AFC Fylde

22/23 Position: 1st (NLN)

Founded: 1988

Nickname: The Coasters

Ground: Mill Farm

Key Player: Nick Haughton

Nick Haughton was the top scorer in the National League North last season. He scored 25 goals; from midfield. The 28 year old is truly a cut above, and is undoubtedly a star man for Fylde. He extended his contract, a massive boost to their aspirations, especially as I feel he is already an EFL level player. Haughton loves a strike from range, and has a thunderous shot on either foot, making him a threat from all over the pitch. He’s not just a goalscorer, as he creates chances for others, and he will be crucial this season.

Key Signing: Theo Richardson

A player I suggested in my ‘Sensible Transfers’ series, Richardson arrives from Buxton, where he had a really strong season. I’m a big fan of sides taking the best players from the division they’ve just been promoted from, and I have no doubt that Richardson will handle the step up with ease. He’s one of the very best with the ball at his feet he’s comfortable playing out from the back, and his distribution can be a real weapon. Not the biggest keeper but still great.

Manager: Adam Murray

A manager who I have a lot of time and respect for, Murray did an excellent job leading Fylde to the NLN title in a competitive division, and amidst a wonderful title challenge from King’s Lynn. As seemed the theme last season with the top teams, Murray operated with a back 3 and a fluid forward line, with the emphasis for goals actually placed on the attacking midfielders. Murray has recruited really well, adding the likes of Omotayo and Ustabasi.

Verdict:

I’ve seen a lot of people go very high on Fylde, and I wouldn’t be surprised if they did manage a top half finish, or even if they managed to finish in the top 7. However, I’m going to say they’ll have a strong return season, but one in which they will ultimately finish middle of the pack. They’ve got a strong squad, made some good additions, but it’s still a step up in quality. They’ll still put in some very good performances.

Aldershot Town

Manager: Tommy Widdrington

An appointment that came towards the back end of last season, and a manager who I believe will be very successful. Widdrington did a very good job at King's Lynn, where the wheels fell off after he departed. He plays with 3 central defenders, but it's a fairly fluid system up top, although he has used a focal point up top in his systems. He's brought his son with him to the Shots, as well as big forwards Kwame Thomas and Lorent Tolaj, who could thrive.

Key Signing: Christian Maghoma

Harfield is one of the very best left backs in the National League. I also feel he is Aldershot's most important player, both in the defensive phase but most crucially in the attacking phase. Harfield ranked 5th when it came to Expected Assists, highlighting the quality of chance he creates. He also has a quality delivery, and down the left hand side he will be crucial this season. Widdrington's system should suit him, in that it allows him to get forward more, and crossing to big forwards will be easy for him. A versatile, strong player, Maghoma is capable as both a central defender, or further forward in midfield. He is comfortable on the ball as a result, and should suit the 3 at the back system, with his physical capabilities making him a perfect fit for the system. He went down with injury in. a pre season friendly, so hopefully it's nothing serious, as Maghoma has the ability to be a big player for the Shots this season.

Verdict:

This is one of the predictions I'm not that happy with, but it is where I've ended up with Aldershot. I believe they are capable of pushing into the top half, but they've lost some key players, and I feel they would have liked to bring in a few more players of real quality. I don't believe they will be in any trouble though; Widdrington is a quality manager, they've recruited well, and have players he trusts too.

Altrincham

22/23 Position: 17th

Founded: 1891

Nickname: The Robins

Ground: Moss Lane

Key Player: Regan Linney

Alty are a fantastic side in build up, create lots of chances, but they have often lacked strikers to finish these opportunities. That changed when they recruited Linney from FC United of Manchester, a natural born finisher who is also fesity and agrressive within the box. He has a quick turn of pace, an eye for goal, and he helps in build up too. I feel Linney could be an outside shout for top scorer, with the forward leading the line for one of the more attacking sides in this division.

Key Signing: Chris Conn-Clarke

Conn-Clarke won my Young Player of the Season Award (whatever that's worth!) last season, and that was despite being recalled midway through the season. That is how impressive the young attacking midfielder was. He worked hard, had bags of quality and absolutely loved a screamer. What was not to like? The fact Alty have gone out and made this permanent is just superb. He's a wonderful footballer with a big future.

Manager: Phil Parkinson

We will no longer have to refer to Parkinson as the other Phil Parkinson. The term in itself was semi offensive, when you consider that this Phil Parkinson is very successful in his own right. He is a promotion specialist, something he's delivered on several occasions with both Alty and Nantwich. He has also successfully overseen the transition from part time to full time, and handed the Robins a big boost when he agreed to extend his contract.

Verdict:

It's no secret that I'm an admirer of Altincham and the way they play. I went fairly high on them last season, and while they did show flashes, they ultimately flattered to deceive. It's why I've been slightly cautious about them, and while I've still gone for a top 10 finish, I've held back on going for the playoffs. I do think they are well capable though, they've recrtuited well and hopefully won't get stung with loans.

