throughout the Chianti region. In 1214 he entered San Gimignano where he settled in the Torre Useppi, which resides in the beautiful Piazza del Duomo next to the Palazzo del Podesta. Among the various prestigious titles that this family possessed, the Useppis were among the various socio-economic groups including politicians at the court of King Ladislaus of Hungary and Bohemia, Knights of the Order of the Dragon, diplomats of the court of the Emperor Ferdinand III and even ambassadors of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, Ferdinando II. When the family members died the official heirs owned by the Palace were the noble Chigi Saracini family of Siena. The last known representative was a patron of the arts, Count Guido Chigi Saracini who was worthy of the virtues of his ancestors. Today, Palazzo Useppi still preserves interior paintings, tapestries and sculptures of great artistic value that are unique to Tuscany: in fact, this is a beautiful building of medieval architecture with elegant and distinctive influences of the surrounding culture.

Nel 1214 arrivò a San Gimignano dove si stabilì nella Torre Useppi, che si trova nella bellissima Piazza del Duomo a fianco del Palazzo del Podesta. Tra i vari titoli di prestigio che questa famiglia possedeva, gli Useppi erano tra i vari gruppi socioeconomici tra cui politici a corte del re Ladislao d’Ungheria e Boemia, Cavalieri dell’Ordine del Drago, diplomatici della corte dell’Imperatore Ferdinando III e persino ambasciatori del Granducato di Toscana, Ferdinando II. Quando i membri della famiglia morirono gli eredi ufficiali di proprietà del Palazzo furono la nobile famiglia Chigi Saracini di Siena. L’ultimo rappresentante noto fu un mecenate delle arti, il conte Guido Chigi Saracini che era degno delle virtù dei suoi antenati. Oggi, il Palazzo Useppi conserva ancora dipinti interni, arazzi e sculture di grande valore artistico che sono unici per la Toscana: si tratta, infatti, di un bellissimo edificio di architettura medievale con influenze eleganti e distintive della cultura circostante.

Pierluigi’s passion and work are reflected in the history of the winery that was founded over three centuries ago, with 13 generations of wine production and experience that flows every day in the veins of the Giachi. Like his father before him, and so on, generations of experience in producing Tuscan wines have taught Pierluigi the correct way to maintain and develop vineyards in five Tuscan properties. This experience has integrated the quality found in all the wines produced by the Giachi family winery, which obtained the highest marks in Italy and, ultimately, a prestigious degree in the wine world.

The Giachi Family & History The Giachi family has been engaged in the production of wine for hundreds of years, since 1720. Bartolomeo Giachi, from Florence, settled in the territory of San Gimignano, land of high-quality grapes. Throughout this period, followed by thirteen generations, the family has always personally managed the business with courageous and very often innovative decisions, always maintaining a fundamental respect for tradition and for the territory in which it operated. To date, the company is still managed by the Giachi family and has been able to maintain direct involvement in the vineyard. Tradition, passion and instinct are the three guiding principles that have led the Giachi family to work tenaciously in wine production. In 2002 to continue the family tradition, where ancient roots have always played an important role in their work, they took ownership of the Chigi Tower in San Gimignano. The historical heritage of the family has added a multitude of values over the years. The company goal has always been to investe in wine-growing land to improve the quality of wine production both in Italy and abroad. Pierluigi Giachi is at the same time the owner and winemaker of Tenuta Torciano Winery, a winery that won five Robert Parker Awards in San Gimignano.

Ad oggi l’azienda è ancora gestita dalla Famiglia Giachi ed è stata in grado di mantenere un coinvolgimento diretto in vigna. Tradizione, passione e istinto sono i tre principi guida che hanno portato la famiglia Giachi a lavorare con tenacia nella produzione del vino. Nel 2002 per continuare la tradizione di famiglia, dove le radici antiche hanno sempre avuto un ruolo importante nel loro lavoro, hanno preso la proprietà della Torre Chigi a San Gimignano. Il patrimonio storico della famiglia ha raggiunto una moltitudine di valori nel corso degli anni. L’obiettivo della famiglia è sempre stato quello di investire in terreni vitivinicoli per migliorare la qualità della produzione vinicola sia in Italia che all’estero. Pierluigi Giachi è al contempo proprietario ed enologo della Tenuta Torciano Winery, una cantina vincitrice di cinque premi Robert Parker Award a San Gimignano.
