eBay goes after a bigger slice of the heavy equipment pie

T

he online marketplace eBay is ramping up its efforts to sell more used heavy equipment. “There is a step change in how eBay is approaching the business and industrial category, specifically heavy equipment, this year and into 2014,” say Rob Francis, who manages the company’s business and industrial business units. On December 1, eBay launched its Heavy Equipment Center, which hosts auctions every Thursday. The Heavy Equipment Center will promote eBay’s largest sellers and include not only machines but parts and accessories. You can see what’s for sale at: ebay.com/rpp/heavyequipment. “We are focusing on what eBay has always done, bringing a trusted and transparent buying experience, which is a bit different from the as-is, where-is, or buyer-beware model,” Francis says. eBay protects buyers from having a bad experience if they receive an item that is not as described in their listing.

Rate the sellers eBay’s auction model is also different from those of traditional auction companies in two significant respects. The company allows buyers to rate sellers and it also partners with its sellers, allowing them to set up their own eBay Stores on the website. The typical eBay equipment auction is a seven-day no-reserve auction, Francis says. But sellers can have the flexibility to do auctions with a reserve, fixed price and fixed price with a best offer too. “We do not compete with businesses, we are partners,” Francis says. “It’s similar to what we’ve done with large retailers this year. Target and Best Buy are now selling directly on eBay. Unlike Amazon we don’t compete with sellers, we want them to do better.” Bidadoo is one such “company store, and the largest business and industrial seller on eBay. It has grown organically under the eBay umbrella and has sold more than 100,000 pieces over the last 10 years. Full inspection “The information we provide is a full inspection report of the equipment,” says Howard Hawk, Bidadoo’s president and co-founder. “We detail the equipment with photographs. We also do live video and audio of the machine working. And we provide freight estimates and logistics.” Bidadoo offers multiple auction formats, Hawk says,

but most of its auctions are classic, no-reserve affairs. The auctions last seven days and close every Thursday – a common timeline for eBay sellers. The company also works with large fleet owners such as United Rentals, Terex and Genie to stock its auctions with a regular supply of used equipment. “What the eBay platform allows us to do is bring a whole new set of end users to the used equipment world – the guys who don’t find the traditional auction very effective, efficient or transparent,” Hawk says. “It’s a very important decision for them and we give them the information to make that decision intelligently and safely.” – Tom Jackson

Terex sells truck business to Volvo Construction Equipment

T

erex says it will sell its truck business – which includes off-highway articulated and rigid-frame trucks – to Volvo Construction Equipment in a $160 million cash deal. The deal, slated to be finalized in the first half of next year, immediately gives Volvo a rigid-haul product for the heavy earthmoving and light mining segment, targeting the booming oil and gas segment along with aggregates production and road building. “Trucks no longer fit within our changing portfolio of lifting and material handling businesses,” says Ron DeFeo, Terex chairman and CEO. Olney, Volvo CE’s president at the time of the transaction, says the company has plans for both Terex products. “The addition of a range of rigid haulers extends the earthmoving options for customers involved in light mining applications,” he says. The Terex brand will be retained during a transitional period. (Martin Weissburg has been named Volvo CE president, effective Jan. 1.) According to Volvo, Terex’s truck business had net sales of $370 million in 2012, and an operating income of about $33 million. In the first three quarters of this year, truck sales totaled around $172 million. The deal is expected to add 500 employees to Volvo CE’s workforce. – Marcia Gruver Doyle

Volvo sells Volvo Rents to Platinum Equity

T

he Volvo Group has agreed to sell its Volvo Rents construction equipment rental business to Platinum Equity, a Californiabased private equity firm that invests in companies in the construction, commercial and industrial equipment rental markets, for $1.1 billion. The sale should be completed during the first quarter of 2014. Volvo Rents operates 130 stores in North America and employs about 2,100 people. Volvo says those employees will not be affected by the sale. The rental business was formed in 2001 and offers a wide range of heavy equipment and Volvo Construction Equipment will continue to sell products to Volvo Rents under the new ownership. – Wayne Grayson

10 tips for improving your pickup’s fuel economy

T

hanks to high prices at the pump, better gas mileage has become a top priority for all pickup truck owners, especially fleet owners who want to reduce their annual operating costs. Here are 10 tips that guarantee pickup fuel economy will be maintained or improved:

