Message From the Editor I’m normally in a Bah Humbug mood at this time of year. This year is a little different. Giving this publication as my offering to all, has me feeling a little like Santa (no fatboy jokes). This month I sit down with Mrs. Katina Hamlar of Hamlar Enterprises as we talk about her role in the Star Tank competition that took place in Roanoke. Based off the popular show “Shark Tank,” local investors listen to the pitch of local business owners nad actually made deals on the spot. We also keep you in tune with all the events going on locally and throughout the state. We feel it is our job to keep you Focused, keeping you informed as much as possible. With Focused Radio playing in your internet capable devices (for free anywhere in the world I might add) and the Focus magazine doing the follow up, We Got You! The “Present” Regardless of your religious affiliation, this time of year moves people to kindness, joy, and giving presents. The presents may be material, edible, cultural, or any number of things that bring joy to the recipient.
Well through my journey in life, I’ve always been so motivated and focused on reaching the final destination, which were my dreams and goals. After several successes, I realized that once I achieved my goal or dream, there was satisfaction, but I was still missing something. Do you remember being a child going on a long trip and you couldn’t wait to get there. You were so excited, driving your parents crazy always asking “are we there yet”, “how much longer until we get there”. As you got older, you learned that if you stayed up all night, you could sleep the whole way there. By the time you woke up, you would be there. Well this is how I think many of us live our lives. So focused on the future, looking for our happiness to come in the form of the manifestation of our dreams. This may include; a successful career, obtaining wealth, buying that car or house, losing weight, being married, owning a business, or whatever your dreams may be. The most important element that we

miss is the process of reaching those goals and dreams. When we are so focused on seeing that end result, we miss all of the valuable lessons, and opportunities to be content where we currently are, while on our way to our goals. We close our eyes to the growth, patience, faith and character that is being developed, in order for us to posses that vision. We miss the beauty of being present and enjoying every moment of the journey. When we take the time to enjoy now and being present in the moment of every day, we realize that the journey is actually more valuable than the achievement of reaching the goal. Once the goal is achieved, you celebrate it, but then its over. If we treasure the entire process, we will be more grateful and humble by the time we get to our end. We’ll remember the people that helped us along the way; we’ll remember the excitement of seeing doors open that we didn’t think were possible We will learn how to walk by faith and not by what we see. We will appreciate each day of life for the joy that is hidden in those quiet moments and for the moments of being in need, but learning to give thanks for what you do have. Learning to take time and treasure each moment with the people you love. Never stop reaching for higher; just don’t forfeit your opportunity to enjoy the process. The true present is the present! “Star Tank” Katina Hamlar Roanoke’s version of the popular TV Show “Shark Tank” offers investment opportunities for local bussiness owners. Katina Hamlar of Hamlar Enterprises tells us about her role in this great project that provided funding to some of its participants
by TommyP A lot of people don’t realize that the star on top of Mill Mountain, was a gift from the then CEO of the Chamber of Commerce. The mountain was the tree, the star was (say it with me) the star, and the businesses of the valley were to represent the presents. I sat down with my friend, Mrs. Katina Hamlar of Hamlar Enterprises and asked her about her role in the “Star Tank” the city’s version of the popular TV show “Shark Tank” which brings investors in front of business owners in a hope to start something big. TP: Tell me a little more about Star Tank? KH: Ed Walker had a vision to awake the entrepreneurial spirit in Roanoke by bringing a rendition of the popular TV show “Shark Tank.” Realizing there are a lot of people who have started their own business, like the show, he wanted to bring investors to the table to listen to the pitch of these new ideas or already established businesses. TP: Yes, I’m very familiar with the show and want you guys to continue so we can record “Star Tank.” About how many businesses participated? KH: I was pretty surprised at the turnout. There were about 50 that registered and at the day that we held the tank, there were around 35 that actually showed up. TP: So what did you think about those who presented? KH: Wow, it was a lot of great ideas and inventions presented. One gentleman had created a mechanical hand to assist amputees. I was really impressed as well at the young entrepreneurs that came out with great ideas and businesses that The Focus Dec 2014 8
catered to the youth. TP: Awesome, that’s great. I use the term “urban” to stay away from being out front in saying, how many black businesses were on hand? KH: There were about 4 that actually showcased... TP: 4 out of 35? KH: Yeah it was a pretty small number. TP: Why do you think that was so? KH: I don’t know if it was the fact that there may not have been enough marketing in the urban areas or if it was fear. It’s hard to tell. We had some that pulled out at the 11th hour, not sure why. TP: What would you say the Star City needs as far as new businesses? KH: Diversity. Sure we could use a few more higher-end restaurants, but we also need tech companies and entertainment. Things “outside-the-box” in my opinion. TP: Well I’m glad you were selected to be on the panel. You definitely handle your business. KH: Thank you Tommy and Thank you for the interview. A wife, mother, and dedicated to her community, Katina Hamlar is definitely a star of the Star City!

