Communicative Skills

Excellent communicative skills and spirit of adaptation in different circumstances obtained thanks to the experience as a waiter and bartender (waiter at the restaurant “Osteria La Spiga” in Seattle, U.S.A. 2006, bartender at the Rho Fiera, 2011) and thanks to the experience as an exhibition guide (cultural guide for FAI, Fondo ambiente Italiano, Cesena 2003 - 2007, exhibition guide at the Lotto Fiera, Milano 2010). Furthermore, communicative skills strengthened by the partecipation to the Erasmus Exchange Programme in Portugal (Lisbon 2010-2011) and the development of the Final Project Thesis followed by the prof. arch. Inês Lobo at the Inês Lobo Arquitectos (Lisbon 2012-2013).

Organizing and managing skills

Excellent skills to work in a team, even international, gained during the university period in project teams in the design studios, and especially for the Final Project Thesis (with the student colleague Michele Fumagalli). During my fifth year at the Politecnico di Milano I organised with two fellow students (Mattia Cipriani and Giovanni Rovetta) a series of conferences called “Across Physiognomies”, at our faculty. The architects invited were: Julien de Smedt, Manuel e Francisco Aires Mateus, Flavio Barbini, Garcia Abril, Cino Zucchi, Franco Tagliabue, Stefano Pujatti.

Extra-curricular professional experience

Good ability in graphic comunication developed throughout the academic period in the design project classes and in the extra-curricular proposals for our faculty. High interest in finding constructive and material solutions for the projects, from 2008 to 2013 each summer for a two week period I followed and partecipated to the designing and construction of exhibitions at the Rimini Fair.

I had been studying piano for seven years in Cesena at the “Istituto di Cultura Musicale A. Corelli” from 2001 to 2007, attending the Solfeggio exam at the Conservatorio “Bruno Maderna” Cesena. Since highschool I was interested in art but during the university period I attended the elctive thematic classes and I developed a particular interest for contemporary art as a spatial provocation for architecture. I’m really passioned for Cinema, in 2010 I discussed my Bachelor Graduation with the thesis “Designing Processes Between Architecture and Cinema” finding comparisons between architect and director methodology. I like to travel and to spend time abroad, in addition to the Erasmus Exchange Programme and the Final Thesis in Lisbon, in 2005 I attended for a two week period the Aspect Language School in Dublin and during the university period I organised with other fellow students an architectural four day trip in Barcelona in 2010, supported by the Politecnico di Milano. 2003 - 2007 jun. 2005

RECOMMENDATION LETTER Tommaso Borghesi developed his Final Master Thesis during the year 2013, asking me to follow him as correlator. He developed a work about the theme “Mutable Permanences” with the aim of doing a reflection about the re-use of the heritage in the city of Lisbon, specifically in the Colina de Santana. I followed closely the development of the work, the rigorous, global and committed way with which this architect proposed to do a theoric reflection and a project that approached a series of present issues of difficult answer. Tommaso Borghesi will be surely an added value in any work team, where he will fulfill with rigor, competence and professionalism any kind of task, always combining a theoretical reflection and a practical ability to respond to the problems given to him.

Prof. Emilio Faroldi Coordinatore del Corso di Studio in Scienze dell’Architettura Dipartimento di Architettura, Ingegneria delle Costruzioni e Ambiente costruito Architecture, Built environment and Construction engineering ABC

To whom it may concern, I met Tommaso Borghesi during the organisation of the lecture series “Across Physiognomies” that took place at the School of Architecture of the Politecnico di Milano in the academic year 2011-2012. Along with two fellow students, he contacted me as professor and president of the Corso di Studi in “Scienze dell’Architettura” (Department of Architecture) to start a collaboration in order to invite architects from abroad to our Department that could share and compare their experience with other Italian architects and the students. That proposal showed his passion for architecture and his willingness to share it with his colleagues, with the desire to search for a relation between the academic and the professional world through an active participation during the university period. Subsequently, I accepted to follow Tommaso as Italian reference professor for his Final Thesis Project developed at the Inês Lobo Arquitectos in Lisbon with his colleague Michele Fumagalli, supporting him and trusting him as a student and an architect. I was very impressed with the depth and completeness of the work realised in Portugal characterized by an elevate maturity with regard to both the discussion of the themes of architecture and the project. Moreover, Tommaso is an independent person, whose creativity provides ideas and proposals while keeping a positive attitude in front of projects and professional challenges. In a work team, the sociality and openness of Tommaso are such that he is always at ease, being able to listen to his colleagues and to critics, establishing an optimal atmosphere for the elaboration and development of a project of architecture. I feel to strongly recommend Tommaso for his competence, dedication and vivacity that he proved during his education career, with the desire of learning from those standing in front of him, professors, architects and work colleagues. I wish all the best and lots of success in his future career.rds Best Regards Prof. Emilio Faroldi

