ometimes it’s what you don’t write about that gets the attention. When we briefly suspended our SafetyWatch column earlier this year, boy did we hear about it. “I was a little saddened to see that SafetyWatch was missing in my January issue,” emailed one of our readers, a utility contractor in Memphis. “I hope it’s only temporary.” “I noticed that you didn’t include SafetyWatch in your past two issues,” wrote a public works official from New York. “Will it be put back in?” And a phone call from a reader in heavy construction: “Do you know if you will continue to publish those?” Along with the requests, you told us how you were using this column: “I’ve been tearing out your SafetyWatch illustrations, which are extremely helpful with my tool box talks,” a New Jersey contractor told us. “I love that this comes out monthly so I always have something new to discuss with my employees.” “Your SafetyWatch works out fabulous for our safety meetings. I’m always looking for fresh

ways of presenting safety to our employees,” wrote a Michigan contractor. Finally, “do you have an archive of them that I could forward on to my crews?” asked another gentleman from the Montana Department of Transportation. SafetyWatch fans, rejoice. Not only has this column been firmly reinstated, we’re making sure you no longer have to get out the scissors or go to the copy machine the next time you want to share one. Simply go to www.equipmentworld. com/safetywatch where you can download more than 70 past columns organized by topic (falls, electrocution, trenching, welding, etc.). And, as in the magazine, each column comes in both English and Spanish. We’re also glad you recognized the work of Amy Materson, our managing editor, and our illustrator Don Lomax. Amy keeps the message short and pointed – one thing our commenters especially liked – and Don’s graphics help drive the message home. (And as a side note, our sister publication Total Landscape Care and also has a SafetyWatch site that can be reached at www.totallandscapecare.com/safetywatch.) Thanks for letting us know the value of this column.

North Dakota diesel tech program grows 25 percent, adds Komatsu program

K

omatsu America has joined John Deere, Caterpillar and Case in establishing a brand-specific two-year degree at the North Dakota State College of Science in Wahpeton, aimed at channeling techs into dealer shops. In the past two years, the NDSCS diesel tech enrollment has grown 25 percent, and this past September it opened up a 65,000-square-foot addition to its program facilities. Most of the 275 students enrolled at the 125,000-square-foot facility are in a general, non-brand-specific curriculum. “Everyone attributes this growth to the energy sector here, but that’s only part of it,” says Terry Marohl, diesel technology department chair. “Agriculture is also growing, and there’s just an all-around tech shortage in the upper Midwest.” For Don Shilling, president of Komatsu-dealer General Equipment & Supplies, Fargo, North Dakota, it is about energy sector demand, however. “We could easily hire a dozen diesel technicians right now in our locations in North Dakota, Minnesota and South Dakota,” Shilling says. “We’ve had a tremendous influx of business, both from local contractors and from

contractors who have entered the area.” Since 2008, General Equipment tripled the number of machines it sold, prompting the company to double the amount of techs it employs. “Many of our techs are putting in 60- to 70-hour weeks; I’d like to get them on a more normal work schedule,” Schilling says. Savage, Minnesota, dealer Road Machinery & Supplies is also participating in the NDSCS program. The program’s earn-whileyou-learn message will be attractive to students and parents facing the escalating costs of higher education and current job uncertainties: graduate with a good GPA, and 90 percent of your tuition, fees and supplies will be reimbursed. Selected tech students spend summers and parts of the school year working in dealer shops, working alongside seasoned techs. When they graduate, they have a job. “Our placement rate is almost 100 percent,” Marohl says. More important, Shilling says, it’s a job with a future. “A good qualified tech will likely get promoted to service advisor, shop foreman or into sales. And as they get promoted, we’ll need people behind them to take their place.” – Marcia Gruver Doyle

Construction continues to add jobs S

howing signs of momentum after a slowdown from the harsh winter weather seen at the

start of the year, the U.S. construction industry saw its largest gain in jobs since the start of the year. The industry added 32,000 jobs in April marking the fourth straight month of gains. The total number of jobs in the industry now total 6 million, 3 percent higher than the same time one year ago and the highest number seen since June 2009, according to preliminary data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The improvement in April follows a gain of 17,000 jobs in March. That gain was originally reported as 19,000 but the latest BLS report included a revision of the March and February employment totals. So far this year, the industry has added an average of 31,000 jobs each month, a number largely boosted by January’s gain of 51,000 workers. The industry’s unemployment rate fell for the second straight month to 9.4 percent. – Wayne Grayson EquipmentWorld.com | June 2014 11

eet the latest emissions standards while boosting productivity with Caterpillar’s D9T dozer, which features a Tier 4 Final Cat C18 ACERT engine that delivers 436 net horsepower at 1,800 rpm. With a high torque rise of 36 percent, the dozer is able to tackle the toughest material. The D9T carries over durable features from its predecessor, including a mainframe with cast steel main case, a pivot shaft that transfers blade loads directly to the mainframe, a modular drive train with three-speed powershift transmission and differential steering system, a heavy-duty undercarriage with track roller frames and bogie suspended rollers. Design enhancements to the D9T include an aluminum barplate radiator that offers improved cooling efficiency as well as increased corrosion resistance. A new air-to-air aftercooler increases combustion efficiency and fuel economy, and a new air-to-oil hydraulic cooler modulates temperatures to lengthen

component life. An Advanced Productivity Electronic Control System improves transmission shifting performance. The APECS works with the Enhanced Auto-Shift system that automatically selects the optimum gear and engine speed match based on the machine’s load and ground speed. Blade control technology includes Automated Blade Assist, which allows the operator to select pre-set blade positions, and Autocarry, which automates blade lift during carry segments longer than 100 feet to minimize track slip. The Adaptive Load Auto Select system adjusts the blade load based on soil type, moisture content and track performance. The D9T has a blade capacity of 17.7 cubic yards (semi-universal) or 21.4 cubic yards (universal). Operator environment enhancements include a multi-color touchscreen information display, seat belt reminder and sound suppression packages.

