The Rhet 201 Portfolio

Reflection paper First I want to write how I ordered my portfolio, and then I will write a reflection on the course. I ordered my portfolio by date which means I organized it according to what I did during the semester. I chose to order it that way because in this semester I was doing an Isearch presentation, so I think it is useful to organize it by date so one can see my progress and what work I have done. I really liked this course. It was much nicer than the last 2 semesters because we had to choose what we want to write about and how we write it. Last semester we had to relate our topics to ‘’logos, ethos and pathos’’ which was kind of boring. This made the course very interesting, cause as a student I will chose obviously the most interesting topic for me and will try to write about it. Firstly, I will enjoy gathering more and more information on that topic and secondly, as I am the one that chose the topic, I will apparently have some knowledge in it. In addition, I will enjoy working on the course and will make a lot of effort to get a good grade. Also, what I really liked in that course was writing the journal. That was in my point of view a very good idea because I will see all my work I have done in the semester, the my progress I have made and how much did I develop gradually from the beginning of the semester. This helped me a lot at the end of the semester when I was doing my presentation and also my I search. It also assisted me of course to increase my knowledge of the topic I wrote. The annotated bibliography was also a good idea but I didn’t really like that we had to choose 10 sources. I guess it would be ‘’better’’ to choose the amount of sources that we want, as long as we are developing or gaining knowledge and our presentation and Isearch project is good at the end. The annotated bibliography of course had benefits as well, because at the end of the semester I had a short summary

about each internet site and any type of source I used, which saved me some time not to search and read them all over again. What I didn’t enjoy in the course was that we read each other’s work not each one reads his own work out loud. I like it more when each one has to read his or her own work out loud because that way I will gain knowledge and the class would be more stimulating. I told that to Michael Gibson as well. But overall I would strongly recommend doing the Isearch instead of writing papers and handing them over as drafts.

Journal

08.02.2012: journal Today my class had to meet in the library on the ground floor. Dr Mike waited until all the students came, then he marked on the names of people that are missing to know who attended. As soon as he finished, we head to a "reserved room", then we talked a bit about the upcoming Saturday and what should the Egyptians do to remove Tantawy . Afterwards we went to the -1 floor and Dr Mike showed us the media service room, which was a room full of movies and computers, then we moved to the books section and he clarified how they are followed by the alphabet. Next he took us to the second floor and we saw another section full of books. Dr Mike led us to a certain place, where people can reserve books for law and so on. At last, he told us that we should find 6 sources till the upcoming Sunday and write about a 11.02.2012 : Now I have to decide on a certain topic and obtain 6 sources for it. I finally hit upon my topic which is” How to improve my health” and successfully found 6 sources which explain how to improve our health from inside and outside the body:

1. Menshealth magazine

2. Arabic movie ''X large'' Body weight- body mass index (bmi) 3. The website ‘‘wikipedia.com’’ 3.pollution in Egypt ''Air and noise pollution'' 4. Askmen.com''-Stress 5. .Egyptian tradition shisha and smoking 6. Quality and variation of food is essential

I really like that topic because I have health issues and I want to read about how to improve my health as much as possible. 13.02.2012: Men's health magazine is my favorite magazine because it teaches me a lot about health muscle how to make them grow and so on . I think I should use one of my magazines as one of my sources and as a proof. I can also take a photo of the article and put it in my journal.

13.02.2012 - 7o’clock I'm going now to my cousin Timmy. I like to talk to him about health and things like that because he is 2 years younger than me and want to be a doctor. He applied in the medicine university in Liverpool and had an interview 1 week earlier. He is also my gym buddy who goes with me to gym to help me in training: and his mum gives speeches on health such as why shisha is worse than cigarettes and so on. I told him I have to write about how to improve my health and about my journal and so on. He told me I could take a ''recording '' his mother did and put it in my journal, which I find quite interesting 14.02.2012 I talked to my mum about the I research and she reminded me of the movie X large, which would be interesting and new to use as a source. The moral of the story is not to eat much and one should care about his body because when someone is overweight he can easily die or have problems in his life. So I decided to use that as one f my sources because Dr. Mike told me to use different sources not only the internet

16.02.2012 Today we talked about how are we students should do the I search. Dr Mike elaborated each part and gave us an example of a previous student who had Asthma and he showed us that each topic has a sub question, which leads us writers to a certain way and help u focus more on the topic. After that Dr Mike read his own journal as an example, in order to show us how it should be and how we should write every single detail as possible, better now than procrastination. Mustafa, a classmate, asked him about something concerning the mail he sent us and Dr Mike asked him to wait 5 min to check and then answered him. After that Dr Mike asked us to share some of our topics with the class, so Seif Darwish informed us about his topic “How social network can affect our life and how wall posts can affect relationships and girls get jealous”. Salma, who is an art major and has friends that do street art, chose Street Art as her topic.. I asked if it is a street art if people dance in the street and she said yes. It was then my turn and I illustrated the name of my topic:”How can I improve my immune system to reduce viruses”. Dr Mike gave us the assignment to find 4 sources.

19.02.2012 how can I improve my health and immunity to minimize catching viruses illnesses as I want live a healthy life. Sub questions: 1. What are the precautions I should make? 2. What kind of food should i choose to increase my immunity? 3. Any activity 4. Any kind of vitamins I should concentrate on? 22.02.2012 Now we are talking about transformative learning, which means the way you perceive things and the perception you have. Mike asked us if we are ready to change and a student answered: it depends on what you'll change. So he replied that we are the subject of the course!

I search is a self-interest preferences. Now we are discussing about what an agent is and he explained that it means that anyone who does any stuff. In addition, Dr. Mike asked us about the things that shape us, and whether they are professors, parents, age, experiences friends, and written discourses. He questioned how can I think differently and why do I think that way. I answered “Tuesday with Morrie”. 27.02.2012 I wasn’t done with all my sources! I also had to do a lot of things and I signed a conference with Dr Mike at on the 1st of March. I e-mailed him and cancelled the appointment. He asked me why???? I found it kind of funny because I could imagine him saying it in a funny way. 2.03.2012 I organized my essay in a way that first I will talk about how to improve one’s immunity and what things to avoid. Then I will speak about sports and how it relates to immune improvement. At last I will mention common things here in Egypt that harms many Egyptians health, emphasizing on things that my friends and almost everyone do. I called my cousin and told him I want his mum’s recording and he assured me to send it as soon as possible. 3.03.2012 Today I thought about quitting Red Bull as I heard it has many side effects then I searched online whether Red Bull has more side effects or Gatorade. Apparently Gatorade has fewer side effects. Next thing, I compared Gatorade with Powerade . Powerade has less sugar however, they both have the same ingredients. 8.03.2012 Today I went with my cousin Timmy to the club and did some sports. The training was pretty simple: 1 lap around the track as a warm up then some stretching , then we ran 5 laps . After that we