MASTER DEGREE PROJECT // MUTABLE PERMANENCES

The theme developed is about the

PRE-EXISTENCES

and the different methodology that we can find in the

PORTUGUESES ARCHITECTS in WORKING ON THE EXISTENCE

with a personal designing language, yet questioning about the

IDENTITY OF THE ARCHITECTONICAL MANUFACT.

After the last catastrophes in Italy (earth-quake in L’Aquila in 2009, flood in Liguria in 2011 and earthquake in Emilia this year), it could be reason to dialogue and discusse on how we should behave in relation to a historical centre that was damaged and, in case of complete ruin, it is no more about restoring. Thus, from this scenario it comes out the provocation about what it could be, after these events, the image of a destroyed city. Specifically, this work is about the study and development of three interventions in three areas of the Colina de Santana in Lisbon. The Colina de Santana (hill of Santana), thanks to its physical conformation of hill between two rivers (nowadays underground) has always been an active centre of Lisbon life. Place for palaces and monasteries, more recently it turned to be place for culture in the health-care area with hospitals and Medicine Faculties and other several universities. In few years, the Colina will change radically, it is planned that all the hospitals that now are occupying the monasteries in the Colina, will be reunited in a single hospital centre in an other more easy-reaching area of the city, leaving the monasteries empty. This change produces an occasion to re-invent not only the re-use of the monasteries, questioning about their effective historical value and their space, but it is even an occasion to rethink the Colina as a whole, as a single organism with different layers of relations. Functions for the Colina and functions for the city, so that to re-activate this place as public space for the Colina and for the city.

INTERVIEWS This volume is the collection of the complete texts of the seven interviews that we have done during our thesis period. The interviews are presented in chronological order. Each interview presents a part with common questions that are the starting point for the elaboration of a critical text in relation to the actual portuguese architectonic practice. These questions are identical for each architect interviewed, the themes are about the context. the programme and the reconstruction. The interviews were prepared after a previous study of the works of each architect interviewed and this made possible to develop other not programmed questions during the interviews more specific according to the interviewed architect. In these interviews, it emerged clearly the deep relation between theory and practice where all the interviewed architects, speaking about their theories, made references to their projects.

ACROSS PHYSIOGNOMIES THREE LECTURE SERIES w/ Mattia Cipriani, Giovanni Rovetta

This series of conferences started from the desire of two friends of mine and me, all students of architecture, of meeting personally architects from whom we could learn how “to do architecture. What we wanted to understand is what being an architect means today for the invited architects. Not only listening and learnig from architects from abroad but even focusing on the italian architectonic issue. From a simple desire, thanks to the support of our faculty and professors, we started to invite some architects that could be available to do a conference at the School of Architecture in Milan. This proposal turned to be not only a simple series of conference, but a real comparison between professional and student architects, seeing in each conference side by side italian and stranger architects.

COMPETITION VIA EMILIA // CESENA prof. arch. Andrea De Matteis Andrea De Matteis Studio Milano

COMPETITION VIA EMILIA CESENA . ANDREA DE MATTEIS STUDIO // dec. 2011 - jan. 2012

The via Emilia in the part that is theme of the competition crosses an almost suburban area. Nowadays it is the typical urban landscape of frequent vehicles fluxes. Even though, recently the traffic in this street was reduced, the via Emilia entering the city of Cesena remains a place mainly for the vehicles. At the edges of the vehicular strip, in correspondence of some local enviroments, several commercial and service activities produce a vivacity and intensity of collective life. Public spaces are used by the local communities in a direct and informal way. From the way how people use, transform and fit out the places seems to appear a sense of belonging. The landscape of via Emilia is an intermediate world between the spaces of the crossing fluxes and the micro-places of life of the communities. The presence of the vehicles is an important aspect: the recognition of the black asfalt strip, territory of the driver, streetscape to be driven from 30 to 50 km/h, remains a strong element in the landscape of the via Emilia. Street that has always been a crossing place and a space of sociality.