1. Don’t add weight. If saving fuel is a top

priority, go light. 2. Keep tire pressures at the recommended psi. For every 1 psi all four tires are underinflated, there’s a .4 percent drop in fuel economy. You can find your truck’s recommended psi on the door placard. 3. Don’t add a lift kit. The taller, heavier tires will affect mileage, and the higher body creates more wind resistance. 4. Add a tonneau cover. Covering the bed and improving aerodynamics – and a hard cover performs better than a soft – is your best bet in improving fuel economy. 5. Don’t add taller or wider tires. Bigger tires add weight and increase aero drag. 6. Drive with a light foot. Hard acceleration kills fuel economy. 7. Don’t add a winch or heavy duty bumper. Both will add weight and increase drag. 8. Add a cold-air intake and a cat- or turbo-back exhaust. An engine that breathes better is more efficient. 9. Don’t drive over 65 mph. As vehicle speed increases over 65 mph, mpg falls exponentially. 10. Run synthetic lubricants in engines and differentials. Synthetics reduce drag of moving parts. – Bruce Smith EW

innovations | by Equipment World staff

2014 Innovations Award Winners OEMs fielded many good new products last year, but only a handful are truly innovative game changers. Here are five that gave construction contractors better, more efficient ways to work and in general just rocked our industry.

Hilti’s hollow drill bit + vacuum = less mess, faster work, more reliable anchors

C

onventional hammer drill bits generate a lot of dust, forcing you to blow out the hole with compressed air and then clean around the hole with a brush and blow again. It’s a slow, dirty, annoying process. Hilti came up with a system that solves these problems by combining a hollow drill bit with a vacuum that cleans the holes as you drill. Perforations in the side of the Hilti TE-CD and TE-YD hollow drill bits pull concrete dust out of the hole when they are hooked up to a Hilti VC 20/40 vacuum system. And because the holes are cleaned by the hollow drill bit, no hole cleaning is required after drilling. This improves the reliability of the adhesive anchor system with no reduction in performance vs. conventionally drilled holes, saving time and mis-installation of anchors. The idea for the Hilti hollow drill bit emerged from a combination of market research and brainstorming, says Trey Sklar, business unit manager for power tools and accessories. Hilti sells direct with a crew of more than 1,000 sales people who are in regular contact with customers, and this helped shape the discussion, Sklar says. Hilti kicked off the process with what it calls a “technology project,” to research and develop prototypes. The initial experiments presented challenges, Sklar says. “You are linking a drill bit with a Combi-hammer, a vacuum cleaner and a chemical anchor, and we had to make sure all that worked together,” he says. The first round of prototype bits suffered from breakage. The solution was to vary the thickness of the rim on each different diameter bit – thinner for the small bits, thicker for the large sizes. The connection point to the vacuum had to be engineered to be able to withstand jobsite abuse, and the different dust flow characteristics of each different diameter bit and

Dust-free concrete hole drilling eliminates the tedious task of having to brush and blow to clean out the hole. the number of dust ports in different sizes had to be finessed as well. After the technical hurdles were overcome, Hilti went to work on the marketing/communication challenge. “What we found out was that they had to see it to believe it. It was kind of hard to explain on paper,” Sklar says. A round of Hilti customer confidence tests put the product in contractors hands and validated what Hilti had found in its own durability tests. After four years, with all systems go, Hilti established its manufacturing quality control protocols and then unveiled the new system at the World of Concrete in February. “Since the introduction, the feedback from the EquipmentWorld.com | January 2014 19

innovations | continued customers and sales team has been huge,” Sklar says. “The basic response is ‘wow, this changes our life.’” Hilti didn’t design the system specifically for dust-free applications, but it does help meet current and proposed OSHA standards in the United States and WorkSafe standards in Canada, Sklar says. An additional benefit is the speed with which workers can complete holes. “That

wasn’t necessarily an objective, but it is a faster way to drill holes in concrete – roughly half the time compared to the brush-blow-brush process,” Sklar says.