Prediction: 10th

Barnet

22/23 Position: 5th

Founded: 1888

Nickname: The Bees

Ground: The Hive

Key Player: Harry Pritchard

The best goalscoring season of Pritchard’s life and arguably the best of his career full stop, 22/23 was a wonderful campaign for the 30 year old midfielder. It was also a brilliant debut campaign in Barnet colours, as his performances wowed Bees fans and also showed the strength of Dean Brennan’s recruitment. Pritchard didn’t just put up numbers in games that didn’t matter though; he came up big when needed, including a wonderful performance in the FA Trophy semi final.

Key Signing: Finley Potter

Barnet had a very experienced, but slow backline. That was until Finley Potter showed up on loan last season, with the young defender being an instant hit. Brennan has taken the wise decision to bring the defender in on loan again from Sheffield United, and I believe it’ll be a big season for the defender. Barnet’s already experienced backline is only getting older, so Potter’s youth will be crucial. He’s a quality defender in his own right too.

Manager: Dean Brennan

Irishman Brennan is a divisive figure, but for me he’s the best recruiter in the league. His media handling technique is certainly unique, but his no nonsense approach certainly gets results. He has his players buying into the collective, and it’s gotten him results. Nobody would have had Barnet in their top 5 last season, and they achieved that due to Brennan. He deserves plenty of plaudits, and I think he will take the Bees on another level this season. .

Verdict:

I think Barnet are being slept on by a lot of people.Many people felt that Barnet punched above their weight last season, and while they defied expectations I believe they have a top 5 quality squad. The loss of Ryan De Havilland is a blow, but I believe it’s one they can deal with. If they prioritise using Kabamba as the main man once again, they will be onto a winner. I’ve gone high on Barnet.

Boreham Wood

22/23 Position: 6th

Founded: 1948

Nickname: The Wood

Ground: Meadow Park

Key Player: Nathan Ashmore

The goalkeeper in this division. Ashmore is a man mountain, a keeper who is not beaten often. He was the main man in the best defensive record in the league. And I believe he will be the main man again. Despite being well over 100kg, Ashmore has the reflexes of a cat. Furthermore, he’s commanding, and organises his defence brilliantly. His distribution is crucial too, starting counter attacks with either foot. He is the star man, and they desperately missed him when he was injured in the playoffs.

Key Signing: Mo Sagaf

i believe this is the standout signing from Boreham Wood, due to a combination of Sagaf’s quality and also the lacklustre nature of some of their other business. Sagaf looked like he had genuine quality during his time at Dagenham, even if he was often used out of position. A player with real skill, Sagaf is a strong dribbler but also a player who can retain the ball. He will provide that sprinkling of quality that the Wood often lack.

Manager: Luke Garrard

In all honesty, I’m surprised the EFL hasn’t come calling before now. Garrard has shown he’s a manager who can put together an extremely well drilled side. His sides are the hardest to beat in this division, bar none, an incredible feat when you consider the division is full of such sides. Not only that but he’s led his sides on several historic cup runs, which not only help the club financially but also show that his tactics translate at a higher level too. This was a tricky one, as I actually think Boreham Wood’s squad looks worse than it did last season. However, to bet against the Wood would be foolish, and they still have a squad more than capable of achieving a top 7 finish. They are extremely tough to beat, and their 5-3-2 system allows them to get bodies behind the ball. Ndlovu will be crucial up top again, and I think they’ll dip slightly but still get playoffs.

Bromley

Manager: Andy Woodman

One of the league’s best characters and genuine nice guys, Andy Woodman is also an excellent coach, especially when it comes to working with youth. Selling young players on the Bromley project can’t be difficult, thanks to Woodman; he will give you a chance, regardless of age. He’s not just a manager blooding young talent though; he’s delivered success. He took Bromley to and won at Wembley, and delivered playoff football last season too.

Key Signing: Cole Kpekawa

For me, he’s one of the greatest non-league strikers of all time. He really is the ‘bogeyman’, in that nobody wants to come up against him. He’s the type of striker you see pre kick off and say ‘he always scored against us’, because he probably has done at some point. Cheek has scored 130 goals in the National League, the most since consistent records began in 2010. His goals per minute ratio, 191, is also excellent. He’s robust, a real handful and knows where the net is. A top, top striker. Bromley never really replaced Chris Bush, but with the signing of Maidenhead’s Kpekawa, they’ve done just that. A left footed centre half, who’s a progressive passer and hard as nails like Bush; it really is a perfect replacement. Bromley needed defensive reinforcements after the departure of Sowunmi, and Kpekawa brings solidity to the backline. He has the physical attributes to play in a back 3, and I think he’s a perfect stylistic addition..