New Looks for the New Year By Money Mon
Almost everyone wants to do something new for the New Year! One of those new things that would be on the list is a new look. Changes to your make-up wardrobe are always a must for you ladies and making it simple is another plus. Exploring new ways to keep a flawless look all year round without taking too much of your time is the start to achieving that new look for the New Year. To focus on a few, there is an everyday, playful party girl, or holiday romance look that will be highlighted with step by step details on how to apply. These looks will give you great confidence and have you looking fabulous for the New Year. The everyday look is one that is very important because it will be how you are seen amongst peers, family and friends on a daily basis. Apply mineral eye color to entire eyelids blending from the lash lines up. Sweep on eyeliner to upper lash lines, soften with a sponge-tip applicator or a brush. Finish eyes with a light coat of mascara, preferably black to top lashes only. Lightly dust bronzing powder along cheekbones and temples of forehead for a contoured look. Now apply a crème lipstick and or lip-gloss. You have now achieved a new everyday look that will be perfect for work and running errands in less than ten minutes. For the New Year’s party, you will love the playful party girl look. This look is used when you want to look your best at an event or party. Why not be the life of the party with glistening color? To start, highlight inner corners of the eyes with glistening gold mineral eye color. Brush mineral eye color of your choice from eyelids to creases. Create a cat eye with jet black gel eyeliner. Sweep on ultimate mascara in black, accent cheeks with mineral cheek color of your choice. Make sure the colors are not too bright it will take away from your natural look. Apply lipstick and then top with lip gloss. Remember just enough color is going make you brighten up the party. Last but not least, we have the holiday romance look and this look can be used when going on a date during the holidays with your mate or spouse. Why not have a classic look for mistletoe memories? The first step would be to highlight inner corners and brow bones with mineral eye color of your choice. Brush lavender fog mineral eye color across eyelids and accent with driftwood mineral eye color. Line upper lash lines and lower third of lash lines with deep brown eyeliner. Sweep on lash love mascara in black, accent cheekbones with sheer bliss cream blush. Line lips with natural lip liner, then apply rosette true dimensions lipstick. The colors are important for this look because they all come together nicely on any skin tone.

Taking It Back Help Portrait - Roanoke By MiYohn Baskin
Help-Portrait is a global movement of photographers, hairstylists and makeup artists using their time, talent and resources to give back to the community. Christmas Portraits are available at no cost to families who may not otherwise be able to afford them. A total of 392 events were held on December 6 in 28 different countries. Over 10,000 volunteers were able to provide 44,240 portraits this holiday season. The Help-Portrait event for the Roanoke Valley was held again for the second year at New Horizons Healthcare. George Warner along with Photographer Vincent Willis and a number of other volunteers helped to make the day a great success. In addition to family and group photos, children also had their pictures taken with Santa. Refreshments were also served for volunteers and those having their pictures taken throughout the day. Simple acts of love and kindness have the power to change our communities. The next International Help-Portrait date has been set for December 5, 2015.