SAFE LIFTING SYSTEM

Boost efficiency and safety during horizontal and directional drilling applications with Vacuworx’s HDD Pipe Handling System, which uses wireless remote controller operation to tilt and place drill stems at angles between 0 and 30 degrees without the use of ropes or slings. Designed for use with MC Series lifters, the lightweight unit requires just one worker to lift the drill stem and transfer the pipe into a drilling rig. A 360-degree hydraulic rotator gives operators complete control over the drill stem and enables precise pipe joint placement. Able to handle single joints of steel pipe from 3 to 18 inches in diameter, the system has lift capacities ranging from 1,700 to 5,400 pounds, and is well suited for smaller excavators, forklifts, cranes, wheel loaders and boom trucks. An integrated safety control valve ensures pipe is never dropped. EquipmentWorld.com | June 2014 15

technician of the year By Tom Jackson with Chief Master Sergeant Gabriel Hage

Air Force master sergeant, combat veteran, named AEMP Technician of the Year

M

ost mechanics or technicians, as a general rule, do not work under the pressure of life-or-death situations. But Air Force master sergeant James C. Thomas III is no typical technician. In March, Thomas was named the 2014 Technician of the Year by the Association of Equipment Management Professionals at the AEMP’s annual conference in Las Vegas (see sidebar, page 22). The award highlighted 16 years of accomplishments for Thomas including the maintenance of huge fleets of military equipment in the Middle East and, and in one incident, using his technical mastery to help save the life of a injured civilian in the wilderness of New Mexico.

Lifesaving instincts Currently, Thomas oversees the maintenance of some 970 vehicles and other non-flying assets at Holoman Air Force Base, New Mexico. The on and offroad equipment he manages is used in construction and tactical operations over two states and 52,000 square miles. When Air Force officials at Holoman were notified recently that a solo hiker was injured and lost in the vast expanses of White Sands Missile Range area they sent up a Predator drone to look for the man. But the drone’s specialized refueling vehicle broke down on its way to a rendezvous point, and without fuel the Predator was grounded. It looked like the hiker, who had yet to be located, might not survive. Thomas’s maintenance unit was notified, but he quickly realized his team didn’t have enough time to drive out across the desert and fix the vehicle. Instead, he got the drivers of the refueling vehicle on the phone and talked them through a series of diagnostic 18 June 2014 | EquipmentWorld.com

technician of the year | continued steps. Thanks to Thomas’s intimate knowledge of the refueling vehicle, the problem (a dislodged fuel sensor) was quickly identified and fixed. The refueling vehicle sped off to meet the Predator and the drone was able to get airborne once again and locate the lost hiker before he perished.

In the family Thomas’s talent for fixing things is part Air Force training and part family heritage. “We’ve always been wrench turners, both my dad and my grandfather,” he says. “It’s something I learned at an early age, changing oil, basic maintenance, brake jobs, things like that.” His father used his skills to develop a successful trucking company in Maryland, but when Thomas got to the age where he needed to start thinking about his own career he wanted to take it to the next level. “I wanted to work with all types of vehicles. I wanted to get into the heavy end of things,” he says. His Air Force enlistment contract guaranteed him some type of mechanical training, but when he was chosen to complete the Special Purpose Vehicle Mechanic training, including bulldozers, cranes, construction equipment diesel engines and hydraulics, he was delighted. “That just sounded cool,” he says. In-depth training After basic training, Thomas took 16 weeks of advanced training at the Seabees base in Port Hueneme, California. There they teach basic automotive systems, diesel and gasoline, and special purpose equipment such as cargo loaders, construction equipment and unique Air Force vehicles. That qualified Thomas as an Air Force Level 3 mechanic. From there he moved to his first duty assignment, Dover Air Force Base, Maryland, and completed a program of on-the-job training plus a self-study curriculum of bookworks called the career development course, or CDC, eight volumes that take about a year to complete. 20 June 2014 | EquipmentWorld.com

That gave Thomas certification as a Level-5 mechanic, which meant he could work without supervision. Later, additional training took him up to Level 7 where he was qualified to certify other mechanics.

Maintenance at war During his career, Thomas has completed four overseas deployments, including Iraq and Afghanistan. These involved challenging missions such as convoys that lasted up to 13 days each covering 10,390 miles in Afghanistan across some of the most dangerous roads in the world. For these efforts, Thomas earned the Army Commendation and Achievement Medals – and the Army Mechanic Badge – quite a feat for an Air Force guy. The vehicles he maintained were also able to avoid breakdowns outside the wire, thanks to his strict pre-convoy vehicle preparations. The convoys under his care were safer and more effective due to Thomas’s and his crew’s ability to perform fast recoveries and contingency repairs during enemy attacks on coalition forces. In a country as primitive as Afghanistan, the skills men like Thomas possess are rare and valuable. In 2007 the command at Kandahar Air Force base put Thomas in charge of leading a multi-service repair team that ventured into some of the most remote areas of Afghanistan. Embedded with this Provincial Reconstruction Team, Thomas and his technicians fixed numerous vehicle problems with only rudimentary tools and used their welding skills to help repair Afghan community infrastructure. Mission critical readiness In the second half of 2013, Thomas again deployed to Kandahar, where he was the premier technician and leader of an elite 17-man armored vehicle repair hub for NATO quick reaction