went inside the football pitch, ran sprints and at the end did some pushup and pull ups. 12.03.2012 Today I went to the gym and talked to my trainer about ‘’whey protein’’. He told me he’d recommend it as I am below the average weight. So I bought one. The brand was GNC and had 20gram protein per scoop 14.03.2012 Today I started my whey protein, I felt it is very useful as it gives me energy. My biceps carried more weight and I even did 4 sets instead of 3. I felt proud of myself. 15.03.2012 Today my biceps were aching. I couldn’t straighten my arm but I was very satisfied with the shake. I went to the gym again and did some leg training of course, I drank the shake afterwards. 22.03.2012 Today I started working on my annotated bibliography. I had already chosen the sites but still had to work on it as I know my first writing is always more or less of a ‘’mess’’. 23.03.2012 Today I checked my old books and I found my old portfolio of English 102. I remembered how Mike asked me to write my opinion whether I like this course Reht 201 more or Rhet 102. I prefer this one more as I have to choose the topic I like and what I’m interested in. I also like this course more because we get to search information up through books, media, internet or even through experience. Rhet 102 was nice but I always had to return to the idea of logos pathos and ethos but still write my own story or whatever I like. In Rhet 102, Mike chose the topic for instance ‘’power’’ and we had to make an observation, notes and was more boring and limited job than both Rhet 102 and 201. When I write about a topic I like I use all my effort and I guess also the other students because they don’t see it as an assignment no they see it as gaining interesting information.

1.4.2012 Today I read a couple of annotated bibliographies of my classmates. I liked the idea not because I learn from them how to do the annotated bibliography, but because I read different topics with different point of views on the topics they chose. I remembered I read one of imaginary friends which I find quiet interesting. When the class ended I even asked a couple of my friends whether they ever had imaginary friends and what they think about this idea of having an imaginary friend. Shockingly 2 out of the 5 friends I asked had imaginary friends one because he is bossy and wanted to have authority on them. The other had a friend in KG and when she went home she imagined this friend going home with her to play.

5.4.2012 Today Mike postponed the deadline of the annotated bibliography as he posted his annotated bibliography late. So we had more time to work on it and bring them after the vacation to class.

18.4.2012 Today I sent to mike an e-mail telling him that I will meet him tomorrow at 1 to check my annotated bibliography and to discuss the negative things. I worked a bit on it and I also used the site that Mostafa told me to use “ Son of Citation Machine citationmachine.net/” This site is very useful as you just enter the names and dates and all the information you have and it does the rest. 19.04.2012 Today I went to Mike and showed him my annotated bibliography. He told me it’s a mess and

wasn’t really satisfied. My problem was that I didn’t end the first line and it was all double spaced. When Mike showed me his, I understood how mine should have been. He also told me to I should write why I chose this site and why do I want to put it in my annotated bibliography, presentation and of course my I search. I went home and organized everything according to his words. It took me around 1 hour and 30 minutes then I posted it on turnitin.com before the deadline, then I went out with my friends. This week we had to start presenting, although not many students were ready. When Mike asked us who would want to volunteer and start, only 3 people raised their hands. Then we had to take a number from Mike and each one will have to present according to his number, .It started with Salma and 2 other people. Salma’s presentation was about if street graffiti should be legalized, does it depend on the message or not and a lot of other information. I also liked the presentation about ‘’ it’s illegal to download movies and songs’’ as I do it often. 2.04.2012 Today other people presented and when I asked Mike when I should present he said on Wednesday. It was a Wednesday so I thought I have a week left but at the end of the class Mike suggested that I should present on Saturday. We had on Saturday a makeup class; I was shocked as I wanted to go to Ain el sokhna. When I went home I thought I could still go and take my laptop and my magazines with me to Sokhna and leave on Saturday at 1 so I will arrive at the AUC at 3. 3.04.2012 Today I worked on my presentation. The hardest part was the slide show and the creativity. I wanted mine to be interesting and different. I liked the idea of putting movies and recordings, so I took the recording of my cousin’s mum and posted it at the shisha part and for obesity I thought about the trailer of X large. I also wanted it to grab the classmates’ attention so I considered when the beginning is funny they will laugh and concentrate. I don’t like it when someone presents something just orally; I like it also visually because I am a visual learner. So I thought about posting a picture of me when I will be old as it fits perfectly, cause the

main idea in my I search and presentation is to live healthy and to reach the age of 100.I also posted several other pictures so the class could see and hear the message I am trying to give to them. Of course I also cared about what my previous presenters said so I wanted to give Moustafa a tip at the end how to overcome obesity. I found this tip in my men’s health magazine. When I was done with my PowerPoint I wrote some notes, which was the easiest part as all I wanted to say was kept in my head. I also practiced it 3 times in front of my mum and sister. They gave me some hints like: look at us, or speak louder, it is worth mentioning that and so on.

5.04.2012 I arrived at AUC with my laptop a bit early, so I went to the library and saw Hanna. I wanted to print some papers of my notes, in order to hand them to my classmates later on. When I went to class I wanted to present first to get relieved from stress, but I was too late and another girl was already there plugging her laptop. I asked Mike if I will be next and. he agreed under one condition not to leave after being done, as the rest of the presenters should have audience as well. When I presented, it was easy because I knew by hard what I was saying and so I felt self confidence. Time passed quickly and soon I was finished. Suddenly I heard applause and Omar Zaki telling me good job man: even Moustafa told me you did a very good job. 8.04.2012 Today we didn’t have classes but we had to go to Eurica conference and take notes. I went from 3-4 and took notes. Luckily it was interesting because last year I did not enjoy it at all, cause it was really boring.

Annotated bibliography before conference My research will be about how can I improve my health so I can live a healthy life. I chose this topic because I want to live long and reach 100 years, I like to be fit and play sports and most important I have a kidney issue and hope if not getting completely cured at least keep it under control . I searched in many sources and found many ways to improve my health and enhance my immune system to minimize catching viruses and illnesses. Vitamins "The Best Vitamins for Your Immune System."Vitamins for Immune System. N.p., n.d.Web. 18 Apr 2012. <http://www.vitaminsforimmunesystem.org/>. The most important vitamin is ‘’Vitamin C’’, as it produces white cells, which is very vital to fight viruses and bacteria. It also releases a certain protein that, in the presence of harmful pathogens, activates the immune cells to fight diseases. Vitamin E is also very important as it strengthens the white blood cells and it produces B cells (anti body), which also plays a role in fighting diseases. Vitamin A creates mucosal barrier, which is important as it prevents diseases from entering the body and helps also in the production of white blood cells. I think that article is good and helpful because it focuses on the vitamins one should take to improve his immune system with a clear and easy explanation. http://www.vitaminsforimmunesystem.org/

Drinking at least 84 ounces of water a day is important as the brain is about 80 percent water and taking adequate water will help the brain not to hydrate. I want to share this information because I guess many teenagers think like me and have the same concept of playing more and more sports.

