The self portrait was an exploration in alternative uses of type. The piece was created by overlaying text onto an image and varying the charcter, the size of the character and the density to achieve different textures and values to make the portrait ave more life and depth. I also tried to implement the Gestalt principle in various places to allow the viewers eye to finish the artwork.

The Peckerwood Poster was achived through photo manipulation. The idea of the poster was to make the garden appeal to a younger crowd. To attain this everything about this project had to be geared toward grabbing attention of college aged students (the new target audience), yet at the same time it could not loose the essence of what Peckerwood Garden was.

The Typographic Journey dealt with my ride to school and the sharp division between the machinery and presicion of a car and the natrual aspect of a bike. In this project the grid became the point of experimentation; trying to blend the natural curve of the golden section with the linear lines that are used to build it. The end product truly displays the disire of the to sides to mesh together ultimately the failed realization of it.



The pattern and wallpaper project an effort in trying to understand how to produce a sense of randomness out of regularity. In this aspect the project succeeded quite well, there is very little indication that the icon was manuvered into various positions in order to effectively eliminate any sort of outlying grid that may show through in the final compostion.

Neue Typographie layouts text by leading the eye of the viewer from one word, one group to the next. Thus we need to structure the text meaningfully, using differences in size, boldness, position in space, colour, etc. Neue Typographie uses the possible effects of the former background consciously and considers both the white background segments and the black type and shapes as design elements of equal value. With that, Neue Typographie has added a new element to the expressive potential of printing. It is exactly the use of large white areas that creates the startling impact of Neue Typographie.

The Jan Tschichold project was interesting.The creation of each piece strengthened an understanding of how to meaningfully organize anything based on the ideas that are to be presented. It also displayed how composing the same text in slight variations can radically alter the readers mindset when reading.

The “k� was the intial step into to typography. The project consisted of understanding the basic part and implementing that part, into a second more complex piece and finally taking that and producing the whole composition based on what direction the parts, of the whole, took it in.



Latitude Tea was the first attempt of generating an identity. The concept behind the company was scouring the world for the greatest teas known to man. From this, the idea evolved into an identity that had to embody that concept as well as being able to compete in the market place as a brand.

Bruce Mau’s Incomplete Manifesto was an experiment in the interpretation of what the writer is try to say to the reader and understanding how that reader should take in that information. The excerpts that were chosen were carefully anaylzed for voice, inflection, and rythem in order acheive the end goal.

REAL innovation in design, or any other field, happens in context. That context is usually some form of cooperatively managed enterprise. Frank Gehry, for instance, is only able to realize Bilbao because his studio can deliver it on budget. The myth of a split between “creatives” and “suits” is what Leonard Cohen calls a ‘charming artifact of the past.’

Kinetic typography is a change of pace from a normal compostion of type. Not only can the reader be lead by typography the typography can be accented by its movement in 3D space. The process to achieve this is simple (conveying the rythem of the speaker through the type) but must be precise otherwise the composition looses momentum and doesn’t deliver the impact desired.