forces. By maintaining inventories of key parts and fielding a team of expert technicians to expedite repairs, his team was able to maintain a 91-percent in-commission rate, a rare feat for combat vehicles. Thomas also led a 35-man maintenance team charged with repairing Special Operations Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicles. His crews’ lightning fast battledamage repairs and field-expedient customizations enabled Special Operations soldiers to move quickly and decisively over severe terrain and capture 49 high-value Taliban targets. Put in charge of inspecting 32 MRAP vehicles to be returned to the United States for repairs, Thomas took the time to carefully inspect and determine which could be repaired in-country and which needed to go back the states. He repaired many of the MRAPs himself, and his careful analysis of the problem saved the Department of Defense more than $200,000 in transport charges.

Up tempo operations In his stateside service at Holoman, Thomas has wasted no time turning his maintenance shop into a highperforming, cost-effective unit. Some examples: • Hybrid technology. Thomas arranged to bring a hybrid vehicle training course to Holoman, a first for a stateside Air Force base. The course enabled him and 17 technicians to

technician of the year | continued earn certification in this complex field. Using what he learned about hybrids, Thomas also developed a first responder training curriculum for emergency personnel on base and helped them procure and maintain the equipment needed to extract people from hybrid vehicles after an accident. • Saving fuel. Thomas was instrumental in installing and maintaining 625 Fuelmaster automotive information and management modules at Holloman, which eliminated fuel misuse and inadvertent diesel-gasoline fill ups. It also saved the base at least $9,000 in tax and fuel system repairs annually. He also initiated an idle-time policy for base fleet vehicles, going so far as to program idle limitations directly into the vehicles’ on-board electronic control systems. This is expected to save the base $18,000 annually. • Root cause analysis. When faced with a series of failures on dump truck bed weld joints in 2011, Thomas used root cause analysis to identify and solve the problem by buttressing the forward bed joints. Repairs to 70 of these trucks world-wide averted several military construction project stoppages, which could have incurred more than $3 million in construction delays. • Tire trouble. In May 2013, Holloman was faced with a critical tire shortage due to manufacturer recalls. Thomas quarantined the affected vehicles and established a priority list based on the most critical missions. By partnering with his tire vendor and finessing the problem, Thomas coordinated 133 replacements in only nine days and prevented any interruptions to aviation training and coalition military research missions.

The war on wasted energy

F

Diesel-electric and hybrid machines are bringing big benefits in the field

or the past decade the drive to reduce diesel exhaust emissions has dominated the headlines. But with the last EPA mandated deadline of 2014 for Tier 4 Final engines here, the war is over and a new front has opened in the drive for cleaner, greener equipment. The new technology trend for heavy equipment is the merger of diesel engines with electric drive trains. Unlike exhaust emissions technology, which currently stops with Tier 4 Final, the diesel-electric revolution is just getting started.

MORE WORK, SMALLER ENGINES What all these diesel-electric and hybrid drive systems have in common is they allow you to run with a slightly smaller engine at a lower rpm. This translates into fuel savings, fewer PMs and longer engine life. But that’s just the beginning. Electric drive systems have an infinitely variable power band. Lug-

ging the engine and redlining the tach become things of the past. Some proponents of diesel-electric earthmoving equipment are also promising that, with all the surplus electric power being generated, they may be able to do away with alternators and electrify the components that normally hang off the serpentine belt such as lube, AC and water pumps, thereby greatly reducing parasitic loads. Cummins officials even hinted that it might be possible one day to drive hydraulic implements with hybrid electricity instead of flywheel powered hydraulic fluid. Manufacturers at this year’s ConExpo-Con/Agg showcased a number of diesel electric and diesel-hybrid prototypes, but also on display were a handful of machines that

have already proven their worth in the dirt. These include Cat’s D7E electric drive dozer, Komatsu’s HB215LC-1 hybrid excavator and John Deere’s 644K electric hybrid wheel loader. The Cat D7E is an electric drive dozer, not a hybrid, since it doesn’t recapture energy from other systems. Rather it uses a Cat C9.3 diesel engine to convert mechanical energy into AC electrical current, which powers the final drives and generates DC current for the accessory systems. Thanks to the electric drive motor there is no transmission or gears in the driveline and the power output and speed are infinitely variable. Alan Quinby, superintendent, Durango Services, Woodword, Oklahoma, took delivery of his first Cat D7E dozer three years ago and has added three more to the fleet. Fuel economy was the company’s primary motivation, Quinby says. “We felt like the fuel savings and the increased production on that particular tractor would probably pay a big share of the labor, maybe even all of the labor Cat D7E

if you figure it all together. We are convinced that they are paying their way,” Quinby says. “The operators love them. They don’t lug down, they just push and the engine rpm changes very little. The torque is phenomenal,” Quinby says. In a full day of work, Durango Services has found its D7E dozers can push almost as much dirt as a D8T while burning less fuel than a Tier 3 D6T, he says. Komatsu’s HB215LC-1 hybrid excavator uses a diesel engine as the starting point in generating electrical and hydraulic power for the machine, but it also has an electric swing motor/generator that recovers energy during the swing braking and can rotate the superstructure of the excavator faster than a hydraulic system. The generator/motor is positioned between the engine and the hydraulic pump to produce electric power and charges the capacitor when the engine is idling. The capacitor can charge and discharge faster than a battery hybrid system and matches the quick response needed for the operation of the machine. 26 June 2014 | EquipmentWorld.com

