WHEN CHEESE MET CAKE OWNER ENJOYS THE FLAVOR OF SUCCESS

Photography Provided

Greenwood residents are quickly discovering the sweet treats served up by When Cheese Met Cake. After a period of housing the bakery in her home, Owner Dannielle Bryan recently opened a brick-and-mortar site. Customers can’t seem to get enough of the fresh, high-quality New York-style cheesecakes, cakes and cookies.

After working in the dental industry for 13 years, Bryan dove into baking to stay afloat during the pandemic. When word got out about her delicious baked goods, customers would pick up orders for a group or neighborhood. She credits her father with giving her an entrepreneurial spirit and the courage to pursue her dream of opening a bakery.

“I had my son in December 2019 and went back to work in February for a few weeks, then I was laid off due to the pandemic,” she says. “It was scary and it put us behind, so I decided I would utilize the skills I had been working hard on and open a little bakery from home. Little did I know it would grow so fast, and I would have the best support and customers a girl could ask for.”

“My dad tried so many businesses and side jobs to make ends meet, and I truly feel that is where I got my dream to own my own business,” Bryan adds. “He never gave up. He just revamped or tried something new. You always dream, pray and work hard on anything you believe in, especially a business. You do

everything you can to ensure it succeeds, and here I am selling out each day.”

The fact that the bakery sells out is a plus for the customerseach day, fresh goods are offered. Everything is baked daily, put into a refrigerator overnight and then sliced. Toppings are put on just before the door opens.

Customers love anything with fruit such as strawberry compote or black cherries, but New York-style cheesecakes with chocolate and peanut butter ingredients are also popular. The

Brownie Fudge Sundae is baked with Ghirardelli chuck chocolate and fudge. The Ganache It’s Peanut Butter is swirled with and topped with peanut butter. Bryan discovered that people go crazy

for anything with Oreos inside, hence the Oreogasm New Yorkstyle cheesecake.

The bakery’s New York-style cheesecake can be purchased by the slice, and other items are available as well. In the daily rotation, customers might find extra-large brownies, cupcakes, cake slices, Bundt cake, cookie sandwiches and cake pops. Preordering for weddings, anniversaries and graduation parties is offered.

“I have had so much support and I am forever grateful,” Bryan says. “It is a huge reason I am in a brick and mortar now, living my dream. I will forever be thankful for the community for all the love and support they have shown me and my little bakery.”

THE BARN AT BAY HORSE

INN OWNER EXCITED ABOUT NEW VENTURES

Nothing feels better than fulfilling a community need. Years ago, Amanda Johnson, owner of the Barn at Bay Horse Inn, used to have to drive her daughter, Emma, to Louisville for horse training lessons.

When Johnson was presented with the opportunity to purchase Travis Creek Stables, located on Stones Crossing Road, she jumped at the opportunity, since a few of Emma’s horses were already boarding there.

Earlier this summer she established the Stables of Bay Horse Inn, which offers horse training, boarding, periodic camps, parties, and riding lessons for ages 5 and up.

“We’re excited to offer our years of experience and knowledge to kids, teens and adults of all riding levels,” says Johnson, who envisioned making the Stables an extension of the Bay Horse brand. “We provide a safe and welcoming environment, and offer both English and Western riding lessons. There is plenty of opportunity to grow at the Stables location. Our community needs this so badly.”

At the core of the business is a horse named Shiloh’s Old Gold, affectionately known as Shiloh. When Emma was 4 years old, her brother, Eli, and their mom moved into a log cabin that sits behind the Barn at Bay Horse Inn (though at the time the event barn and saloon didn’t exist.) A neighbor, Ellen, introduced the children to her horses, and so began Emma’s love for these magnificent creatures. Emma’s obsession with horses quickly grew.

Johnson knew her daughter wanted to not only ride, but also build a life around horses.

Ellen could see the passion Emma had for horses and knew her perfect companion was Shiloh, a sorrel Quarter Horse. Before pairing the two, Ellen encouraged the family to find

property with a pasture and a barn.

Johnson promised Emma that she would bring her dream to fruition. In 2012, when Emma was 6 years old, they bought Shiloh.

“Shiloh was Emma’s first show horse,” Johnson says. “He’s shown the [American Quarter Horse Association] circuit for years.”

Johnson had her own dream - to build a place where the community could gather to create lifelong memories. She purchased the property that Bay Horse sits on, as well as the property in front. In 2016 she opened the Barn at Bay Horse Inn, a rustic yet elegant wedding and event center that’s hailed as one of the best event venues in Indiana.

For the past 11 years Shiloh has lived on the residential part of the Bay Horse property. Three years ago Johnson remarried and moved to her husband’s family farm in Bargersville.

For years, Shiloh has been a fixture at the Barn at Bay Horse Inn.

“People drive by and see Shiloh,” Johnson says. “Kids come up to the fence. He’s been in a lot of wedding photos.”

In recent years Johnson has been in touch with Mike Cunningham, founder of Cunningham Restaurant Group, to discuss developing the property in front of Bay Horse. Now that project is coming to fruition and will feature Stone Creek restaurant, Bru Burger Bar, and retail space. Construction will begin in late August or early September. Shiloh’s barn, however, will remain.

Johnson hopes that at some point it may be refurbished and used for private dining. When Cunningham asked Johnson if she wanted to name the property, her answer came easily.

“Shiloh’s

Corner,” she said.

Several weeks ago Shiloh moved to the farm in Bargersville, making this a fullcircle journey for Emma, who will attend the University of Georgia next fall on a scholarship, to ride on a Division I equestrian team.