Verdict:

I had Bromley to finish 5th place last season, but they finished 2 places short of that. Still, not many had them in their playoff places, which I found baffling, as Bromley are a really strong side with a really strong coach. They are hard to beat, especially at home on their artificial pitch, and their physical style makes them a nightmare for many teams. They’ve recruited well so I think they can improve.

Chesterfield

Manager: Paul Cook

The most high profile manager at the level, and potentially the most successful manager too. He might be an abrasive character to some, but Chesterfield fans love him, and it’s easy to see why. Cook has a real eye for talent, with his recruitment so far excellent. He also plays an attractive if underrated style of football, which I believe will flourish this season now that Notts have left the league.

Key Signing: Harry Tyrer

This could have been so many different players. Jeff King would be in my NL Dream Team, Darren Oldaker is sublime in the middle and Armando Dobra is arguably the most talented player in the league. But winger Colclough just nicks it, with his all round ability and incredible end product shining through. Colclough is a joy to watch. He’s equally strong on both feet, loves to beat his man, and has great decision making skills too. For me, he’s the best in the league. There’s a good argument that this could have been Will Grigg. However, I’m of the belief that a settled first choice keeper was the difference between Chesterfield going up last season. They’ve looked to rectify that as soon as possible, brining in highly rated stopper Tyrer from Everton on loan. He had a brilliant loan spell with Chester last season, where he looked like one of the best keepers in non league. He will be a huge addition for the Spireites this

Verdict:

I was only ever going to put Chesterfield top. Paul Cook is too good of a manager to bet against, and he very nearly took them to the EFL last season. For me, the Spireites are very much the standout side now that Notts and Wrexham have left the division. They should have too much quality for theur counterparts, and while I’m not suggesting they’ll break the 100 point barrier, like some have, I think they win the title.

Dagenham & Redbridge

22/23 Position: 10th

Nickname: The Daggers

Ground: Victoria Road

Key Player: Elliot Justham

Manager: Ben Strevens

One of my top choices for the Dagenham job, Strevs came into a difficult environment, steadied the ship, and then turned it round. He‘a a coach who has been immensely successful before, taking Eastleigh to the playoffs, and this appointment feels like a very good fit for the former player. He does face a rebuilding job, and to be honest I expected more moves to be made earlier. That’s my only slight concern: how well backed has Strevs been?

Key Signing: Frank Vincent Verdict:

There are scarce few keepers in the National League as expedienced as Justham. That experience is going to be even more crucial in a season where several senior heads have left the dressing room. It’s also a summer where speculation of a move for the keeper loomed, to Southend of all places, only for him to put an end to the doubts by extending his contract. He’s a very good keeper in his own right too. A solid shot stopper and one who has an extremely long kick, which allows him to feed Inih Effiong up top directly. At times last season I felt the Daggers lacked energy and legs in midfield. The addition of promotion winner Frank Vincent will certainly combat those key issues. A midfielder with the quality to match his energy, Vincent has a sweet left foot. He’s also versatile, and if Strevs chooses to persist with the wing back system he inherited then we may see Vincent used as a left wing back, a role he really took to in the latter portion of the season with Notts.

On the surface it might seem crazy that I’m suggesting the Daggers will actually regress this season, despite having a new manager who I rate. However, it’s a complete rebuild for the Daggers, with crucial senior players leaving all over the pitch. It’ll take time for a new dressing room to gel, and while they’ve added some quality, I’m not exactly sold on all of their signings. A tough one to call to be honest.

Dorking Wanderers

22/23 Position: 16th

Founded: 1999

Nickname: The Wanderers

Ground: Meadowbank

Key Player: Jimmy Muitt

This is one of those that Dorking fans might not think of straight away. However, during my research for my Notts transfer recruitment document Muitt came up, time and time again. From a statistical standpoint, he ranks extremely highly. He's in top percentiles for dribbles, crosses, box entries, pretty much every attacking stat. He is a player who matches the eye test too, but sometimes lacks that final piece of quality in the final third. If he can add that to his game he will be a top player this season.

Key Signing: Tony Craig

It's not an overstatement to suggest that Tony Craig's arrival was the biggest factor in Dorking remaining in the division. They were in freefall before he arrived, and his impact was far greater than his indidivual performances. The 38 year old organised the defence, brought stability to the backline, and eradicated the mistakes that were leading to far too many goals. He will be equaly as important in ensuring Dorking don't concede too many goals this season.

White's story is well documented, but he is the founder, owner, manager and everything in between for Dorking. He's been incredibly successful, lading his side through the divisions with promotion after promotion, and his goal will be to ultimately deliver Dorking into the Football League. He is certainly a character, as shown by the Bunch of Amateurs series, but what is often overlooked is his attacking play style. His side dominate the ball more than any other.

Verdict:

Predicting Dorking to actually get worse this season wasn't an easy decision. After all, since their inception they've seemingly only taken steps forward. However, one step they have also taken this summer is going towards a hybrid model, and while in the long run this will work in their favour, I expect it to have a detrimental effect in the short term. I don't think they will go down but it might be closer.