Dellinger says he typically gets a day and a half, sometimes two days between fill ups. An additional benefit is the good impression the hybrid machine makes on his customers. “It looks good. It’s quieter when you’re working near neighborhoods because the engine idles down a lot. And there are fewer emissions,” he says. “My thinking is that this is the future,” Dellinger says, “and I wanted to get in early. It’s where we’re headed and the right Komatsu HB215LC-1 way to do things.” Miguel Diaz, equipment maintenance supervisor for the Will Dellinger, owner of JW Solid Waste Authority in West Palm Demolition in Charlotte, North Beach, Florida, says his outfit bought Carolina, bought four Komatsu its first Komatsu HB215LC-1 in May HB215C-1 excavators in 2011. “If I 2012 and then two more Decembuy another 200-class excavator, I’ll ber 2013. Getting 40 percent better fuel As far as handling and perforeconomy is what impresses Delmance, Diaz says the HB215LC-1s linger most about the Komatsu are as good or better than regular hybrid. up to 25-percent fuel savings. The machine has four operating speed ranges from 900 to 1,800 rpm but no reverse gear or clutches since direction changes are performed by the electric motor. Boris Campos, plant manager and Ron Karsting, plant maintenance supervisor at Scotts Miracle-Gro Growing Media Plant in Chino,

28 June 2014 | EquipmentWorld.com

California, took delivery of their new Deere 644K hybrid loader November 2013. The company saw the fuel savings and the chance to minimize its carbon footprint as the primary reasons to buy. Although the 644K is more expensive than a conventional loader, Campos says, “I think it’s worth every dollar.” The loader is used to move and

blend raw materials in the yard with a six yard bucket in a high-production environment, 12 hours a day, six days a week. Since November they’ve already put 2,600 hours on the machine. The fuel economy, says Campos, has been outstanding. “We’ve gone from our typical machines getting 5 to 6 gph to our last report which showed the 644K getting 2.7 gph,” he says. In operation, the electric drive gives the loader a hydrostatic type of feel, says Carstain. The engine rpm stays constant, which makes it quiet and keeps the hydraulics at full pressure. The modulation of power through the electric drive also gives the machine dynamic braking thus reducing wear on the service brakes. “On a typical loader

you dig into the pile and throttle up to increase the rpms so the hydraulics can pick up that heavy load,” he says. “You don’t have to do this on the 644K. You just dig in, lift back on the joystick and the power is there.”

Cummins CorePlus

Shown as a prototype at ConExpo, the Cummins CorePlus motor-generator is a retrofit-able component that provides similar benefits to vehicles with electric hybrid systems. Cummins says the device could be used in trucks and equipment, both on and off-road. The system consists of the motor-generator seen here that sits between the engine flywheel and the transmission, and a battery pack that would be mounted under a chassis or in the truck bed. The motor-generator can provide electric power for the machine driveline, ramp up torque in high load situations or transfer excess energy such as braking energy to batteries or other electrical storage devices. Depending on how much battery storage you integrate with the system it could also be used to power peripherals such as the AC system even when a truck’s engine is off. The CorePlus model featured here can generate up to 90 kilowatts of power for immediate use or storage. There is also a smaller, thinner version that can also serve as an integrated starter/generator with the potential of eliminating the engine alternator and powering components like the alternator that run off the engine’s serpentine belt. Cummins says the CorePlus could also be used to power hydraulic fluid in a machine, but at present there aren’t enough manufacturers making hydraulic systems that run on electrical power to make this an application for the immediate future.

Test Drive:Volvo’s new VNX heavy-haul tractor

Volvo designed the VNX with both on-highway and occasional offhighway work in mind.

W

hile many truck manufacturers do long-range market studies to determine if they should add a new truck model to their lineups, Volvo’s approach to launching its new VNX severe duty tractor was a bit more casual than the company’s usual procedures. The VNX story began a little over a year ago as Göran Nyberg was settling into his position as new president of the company’s North American operations. Nyberg had extensive experience with Volvo’s expansive European product portfolio and noticed an opportunity in the North American lineup: A heavy-haul on-highway tractor that could handle occasional off-highway work as well. Volvo has

a large presence in Europe’s highhorsepower/heavy-duty markets. And, in Nyberg’s opinion, Volvo was missing a tremendous opportunity to showcase those attributes to North American buyers. It wasn’t quite a sketch drawn on a napkin. But it was close. And it closely jibed with market research Volvo North America already had in hand. The go-ahead from Nyberg was the final piece of the puzzle: Armed with their assignment, Volvo’s North American engineering team crafted the VNX in record time. The result, says Jason Spence, Volvo’s marketing product manager for long-haul business segments, is a truck that takes the best from the company’s aerodynamic VN tractors and tough VHD vocational truck models and blends them together

into a highly capable truck that handles well on the highway but is tough enough to work on the most rugged of jobsites. Spence selected a fairly arduous route through the Smoky Mountains near Asheville, North Carolina, for our test drive. The gleaming, jet black VNX was pulling a flatbed loaded with concrete blocks, rated at 77,500 pounds; a tough assignment on the steep 6- and 7-percent grades as I-26 winds its way into Tennessee. “But it’s a great chance to show the pulling power this 550-horsepower D16 engine offers,” Spence explained. “And it’s also a great way to show how well our IShift automated manual transmission works in tough terrain with heavy loads.” With a take rate of 71 percent to EquipmentWorld.com | June 2014 33

