However, in recent years, there has been a trend that more and more men are seeking cosmetic enhancement through various treatment options. Dr. Jed Horowitz talks about how his practice treats male patients with special considerations and care to make them feel confortable about getting their Cosmetic procedures done.

Demand for Cosmetic Surgery is growing

ccording to a recent study from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), there were more than 15.1 million cosmetic surgery procedures performed in 2013. That’s up roughly 3% from the previous year and the rate of growth doesn’t look to be slowing down. Along with cosmetic procedures, reconstructive surgery is also up 2% from 2013. The reason for the growth has been attributed to better technological advances, better products and the public’s positive attitude towards cosmetic surgery. The ASPS President, Robert X. Murphy, MD states “The demand for plastic surgery remains strong, with our statistics showing increases in both cosmetic surgical and minimally-invasive procedures. Facial procedures were especially robust last year, with more Americans opting for facelifts, forehead lifts, eyelid surgery, fillers and peels. With new devices and products hitting the market each year, there are more options and choices available to consumers wanting to refresh their look or a little nip and tuck.”

Surgical & Non-Surgical Cosmetic Procedures Is One Better Than The Other?

hen you open a magazine, turn on the TV, or check your Facebook newsfeed, you will most likely encounter

some brilliant new cosmetic product or service. Nowadays, we are overwhelmed with a myriad of options for cosmetic procedures that promise to bring our youthful look back. While this is great for those of us who strive to look our best and prolong the inevitable aging process, it can also be a daunting task to decide which one of the million options we face is best for us. The biggest decision of all lies in between surgical procedures and non-surgical procedures. In general, Non-Surgical cosmetic surgery is faster, doesn’t leave any scarring and can be done in just a few minutes to an hour. It usually doesn’t require any anesthesia. Sometime, topical numbing gel is applied to the areas of treatment. Non-surgical procedures include Botox (which removes wrinkles by loosening the muscle tension), fillers (which restore volume loss), chemical peel, laser, radio frequency energy, ultrasound, cool sculpt etc. Besides Botox and fillers, all other modalities are designed to either stimulate collagen growth in the skin and make your skin look rejuvenated, or destroy and shrink the fat cells in certain body parts. There is hardly any downtime after a non-surgical procedure. In some cases, with the help of a little makeup, you can go to dinner with your friends and show off your new look the same night. Coupled with recent advancements in technology and devices, these obvious benefits of non-surgical procedures prompt more people than ever to

opt for cosmetic enhancement treatment. Those who would never consider cosmetic surgery are willingly getting non-surgical procedures done and therefore entering into the world of cosmetic enhancement. However, as wonderful as it seems, non-surgical cosmetic treatments are not the cure-all that some may believe. While the results can be close to that of surgery procedures in many cases, they usually don’t last as long as surgical procedures. Non-surgical procedures typically last a few months and up to two years, whereas surgical cosmetic surgery can last up to ten years. Additionally, periodic repeat treatments are usually required to maintain the effects of non-surgical methods. Also, non-surgical enhancement has its limitations. For an instance, when you have extreme sagging and excessive loose skin, the only effective way to correct it is surgery. When non-surgical methods are

not giving you the look you desire, it’s time to consult your plastic surgeon to discuss the option of a surgical solution. Though non-surgical cosmetic procedures work well with all age groups, In general, they work best for people in their 30-50’s with early signs of aging, like wrinkles, mild skin laxity and mild facial volume loss and droop. As we age beyond our 50’s, severe facial volume loss, jowls and excessive skin laxity occur, and surgery becomes a more effective solution. In the case of body contouring, non-surgical methods are limited to toning and shaping. Surgical liposuction is needed for massive fat reduction to transform your body into a much slimmer version. However, surgical cosmetic surgery does have the potential of visible scarring, which is mostly minimal, but it is still a CONTINUE ON PAGE 8

So, Which Method Is Best For Me?

While non-surgical procedures are readily accessible and effective, surgery is better at correcting severe cosmetic issues and restoring structural changes as a result of aging. It’s the responsibility of your doctor to inform you of the benefits and risks of available procedures involved in both surgical and non-surgical arenas. After everything has been discussed in detail, then you can make an educated decision for your desired cosmetic outcome. So, the method that is best for you is the one that is most

PHILOSOPHY My philosophy on health and fitness is not a fad or crash diet. It is a practical lifestyle focused not on a number on a scale but rather on simple yet effective techniques that are easily incorporated into a day-to-day routine. Successful people are experts at budgeting their finances, so I think of my health as budgeting for my waistline. Like a financial budget, there are splurges and rewards as long as you prepare ahead of time and you’re conscious of the consequences. 5 TIPS FOR SKIN PROTECTION IN THE SUMMER

ummer is here and May was Skin Cancer Awareness Month! Now is the time to start stocking up on SPF. You may be tempted to skip many things this summer and head straight to the beach but one thing you absolutely should NOT skip is your sunblock. Skin Cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States. Over the past three decades more people had skin cancer than any other cancer combined. It’s estimated that over 3,170 deaths will occur in 2013 from Melanoma. Here are a few ways to protect your skin from harmful rays this Summer: 1. Avoid the sun between it’s peak hours. The suns rays are strongest between about 10am and 4pm. 2. Use a SPF of 30 or above. Using SPF year round is a great way to protect your skin from cancer and sun damage. You can also include a tinted moisturizer or BB Cream that contains SPF to your beauty routine.

3. Wear a hat to shade your face. Sunscreen never completely protects your skin from harmful rays, when laying out or performing any outdoor activities it is a great idea to shade your face with a hat or even invest in sun protective clothing. 4. Get regular skin exams by a board-certified dermatologist. Having these exams done regularly is the best way to stay on top of your skins health and prevention of any cancer. If a mole or spot changes, definitely have it checked immediately. 5. Avoid tanning beds! Just one session in an indoor tanning bed can increase your chances of developing cancer by 20 percent. If you are looking to bronze your skin opt for a sunless tanner instead. keep in mind that african americans, latinos and asians are at a lower risk of developing skin cancer but, if they do develop it, the cancer is more aggressive and deadly. Also, common prescription pills and antibiotics can make your skin more sensitive to the sun.