Arafa, Sherif , dir. Xlarge. United Bros, Shadows communications, 211. Film. Significant researches reveal that a calorie-restricted diet is helpful for brain and life longevity. I put this source (xlarge) because it is a funny movie, which gives a good message. It gives the message of obesity and it's problems in a funny way. That's why People like to watch it even if they are the ones that the film is implying to. I will put this problem of fatness in my paper because many people have this problem of obesity and overweight. I also like this source because it is funny and because I don't want my paper to be boring with only texts and articles that I summary. I want people to watch this to grab their attention. It also gives the audience a message which is that if you have a determined will you can reach your target and lose weight. At the end of the film, the actor showed us how after some long suffering days of hunger he is really enjoying his life with his new shape and won the heart of his beloved girl.

Amen is addressing people who want to live a healthy life and keep their body fit. He says drinking at least 84 ounces of water a day is important, as the brain is about 80 percent water and taking adequate water will help the brain not to hydrate. He mentioned 7 points in his article and the first point was ‘’drinking adequate ‘’ water. In addition, sufficient sleep is the time that our body can revitalize and renew its cells. It is important for the body to sleep and rest, as it uses this time to build and repair itself. I find that article actually very useful as my doctor used to tell me that drinking fluids especially water is one of the things that keeps our kidneys working and prevents dehydration. I want to add this point in my paper as I live in a country where the weather can get very hot where drinking is very important for us Egyptians.

April 2012. <http://www.bbc.co.uk/health/emotional_health/mental_health/mind_stress.shtml>

According to BBC news stress is essential for our life because if you have too little stress one will feel isolated and bored. I think it’s a good article because it comes from BBC news, which is a reliable sort for information, and I learned new things. I want to put this information in my paper because I think it's important to know that one should have moderate stress in our lives. I also want to share the idea of too little stress is also harmful because I guess many people don't know this idea. Also a lot of stress is bad for us. I want to add this because many of my friends get stressed over some small things which aren't worth

for and at the same time this stress causes harmful things to their body.

Moreover, shisha can easily transform viruses especially here in Egypt because of the pollution and lack of cleanness. I found that article very interesting because here Perminder Khatkar shows the harmful effect of shisha. He does not only says it’s consequences in this article he compares it with cigarettes. I find that this comparison is quite interesting because here in Egypt many people stop smoking cigarettes by converting to shisha. In Egypt almost everyone smokes shisha. That’s why I put it in my paper because I want my colleagues to know how harmful smoking shisha can be to them.

Other factor like pollution is a thing one isn’t aware about which can harm our health. According to this internet site CNBC , Egypt is one of the most polluted countries in the world. Its rank is number 6. I rely on that site and can easily believe it as I can see how the mini busses emit smoke that kills all the trees around them. I like this Internet site because it is accurate and gives ranks not just says ‘’Egypt is a polluted country’’. I always get nervous when a mini bus is in front of me and starts polluting the whole weather and forces us to inhale polluted winds. I don’t want to harm my liver by inhaling some harmful gases. This mini bus is only one example that is spread in Egypt but there are many other things that pollute the weather too like burning garbage’s or throwing dead animals in the Nile and much more. The reason I think that it fits in my paper because I noticed that there are many things that harm me and I should take care of it.

I search before conference

Introduction: As a Teenager I want to enjoy my life and reach the age of 100. I can only accomplish that if I care about my health and find the best way to improve it. I have some kidney problems but I won’t take that as a drawback instead I will try to get better and reach my goals. I had these problems since I was 2 years old and gained a lot of experience of how to control the disease and decrease the relapses and side effects of the medication, unlike when I was a child. I am also an outgoing person and enjoy outdoor more than indoor outings. I enjoy playing sports like soccer, volley or running sprints which requires a good healthy body and a lot of fitness. So I decided when Dr Michael Gibson told us in Rhet 201 class to choose a topic we

want to write about, I chose this topic, not only because I have to do my duty towards the class and get a good grade, but because I find it interesting and in some way helping other students to care about their health. I don’t drink shisha or smoke cigarettes because I know if I start these things I will first, ruin my health, which will lead to polluted lungs, bad fitness, and no sports and basically I will never be able to fulfill my goal which is living a healthy life. Furthermore, I don’t need to harm any other organ of mine, instead I should care about my body. So all my questions that drive my search for best health are: What should I do to live a healthy life and especially what are the precautions as a teenage boy who lives in Egypt that I should care about? Finally, I realized that sports, in addition to other minor things, are very effective although many people underestimate its outcome. I also discovered when I care about sports, the body will have a good immune system, which protects the body from any illnesses and fights most types of any viruses. I guess I for this objective topic I can easily read some of my men’s health magazines. The Story of my Search: To improve my health, I looked in several sources, magazines Internet sites, movies and asked even my doctor. Of course I concentrated on the main things that concern me as a teenage boy living in Egypt. I also discovered something very interesting which is that not only me but also a lot of people in my class care about their health as well. Apparently this seems a major topic here in Egypt, as a movie called (X LARGE) performed by the director ‘’ Sherif Arafa’’ and attacks ‘’ obesity and bad health’’, achieved a lot of success. I looked in many of my ‘’men’s health’’ magazines mainly about things that concern my teenage life and me.