and steering. Deep wheel cuts helped me easily maneuver the long flatbed behind my test VNX through the narrow mountain roads that started our drive. Despite the big flotation tires under me, I found the VNX to be pleasantly docile on the twisting, turning, mountain roads. Later, at highway cruise speeds, the truck held its place in the lane with little or no steering input. Spence said this was a result of a twin-steering gear design Volvo engineers gave the VNX to insure excellent handling in a variety of road conditions. On the interstate, the VNX quickly accelerated to cruise speed and was a delight to drive. The integrated engine brake easily held our speed in check on long downhill runs with minimal braking. Another

nice feature was the cruise control, which works in conjunction with the I-Shift to maintain desired highway speeds. You can easily adjust your speed settings in mountainous terrain to stay with a preset limit. If you tell the system you never want to exceed, say, 67 mph, the transmission will downshift accordingly and apply the engine brake on downhill grades to keep you in that range. It’s a slick system that reduces driver fatigue, improves brake life and enhances safety all at the same time. Volvo has definitely got a winning design on its hands with the new VNX heavy-haul tractor. It features head-turning, conventional tractor styling with a killer combination of brute power and refined technology all working in together to get the toughest trucking jobs done.

The automated manual I-Shift is standard up to 125,000 pounds gross combination weight.

Know your load limits when trailering equipment The accident: A driver was transporting a wheel loader weighing approximately 65,000 pounds on a lowboy trailer, secured by four 3/8inch chains. During transport, the driver was forced to stop suddenly. The chains broke, allowing the loader to roll forward, over the fifth wheel and onto the top of the truck cab, crushing the cab and killing the driver. The bottom line: A post-accident investigation determined the load exceeded the aggregate working load limit of the chains used in the tiedown assembly, which were rated at 6,600 pounds. Furthermore, at least one chain was improperly attached to the loader, and another was improperly attached to the trailer bed, using the trailer deck instead of the trailer’s “D” rings. Failure to properly secure the loader allowed for both longitudinal (forward/backward) and lateral (side-to-side) movement, enabling the machine to roll over the truck’s cab. Know the load limits – Although sometimes traffic accidents cannot be prevented, properly securing trailered equipment can help ensure you and other drivers are not injured in the event of a traffic problem.

Before you transport a piece of equipment, find out the working load limit of your tiedown assembly. This indicates the lowest working load limit of the entire assembly, including the associated connector or attachment mechanism and the anchor points, not just the chain itself. The WLL will be marked on the tie down material, and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration tables can also be used. The aggregate working load limit must be at least 1/2 times the weight of the article. In this accident, the tiedowns used had a combined WLL of 26,400 pounds; meaning the load could not have weighed more than 52,800 pounds and be transported safely. Tiedown tips – Once you know

your tiedown assembly is properly rated for your load, you still must take additional steps to secure the machine on the trailer bed. Completely lower any attachments and secure them to the trailer, and ensure that articulated machines are prevented from articulating while in transit. The trailer’s “D” rings are designed to minimize chain slack and reduce the possibility of load movement. Closely examine the equipment you’re transporting for readily identifiable attachment points for the tiedown assembly. If none can be found, your supervisor should contact the manufacturer for recommended attachment points. Always remember, the entire tiedown assembly is only as strong as its weakest component.

Remolcando complicaciones

Mentoring spirit enables Pennsylvania contractor to build a people-first company

T

here are two red chairs in Doug Thomas’ office. Sitting in one when Thomas closes the door is not where you want to be. That means it’s time for a serious talk and, fortunately, it doesn’t happen too often. Such talks are re-

Doug Thomas

Thomas Construction Year incorporated: 1985 Number of employees: 60 Annual revenues: $14 to $15 million Markets served: Underground utilities, excavation and site development

served for the most blatant of safety violators at Thomas Construction, located in Grove City, Pennsylvania, and incorporated in 1985. The threat of “the red chairs” is far from the only safety measures in place at the company, but their status attests to the profound respect Thomas’ employees have for their boss, who is equal parts mentor and father figure. Some might think teacher and contractor are on opposite ends of the career spectrum. But Thomas, whose first career was teaching, blends the two careers naturally with a warm personality. It’s his direct involvement and concern for his employees that has built his company into a success. Tim Zinkham, supervisor of en-

gineering services with Cranberry Township near Pittsburgh, says the company is the first he calls when they “get into a pinch. We continue to call them back because of their morals and the ethics they have,” he says. “We have worked with several different crews and foremen. If Thomas is on the job, we don’t have to worry about performance.” And it’s the company’s attention to detail and Thomas’ respect for the process of ensuring safety requirements are met that made the company the clear pick for the Safety Award in our 2014 Contractor of the Year contest.