Prediction: 20th

Eastleigh

22/23 Position: 9th

Founded: 1946

Nickname: The Spitfires

Ground: Silverlake Stadium

Key Player: Charlie Carter

Without a doubt Carter was Eastleigh’s best player last season. He was also in the conversation for team of the season, such were the strength of his performances. He played brilliantly in a variety of roles., either from a more central role, or out wide, both scoring and creating chances.

You can see that Carter has played at a higher level; he plays with poise, has sumptuous technique, and he influences every game he plays in. He makes Eastleigh tick, and is one to really watch this season.

Key Signing: Paul McCallum

The loss of talisman Danny Whitehall would have hurt. He was their top scorer, and was capable of the spectacular. That blow will have been softened then by the return of former striker Paul McCallum, a prolific goalscorer at this level. He didn’t have his best campaign in 22/23, McCallum left Eastleigh in 2019, where he fired 35 goals in 67 games, and he will be happy if he can replicate that form. Manager: Lee Bradbury

A manager who I rate and respect, Bradbury looked like he might take Eastleigh into the playoffs, but unfortunately for the 48 year old, his side ran out of steam. He was tactically flexible, switching between a 4-2-3-1 and a 4-4-2 for large portions of the season, but his issue was often getting key man Carter into his best position. He’s a manager who knows the local area well, having manager both Havant and Bournemouth, and he will be hoping for a playoff finish.

Verdict:

This is one of the predictions I’m really uncomfortable with, and even now I’m second guessing myself. But it’s the highest I’m able to the Spitfires, in what would be a disappointing season. I actually think they’ve recruited well, added goals but they have lost a few key players. Furthermore, they ran out of steam last season when a playoff finish was in their own hands.

Ebbsfleet United

22/23 Position: 1st (NLS)

Key Player: Dominic Poleon

Manager: Dennis Kutrieb

Key Signing: Ousseynou Cisse

Few forwards in any division can boast that they are coming off the back of a 35 goal season. In fact, Poleon is the most in form forward in the division, and while it’s a step up in quality, it’s one he is more than capable of handling. Poleon has played a higher level before, and in truth the NLS always looked a cut below Poleon’s ability. He made short work of defences last term, with a combination of speed, power and incredible movement, of course combined with natural finishing instincts. Expect a big season. Ebbsfleet have lost key central midfielder N’Guessan, and while Cisse isn’t a like for like replacement, he will help replace some of the physical attributes they’ve lost with the departure. Cisse is a very good player in his own right too. He’s tall, rangy, experienced and is coming off the back of one of his best seasons to date. He was the key anchor in Eastleigh’s midfield, breaking play up by being disruptive. He also has the pedigree and ability to start

Verdict:

Kutrieb won the league last season, so his confidence must be at an all time high. He spearheaded a side who dominated the division last season, creating several chances, so much so that they had an xG of 98.52, by far the highest in Tier 6. He stuck with a 3-5-2 system, where he converted wingers to wing backs, allowing dynamic attacking play across the pitch. It’ll be interesting to see if he sticks to his principles this season, or if he tempers it for the step up.

The promoted side I feel most optimistic about is Ebbsfleet. They had an incredible 22/23 campaign, and they haven't lost too many key players either. While there is certainly a step up in ability between the 2 divisions, I don't see why the Fleet can't handle the step up. They play an exciting brand of football, have a very strong streike partnership in Poleon and Bingham, and I just have a good feeling about them.

Gateshead

22/23 Position: 14th

Founded: 1977

Nickname: The Heed

Ground: Gateshead International Stadium

Key Player: Greg Olley

One of the very best players in the league, Olley handled the step up, hitting double digit assists for the 2nd season in a row. A wonderfully creative player, Olley is versatile in that he's capable creating from deep, but also equally effective in and around the box. Gateshead utilised him in both positions, further forward towards the end of the season where Gateshead started to hit form. Olley is their chief creator, but he's not afraid to get stuck in either.

Key Signing: Archie Mair

I could not have picked a better fit for Gateshead than Archie Mair. He is of course now infamous for his playoff final heroics, and of course that was a huge moment for the young keeper, testament to not only his penalty saving ability but also his character. But what people might not realise about Mair is that he is one of the very best keepers with the ball at his feet. He plays almost as another CB, and this will suit Gateshead perfectly in build up.

Manager: Mike Williamson

A manager who is getting more and more plaudits, and deservedly so. Not only does he have his Gateshead team playing a wonderful, attacking brand of football, but he also made the right tactical tweaks when it mattered, and got his side comfortably to safety. He also had to deal with replacing his 50+ goal strike partnership, something he did with clever recruitment. He is another coach who will be in the EFL before long..