Why we like this product Manufacturers world-wide have been on a “process improvement” kick for a couple decades now, continually looking for ways to perform repetitive tasks better, faster and safer. With its hollow drill bit and vacuum system, Hilti is applying this same kind of thinking in an area where it is desperately needed – construction jobsites and the work done by tradespeople in the field. It’s one small product from Hilti, but a giant leap forward in convenience and efficiency for its customers. – Tom Jackson | TJackson@randallreilly.com

innovations | continued pickups and joined the effort. In 2006 Cummins announced its light-duty diesel program and the partnership with Ram. In 2008 and 2009 when the economy tanked, Chrysler got cold feet and withdrew from the project. Nissan, which had also been involved with the development, stayed in the game and Cummins forged ahead. One of the big challenges was developing the manufacturing processes for the compacted graphite iron block. “That decision had to be made fairly early from a manufacturing standpoint,” says Taylor, “It’s a significant decision to go that route. You have to set up your manufacturing processes to be optimized for those materials.” Cummins felt all along that there would be sufficient demand for this type of lightweight, automotive-style diesel to justify the development of what would be come one of the company’s biggest product launches in years. An independent survey of truck owners conducted prior to the launch indicated to the company that possibly as many as 300,000 customers would seriously consider buying a full size truck if they could

get it with a Cummins diesel. That’s a lot of customers any way you look at it, but Cummins points to the success of their in-line six cylinder diesel option for the Ram 2500 truck. When this was first announced, Chrysler thought they might sell 10,000 a year. They started taking orders in June 1998 and had 22,000 orders from dealers by January 1989.

Why we like this product Truck owners have been clamoring for a small diesel for years – only to be met with a wait-and-see attitude from Detroit’s Big Three. Cummins took the initiative, spending more than a decade and many millions of dollars to fulfill that desire for a high torque, fuelefficient, 1/2-ton pickup. Given the population of buyers who prefer 1/2-ton trucks and the growing interest American drivers are showing for fuel-efficient diesels, the Cummins 5.0L V8 is clearly a welcome development the industry and the market. – Tom Jackson | TJackson@randallreilly.com

Integrated Intelligence. Komatsu automates dozing from first to last pass with the D61i-23

W

hen it came to bringing the D61i-23 dozer to market, Komatsu engineers decided that they wanted to take the next step forward in the evolution of machine control. There are plenty of plug-and-play aftermarket machine control options available, but Komatsu wanted to seamlessly integrate machine control into the dozer body itself. And beyond that, they wanted to make the first dozer that runs fully automated from first to last pass. But accomplishing that goal was anything but simple. “To be able to go from rough to finish grade in auto mode – that the machine can maximize blade load all on its own and it can manage track slip on its own in those rough cutting areas so you get that maximum productivity – that was an engineering feat in and of itself,” says Peter Robson, Komatsu director of Intelligent Machine Controls. 22 January 2014 | EquipmentWorld.com

Komatsu offers two models of the dozer. The D61EXi-23 is a track-on ground model while the D61PXi-23 is a low ground pressure model. Operating weights range from 39,441 to 41,381 pounds with a net horsepower of 168 at 2,200 rpm. Blade capacity is between 4.5 and 5.1 cubic yards.

innovations | continued No blade-mounted sensors To allow the D61i-23’s machine control to pull in all of that data from the blade, Komatsu engineers developed an enhanced Inertial Measuring Unit (IMU+) and paired it with stroke-sensing hydraulic cylinders. The IMU+ does away with the need for blade-mounted sensors like you see on traditional aftermarket solutions and the stroke-sensing cylinders allow the system to know the angle of the blade. That allowed the team to eliminate any cables between the blade and the cab and move the GNSS antenna from the blade edge back to a small cap atop the roof of the cab. However, that presented another challenge: retaining the optimal accuracy third-party antennas get when mounted to the blade. “We had to meet the accuracy of the aftermarket system,” Robson says. “When you go to remove the blade components off the machine and bring back that calculation inboard to where you’re reading where the tracks are sitting as you finish grade and you’ve got the machine’s fulcrum point right in the middle, to move that back and retain blade accuracy was a huge challenge.” Robson says that complicated calculation was solved through a strategic alliance with Topcon and the development of an enhanced logic, or MCR3, controller. “The typical GPS information comes to the MCR3 controller and then once it goes through an output it goes through Komatsu’s controllers as to what to do with the blade and the track slip. Especially during that rough cut process,” Robson says.