The growth of a diverse company Thomas graduated from California University of Pennsylvania in 1974 EquipmentWorld.com | June 2014 41

and took a job teaching industrial arts in Grove City. But when a teachers’ strike forced him to seek a more stable living, he decided to give construction a try. “I was going to make a blistering $8,000 a year for that first year of teaching. I didn’t have enough money to withstand a strike so I decided to do a little bit of remodeling,” Thomas recalls. Within six years, he had started his own business. He incorporated the business in 1985 and embarked on his first major project, a housing development. Thomas says. “I didn’t realize what I was getting into. I didn’t understand all the parameters and the cost so I went into it with a little bit of naiveté.” Thomas did a majority of the work himself, from designing and pricing the jobs to driving nails on site. It proved to be a trial by fire, but he persevered and eventually ended up adding an excavation business, Rock Excavation, to his company. He also gained a mentor. “Joe Gaunts was the township engineer and he practically did it on a volunteer basis. He took both 42 June 2014 | EquipmentWorld.com

the township’s perspective and my perspective. It was the kind of relationship that is rare. He wanted to make sure the township got what it needed and that I got what I needed,” Thomas says. Since then, Thomas has also added Pine Grove Environmental, which mediates contaminated industrial sites. He says the company is also in the process of getting the permits together for entering the aggregate business. Today, Thomas Construction does an even amount of work for public and private customers and brings in between $14 million and $15 million each year, serving the underground utilities, excavation and site development markets. “In this region, in order for us to grow to the size we are, we needed to be diverse,” Thomas says.

The burden of regulations When discussing the challenges of running a construction business with Thomas, the usual talk of struggles with leadership and managing a company don’t often come up. Instead, regulations are the aspect of the business most burdensome to him.

“I don’t think I could start this business today,” Thomas says. “It would be too difficult to start it today with all those regulations.” As an example, he cites the Environmental Protection Agency’s National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System permit program, which controls water pollution by regulating potential point sources. “In the past, the NPDES permit was only necessary if you were going to disturb 50 acres. Then it went to 25, then to 12, then to 5 and now it’s down to one. We have engineers now that all they do is chase permits,” Thomas says. “We understand the need of those types of regulations and we don’t want to do anything that’s harmful to the environment. I just feel like more timely responses from the government agencies would be incredibly helpful.”

Serious safety Thomas takes safety seriously. “I don’t want to see our people hurt,” he says. The company has a safety committee and a mod rate of 0.60. Thomas says he is not part of the safety committee because he wants

the process to remain objective. “They’ve done a marvelous job,” he says. The company’s business manager, Tom Friedel, also acts as head safety officer. Thomas says the company has a tool box talk every day with each crew. Every morning the subject of the talk is emailed out to each foreman, who in turn fill out a form at the end of the talk confirming it has been presented. Then each worker in attendance signs the sheet. Thomas funds an annual safety award. All workers without safety write-ups at the end of the year are entered into a drawing. Last year, the reward was $5,000 and this year it’s a weeklong trip to Florida for two. As far as punishment for safety violations, Thomas says there are no penalties. The talks in the chair have been incentive enough to stay on the up-and-up, he says. In 2013, the company had no reported safety violations. Anything less is unacceptable for Thomas.

Lighting a candle Thomas says it’s the quality of his 60 employees that sets Thomas Construction apart from the competition. “I look at character,” he says when discussing how he finds new employees. “All we have to have is someone with a willingness to learn.” He prides himself on the longevity of his employees and assumes a clear role in their development and well-being. “When they land, they seem to stick,” Thomas says. “I think that’s what makes us different than other companies.” The keys to developing such employees: dignity and respect. “They have a family, too,” he says. “If you can help them with their own goals in taking care of their family that’s dignity and respect. And the return for that is an honest day’s work,” Thomas says.

Even the way the company cares for its equipment has a lot to do with the comfort of the operators. “We try to keep our equipment looking good and looking clean. The seat is one of the most important parts of the machine. If the seat doesn’t work, if the heat doesn’t work and the air doesn’t work the operator is ticked off as soon as he gets in the machine,” Thomas says. The company is in the process of developing an in-house training program in order to expand from within. “We can’t sit around an complain that it’s dark,” Thomas says. “We’ve got to light a candle.”

Looking back, looking forward Thomas remembers a valuable lesson from when a major client went bankrupt. “I was afraid that I was going to lose my bonding because it took my cash,” he recalls. “We went to all the vendors and asked them to be patient. We didn’t get our cash but we did pay our vendors. When you work with people over the long haul and you hit a hard spot people will be patient with you.” He also stresses learning how to properly manage people and understanding finance. “I was so interested in building things that I wasn’t paying enough attention to the financial side. Get a good accountant and a good attorney to mentor you through setting up the company right,” he says. “Get a good insurance person too. Bad things are going to happen, especially in the construction business.” The key, Thomas says, is not growing too rapidly. “As long as I’m at the helm we’ll continue to grow a little bit each year. If you stop growing, you stagnate. I think the growth needs to be controlled though. You need to have the capital behind you so you can grow.”

Thomas’s crews work on a variety of underground utilities, excavator and site development projects. EquipmentWorld.com | June 2014 43