I also searched in the Internet; .I wrote in Google ‘’ how can I improve my health’’ and found tremendous Internet sites. Some of them are useful while others aren’t that helpful like internet sites that support pills.I don’t like taking pills as I read that they have bad side effects in addition that they might be contradicting the medicines I take, so I skipped these sites. When I asked my doctor how I can help my health to improve, besides the medicines I take, he told me to play sports. When my cousin heard what the doctor suggested, he advised me to go with him to fitness trainings. These are many sources (from the ones mentioned above) that I used:

Web. 19 April 2012. < World’s Most Polluted Countries>. What I found: After a great deal of search and a lot of readings, I decided to follow the doctor’s words and test the effect of sports on me and whether I will notice any health benefits or not. So I started by going to train with my cousin in the track of Gezira club. At first I could run 5 laps then got tired and had to rest for 5 minutes to continue the training. After 2 weeks I found some improvement I was able to run 8 laps and rest for a minute and continue the training. Lately I am able to run 10 laps and train and even go to the gym afterwards. I also realized that my body is more stretched and more muscles were built, besides sleeping much better. Now I sleep around 8-9 hours; whereas I used to sleep 6-7 hours. Moreover, I noticed that I eat much more than before as my body needs energy to consume. I start taking multivitamins as well because I read in one of the following sites that vitamins play a major role in keeping the immune system at the right level. I recognized too that the things I have read are very true, for example I feel less stressed as I sleep more, which was mentioned in men’s health magazine ( sports reduces stress and regulates the immune system). Obesity’s consequences were shown in the movie’’ X Large ‘’which was a comedy film acted by Ahmed Helmy and directed by Sherif Arafa.. I used this movie as I couldn’t really experiment the obesities consequences.

According to CNBC one of the internet sites I chose says that Egypt is one of the top 10 polluted countries, more specifically number 6 in the world. This is also a big problem as anyone who lives in Egypt of course inhales this polluted air and damages his lungs. I know I can’t really do anything about that but that made me think if the air is already polluted why should I damage my lungs more by smoking or drinking shisha . I am proud to admit that I never smoked or drank shisha. Another important thing I didn’t really know was that the radiation of mobile phones can cause many diseases. Of course I, as a teenager and a bbm addict, use the mobile more than I use my tongue. When I read the article, thanks to Danielle Dellorto, ‘’ WHO: Cell phone use can increase possible cancer risk” and watched on CNN that mobile phones harm the people without even realizing it , I stopped sleeping next to my mobile phones and tried to minimize my bbming. Surprisingly I noticed that actually when keeping the mobile phone away while one is asleep one feels better and wakes up more energetic. These are the ideas I cared most about, while interacting daily with those kinds of things. Therefore, I decided to share these information on my Isearch and presentation as they might interest many of my classmates.

Afterwards we

went to the -1 floor and Dr Mike showed us the media service room, which was a room full of movies and computers, then we moved to the books section and he clarified how they are followed by the alphabet.

1. Menshealth magazine 2.

He applied in the medicine

university in Liverpool and had an interview 1 week earlier.

After that we went inside the football pitch, ran sprints and at the end did some pushup and pull ups. I had already chosen the sites but still

had to work on it as I know my first writing is always more or less of a ‘’mess’’.

He told me it’s a mess and wasn’t really satisfied. It was a Wednesday so I thought I have a week left but at the end of the class

Mike suggested that I should present on Saturday. So I thought about posting a picture of me when I will be old as it fits perfectly, cause the main idea in my I search and presentation is to live healthy and to reach the age of 100.I also posted several other pictures so the class could see and hear the message I am trying to give to them.

I asked Mike if I will be next and. he agreed under one condition not to leave after being done, as the rest of the presenters should

have audience as well.

"10 Immune System Busters & Boosters." WebMD Better information.Better health. N.p., n.d.

Web. 19 Apr 2012. <http://www.webmd.com/cold-and-flu/10-immune-system-bustersboosters>. This site stated that playing any sports is very essential in order to keep people healthy. Sports has many health benefits. It protects our bodies from viruses; it boosts the immune system and helps us stay fit for a long period of time. But too many exercises can also decrease one’s immune system because when we do sports our body produces a certain hormone that temporarily decreases our immune system. I really trust this site because it won award-winning expertise in medicine, journalism, health communication and content creation in giving the best possible health information. I was shocked when I read this article because I always had in mind the more one plays sports the better it is for the health, but apparently this internet site proved me wrong .

Eating less helps you live longer and reduces risk for heart disease, cancer and other illnesses.

People who eat too much and gain weight will have many physical problems. According to an Arabic movie called ‘’ x large’’ one can even die when he is overweight. When someone is overweight he can have back problems, as the spin is too weak for the body. In addition, the risk of getting diabetes is very high and he will have difficulties in moving, which will weaken the muscles. Another main problem that overweight people suffer from is heart problems.

"The Best Vitamins for Your Immune System."Vitamins for Immune System. N.p., n.d. Web. 19 Apr 2012. <http://www.vitaminsforimmunesystem.org/>. This article states that the significance of ‘’Vitamin C’’, as it produces white cells, which is very vital to fight harmful viruses and bacteria. It also releases a certain protein that, in the presence of harmful pathogens, activates the immune cells to fight diseases. It also mentions the importance of Vitamin E, which strengthens the white blood cells and produces B cells (anti body that also plays a role in fighting diseases. Vitamin A creates mucosal barrier, which is important as it prevents diseases from entering the body and helps also in the production of white blood cells. So I guess one should care about these 3 vitamins as, if one lacks in one of these vitamins, he can easily catch viruses. These 3 vitamins work together like a human body, no one can work without the other. I think that this article is good and helpful because it focuses on the vitamins one should take to improve his immune system with a clear and easy explanation.

Dellorto, Danielle. "WHO: Cell phone use can increase possible cancer risk." CNN. N.p., May 31, 2011. Web. 19 Apr 2012. Danielle Dellorto declares in his Internet article that radiation is all over the world through mobile, TV and Wi- Fi. These radiations will harm people easily while they are not aware. According to World Health Organization Mobile radiation can cause cancer! He mentions some experiments happened in 2010.

I heard that several times but I was never sure until I read this article! I believed it only because it gives some evidences, which are scientifically proven. It also elaborates the effect of these radiations in an easy way.

G. Amen, Daniel. "7 Nutrition Tips for Increasing Brain Power." About.co.,Women's health.

N.p., December 09, 2005. Web. 19 Apr 2012. <http://womenshealth.about.com/od/fitnessandhealth/a/goodbraingreat.htm>. Daniel G.

Jenkins, Gill. "The consequences of too much stress." BBC NEWS. N.p., July 2011. Web. 19

April 2012. <http://www.bbc.co.uk/health/emotional_health/mental_health/mind_stress.shtml>

According to BBC news stress is essential for our life because if you have too little stress one will feel isolated and bored. This was new information that I gained, as I didn’t know that too little stress has side effects as well. It is common that on the other hand, too much stress can have many side effects like: heart problems, stroke, high blood pressure and cause of distrust anger, fear and anxiety.

I want to add this because many of my friends get stressed over some small things which aren't worth for and at the same time this stress causes harmful things to their body.

Khatkar, Perminder. "Shisha 'as harmful as cigarettes'."BBC NEWS. N.p., 24 August 2009. Web. 19 Apr 2012. <http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/8214097.stm>. Perminder Khatkar addresses people who smoke Shisha, in his article that smoking shisha was 400 to 450 times more hazardous than having a cigarette. One session of smoking shisha - that's 10 milligrams (of fruit tobacco) for 30 minutes - gives carbon monoxide levels that were at the lowest four and five times higher than having a cigarette.