Out of harm’s way Another benefit of moving the machine control equipment off the blade is protecting those costly components from damage. “Every little bump is magnified because the blade is so far out,” says Komatsu engineer Jason Anetsberger. Anetsberger notes that the position of the GNSS antenna also makes it prone to getting snagged on trees or being stolen. In the end, Komatsu engineers spent a large portion of the three to four years spent designing the D61i-23 getting all the components into the body of the machine. “The voice of the customer told us for many years how great that would be not to have that out there,” Robson says.

Why we like this product At a time when a skilled worker shortage is severely affecting contractors across the country and impacting their ability to contribute to the industry’s recovery, a machine Robson says is easier to operate than a hydrostatic lawnmower is a big deal. In addition, automating rough dozing helps make every pass count, and making operator skill less of a factor. The D61i-23 can actually be operated completely hands-free until you need to change direction. The machine simply amounts to a big savings in training and operation time. – Wayne Grayson | WayneGrayson@randallreilly.com

he tire market is a precise, refined, mature market that has, for the most part, relied on pneumatic tires for more than a century. Despite the vulnerability associated with air loss, pneumatic tires became the dominant technology thanks to several performance advantages – low contact pressure, low vertical stiffness, low rolling resistance over rough surfaces and low mass per unit load carried. So, when Michelin’s engineers were asked to replicate the basic characteristics of a pneumatic tire without the potential for pressure loss and rapid failure, they asked themselves one question. How do we get rid of the air? The answer was the Tweel, a single, non-pneumatic radial tire and wheel assembly, which replaces the traditional pneumatic tire and wheel assembly. “Our engineers have spent a decade refining the Tweel,” says Jack Olney, marketing and sales for Michelin Tweel Technologies. “They’ve overcome many hurdles to make it commercially available.” The engineers discovered a top-loader airless radial tire was the solution. The Tweel is composed of a shear beam made from steel and rubber connected to a rigid or deformable hub with thin, deformable polyurethane spokes that transfer the load around the circumference of the tread band. It has a simple design that replaces the 23

innovations | continued components found in a radial tire with just six. The tire works similar to a bicycle wheel, with the load carrying structure distributed over the entire volume. Since the whole structure participates in carrying the load simultaneously, no portion of the wheel is unnecessary. The load at the ground is transmitted around the structure where it can be “hung” from the top. It works in a similar fashion to a suspension bridge, says Tim Fulton, head of Tweel Technologies for Michelin. With no air, there are no flats and no blowouts, yet the Tweel retains the performance advantages of a pneumatic tire. The Tweel is even retreadable. Michelin launched its first commercial Tweel, the XTweel SSL skid steer tire, this April. Fulton says it was a simple choice to make. “With skid steers, there’s not a

lot of suspension, no ABS, no dynamic handling system – it’s a simple platform,” he says. “We wanted to start with a construction tire because the need is very high.”

Why we like this product Although we’ve been seeing and hearing about the Tweel concept for a decade, in 2013 Michelin brought the tire to market, and in a construction application. In an industry in which tires are expensive to purchase and easy to destroy, an airless tire that offers the benefits of a pneumatic is a game-changer for contractors looking to lower their total cost of ownership. – Amy Materson | AMaterson@randallreilly.com

WeighSafe Hitch

O

ne of those “why-didn’t-I-thinkof-that-moments” came during a walk through the 2013 Specialty Equipment Market Association’s (SEMA) New Product Showcase last November. Of more than 2,200 new products on display, the WeighSafe Hitch, invented by mechanical engineer and hydraulic expert Kevin McAllister, caught our attention. The WeighSafe Hitch has a built-in tongue-weight gauge activated by a plunger on the ball mount that is pressed when the trailer tongue is connected. The plunger presses the hydraulic fluid through a small channel inside the shank activating the scale. What spurred the concept? His wife. McAllister’s wife said to him at one point, “Why don’t you invent something that will save lives,” which got the inventor thinking about hitches and the issues related to actually knowing a trailer’s tongue weight. He was experienced in using hitches and knew that inappropriate load distribution can cause the tow trailer to fish-tail, potentially resulting in a serious accident. The WeighSafe Hitch is being run through a series of rigid tests by an independent lab that specializes in scale use such as this. Leap Innovations is spearheading the marketing of WeighSafe, which its inventor and marketing agency feels will be a game changer in the towing industry. “The potential market is obviously broad,” says Leap Innovations Verl Doman. “Not only did WeighSafe win SEMA’s ‘Best New Tools & Equipment Product,’ it caught the attention of individual potential users, large distributors, retail organizations and major hitch manufacturers both domestic and foreign.”

