O U R M I S S I O N S TAT E M E N T & V I S I O N To sustainably enhance the quality of life of all people in Tshwane through a developmental system of local government and by rendering ef ficient, ef fective and af fordable ser vices.
M U N I C I PA L I T Y H I S T O R Y Our Pas t The City of Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality was established on 5 December 2000 when 14 local authorities which had previously served the greater Pretoria and surrounding areas were integrated.Tshwane is steeped in a rich cultural heritage intertwined with the South African history. For many turbulent decades, Tshwane has played a key role in the political history of South Africa. It was appropriate, therefore, that the liberation struggle culminated in the birth of our democracy at the Union Buildings. The eyes of an ecstatic world were on the city on 10 May 1994 when the people’s president, Nelson Mandela, was inaugurated as South Africa’s first democratically elected president.
Our Present Pretoria, as one components of Tshwane, is the administrative capital of South Africa and houses the Union Buildings. Government plays an important role in Tshwane’s economy, but there are many other sectors that are doing extremely well. In fact, the city has adapted to globalisation remarkably well and has all the elements of a smart city. The new City of Tshwane has a Mayoral Executive System with about 2.5 million residents, and is divided into seven regions. It covers 6 368km² of Gauteng’s 19 055km² and stretches almost 121 km from east to west and 108 km from north to south making it the third-largest city in the world in terms of land area, after New York and Tokyo/ Yokohama.
Our Futu re Tshwane Vision 2055 is a combination of short-term strategic actions and long-term planning directives. It is a reflection of the broad discussions, negotiations, and compromises made during the visioning process. This is a wonderful work in progress and will be reviewed each decade for the next forty years to assess, reassess, and adjust as the city develops. It will serve the following objectives: • T o develop a framework to help us do a better job, to focus our energy, and to ensure that all stakeholders and role-players are working toward the same goals • T o assess and adjust the organisation’s strategic direction in response to a changing environment • T o open a public discourse on the key challenges confronting the city and how together we can
