Our first project, on our first day. This project was to test our idea generating and quick fire drawing. Each part of the A3 poster was to be filled in a duration of a couple of minutes. This project also doubled up as a way to get to know each other as each section illustrated our live in a different way.

//2 Stairway To Helvetica

Stairway to Helvetica was a group project to create a song about a given font. In a group of 4, we penned lyrics for our song about the font, Verdana. We each took turns to come up with one verse. After our performance in front of the class, we were briefed to create a music video. I came up with the idea to do a simple slideshow, illustrating the words of the song.

//3 Brand Me Up Buttercup 8 // Tom Shorey

For Brand Me Up Buttercup, we were partnered with someone we hadn’t met before and briefed to create a brand for them. My partner was Daniel Ilkhan. The logo I created has 3 focal points. “Shit The Bed”, a saying used by Dan. Boxing gloves covering a heart, because even though he can be aggressive, there is a romantic side behind it. And “Est. 1993”, showing his year of birth.

We were briefed to meet at Trafalgar Square, where we were given a cultural treasure hunt around London. Each of the forty places had something to do, from a sketch or photo, to asking an employee at NikeTown “Do you sell adidas trainers?. After our day out, we were asked to portray our day in map form. My main inspiration was the London Tube Map.

//5 Pay To Play 10 // Tom Shorey

From the theme “The World Today”, we were asked to re-design the pound coin. The main theme was the recession so I included the main three stock exchanges, a down arrow on the “I” and a embossed crack through the coin. This could also be interpreted as a stock graph. I chose to still include the Queen to still keep something in common with the current coin.

Matchmaker was our first live brief with a real client, Matches, who are a fashion retailer. We were briefed to create a pattern to be turned into wrapping paper for their christmas displays. I chose pastel colours which complimented their palette on their website.

//7 Brick 12 // Tom Shorey

Brick, was a project where we would create 100 new uses for a brick. We had a deadline of a day, and then we had to do an A2 illustration of all our ideas. This tested my illustration skills.

//8 Wing Of A Bee

The brief for this project was to create a butterfly wing based on a visual theme. The first part was to create a hand-drawn wing, and then from this, we had to create a digital version. My visual theme was the Olympic Games, focusing on the pictograms and the colours of London 2012.

//9 Top Trumps 14 // Tom Shorey

Top Trumps introduced us to InDesign. From a template supplied to us, we had to create our own Top Trump card, along with our chosen attributes. All of our cards were collated together and made into a deck of Top Trumps.

Think Crime was another big idea generating project. We had to create “The Perfect Crime”. I found it quite hard to think of a crime, so I decided to base it on a con I had seen on “The Real Hustle”. The illustration shows step-by-step how to steal someones credit card details by creating a fake wi-fi network in a public place.

//12 Skate Or Die 20 // Tom Shorey

Purely aesthetic board For this project, we were given 4 different skateboard templates from different decades, seventies, eighties, ninties and naughties. From these we had to create a board based on a person, a purely aesthetic board, a board based on a theme, and a typographic board.

//13 Farm To Market 22 // Tom Shorey

For Farm To Market, we had to visit a farm and a market, and do various live drawings. From these we had to create reductive images, and create a poster comparing the too. For my reductive graphics, I chose a theme of American Football logos. I then carried on this theme with the logos being placed on a background of a Football Stadium.

//14 Konigsberg’s Oeuvre 24 // Tom Shorey

As a class, we viewed the film “Midnight in Paris” in an independant cinema in Soho. After viewing the film, we were briefed to create our own portrayal of film in group in the form of a movie trailer. We decided to have our trailer silent, and in black and white, mimicing a trailer we saw before the film. We then edited it in iMovie, before the deadline that evening.

//15 Television Sketchbook 26 // Tom Shorey

Television sketchbook was the first of a set of project set for us over a holiday. This briefed asked for a thousand photos of our TV. I decided to do all of them during an American Football game I was watching. I ended up getting some good shots, some of which looked like real action shots, that I had taken.

//16 Haymaker

Haymaker briefed us with getting up at 3am and creating a piece of art each morning. I decided to do a photo each morning, capturing the sunrise, and various things that happen along with it. By doing long exposures I was able to capture different effects that aren’t achievable in normal daylight hours.

//17 Joke Shop 34 // Tom Shorey

Joke shop asked us to create an animation to the ditty: Rub a dub dub, Three men in a pub, Ten pints of lager, And off to a club. I used transparant acetate film, and drywipe markers to create this animation.

//18 Holiday Havoc 36 // Tom Shorey

This project briefed us with doing something I had never done before. I was finding it hard to think of something different, and something that fitted in with my time constraints. I decided on wearing a Bristol Rovers football shirt. This may seem normal, but being a Bristol City fan, I pretty much grew up hating them as they are our biggest rivals. I felt a bit sick wearing it!

The brief for this project was to create a poster illustrating our goals for the next thirty years in my life. I mapped my future life out on a football pitch starting at 2012, and finishing at 2042.

//20 I’m Game 38 // Tom Shorey

The brief was to create a board game for Graphic Designers. I chose the idea of guessing fonts. We had to design the board and create rules for our game as well.

McStack had the brief of buying 10 cheeseburgers from McDonalds, and stacking them one on top of each other to create a stack that we had to sketch and photograph.

//22 Too Sweet 40 // Tom Shorey

Too Sweet was another inventing project, this time to invent a new type of sweet. I chose to base my sweets on the Adobe Creative Suite software collection. I used a portmanteau for the name playing on the spelling of sweet, and suite. I used the application logos for the sweets.

A still from my Rear Window Webcast.

Alfred Hitchcock : “Master Of Suspense

Film still from Rear Window The brief was to create a project based on a random famous person we were given. I was given Alfred Hitchcock and researched his film, Rear Window. Alfred Hitchcock was used pioneering techniques when creating his films. So i decided to use pioneering technology for my project. My final piece was a live webcast of my Rear Window, from my bedroom, to the graphics class.

BaBooM

BaBooM Filling the balloons proved tricky, so I utilised a water bottle to help me fill them.

BaBooM //24 Jazz Band 42 // Tom Shorey

For jazz band we had to create a musical instrument to perform with the rest of the class on a bridge near the Excel Centre. My instrument, BaBoom, consisted of a rolling pin with a balloon on each end. These balloons were filled with lentils, and raw beans to create a percussion instrument. Sadly one balloon popped in transit to the performance.

//24.5 Book Off Test Cover 44 // Tom Shorey

As part of the book printing process, the class got a test book printed, including one “test spread from each person. This miniproject was to create the front cover for this test book. I created mine to look like a Mac desktop running InDesign. I was surprised to find that my cover was chosen to be the test book cover.

//25 War Between Type & Image 46 // Tom Shorey

Our last project was an anonymous collaboration with another member of our graphics group. The first step was to create three collages with type, three with images, both in a geometric “battlefield. These were then swapped between us and we had to put image on top of the type, and type on top of the images. This created some very interesting hybrids of image and type.