26 January 2014 | EquipmentWorld.com

Decisions on its actual distribution to the general public is still in the works. “One thing we learned we from revealing WeighSafe at the SEMA Show is we have a product that appeals right away to anyone who is serious about safety and towing,” says Doman. “This product has a significant marketable differentiation and a very broad appeal.” EW

Why we like this product Up until now the only way to know how much trailer tongue weight was to place a scale under the hitch. Time consuming and need a solid level surface to place the scale. Having the scale built-in allows you to see tongue weight immediately and adjust the trailer load accordingly – or install a weight-distributing hitch if weight exceeds the vehicle rating for tongue weight with conventional hitch. – Bruce Smith | BSmith@randallreilly.com

FLUID CHECK Now is a good time to double check the health of your coolants, lube oils and, if you have it, DEF

T

he fluids essential to the operation of heavy diesel equipment are engineered to work in almost any temperature or climate on the face of the earth. But winter’s cold temperatures can turn prior neglect of these fluids into a current problem. And with short days and cold temperatures outside, drivers, mechanics and operators can be overly hasty in their maintenance routines.

So now is a good time to take an extra minute or two to go over your machines and make sure all your fluids: coolant, lube oil and diesel exhaust fluid (if you’re running a truck or machine that needs it), are in tip-top shape.

COOLANT A 50/50 mixture of the appropriate coolant and water will keep your engine running in the correct temperature band and protect your radiator and cooling system from corrosion. The only exceptions being Alaska and some parts of Canada where

dilutions may need to go up to 70 percent coolant/30 percent water to protect freeze point. This is common knowledge, but after running your trucks or equipment flat out all summer with multiple drivers, operators or service techs, nobody may really know what the freeze point is. “In summer if the coolant gets low, the driver may not care about freeze point,” says Colin Dilley, director of technology, Prestone Technology Center. “He may just throw some water in there or some concentrated coolant or the wrong type of coolant to fix the problem.” In an emergency situation that may be the best thing to do temporarily to

maintenance | continued LUBE OILS Cold weather can be hard on engines, especially at start up. Using the right lube oil or a premium brand and making sure it’s in good condition can go a long way towards getting the best protection and performance out of your engine. Over the last few years improvements to the additives and increased use of synthetic and semi-synthetic oils have allowed truck and equipment owners to use lube oils with a lower range of viscosity. Instead of 15W-40, you’re increasingly seeing 5W-40 or 10W-30 oils speced. “When it’s 30 degrees outside, a 15W30 lube oil is going to flow much slower to all the upper parts of the engine than if it was 100 degrees outside,” says Dan Arcy, OEM technical manager for Shell Lubricants. Getting the oil to all the parts of the engine as fast as possible is the key to providing the best protection to an engine and a lower viscosity oil will do this quicker, he says. “It used to be a myth that you shouldn’t switch between synthetic and mineral-based oils,” Arcy says, “but that’s not true. You can switch back and forth without any negative consequences.” So it can be a legitimate strategy to use a lower viscosity synthetic during cold weather and switch to a higher viscosity and/or mineralbased oil when it warms up. The other advantage to Did you miss us on page 11? low-viscosity oils in cold temperatures is that when you use them it takes less energy to start the engine. “On extremely cold Enter to win $20,000 in fuel. days the battery is going to have less energy to put out,” Arcy says.

keep a truck or a piece of equipment moving. But that can change the freeze point percentages, and unless corrected you could have a cooling system that is radically out of balance. Too high a concentration of coolant can lead to slushing, Dilley says. The coolant thickens – almost like a thin wallpaper paste – which leads to poor coolant performance. The water pump will have to work harder and may leak or suffer shortened life. And the corrosion inhibitors may precipitate out, leaving your system vulnerable to corrosion, he says. Too little coolant could leave your system vulnerable to corrosion, and and the freeze point protection will not be sufficient, leading to freezing and non functioning cooling system blocked by ice. This could even crack the block or split heat exchangers due to the expansion that occurs when water freezes, Dilley says. To check the freeze point, Dilley recommends using a refractometer as the most accurate method. Test strips also work well, but Dilley cautions that some squeeze bulb type test devices can throw off the results when contamination is present.