Verdict:

The Heed are many people's dark horses for the National League this season. I too am optimistic about their chances, but have tempered them slightly. Not only is this a massively competitive division, but I do feel that Gateshead do lack some squad depth and size, which may cost them in the hectic National League schedule. No doubt they'll get some big results, and a top 7 finish wouldn't surprise me at all.

Halifax Town

22/23 Position: 11th

Nickname: The Shaymen

Ground: The Shay

Key Player: Millenic Alli

Irishman Alli had a brilliant end to last season, which peaked as he made Wrexham's backline look foolish, scoring a brace against them in a brilliant 3-1 win. It was his first season at the level, and the 23 year old quickly adapted, finishing with 9 goals in 33 games. I believe this season he will kick on another level, and is capable of scoring even more. He looks at his best cutting inside from wide areas, which he drifts into, and exploits with his quick turn of pace and silky footwork.

Key Signing: Adam Senior

I was shocked when I saw Senior had made his loan move with the Shaymen permanent. He was fantastic last season, a defender who was equally comfortable bringing the ball out from the back as he was defending. He's only 21 too, so has massive upside, and I am still shocked that an EFL club didn't take a look at Senior. Their loss is Halifax's gain, and he will be even more important this season as key defender Jesse Debrah looks set to depart.

Manager: Chris Millington

Millington showed that patience is absolutely crucial when it comes to a manager. It was his first senior role, being promoted from assistant after Pete Wild departed, and it understandably took time for him to adjust. Plenty were calling for him to be sacked, but he ultimately proved them all wrong, leading Halifax to victory at Wembley, writing his name into the club's history. I feel he faces an equally tough season this year though.

Verdict:

Halifax ended the season strongly, so their fans are going to think this prediction is incredibly harsh. However, just like last season they've lost some key players. Top goalscorer Dieseruvwe left for Hartlepool, Kian Spence made the move to the EFL and Jesse Debrah still hasn't signed. They struggled to begin with last season, and I expect it to play out exactly the same this term.

Key Signing: Mani Dieseruvwe

The fact that Hartlepool have been able to keep hold of Umerah is something of a miracle. And looking at their recruitment, both with the signings of Dieseruvwe and Wreh, I don’t believe the Poolies believed they’d keep hold of him either. The 26 year old scored 12 goals last season, and despite playing in a relegated side he looked a real handful throughout the campaign. He scored 16 goals for part time Wealdstone the last time he was at this level too, so he should guarantee a decent return this season. An absolute monster of a man, one who holds the ball up well, but crucially one who scores goals too. He had the best goal to minute record in the National League in 21/22, and while he didn’t quite keep that up for Halifax this season, he was still their main goal threat, scoring a respectable 13 goals. He’s able to perform as the focal point for a side, and due to his huge frame is an absolute menace in the air. Given the right service he scores for fun.

Verdict:

While he didn’t keep them up, he made a good go of it. And if nothing else, it was wonderful preparation for this season, as the Pools couldn’t ask for a better head coach to lead them into the new campaign. Askey was the subject of the strangest decision in the National League last season, when York let him go, a decision they immediately regretted. He’s a proven promotion winner, and someone who will want to be back in the EFL in 12 months time. There’s more reason to be optimistic about a side being relegated from League 2 than there was last summer. For starters, Hartlepool have John Askey in charge, a man I believe is one of the very best at this level. They’ve also got a strong squad, made some good signings, and seem to be in an altogether better place than Oldham and indeed

Scunthorpe were 12 months ago. Playoff contenders for me.

Kidderminster Harriers

22/23 Position: 6th (NLN)

Nickname: Kiddy

Key Player: Krystian Pearce

It brings me great pleasure to talk about Pearce, one of the first players I loved as a County fan. He's had a long career in both the EFL and non-league, and last season he was something of a revelation after making the move from Hereford. He's a West Midlands boy, and a quality defender. While he perhaps doesn't have the same turn of pace he used to, like all great defenders he has learnt to adapt his game. He was an ever present at the heart of the defence last season, and his leadership qualities will be crucial too.

Key Signing: Jack Lambert

Winger Lambert was a player that was tipped for an EFL move earlier last season. His form seemed to tail off alongside Darlington's, but he still had a wonderful season, scoring 13 goals and assisting another 6. It was something of a breakthrough campaign for Lambert, a player who has always had the ability, but not always had the platform to show it. He's an exciting player, and I feel it's something of a coup for Kiddy to land his signature.

37 year old Penn is one of the youngset managers in the league, but he has been in charge of the Harriers since 2020, shortly after he retired as a player there. He is already a club hero, and delivering them back to the National League has only cemented that status. He of course led them on their famous FA Cup run in 21/22, and he had to deal with losing some key players last season too. He rebuilt the side, got it to win when it mattered most, and reaped the rewards.