Moss, Ellie, and Ash Dubson. "6 fitness steps to less stress."MH 100 GREATEST fatiguebeatingStress-busting. May 2011: 85. Print. According to men’s health magazine one can reduce stress by playing sports. Cycling at 75 % of max heart rate boosts the feel-good hormones Swimming or any physical activity gives one endorphin (feel good hormone) rush and makes stress go away. I really like this magazine as it helps one to improve health in several ways, beside sports. I also rely on it as it is very popular all over the world and it also gives information though a professional instructors (I have the magazine at home).

Then questions : Tarek : where do get rabbit teeth ? Butchers, other drinks --> tea and coffee Question in the hospital: (to nada)Bringing sponsors feel ok with that Not control what they feel Eurica conference summary The Eurica conference on May 6th - 7th the Seventh Excellence in Undergraduate Research, Entrepreneurship and Creative Achievement Conference (EURECA) was held in the Moata El Alfi Hall. I attended the one from 2.20-3 o’clock on may the 6th. different people presented then we had a chance to ask them questions.

The effect of some soft drinks and sports Baverages on Teeth Enamel Integrity The first presenter (Tarek Tarek Saniour) was interesting. First he told us that the most common disease is teeth erosion. It comes mostly when athlete use sports drinks because it is acidic. Then he gave told us about an experiment he has done where he took 60 rabbit teeth and divided them into 4 groups. The first group of rabbit teeth was put in tab water, second in pepsi third in sprite and fourth in a sports drink. He weightend the teeth before the experiment and after . The results were the following: The one in tap water lost the less weight whereas the one on the sports drink loss the most weight because it is the most acidic fluid out of the 4. Then he gave us the solution which was eat a lot of cheese and drink milk and brush teeth more than 1 minute The Ride of the Public Hospital The second presenter was a girl called Nada Nabhan, and Rana Abo Mandour Her topic was about lack of proper health is a problem facing Egypt. this is because of several reasons Staff are not well trained , Are fresh graduate, free service provided and Managers lack the real qualified characters. the purpose of this conference was to develop a hospital to be more of a savior Then she told us her mission:Low financial resources m fond raising approach not depending on the governemt and do a hospital management training . The most important one Is to approach peers to teach the staff or nurses. This will be done in several ways: 1st: do some sponsor ships and organize an actual fundraising event as part if their learning process.Recruit 25 member of the hospital to train. 2nd : Approch experienced doctors who are willing t donate some of their time and give training to staff 3rd:Insure money, knowledge and trainings are spent well. The problems that might accure: doctors think they are inadequate for the job . To solve the problem they will give the doctors a full detailed description if the projects .

I’m on my way!Callingg for the First Resonsoble Team The third presenter was also a girl called Joni Northam Because of the high sense of responsibility after the revolution the hospitals should be developed and people should see the country as better. The problem of the ambulances should be fixed which are : 1. Traffic 2.mobility

3.Ambulances are not in time What are the ideas to solve problems? Make people walk mor and use the metro More motorcycles Make people learn the basic medical knowledge

After the presentation was done two people asked 3 questions 1.Where did u get rabbit teeth Taek answered from butchers and if tarek did this experiment with other liquids and tarek said yes with tea and coffee.

2nd question (to Nada): Would the sponsors feel ok to help: Nada answered we can’t control what they feel.

I did like the first presentation and the last one the most. That is because the first one of Tarek he talked to us and asked us questions which grabbed us audience attention. He also did some experiments and showed us the results which I found quite nice. I didn’t really like the way Nada presented because she kept reading her power point presentation. When she looked at us she wasn’t speaking fluently and I had the feeling she is only presenting because she has to present not because she wants to present Joni was kind of a good presenter as well because she spoke fluent and made it kind of exciting. She mentioned at the beginning thet she had nice experiences riding a motorcycle and so on so this gave me the impression that she does care about the project she is giving us.

Isearch Health and joy in Egypt Introduction: As a Teenager I want to enjoy my life and reach the age of 100. I can only accomplish that if I care about my health and find the best way to improve it. I have some kidney problems but I won’t take that as a drawback, instead I will try to get better and reach my goals. I had these problems since I was 2 years old and gained a lot of experience of how to control the disease and decrease the relapses and side effects of the medication, unlike when I was a child. I am also an outgoing person and enjoy outdoor more than indoor outings. I enjoy playing sports like soccer, volley or running sprints, which requires a good, healthy body and a lot of fitness. When Dr Michael Gibson told us in Rhet 201 class to choose a topic we want to write about, I decided on this topic. It was not only because I have to do my duty towards the class and get a good grade, but because I find it interesting and in some way helping other students to care about their health. Pne pf my main reason not to drink shisha or smoke cigarettes because I know if I start these things I will first, ruin my health, which will lead to polluted lungs, bad fitness, and no sports and basically I will never be able to fulfill my goal which is living a healthy life.

I also discovered when I care about sports, the body will have a good immune system, which protects the body from any illnesses and fights most types of viruses. I guess I for this objective topic I can easily read some of my men’s health magazines. The Story of my Search: At the first week of classes in February we knew about I search and how it works. I can remember well, we are the subject of the course; everyone should write about his own topic and write a journal in which is written all the steps he do for the course. At that point I knew right away that my topic would be about health. I didn’t know how to start at first, then after some thinking I got an idea. I listed first the things that damage and destroy the health of most Egyptians and then the things how to fix these problems and its consequences. The list went the following with the following order: Obesity, Shisha , pollution , mobile phones radiation and stress . I didn’t want to write a long list because it would take too long and would be boring when listing a long list. So when I thought about obesity I didn’t know what source to use. Three days later Michael Gibson took us to the library and showed us different sources we could use like magazines, books and movies not only Internet sites. I didn’t want to use all my sources from the Internet because it would be boring. When Gibson told us we should write an I search question, I wrote the following: “How should I improve my health”. He also mentioned that we should find 4 sources. Some days later Gibson gave us an example about a boy who had asthma and told us how