So using a thinner synthetic or semisynthetic product with a lower viscosity could be a benefit when starting an engine in those temperatures.” Arcy adds that many parts of the country now have anti-idle laws for trucks, some even for off-road equipment. Being able to reduce the battery drain caused by multiple starts in these areas can be a significant benefit.

DEF Diesel exhaust fluid is a relatively new product used in most diesel truck engines built since 2010 and Tier 4 Final off-road engines that use selective catalytic reduction (SCR) to reduce exhaust emissions. The fluid, which costs about the same as diesel fuel, is sprayed into the exhaust stream to chemically alter NOx – a primary component of smog. You have to have DEF to run these engines. Without it SCR engines will derate or stop. The key thing to remember about DEF is that it’s about two-thirds water. “DEF freezes at prolonged exposure to temperatures of 12 degrees or lower,” says Jean Van Wyk, marketing specialist at Thunder Creek Equipment, which makes DEF storage, transport and handling equipment. “DEF is not harmed by this expansion. If it freezes it can thaw out and will function the same. But if it freezes and expands it could cause the container to burst if you don’t leave room for expansion.” The second challenge with DEF in winter is that if it’s frozen, you can’t pump it into the equipment’s on-board storage systems. Most Tier 4 and new truck engines will have a heating element in the on-board DEF reservoir so that any frozen DEF will quickly thaw out and be ready for use. But you should also make sure that your DEF storage and dispensing systems have some way to thaw it out and keep it thawed out during your service visits to the machines. EW

TAKING CARE

OF BUSINESS

A.R.E. bed cap and custom surveyor cargo storage system protect valuable equipment and set the stage for serious work in the field

f there’s one thing land surveyors have more of in their pickups than any other trade within the heavy equipment/dirt-moving business world, it’s the variety of stuff they carry to a jobsite. But unlike your typical contractor’s tools, professional surveying equipment is sophisticated,

expensive and delicate. It needs to be treated with care and protected like a professional photographer treats his camera equipment. There’s also a lot of it; tripods and bipods, theodolites to transits, survey stations and GPS data collectors to levels, prism poles and planimeters. Then there are the shovels, stakes, sledge hammers, brush axes, twine, roll flagging, grade stakes, nails, safety vests, boots, and a number of other tools and gear that don’t require any special care. Each item has its purpose and each has a place within the surveyor’s truck. The challenge is fitting all those tools and equipment in an orderly manner in a pickup bed; a nearly impossible task unless there’s a special storage system to accommodate the wide variety of shapes and sizes. Those tools and equipment also need to be protected and secure: It’s not uncommon for a modern survey crew to have $20,000 in just electronic mapping equipment for a two-man team. Bring along a second crew for a larger job and protecting the valuables in the bed from the bad elements (human and Mother Nature) become a major concern. EquipmentWorld.com | January 2014 33

pro pickup | continued

Professional land surveyors have a lot of equipment that requires a unique storage system in their pickup beds to be efficient in the field. That’s where a high-end bed cap, or topper, and a welldesigned, lockable cargo storage system come into play on Surveyor 1.

Weldon Banks, the manager of Topper World, the A.R.E. and Truck Vault dealer in Gulfport, Mississippi, handled the installation of cap and cargo storage insert.

A.R.E. BED SECURITY Supplying business owners a way to protect valuables in their pickup beds from the elements has been the forte of Ohio-based A.R.E. for more than four decades and they build their bed caps with one goal in mind: high-end quality. The company is the only ISO-certified truck cap manufacturer in the world, and they use OE-quality locks, D.O.T.-approved safety glass and brake lights to go along with DuPont basecoat/clearcoat paint to match the truck. They also offer custom, secure bed storage systems built in partnership with Truck Vault (truckvault.com). That’s why we turned to A.R.E. and Truck Vault when it came to outfitting Mobil Delvac/Ram Truck Surveyor 1’s bed with a locking cargo storage system and bed cap that’d fit a land surveyor’s work needs. CAP AND DRAWERS The topper we slid on our Ram 2500HD 4x4 Crew Cab diesel is an A.R.E. ToolMaster, which is a fiberglass commercial cap featuring heavy-duty side doors with built-in storage compartments, aluminum window inserts for added security, built-in LED lighting in both the compartments and interior, and BOLT locks so the Ram’s ignition key can be used to secure it all. It’s also painted to match the Ram’s factory paint. If one needs to carry longer items, the ToolMaster roof is designed to carry several hundred pounds on an aluminum rack designed just for that purpose. It’s a standard feature on ToolMaster Series caps. But we opted not have it on Surveyor 1 so we could keep the truck’s profile sleek. The cap does have built-in

