CREATIVE MEDITATION
for the Real Estate Professional
The real estate world can be an industry of intense emotional and psychological pressure. Deadlines, meetings, employee needs, client needs and a hundred other items on which one needs to focus on a daily basis can create an environment that is not only not conducive to mental well-being, but can be outright detrimental.
Learning to quiet the mind has been the focus of meditation for millennia. While those not familiar with the concept of meditation may instinctively think of yoga mats, incense, and chanting when the word “meditation” arises, there are in fact, many forms of meditation that can integrate quite easily into the daily hustle & bustle world of the busy real estate agent.
First, think about when you are alone each day. Here are some possible times to practice mediation during the work day:
• When driving to the office in the morning
• When driving to a showing or to meet a client
• Before your open house begins
• After the open house
These are just five examples of times when you can take advantage of meditation techniques to quiet your mind and, by extension, increase productivity. A calm mind is a more thoughtful, better tuned instrument.
Here are some examples of meditations you can try.
1 For when you’re driving, download and listen to any number of audio
Guided Meditations available on the internet. YouTube has a generous selection of these, many of which are geared towards success in business.
2 Repeating a mantra can be very calming, particularly when you are trying to rid yourself of negative, self-defeating thoughts. It doesn’t matter what words you choose, as long as you feel good about your choice. “I am a success” or “I will approach all of my clients with love today” are two examples. Whatever works for you and gets you into the desired mindset. 3 Something as simple as listening to pleasant music in your car can be considered meditation, provided it brings you to a place of comfort as opposed to one of spiritual discordance.
4 The most important thing, however, is to take time to find gratitude in everything you do. Count your blessings, be grateful the exciting career in real estate you have built for yourself.
Once you’ve mastered some of these techniques at quieting your mind, you can attempt to find some that work even better for you. Walking, plain silence, or even exercise can have meditative qualities and benefits if practiced on a regular basis.
When you’re truly feeling calm, your clients can sense this. And with this comes the feeling that you can be relied upon to stay focused and calm in any unforeseen circumstances. And in the world of real estate, that’s a highly prized commodity.
LYNN NORMAN
Lynn Norman is the epitome of the “Lake Lady,” and she exudes enthusiasm for the Lake Tillery community she serves. “Everyone knows I focus on the lake,” says Lynn. She recognizes the importance of engaging a real estate agent who has extensive knowledge of the lake and who shares excitement about the area, including the neighbors and hot spots. Lynn shares, “I take them out on my boat, and clients love it. It’s such a great way to tour this special place.”
Lynn earned her real estate license in 1989. She worked with a real estate firm for eighteen years, and in 2017, she made the bold decision to set out on her own. Lake Tillery Properties was born, but Lynn’s calling card continues to be the “Lake Lady.” She specializes in Lake Tillery and exclusively sells waterfront homes. Lynn is an expert in the area, and that gives her an edge in the market. “I’ve lived on Lake Tillery for twenty-four years, “Lynn says. “I know it like the back of my hand.”
With a team of five, Lynn has built a thriving business that focuses on the highest level of customer service. Since 2015, she has been named in the Top Ten Agents for Client Satisfaction each year. Because of Lynn’s extensive and personal knowledge of the area, her business is entirely referral-based. “What happens is that I sell a house, and the clients go back to Charlotte, then they bring their friends to the lake, and their friends say, ‘We want a lake house!’ And they send their friends to me, because I’m the Lake Lady and because they had a great experience.”
To market her listings, Lynn uses a comprehensive strategy that includes wide digital marketing as well as traditional print campaigns in local and statewide publications. With a team of professionals, Lynn uses beautiful photography, 3-D virtual tours, and drone videos to show her listings in the best light. As a Zillow Five-Star Agent, Lynn is able to leverage her visibility on that website to give her clients broad coverage.
What Lynn likes most about what she does is helping people find a home where their family can gather. “It’s exciting when people come from a city, and they want more time with their family,” Lynn says. “It’s exciting because they’re doing it to bring their family together. I love helping them find what they’ve always dreamt of.”
Even though Lynn’s business keeps her busy seven days a week, she still finds time to give back to the community. Involved in her sorority, Chi Sigma, she helps throw fundraisers for the local community, donating the money to art programs and college scholarship funds.
Lynn loves what she does, and she has started to plan for the expansion of her business that will create a sustainable future. “I look forward to helping my agents grow, and I look forward to all the wonderful people I will surely meet,” Lynn says. “It’s exciting thinking about continually living and working on the lake and enjoying time with my clients and their families, as well as enjoying time with my friends and family, too.” It isn’t any wonder why this lady is the “Lake Lady.”