WD-40® Specialist® Product Line Keeps the Equipment Turning Smoothly

Central Alabama Asphalt and Construction Co. LLC uses the WD-40® Specialist® line of products for all of its equipment needs. Founded in 2005, the Tuscaloosa, Ala., based company operates several trucks and other equipment that requires proactive, fast-acting rust release and machine and engine degreasing. Most of the company’s work comes from small municipalities and businesses and it’s vital that the equipment be in top shape for maximum productivity. The company also offers paving services for private driveways and lots. Company Manager Marcus Barr says he’s always used WD-40® Multi-Use Products and heard good things about the WD-40® Specialist® product line before using it on the company equipment. “We have a business headquarters, but 90 percent of our time is spent on-location,” Barr says. “We need a product that works well and fast — WD-40 Specialist line of products do just that.” He’s been pleased with their use for their equipment needs such as degreasing, and rust releasing. They use the WD-40® Specialist® Rust Release Penetrant Spray to loosen and remove corroded or rusted parts and the WD-40® Specialist® Water Resistant Silicone Lubricant for a wide range of temperatures and when moisture resistance is important. Barr says the 19 employees at Central Alabama Asphalt and Construction are always running equipment, so it is crucial to have a product on hand that can fix any problem. It is crucial to keep their asphalt pavers lubricated and ready for use. “Our pavers are out in the elements most of the time, so we

need WD-40 [Multi-Use Product] and the WD-40 Specialist product line to keep all the parts running perfectly together,” Barr says. Along with the asphalt paver rollers, the WD-40® Specialist® line is used for lubricating and protecting the roller drums, motor grater blades and the bulldozer’s parts.

Our company is fortunate to have a good customer base, so we are always looking for products that can help us do the best job possible.

“The [WD-40] Specialist product line gives us the peace of mind that our equipment will be in top operating condition,” Barr says. “We are a moving company, and we use the Rust Release Penetrant Spray on nuts, bolts, thread and locks. It plays a large part in keeping us, and our equipment, rolling.” Equipment isn’t the only thing rolling for Central Alabama Asphalt & Construction. Business is also rolling and the company just finished repaving city streets in Marion, Ala., and working on a project at the University of West Alabama at Livingston. Much of their work is done in the Tuscaloosa and Birmingham, Ala., areas, through ongoing business with entities like the University of Alabama and Mercedes. “Our company is fortunate to have a good customer base, so we are always looking for products that can help us do the best job possible,” Barr says. “We depend on WD-40 [Multi-Use Product] and the WD-40 Specialist Product Line. They are the only lubricants I would recommend to get the job done right.” Company: Central Alabama Asphalt and Construction Co. LLC Location: Tuscaloosa, Ala. COUPLERS

LIGHTWEIGHT COUPLER OFFERS GREATER STRENGTH

Increase productivity and visibility for wheel loaders using multiple attachments with the JRB Nexus Cast Multi Pick-Up Coupler from Paladin Attachments. The carbon steel casting design provides 30 percent more strength and up to 11 percent more flex prior to yielding than a fabricated coupler, while still achieving a lighter weight. The coupler offset has been reduced to provide a 26 percent improvement in breakout force impact, and the optimal weight distribution of the coupler provides load stabilization. The JRB Nexus picks up both ISO and 416 attachments and has replaceable ISO pins and 416 collars. A total of 167 square inches of visibility in the center of the coupler improves load management and safety when using fork operations. www.paladinattachments.com

COUPLER HAS RANGE OF SAFETY FEATURES

Complete attachment changes without leaving the cab with Dromone Engineering’s Multi Lock Coupler. Both front and rear attachment pins are independently mechanically locked through the full working cycle of the coupler and both are independently hydraulically released by the coupler, improving safety. Furthermore, both pin locks are visible to the operator to the working cycle. The attachment can only be disengaged with the coupler and attachment is in the crowned position, and the bucket cylinder is fully extended. The Sequential Cab Control System requires three stages to release the attachment, while providing visual and audible warnings. Compatible with machines ranging between 6 and 110 tons, the ranger-style coupler allows for buckets to be attached in either normal or back facing position, provides optimal breakout force for digging capability and has a heavy duty certified lifting eye. www.dromone.com/us

Backup camera buyers guide

Reverse thinking: Having eyes in the back of your bed

I

magine backing out of a parking space in your favorite DIY mega store’s parking lot. You’re concentrating on not backing into the car across the lane, craning your head to see both side mirrors, when you hear and feel a crunch coming from the back of the truck. You tagged another car because the big blind spot created by cargo in the bed prevented you from seeing a driver who decided to back out at the same time. People back into things from time to time on the jobsite, in town, on vacation or even at home. It happens every day. But the worst scenario is backing into or over someone because you didn’t have a clear field of view beyond the rear bumper. That’s why reverse cameras will soon be standard in all vehicles. According to a recent report from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), an estimated 292 people are killed and 18,000 injured each year by drivers who back into them, usually in driveways or parking lots. Blind spots are the bane of anyone who drives a pickup or SUV. Add window tint, a bed topper to a pickup, or a load in the bed that obstructs the view out the back window, and blind

spots further degrade job safety and impact the corporate bottom line. Thankfully today’s high-tech electronics give vehicle operators in all types of work environments tools to provide a second, or even third set of “eyes” to help alleviate such problems.

Vehicle repair costs Reverse cameras cost money, and prices vary widely depending on the quality and the type of monitor used and if the system is a stand-alone or incorporated into another electronics package. But they are nowhere near the cost of having on accident caused because such a safety system wasn’t in place. “Replacing a basic chrome pickup bumper costs $500 or more even if you buy an aftermarket kit,” says Warren Spears, owner of Spears Auto Repair in Long Beach, Mississippi. “A tailgate will cost a customer between $800 and $1,000 with paint and emblems. Then consider the typical insurance deductible is $500 or $1,000.” Spears’ repair estimates fall in line with data compiled by the IIHS, which reports more than a quarter of reported accidents happen when drivers are backing up their vehicles. Even if damaged bumper, tailgate and quarter panel repairs aren’t made on a work truck, the cost of the dam-

ages still comes out from lost vehicle value at time of resale or trade-in.