It has a pair of

Third-generation paver creates own road to success

Chris Fink

Bossier City, Louisiana

Dale’s Paving Year started: 1982 Number of employees: 13 Annual revenues: $5 to $7 million Markets served: Asphalt paving, concrete paving, sealcoating

O

perating the business started by his late father Dale, third-generation contractor Chris Fink knows a thing or two about paving. Performing a mix of public and private work; residential and commercial, Chris is known throughout the Shreveport area as being a leader and a go-getter. With the help of his wife, Tracey, who handles much of the back office work, Chris has taken the company far beyond what his father would have ever expected.

The value of diversification When Dale Fink was running Dale’s Paving, the company handled asphalt projects only. He had worked with Chris’ grandfather WS Bowman, who erected asphalt plants across the country and worked for another local paver, Roy Cook and Sons (papaw Bowman left Cook in 1968). Leaving Cook in 1982, Dale formed his company and began building a reputation as a skilled and meticulous contractor. He laid a solid foundation for the company, developing an impeccable reputation and sticking to a narrow scope of work that he excelled in. As Chris took over the leadership of the company, he had a vision of expanding into markets his father wouldn’t traditionally have been interested in pursuing. Gone were the days when the company wouldn’t branch out into concrete. Chris aggressively pursued clients in the concrete

market, says Tommy King of Builders Supply, who has sold Dale’s Paving concrete for more than 10 years. “He’s just one of those young men who is not afraid to diversify and do what he needs to do to improve in this industry and this market,” he says. Although diversifying into concrete was a natural progression for the business, Chris has also taken some non-traditional paths that, at first glance, might not seem like a natural fit. For example, Chris and Tracey owned River Cities Express Car Wash, a business that wouldn’t seem to align with his construction company. It turns out, Chris performed all the maintenance and repair work for a number of car washes in Bossier City, and he thought he could run one just as well as the next guy. He built the car wash from the ground up, and today it’s a slick, professional operation that complements his contracting business. EquipmentWorld.com | January 2014 39

Successful strategies Chris has his hands full with concrete and asphalt work. “Shreveport is recession-proof,” he says. “I’m so excited about everything that’s coming up; I’ve never been so excited. Every year has been our best year.” His numbers bear out his confidence – although Dale’s Paving averages a 5-percent growth rate from year to year, last year the company experienced a 33-percent growth rate. There’s a variety of reasons Dale’s Paving is operating at such a high level. The company has maintained the stellar reputation earned by Chris’ father, and many of the original clients call Chris when they need new paving work or sealcoating. Dale kept meticulous 40 January 2014 | EquipmentWorld.com

handwritten records on every job. Today, when Chris is called upon to perform work on one of his father’s original jobs, he has all of Dale’s notes and records available. He’s currently working on converting the old paper records to computerized versions. Chris and Tracey are also consummate marketers. Chris explains that he likes to display his work, so he not only maintains a website, but is active on social media sites such as Facebook, and notes that he often receives new business via avenues such as Angie’s List. He also acknowledges he’s both competitive and aggressive. “I baby a project, though,” he says. “I send guys over to check on things without the owner having to ask, and I

kill everyone with kindness.” He’s also careful with equipment purchases, and has carried over his father’s strategy of snapping up good pieces at auction. “Daddy bought at auction,” he says. “I never have any trouble finding and buying good used pieces.” Perhaps one of the most important ingredients in the company’s recipe for success is the relationship the Finks have with their employees. Happy, long-term and stable, the employees take pride in their work. Foreman Mark Tipell, a 25-year veteran of Dale’s Paving, makes no bones about what kind of company he works for. “Our quality of work is just better than our competitors,” he says. “We get calls all the time telling us so.”

Chris repays their loyalty by treating the employees with respect and giving regular perks, such as incentive pay. The crew leaders have company credit cards, which Chris occasionally tells them to use to take their wives out for a nice dinner. “He’s great to work for,” says foreman Dean Coolbeth. “He always gives us what we need to get the job done. He’s also approachable. We can go to him if we have a problem. All of the guys respect him because he spent time with a shovel just like everyone else.” Dale’s Paving even has an 83-year-old truck driver, Charlie “Pop” Williams. At one point, Pop decided to retire, but only stayed retired for six months before he called Chris wanting to come back to work. “He runs circles around the young guys,” Chris laughs.

