COMING SOON Song of the Road The Poetic Travel Journal of Tsarchen Losal Gyatso Cyrus Stearns Hardcover | 6.5x7.5” | 192 pages | $24.95 AVAILABLE JANUARY 2013

n Song of the Road, Tsarchen Losal Gyatso, an unsurpassed sixteenth-century master of the Sakya tradition of Tibetan Buddhism, weaves ecstatic poetry, song, and accounts of visionary experiences into a record of pilgrimage to central Tibet. Translated for the first time here, Tsarchen’s work, a favorite of the Fifth Dalai Lama, brims with strikingly detailed reports of divine and apocalyptic visions, as well as lyrical depictions of Tibetan landscapes that vividly capture the spiritual awe they inspire. The literary flights of Song of the Road are anchored by Tsarchen’s candid observations on the social and political climate of his day, including a rare example in Tibetan literature of open critique of religious power. In his introduction and copious notes to the translation, Cyrus Stearns unpacks the dimensions of meaning concealed in the text, excavating the history, legends, and lore associated with people and places encountered on the pilgrimage, fully revealing the spiritual topography over which Tsarchen’s long road carried him. The book includes a number of illustrations, including photographs of the region and a hand-drawn map.

CLASSICS OF INDIAN BUDDHISM

Divine Stories Divy›vad›na, Part 1 Translated by Andy Rotman 528 pages | $24.95

A beautifully translated collection of some of Buddhism’s most influential stories. “The Divy›vad›na has been known since the dawn of Buddhist studies in the West, yet no full translation of it in any European language has ever been published. Now Andy Rotman has remedied this situation by providing a fine, readable, yet accurate rendition of the Sanskrit text, with ‘just the right amount’ of annotation to be helpful to readers, without distracting them from the narratives. The work is of major importance.”—John Strong, chair of the Department of Philosophy and Religion, Bates College

The Classics of Indian Buddhism series publishes widely accessible translations of important texts from the Buddhist traditions of South Asia, with special consideration given to works foundational for the Mahayana.

Coming this spring:

Na-ga-rjuna’s Middle Way The MÒlamadhyamakak›rik› Mark Siderits and Shoryu Katsura 368 pages | $24.95