Camera versus sensors Should you choose park-assist sensors or a rear-view camera? Seeing is far better than sensing. Two IIHS studies earlier this year showed a camera reduces the size of the blind zone of a pickup by about 90 percent while sensors “had a small added benefit of 2 to 3 percentage points beyond the camera.” Proximity sensors use either ultrasonic/radar or electromagnetic technology to warn of an object in their path. Their range is short and at times smaller objects, or flat objects on an angle away from the truck aren’t “seen” because the sound/radar waves aren’t reflected back to the sensors. Cameras don’t suffer from those shortcomings. But for the driver to see, the camera has to be of good quality with the ability to provide a clear view at night (infrared) as well as daylight. Look for a reverse camera that has infrared LEDs that automatically light up the area behind the truck after dark, and one that’s waterproof/weatherproof. The wiring should be equally waterproof, whether a fully wired system or a wireless variety. What area the camera sees is also important: The best field-of-view is in the 120-degree range, with anything less being too narrow for a work truck and wider than 170 to 180 degrees too distorted. The camera’s effectiveness is also dependent on the monitor; the larger and brighter the display, the easier it is to see. Monitor or mirror aystem The type of reverse camera system depends a lot on personal preference, how much you are willing to spend and ease of installation. I like the ones built into the rearview mirror because it’s in a natural location where I look when backing up, it’s stealthy and it doesn’t take up any additional interior space on EquipmentWorld.com | June 2014 71

pro pickup | continued the dash or console. Installation is a bit harder because the headliner has to be pulled loose from around the windshield to run the wiring. But once that’s done the new mirror slides into the same mount as the factory rearview mirror and no one knows the difference when looking inside your pickup. If you like a screen larger than the 4.3-inch-wide version found in rearview mirrors, other camera systems offer either 5- or 7-inch monitors that can be used as standalone on the dash or the camera system itself integrates directly into the truck’s audio or audio/navigation system using the existing touch screen.

There are lots of camera mounting choices, from cameras designed to replace the OEM tailgate handle surround to ones mounted in the license plate frame to ones that can be mounted anywhere there’s a flat surface. (See sidebar “Tailgating camera mount.”) The mounting location will have a lot to do with what camera you choose and how you intend to use it. Again, choice is personal preference. For example, if you want to use it to help line up a trailer on the hitch ball, the version mounted under the tailgate handle is ideal. There are literally dozens of reverse/backup cameras and camera systems on the market including the ones in our roundup on the following pages. The better ones come from wellknown brand names such as those who already make audio, radar and GPS systems. No matter what style you select, having “eyes” in the back of your pickup will be a safety feature you will soon find invaluable.

72 June 2014 | EquipmentWorld.com

The traditional reverse camera mounting in pickups is in the tailgate handle or in the license plate frame. But if you have a camera that is designed to be mounted on a flat surface, bolt it to the bottom of the tailgate so the lens just peeks below the bottom edge of the tailgate face (where its both protected and stealthy). I used two 1/2-inch-thick aluminum spacers between the camera mount and the tailgate core to get it in the right position and bolted it down. Then I ran the camera wires through a rubber grommet under the back of the bed sheet metal to their respective connections. The camera is almost invisible to passerby, yet provides an excellent view of everything from hitch ball and beyond.

How to survive your first month in construction

I

n the March and May issues I described the attitudes and behavior newbies need to survive their first week on a construction site. Now let’s turn our attention to what you need to know to survive the first month. Assuming you show up 15 minutes early every morning, come prepared, and work hard, the big question is what’s next? Plenty as it turns out.

3. Don’t get too chummy with other newbies, and respect your elders and supervisors. Construction inevitably attracts some drifters, people who lie just enough to get the job. These people rarely last long, but if you buddy up to them too much you may find yourself sharing a pink slip when they do get canned – and they will. The old bulls may be gruff and hard to please, but they know the ropes and they’re usually good judges of character. Follow rule No. 2 and they’ll start giving you better tasks and responsibility.

If nobody’s barking orders at you, grab a broom, stack lumber, haul trash.

1. First and foremost earn your keep. Your No. 1 job is to make money for the boss or the company. No business can pay you $100 a day if you’re only doing $80 worth of work. In fact, for them to pay you $100 a day, you’re going to have to provide $150, or more, of value. That extra $50 will be eaten up by taxes, benefits, regulations overhead and all the parasitical demands of the world we live in. And don’t cop an attitude because you think the boss is getting rich off you either. Most construction contractors, at best, eke out 2 to 5 percent profit off your labor. Business is a lot tougher than most newbies realize.

2. Always be looking for something to do or a way to do it better. If nobody’s barking orders at you, grab a broom, stack lumber, haul trash. Newbies tend to be ignored because the experienced people don’t have the time or don’t want to take the time to instruct you. But don’t for a minute think you’re not being watched. Just

keep moving, thinking, finding ways to be useful. They won’t ignore you for long. (Thanks to reader Dennis Lura for this one.)

4. Learn everything you can. If there’s a book about it, read it. If there are night courses at the community college, take them. Get on the internet, check out the forums and manufacturers’ websites. Total immersion. Think about tomorrow’s challenges as you drift off to sleep at night. Understand that a lot of what you learn off the job may differ from how your employers do things on the site. But even so, knowing that there is a different approach is going to help you wrap your head around the job in ways that will eventually be very beneficial. Next time I’ll talk about the skills you need, the thinking you have to do and the steps you have to take if you want a career in construction. In the meantime, tell me what you think. What are your suggestions? Email me: tjackson@randallreilly.com.