Retaining the reputation Seeing the value his father’s sterling reputation brought to the company, Chris strives to maintain the same goodwill. He has transitioned that attitude to his personal life, as well, becoming active in the Shreveport community. He became a volunteer firefighter at the age of 16, and is still involved with the department.

Before

He serves on a range of boards, associations, committees and councils. As the parent of three young children – 12-year-old Caeden and 9-year-old twins Carley and Cameron – he’s interested in youth activities. He’s even coaching a youth football team, which went undefeated in 2012 and won the Bossier Bowl. Chris has also served as a mentor to those who want to follow in his footsteps, giving advice to those who ask. “Start small – don’t shoot for the sky right out of the gate,” he says. “I gave this guy advice and he’s taken it and run with it. Although he was scared to death, he ended up with a maintenance and patching business, and told me he was glad he listened to me.”

Chris’s wife Tracey handles back-office work such as payroll and HR.

New challenges Although Chris has made a range of sound business decisions that have enabled the company to diversify and expand, one of his real goals is to take on projects that interest him, saying he’ll take on anything from

a $500 driveway to a million dollar paving project, as long as he likes the job. “I never wanted to do anything else,” he says. “I knew my very first summer that this was all I wanted to do. If you made a cologne that smelled like asphalt, I’d wear it every day.” EW

After

Dale’s Paving handles a range of asphalt projects such as this Olive Garden parking lot, throughout the Shreveport area and across Louisiana. EquipmentWorld.com | January 2014 41

BOMAG, booth 50675 BOMAG will showcase tangential oscillation on its new BW 161 ADO-4 tandem roller. This established exciter system has been optimized in key areas for increased compaction production. Coordination of the exciter system to drum weight ratios is the basis for BOMAG’s tangential oscillation. This compaction technology targets bridge structures, close proximity to buildings, and intermediate and finish rolling applications. With TanGO always directed horizontally, it maintains continuous ground contact and efficient compaction is often evident after a few passes. The interaction of TanGO oscillation from the rear drum and traditional vibration from the front drum provides advantages on difficult to compact asphalt mixes.

Caterpillar, booth 10915 (North Hall) and 1015 (Gold Lot) Cat will showcase the new M Series wheel loaders, which will launch throughout 2014. The series will eventually include the 966M, 972M, 980M, 982M, 950M and 962M. The 972M and 966M are XE designated models, which deliver a fuel efficiency gain of 25 percent when compared to the predecessor K Series. The M series overall offers 10 percent better fuel efficiency. The medium size wheel loaders all feature Tier 4 Final engines, Caterpillar’s Regeneration System, a standard lock-up clutch torque converter matched with engine power and hydraulics and a planetary transmission with a new split-flow oils system that uses multi-viscosity oil.

The Roadrunner has a natural tendency to run level. The long skid bar, working in combination with the dual blades, prevents dipping and gouging. • Dual blade configuration eliminates washboarding, ruts & potholes, spreading & finish leveling all types of materials. • Low in cost, virtually maintenance free. • Optional hydraulic tilt strut for fast and easy adjustment. • Seratted cutting edge available for front blade • Independent grading height adjustment on each side allows operator to create and maintain a crown • 5/8” motor grader cutting edges are top punched thus obtain full wear without time and labor to reverse • Adjustable blades always work at optimum cutting position • Bolt on skid bars have heat treated wear pads on each corner

When IT comeS To emISSIonS and economY, Your IdeaS helped uS make The Grade. and The Grader.

Introducing the new Final Tier 4 G-Series Graders. You asked if our new Final Tier 4 engines could improve total fuid economy, not just diesel consumption. We answered by incorporating cooled EGR and our Integrated Emissions Control system. Total fuid consumption — diesel fuel plus diesel exhaust fuid (DEF) — is lower than diesel fuel consumption alone on our previous model. Throw in extended ash service intervals, choice of controls, excellent visibility, and exclusive Event-Based Shifting, and you have emissions compliance without compromise. See for yourself at your dealer or on our website.

You’re on.