Verdict:

It pains me to say it, as I really like Kiddy as a club, and they were my picks to win promotion through the playoffs last season. However, I'm just not sure they've got the pre existing quality to survive, nor am I sure they have added the required quality to keep them up either. 22/23 wasn't their best campaign, and it was only really at the end of the season where they came to life. Relegation contenders.

Manager: Alan Devonshire

The oldest manager in the league, at 67, and also the most experienced manager in the league too. He has been managing since 1995, and was playing for West Ham as early as 1976; he really has been around the game for a long time. He has a bag of tricks, and each season he seems to pull them out to save part time Maidenhead from the drop.

Key Signing: Craig Ross

Not only do I believe that ANG is Maidenhead's best player, I also feel he is one of the best wingers in the league. At the very least he is one of the most exciting, with ANG ranking 3rd for Dribbles per 90. The 28 year old loves to take on the opposition full back, but there will be even more pressure on ANG to produce goals this season after Emile Acquah departed for the Football League. He only bagged 4 goals last season, so he will need to at least double that tally. But either way, he will be a lot of fun to watch again this year. Maidenhead lost both of their keepers last season, so an experienced and reliable shot stopper was top of the list. In former Woking keeper Ross they have found exactly that, with the 33 year old stopper already having over 390 career league games under his belt. He's well seasoned at the level, and he brings what Devonshire likes, especially in the core of his side; experience. I'd expect him to organise the defence and lead by example.

Last season they were less formidable, but in previous seasons Devonshire has enjoyed taking scalps off of the big teams.

Verdict:

Never bet against Alan Devonshire. Yet I am. I feel foolish doing it even now, but time runs out for every side eventually, and I feel this season might be the one for Maidenhead. Last season it was close; if the season had been a few games longer, I believe Torquay would have caught them. They lost all form at the end of the campaign, and have now lost some key players, not least top scorer Acquah.

Prediction: 22nd

Oldham

22/23 Position: 12th

Founded: 1895

Nickname: The Latics

Ground: Boundary Park

Key Player: Magnus Norman

Norman is one of the finest shot stoppers in the National League, and one who I find to also be one of the most underrated. Norman was an ever present in goal last term, something which earned him an England C call up before he had to pull out with injury. At 26 Norman is entering his prime years, and Oldham fans will be encouraged with the best yet to come. The big stopper had a strong debut campaign, playing 42 times, and he will build on that this term.

Key Signing: Shaun Hobson

Oldham lost their player of the season when Yarney left for Tranmere. But they’ve replaced him well, very well in fact; I believe in Shaun Hobson they might actually have a better player. It’s a move that works for the player, with a return to the North West always on the cards. Sides in EFL were very close to his signature, a sign of the positive place Oldham find themselves in. An athletic, confident defender who is very comfortable bringing the ball out.

Manager: David Unsworth

Despite him turning it round and finishing the season extremely strongly, the jury is still out on David Unsworth. The 49 year old arrived with very little non league experience, and honestly it showed to begin with.

However, as he found his feet the results began to follow, and Oldham finished the season in strong form. He’s a highly rated coach, one who impressed at Everton, and he’s used those links to good effect thus far.

Verdict:

I’m sure there will be plenty of Oldham fans who will be disappointed with this one. That in itself is crazy to say when you consider it would be an 8 place improvement on last season. But expectation is high at Boundary Park, with Oldham once again one of the favourites for the title, with this year feeling more of a legitimate title challenge. They’ve got a well balanced side, full of playoff quality. Top 5 for me.

Oxford City

22/23 Position: 3rd (NLS)

Nickname: The Hoops

Ground: Marsh Lane

Key Player: Zac McEachran

Part of the McEachran footballing brothers, 27 year old Zac may be playing at the lowest level, but he is arguably the one who is the most important player to his team. McEachran is the heartbeat of this Oxford City side, making everything tick. The former Chelsea youngster has made over 100 appearances for his hometown club, and his dazzling on the ball ability marks him out as a key player. He will be fun to watch this season, and I'd expect higher interest before the end of the season.

Key Signing: Tafari Moore

I've been really impressed with Oxford's recruitment, even if it has only been a few bodies through the door. They've taken advantage of their part time status and location, and have brought in some of the best part time players in non league. One such signing is that of Moore, who had an excellent season, making it into the NLS Team of the Season for his performances at LB for St Albans. What's even more impressive is that he is actually naturally a RB;

Manager: Ross Jenkins

32 year old Jenkins is undoubtedly the youngest manager in the league. He began coaching at 28, with Oxford City, after his career was cut short due to injury. Jenkins took charge on a full time basis in 2022, and in his first full season in charge he led the part time outfit to promotion. It's an incredibly quick rise, and it's certainly an impressive one from the former England youth international. If anyone can keep them up, it's him

Verdict:

It may seem like a bit of a cop out to pick one of the newly promoted sides to go straight back down, but considering the disparity in resources when compared to other sides at the level, it's really hard not to have them to go back down. They've only added a few players, and while they've been quality, I still feel they need more if they are to survive. They will be underdogs for sure, but they go down for me.