the question should look like. I realized then that my I search question was too general and I should limit it a bit more. In the middle of February I chose the following as my Isearch question ‘’How to live a healthy life in Egypt’’. To improve my health, I looked in several sources, magazines Internet sites, and movies and asked even my doctor. Of course I concentrated on the main things that concern me as a teenage boy living in Egypt. 2 weeks later I still didn’t have many sources so I asked my mother to give me a good source about obesity. She suggested the movie X large directed by Sherif Arafa and staring Ahmed Helmy. Arafa, Sherif , dir. Xlarge. United Bros, Shadows communications, 211. Film I discovered at that moment something very interesting, which is that not only me but also a lot of people in my class care about their health as well. Apparently this seems a major topic here in Egypt. ‘’xlarge’’ attacks obesity and bad health and achieved a lot of success. So I thought about using it as my source and I might as well show a trailer of the movie in my presentation. Taking the film as a source was also a good idea as it is a comedy movie and gives a message in a funny way. I searched about Shisha as well on that day and I remembered my cousin telling me that he had a recording of his mum who got a PHD in Biochemistry. A BBC staff interviewed her about Shisha and its consequences and how it is worse than cigarettes. I also thought about looking for an Internet sites that supports this theory so I wrote in Google the following: Shisha worse that cigarettes. I found a lot of internet sites, but some of them weren’t that reliable and some looked weird. After looking over and over I chose the following one: Khatkar, Perminder. "Shisha 'as harmful as cigarettes'."BBC NEWS. N.p., 24 August 2009. Web. 19 Apr 2012. <http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/8214097.stm>.

I chose the following one because it is also a BBC site so it is reliable. 3 weeks later I looked at my list and continued working on my project. The next task in my list was pollution. I chose pollution in my list because I remembered my German teacher telling us that Egypt is one of the top 10 most polluted countries in the world. I didn’t know that, so I added it in my I search so the rest of my class can know about this useful information. I wrote in Google: ‘’Egypt top 10 polluted countries’’ and of course I got over hundred sites, from which I chose the following as it is reliable because it is a CNBC site and has pictures in them: "World’s Most Polluted Countries." CNBC.com. N.p., n.d. Web. 19 Apr 2012. < World’s Most Polluted Countries>. Thanks to CNBC that it gave a ranking because I don’t like it when they are too general and don’t give any orders. On the 23rd of March I went to my doctor in Paris and asked him how can I support my medicines in a natural way and how can I improve my health besides the medicines .So he answered that I should take calcium vitamins as they strengthen the immune system, which fights diseases and calcium won’t work well if I didn’t support it with Vitamin D (a new information to me). He also advised me to play sports. I told him I play lots of sports and asked him if it is ok that my heart rate increases to 190bpm, He advised me to take the training a bit easier, first start with 30, and then increase it to 1 hour a week and after then 1.30 hour 2 weeks after. When I came back to Egypt, I searched in the Internet the next day and I wrote in Google ‘’How can I improve my health’’ and found tremendous Internet sites. I limited the question to ‘’ which vitamins should I take to boost my immune system’.’ Some sites were useful while others weren’t that helpful, like Internet sites that support pills .I don’t like taking pills as I read that they have bad side effects, in

addition they might be contradicting to the medicines I take, therefore I skipped these sites andI chose the following "10 Immune System Busters & Boosters." WebMD Better information.Better health. N.p., n.d. Web. 19 Apr 2012. <http://www.webmd.com/cold-and-flu/10-immune-systembustersboosters>. "The Best Vitamins for Your Immune System."Vitamins for Immune System. N.p., n.d. Web. 19 Apr 2012. <http://www.vitaminsforimmunesystem.org/>. Khatkar, Perminder. "Shisha 'as harmful as cigarettes'."BBC NEWS. N.p., 24 August 2009. Web. 19 Apr 2012. <http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/8214097.stm>. I chose the following one because it is also a BBC site and is reliable and of course it is the same community. 6 days after I went to my cousin and told him about my doctor’ advice to play sports and therefore I joined the Gym with a trainer, as it is wrong that I do my own training because that way my heart rate rises too high. When my cousin heard what the doctor suggested, he advised me to go with him to fitness trainings. 3 weeks later we had to post the annotated bibliography to turnitin.com. I also found myself late as I missed the conference because I was in Paris and I didn’t have my 10 sources. On that day I worked 3 hours on my Isearch and annotated bibliography. I chose mobile radiation number 4 on my list because I was a BBm addict like most of the Egyptians and I never really believed that it can harm people. So I thought about searching about this myself. I looked up in the Internet about the topic mobile phones’ radiation and found the following the most useful one:

Dellorto, Danielle. "WHO: Cell phone use can increase possible cancer risk." CNN. N.p., May 31, 2011. Web. 19 Apr 2012. I chose this one because it tells us about experiments and gives elaborated information. I added stress in my list at last, as I always suffer from stress when I go and return from AUC because of the traffic, the beeping and of course most of all the smoke of the mini busses along with the heat. I am sure that most Egyptians suffer also from that problem so I decided to look up the consequences by myself. I looked it up the internet and I chose this internet site because of it’s credibility as it is from BBC: Jenkins, Gill. "The consequences of too much stress." BBC NEWS. N.p., July 2011. Web. 19 April 2012. http://www.bbc.co.uk/health/emotional_health/mental_health/mind_stress.shtml I was done with the list and all I had to do now was find a cure to these problems. I remembered that I read an article in my men’s health magazine, which helps us fight stress, and are stress boosters, so I decided to use this as a source as I realized that I used too many Internet sites. Moss, Ellie, and Ash Dubson. "6 fitness steps to less stress."MH 100 GREATEST fatiguebeatingStress-busting. May 2011: 85. Print. I couldn’t really do anything about smoking, shisha, pollution or mobile addicts; however all I could do was tell people the consequences of what they are doing and they should consider thinking about it.

For obesity it is obvious to reduce food so I thought I shouldn’t really write about it. I guess I gathered a lot of information to my I search and my presentation. On May the third: Gibson told me I would present after a week; however at the end of the class we realized that there weren’t much time, therefore I should present on May the 4th. I was doing the Power Point and tried to put many pictures and make it interesting. I put a lot of effort to do my presentation unlike everyone else, a combination of recording, video pictures and me the presenter of course. So I made my presentation the following: I chose each unhealthy fact and its consequences and decided to talk about each one of them. I didn’t want to write much at the PowerPoint because I know the students will read what written instead of listening to me. So I thought about giving them a paper with all the useful information at the end. I also wanted to help Moustafa as his topic is part of mine, so I gave him a tip at the end. When I was finished with the PowerPoint I wrote some notes, presented it 3 times in front of my sister and mother and they can give me tips what I should develop. The 5th of May: That was my presentation day, I came 1 hour early, printed the papers and presented in front of the class. What I found: After a great deal of search and a lot of readings, I decided to follow the doctor’s words and test the effect of sports on me and whether I will notice any health benefits or not. I also wanted to see if my teacher’s words were true or about that Egypt is one of the most polluted countries in the world. So I started in the middle of February with my search. I am proud to admit that I never smoked or drank shisha. Shisha is much more unhealthy than I thought. I never knew that Shisha is worse than cigarettes, only when I listened again to the recording,