Rochdale

Manager: Jimmy McNulty

One of the youngest managers in the league, McNulty was still a player as recently as last season. He's been with the club for 8 years, and has witnessed the club's downfall from League 1 to the National League in that time too. Is he the right man for the job? Well, he knows the club well. I'd have perhaps said a more experienced boss would be the way to go, but since being given the job at the end of last season McNulty has done well, so who knows.

Key Signing: Kairo Mitchell

There were a few players I was optimistic would be massive players for Rochdale this season due to their success at this level last season. One was Toby Mullarkey, but he has departed for Grimsby, and another was Tahvon Campbell, who has been loaned to Wealdstone. The last remaining player who had big success last season was Sinclair. He had a brilliant time with Altrincham, scoring plenty and creating chances too. I was surprised they loaned him out in the first place, and he will come up big. Notts fans will likely laugh at this suggestion, but everywhere else at this level Mitchell has been a success. Last season he went on loan to Eastleigh, where he looked a formidable forward, one who is capable of getting amongst the goals. At his best he is a physical forward, an excellent athlete, and one who works really hard on and off the pitch. I won't sit here and say he will be the most prolific; he will waste chances. But he will score plenty too.

Verdict:

Rochdale fans might be disapointed with this prediction, but I do actually feel I've been slightly generous here. The step down into the National League is always a culture shock, and the quality of the league will really surprise the Dale. They have an inexperienced manager, a thin squad, and while they've made a few decent additions I still don't believe they have the strongest squad. Mid table would be a success.

Solihull Moors

Manager: Andy Whing

Whing is a new appointment this summer, following the dramatic dismissal of Neal Ardley. He has big boots to fill, as Ardley took Solihull to the playoff final just a year ago. The West Midlands based boss had an excellent playing career, and his managerial one has started strong too. He's been in charge of Banbury United since 2020, and his former forward Jack Stevens is already at the club. I expect him to continue with the possession play style.

Key Signing: Joe Newton

On our end of season pod, with OffTheLineBlog and NL Musings, I made the bold call that Josh Kelly would be the player of the season this year. It's a big claim, and it's one I believe in. Kelly is a well rounded forward, one who I believe is at his best playing through the middle. I do fear that Kelly may be used in wide areas due to the other additions, such as Connor Hall, also looking to play down the middle. However, if used in his favoured position, Kelly will shine, bringing goals, assists and general link up play. At the back last season Solihull had 2 problems; the kack of defenders who were comfortable playing out from the back, as the style dictates, and also the lack of a settled left back option. The arrival of Joe Newton covers both of these, and can, in my opinion, kick on a level this season. The 22 year old had a strong season for Havant in the NLS, and this move allows him to move back closer to home. He's a young full back with plenty of potential too.

Verdict:

Solihull are very much an unknown quantity this season, and this is reflected in the variety of positions Solihull have been predicted in. They've got an exciting new coach and some exciting new players, and if it all clicks into place they have good reason to be optimistic this season. I'm also not necessarily saying it won't click together, but I do feel they will take time to adjust.

Middle of the pack for me.

Southend United

22/23 Position: 8th

Nickname: The Shrimpers

Ground: Roots Hall

Key Player: Cav Miley

One of the signings of last season, Miley was incredible for Southend as the lynchpin in their midfield. He was constantly breaking up attacks, starting them himself too, and the Jersey born midfielder was very much in the conversation for Team of the Season. He played a lot of minutes last season, and the same will be required of him again this term with the lack of bodies at the club. Still, you would expect Miley to have a similarly impressive campaign, as the heartbeat of this Southend side.

Key Signing: Jack Wood

Wood is NOT a new signing, but as Southend are currently under an embargo, and Wood was out on loan last season, he is the closest thing we are going to get. Wood has already made an impact in pre season; he scored a hattrick in a friendly, showing what a goal threat he can be. He was immesne for Tonbridge Angels last season, and will be a key man this time around. His return actually puts Southend in a better position in the final third in my opinion.

This man should be given a medal. Or some sort of reward anyway. He's had had to work under extremely trying circumstances, has held himself with dignity throughout, and has produced brilliant results on the field too. He's clearly a wonderful man manager, keeping so many players happy when off the field issues suggest otherwise. And he has made his side hard to beat. If anyone can do it against all the odds, it's Maher and his staff.

Verdict:

I just cannot look past that possible 10 point deduction. I'm not suggesting either way if it will happen, but the fact that it looms there is only going to effect performances. Southend don't have a bad XI, but they have little to no squad depth whatsoever, and remaining under embargo means they will be unable to rectify that. They are 1 or 2 injuries away from a crisis and haven't even had a proper pre season either.

Wealdstone

22/23 Position: 13th

Nickname: The Stones

Ground: Grosvenor Vale

Key Player: Jack Cook

Club captain Jack Cook seems to get better each season. He is comfortable on the ball, as is required in Wealdstone's system, and he is a solid defender too. He organises the backline, is very strong in the air too, meaning he can make meaningful contributions at both ends of the pitch. Cook played 44 games for Wealdstone last season, an ever present, and in just 2 seasons he has made over 80 league appearances for Wealdstone already. He's a crucial part of this side.

Key Signing: Jed Ward

The Stones were dealt a big blow when keeper and England C international Sam Howes made the move to League 1 Leyton Orient. However, Stuart Maynard has shown he has the ability to get his keepers playing well and settling quickly. The latest in that line is Bristol Rovers stopper Jed Ward, who, obvious name puns aside, looks to be a very good prospect. He will be asked to play out from the back, something his academy background will only help

Manager: Stuart Maynard

In my opinion, Stuart Maynard is one of the best managers in the division. The job he has done is nothing short of remarkable. With just 2 training sessions a week the BT Engineer gets his side playing beautiful, attacking football. Their style resembles that of 80s Brazil, and not just when they're wearing their yellow away kit. The way he has his side playing is a testament to his footballing brain. He also improves individuals; a top, top coach.

Verdict:

I want to say how much I respect Wealdstone as a club, and how big of a fan I am of the people running the club, especially the management team. However, with the lack of resources and a very competitive division, I feel they may fall a few places this season. Considering what a great job Maynard has done, it wouldn't surprise me to see them finish in the top half, but I'm being more cautious than that.

Woking

22/23 Position: 4th

Founded: 1887

Nickname: The Cards

Ground: Kingfield Stadium

Key Player: Rohan Ince

The best piece of business Woking did all summer was to get this man to sign a contract extension. Ince is a wonderful footballer, a real powerhouse in central midfield, one who wouldn’t look out of place in a higher division. Blessed with a wonderful range of passing, Ince is capable of dictating a game from the middle of the park. Due to his size and power he’s also effective in both boxes, and he covers plenty of ground considering his age. Also loves a screamer.

Key Signing: Joe Day

Woking chopped and changed keepers last season, with experienced number 1 Craig Ross losing his spot to Will Jaaskelainen. The Finnish keeper extended his deal with the Cards, but they’ve since signed a new keeper, Joe Day from Newport County. The 32 year old brings a wealth of experience, with over 300 EFL appearances. He’s a reliable shot stopper, one who should be more than comfortable with the step down. Will add even more organisation.

Things have gone from strength to strength in Sarll’s managerial career. His decision to move from Yeovil to Woking was justified after his former employees were relegated, while Sarll led the Cards into the playoffs for the first time. To say Sarll has worked miracles would be disingenuous, as he’s been well backed, but he’s still had Woking punching above their weight. He was the only man to take points off Wrexham at the Racecourse last season.

Verdict:

It may seem lazy to put the 2 sides that finished 3rd and 4th in the top 2 spots, but it’s how I see it going this season.

Woking are a really strong outfit, are well backed and have made some strong additions to an already quality squad.

They have a manager who I really rate in Sarll, one who I believe is capable of taking them up another level this season. It’ll be tough, but I’m expecting a top 3 finish.

Prediction: 2nd

York City

22/23 Position: 19th

Nickname: The Minstermen

Ground: LNER Community Stadium

Key Player: Olly Dyson

A wonderfully well rounded footballer, I find Dyson is at his best in the final third when he’s given the licence to drift forwards. He’s a versatile player though, so is capable of playing deeper in midfield or even as a makeshift full back, such is the quality that Dyson possesses. He showed his quality for England C, making an immediate impact, looking very tidy on the ball. He was named clubman of the year last year, and it’s easy to see why, with 100% effort guaranteed, and genuine ability to match.

Key Signing: David Stockdale

I could have very easily put Tyler Cordner in here, and I do believe he’s the best signing they’ve made. I could have also chosen Dipo Akinyemi or Callum Howe, such is the strength of the recruitment so far. But this man, David Stockdale, must take credit for these moves, as he’s not only been signed to be number 1, but Head of Recruitment too.

Assuming his off the field role doesn’t distract from his playing, he will easily be the best keeper in the league too.

Manager: Michael Morton

A young manager who I rate really highly, Morton looks to be a meticulous planner. He approaches the game in a really unique and interesting way, from data led approaches to filming pre season games with a drone to provide a tactical camera. It’s fresh, innovative, exciting, and it actually ties in perfectly with the project as a whole. Whether he has the required experience to deliver promotion is another question, but I really rate Morton.

Verdict:

An immensely exciting project, one I have no doubt will be a success in the long run, I just feel it may be a step too soon for all of their new signings to click together and perform. In many ways its a similar story to last summer, albeit with a higher calibre of player. Their quality should shine through, and have them there or thereabouts, but I’ve got them down to ultimately fall short of the playoff places. Sorry York fans.