I note Dr Melligy saying that shisha is worse than cigarettes. So I also chose this Internet site to support the recording as it defines exactly how much worse it is. According to this Internet site: Khatkar, Perminder. "Shisha 'as harmful as cigarettes'."BBC NEWS. N.p., 24 August 2009. Web. 19 Apr 2012. <http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/8214097.stm>. Shisha is 400 times worse than cigarettes. I was surprised when I saw the result at first because many of my friends think when they convert form cigarettes to Shisha they are doing themselves a favor but apparently it is wrong as Shisha has more Cancer subsidence than cigarettes and more nicotine. I wanted to add this in the paper to show it to my friends and the rest of the class. 3 weeks after I searched about Shisha and checked if my German teacher’s words were true. Unfortunately his words were true and according to CNBC one of the internet sites I chose , Egypt is one of the top 10 polluted countries, more specifically number 6 in the world. This is also a big problem as anyone who lives in Egypt of course inhales this polluted air and damages his lungs. I know I can’t really do anything about that but that made me think if the air is already polluted why should I damage my lungs more by smoking or drinking shisha 2 weeks later after I came from Paris , I started training with my cousin in the track of Gezira club. At first I could run 5 laps then got tired and had to rest for 5 minutes to continue the training. After 2 weeks I found some improvement, I was able to run 8 laps and rest for a minute and continue the training. I recognized too that

the things I have read are very true, for example I feel less stressed as I sleep more, which was mentioned in men’s health magazine (sports reduces stress and regulates the immune system). 4 weeks later when I wanted to see if I am illumining stuff or if it is true I rechecked the following internet site which talks about stress: Jenkins, Gill. "The consequences of too much stress." BBC NEWS. N.p., July 2011. Web. 19 April 2012. http://www.bbc.co.uk/health/emotional_health/mental_health/mind_stress.shtml I found out that too much stress could cause heart problems, depression and low blood pressure. I also found that too little stress can cause the feeling of isolation and loneliness that was new information to me as I never knew about it. I also found that they wrote about 2 ways, people deal with stress, a negative one and a positive one: ‘’ In order to cope with their stress, many people look to things that are not only ineffective but also unhealthy. Negative stress-management techniques include: •

Drinking alcohol.

Denying the problem.

Taking drugs.

Overeating.

Smoking cigarettes.

Angry behavior.

Instead of these harmful techniques, why not try one of the following: •

Taking a nap - 30 to 40 minutes' downtime will recharge your batteries.

Get a massage - visit a professional massage therapist or ask a friend or

partner. •

Express yourself artistically - divert your energies into something creative,

such as acting, playing an instrument, writing poetry or singing. •

Have a laugh - not only will it make you feel better, it will make you look

better too. •

Be gentle to yourself - we talk to ourselves all the time, even though we're not

aware of it. This 'self-talk' determines our attitudes and self-image, so try to change both with a bit of positive chatter. •

Meditation, contemplation and relaxation techniques.’’

So I was glad that I found progresses. I thought about adding it to my presentation and I gave a few tips to Mustafa on the day of my presentation because he cared about losing weight. I told him a few tips that my trainer told me which basically is when one runs short sprints is much more beneficial than someone running long joggings. This way someone will lose weight faster. Obesity as I mentioned above is a huge problem in Egypt even my classmates are afraid of this problem because it has too many harms. In the movie X large that I used as a source the uncle of the main character gets heart problem then dies because of obesity. So obesity can lead to heart problems and even death. Another important thing I didn’t really know was that the radiation of mobile phones can cause many diseases. Of course I, as a teenager and a bbm addict, use the mobile more than I use my tongue. When I read the article, thanks to Danielle Dellorto, ‘’ WHO: Cell phone use can increase possible cancer risk” and saw on CNN that mobile phones harm the people without even realizing it. I also found very interesting things that I never knew about: ‘’Results from the largest international study on cell

phones and cancer was released in 2010. It showed participants in the study who used a cell phone for 10 years or more had doubled the rate of brain glioma, a type of tumor. To date, there have been no long-term studies on the effects of cell phone usage among children.’’, The Apple I Phone 4 safety manual says users' radiation exposure should not exceed FCC guidelines: "When using iPhone near your body for voice calls or for wireless data transmission over a cellular network, keep iPhone at least 15 millimeters (5/8 inch) away from the body." BlackBerry Bold advises users to "keep the BlackBerry device at least 0.98 inch (25 millimeters) from your body when the BlackBerry device is transmitting." I copy paste exactly what was written to show how detailed this internet site is, how they even show us a warning about the 2 most famous phones and how wide they should be from our bodies. I also liked the idea of mentioning an experiment and the result. This gives the internet site credibility and I as a reader will believe it more. I stopped sleeping next to my mobile phones and tried to minimize my bbming. Surprisingly I noticed that actually when keeping the mobile phone away while one is asleep one feels better and wakes up more energetic. On the 3rd of May when I knew I had to present on the 5th of May I was surprised at first because I didn’t know what I would say. Then I thought about it and it turned out pretty easy, all I have to say is the new things I learned or basically all the things I searched about. My friends told me about an application that makes u older, so I thought why not use it in my presentation? It will make the presentation funny and nice. On that day I took a photo of me and I converted it to 50 years later where I looked much older. I wrote also several notes what I will say and what is important and what not, so I can talk freely without looking much at the audience. I also

discovered some pictures I took several times about Shisha and pollution that helped me put them in my PowerPoint presentation. On the 5th of May I was excited and a bit scared because I had to present. I wanted to present as soon as possible so the burden would leave. When I presented I found the audience liking my topic and my arguments as they clapped several times about what I said. When I was done a lot of people told me it was good and they liked it so that made me happy.

Reflection: I am glad that we used this Isearch instead of the syllabus because I can search my own topics and I liked being the subject of it. I learned knew stuff and things that I wanted to learn about which in my case is health. I could also tell about my everyday life, what I did, when I started the trainings and when I asked the doctor about some advise. I will continue my trainings and multi vitamins as I realized some differences in my health and my fitness. What I might change is the constant BBMing and

decrease it a bit. I will also put my Blackberry on loudspeaker as much as possible when someone calls me because that way I will limit the radiation. I will try not to go to coffee shops where there is Shisha as much as possible. The idea of journaling was pretty useful as it is against procrastination and it keeps us students updated. At the end of the semester one can also review what he wrote back in the beginning of it. I‘d suggest other professors to do the Isearch as well, as it is much more beneficial and makes us students learn more and enjoy the learning. I had a good semester and I actually learned a lot of new stuff and I even started trainings.

Web. 19 Apr 2012. <http://www.webmd.com/cold-and-flu/10-immune-systembusters-

boosters>. This site stated that playing any sports is very essential in order to keep people healthy. Sport has many health benefits. It protects our bodies from viruses, boosts the immune system and helps us stay fit for a long period of time.

I put this source (X large) because it is a funny movie, which gives a good message. It gives the message of obesity and it's problems in a funny way. That's why People like to watch it even if they are the ones that the film is implying to. I will put this problem of fatness in my paper because many people have this problem of obesity and overweight. I also like this source because it is funny and I don't want my paper to be boring with only texts and articles that I summarize. I want people to watch this to grab their attention. It also gives the audience a message which is that if you have a determined will you can reach your target and lose weight. At the end of the film, the actor showed us how after some long suffering days of hunger he is really enjoying his life with his new shape and won the heart of his beloved girl.

‘’Best Vitamins for Your Immune System."Vitamins for Immune System. N.p., n.d. Web. 19 Apr 2012. <http://www.vitaminsforimmunesystem.org/>. This article states the significance of ‘’Vitamin C’’, as it produces white cells, which is very vital to fight harmful viruses and bacteria.

According to World Health Organization, Mobile radiation can cause cancer!

Daniel G. I want to add this point in my paper as I live in a country where the weather can get very hot and drinking is very important for us Egyptians.

Jenkins, Gill. "The consequences of too much stress." BBC NEWS. N.p., July 2011. Web. 19 April 2012. <http://www.bbc.co.uk/health/emotional_health/mental_health/mind_stress.shtml> According to BBC news stress is essential for our life because if you have too little stress one will feel isolated and bored. This was new information that I gained, as I didn’t know that too little stress has side effects as well. It is common that too much stress can have many side effects like: heart problems, stroke, high blood pressure and cause of distrust anger, fear and anxiety.

One session of smoking shisha - that's 10 milligrams (of fruit tobacco) for 30 minutes - gives carbon monoxide levels that were at the lowest four and five times higher than

having a cigarette. Moreover, shisha can easily transform viruses especially here in Egypt because of the pollution and lack of cleanness. I found that article very interesting, because here Perminder Khatkar shows the harmful effect of shisha. He does not only say it’s consequences in this article but he compares it with cigarettes. I find that this comparison is quite interesting because here in Egypt many people stop smoking cigarettes by converting to shisha. In Egypt almost everyone smokes shisha. That’s why I put it in my paper because I want my colleagues to know how smoking shisha can be harmful to them.

"World’s Most Polluted Countries." CNBC.com. N.p., n.d. Web. 19 Apr 2012. < World’s Most Polluted Countries>. Other factor like pollution is a thing one isn’t aware of and can harm our health. According to this internet site CNBC; Egypt is one of the most polluted countries in the world. Its rank is number 6. I rely on that site and can easily believe it as I can see how the mini busses emit smoke that kills all the trees around them. I like this Internet site because it is accurate and gives ranks not just says ‘’Egypt is a polluted country’’. I always get nervous when a mini bus is in front of me and starts polluting the whole airband forces us to inhale polluted winds. I don’t want to harm my liver by inhaling some harmful gases. This mini bus is not the only one example that is spread in Egypt but there are many other things that pollute the air too like burning garbage’s or throwing dead animals in the Nile and much more. The reason I think that it fits in my paper because I noticed that there are many things that harm me and I should take care of it.

A few words about Portfolios

Posted on: Thursday, May 10, 2012

First, you actually don't need to number the pages of the portfolio; ISSUU.com will do it for you. Second, the portfolio is a chance to show the process in which you engaged over the course of the semester, so make sure to include each and every piece of writing and other work you've done related to the course this semester. This includes (but is not limited to) all drafts of all assignments, class notes, individual conference notes, Writing Center appointment notes, EURECA conference notes, and any other notes you yourself made in the process of drafting assignments (including brainstorming lists, outlines, free-writes, and more!). It also includes assigned in-class writings, such as what you did on the first day. If you made notes during someone's presentation or made some notes in preparation for you own presentation, include it. Include your PowerPoint, Prezi, or anything else you used for your presentation. Add any videos you used, whether in your papers or in your presentation. If you've sent me a wellwritten email that pertains directly to something about the course content, put it in. Include everything! Don't exclude anything!! This is an opportunity for me to see all the work you did -- not only things I've seen already, but also things you did behind the scenes -- work that I haven't had the chance to see yet. The portfolio is not just a product, it's evidence of your engagement and participation, hopefully proving that in some way you, the subject of the course, have been transformed in some way as a result of all your work -thinking, dialoguing, writing, and actively participating -- over the course of the semester. Any scheduling conflicts? Please advise accordingly.

Posted on: Wednesday, April 11, 2012

Dear 201ers: As you know, we are scheduled to meet together (both of my 201 sections) on

Saturday, May 12th from 9-1 in HUSS P071 for the purpose of giving final presentations of the I-search papers. Now, in light of the rescheduling of classes in order to bump up the final exam schedule (for elections), all classes that were supposed to be meeting on Wed, May 16 are now supposed to meet on Sat, May 5 and classes which normally would have been held on Thur, May 17 are now supposed to meet on Sat, May 12. Considering this, if any of you normally have (an) 8:30, 10, or 11:30 class(es) on Thursdays that your professors will be making up on May 12th (at supposedly the same times the classes usually meet), then there would obviously be a conflict with our planned schedule. So, if this applies to any of you, please send me a message letting me know which of those times on Saturday the 12th you would have (an)other class(es) to attend between the hours of 9 and 1. Let me know which class(es) it is/they are, what time it/they usually meet(s), and the professor's(') name(s). I will see how many of you are affected and try to figure out a solution to any problem we may have. If it's just a matter of a few of you who have a conflict at one or two of the times only, then perhaps we could still plan to meet as scheduled on Sat the 12th and those of you who have other classes during the window of 9-1 could just come when you're free. If there are conflicts, I will check with the professors involved and see if we could work out a compromise. Thanks for your input. M. My revised journal/paper

Sample journal and i-search paper draft

Posted on: Wednesday, March 21, 2012

Please see an example of how to turn journal entries into the first draft of an isearch paper by looking at the last two items listed under Course Materials. The paper is still missing some parts, like the last section (reflection) and a Works Cited page, and of course it still needs more editing of present sections to become a more cleanly revised draft, but this shows how to start the process of transforming a journal into a paper.