Johnson has built a legacy rooted in Shiloh’s story and her passion for helping others create lifelong memories. As Shiloh lives out his final years on the farm, every new adventure with the Bay Horse brand is rooted

in the connection a child can have with a horse. The hope is that Shiloh’s legacy will inspire another child to find and pursue their passions and dreams.

“Emma struck gold with Shiloh,” says Johnson. As did the community.

CENTER GROVE GRAD COMPETES ON U.S. SWIM TEAM AT SPECIAL OLYMPICS WORLD GAMES

Liam Price, a 2020 graduate of Center Grove High School, competed at the Special Olympics World Games in Berlin, Germany, last June.

It’s a memory he will always treasure. Liam, a student at the University of Indianapolis, says he had to work hard to earn a spot on a swim team to compete in the games. He also had to keep busy with his schoolwork at the same time.

“I’m a class of 2024 communications major, and the first Special Olympic athlete on the University of Indianapolis swim and dive team,” he says.

Liam, who has autism, enjoyed the challenge of pursuing a spot on the team.

“I earned a spot on the Special Olympics team last November,” Liam says. “I had to go to San Antonio, Texas, before being selected to the team. I had to go through three days of tryouts. There were three coaches in San

Antonio that put all the swimmers through several hours of tryouts to see if we could make the team and travel to Germany.”

Liam says he had a great time at the games.

“On Saturday, June 17, 2023, I was at the Olympic Stadium in Berlin,” Liam says. “It was the 16th Special Olympic games.”

Liam’s father, Jon, who also went to Berlin, says there were 6,500 athletes and Unified Partners at the games.

“There were athletes from 190 countries,” Jon says. “It was a great experience. Liam and I had never been out of the country and it was beautiful in Berlin.”

There were 26 different sports in the games,

supported by 3,000 coaches and 18,000 volunteers.

“It was also the first time since 1936 that an Olympic flame had been lit in Berlin,” Liam says. “Jesse Owens won gold medals in this stadium.”

Liam finished eighth in the 400-meter freestyle and sixth in the 100-meter backstroke, and also earned coveted Olympic hardware. “Liam and his team also received a silver medal in the 4x50-meter relay,” Jon says.

The Special Olympics U.S. swim team also received two gold medals, six silver medals and one bronze medal.

“The result of the competition was that the world came together as one to cheer on Special Olympic athletes,” Liam says. “It did not matter what nation it was, what language was spoken or which sport it was. Every nation cheered just as loud for those finishing first.”

The event also gave Liam and Jon a chance to meet people from all over the world.

“I like meeting new people from different countries,” Liam says. “I also enjoyed showing my swimming skills to the world and hanging out with my Special Olympics U.S.A. teammates. My experience was very positive. I met people from around the world that had interests in common with me. My new friends liked music, swimming and sports of all kinds. I met athletes from Slovakia, Macau, Great Britain, Germany, Ireland, Kuwait, Portugal, China, Australia and Canada.”

Liam also learned new facts about the games. “A fun fact that I learned is that the 2027 Special Olympics World Games will be held in Australia,” Liam says.

Jon also had a great time.

“I loved the opening ceremonies at Olympic Stadium,” Jon says. “My wife, Cindy, and I are so proud of Liam. Liam had the goal to go to the World Games in his sights since the age of 14. Liam’s Coach, Jason Hite, helped Liam with his training. He encouraged Liam to dream big and train hard. Linda Boothe,

our Johnson County Special Olympics coordinator, encouraged Liam to believe in his dream. It was great to watch Liam walk around Olympic Stadium as a member of Special Olympics U.S.A. It brought tears to my eyes.”

Jon also loved watching Liam and his Special Olympics teammates compete on the world stage.

“All of the athletes are Olympians that made history in Berlin with the lighting of the Olympic flame,” Jon says. “Cindy and I are proud of the example of good sportsmanship, kindness and commitment Liam has shown to the sport of swimming and to his competitors.”

Jon will never forget the games.

“It was the experience of a lifetime that I will cherish forever,” Jon says. “Cindy and I are so grateful for all the wonderful people in our community that have created a spark that helped Liam to believe in himself. Without the opportunities of inclusion in high school, college and Special Olympics that have been given to Liam over the years, I am very confident Liam would not be experiencing his dream to represent the United States at the Special Olympics World Games.”

For Liam, the Special Olympics presented a challenge he was able to meet successfully. “Special Olympics has changed my life through the power of inclusion,” Liam says.

“Special Olympics Johnson County is my home. I have made awesome friends through sports competitions.”

Jon hopes Liam’s success will inspire other people.

“Cindy and I hope more families will be searching for a place for their son or daughter to grow within a sport,” Jon says. “Special Olympics Johnson County has given Liam a place to grow physically and intellectually.”

Liam also encourages other kids to get involved in Special Olympics and enjoy the positive experiences he has had.

“If you know anyone 8 years old or older who has an intellectual disability, Johnson County Special Olympics wants you,” Liam says. “You can contact them at specialolympicsjc@gmail.com.”

TRAYCE JACKSONDAVIS SCORES A SPOT IN THE NBA AS A GOLDEN STATE WARRIOR

Center Grove High School’s (CGHS)

most decorated boys’ basketball player had his dream of playing professional basketball realized when he was selected 57th in the second round of the 2023 NBA Draft in June. The former Trojan will play for the Golden State Warriors in San Francisco after they acquired the draft rights to the 6’9” forward from the Washington Wizards.

“This is the best organization in the world for basketball,” says Jackson-Davis. “They strive for greatness. They strive to win championships and that’s something I want to be a part of.”

TownePost.com / AUGUST 2023 / CENTER GROVE MAGAZINE / 19
Writer / Kevin Conrad, CG Sports Network Photography / Golden State Warriors, Getty Images, Brian Brosmer, JWCreative.Indy, Center Grove High School, Jackson Family

“I think he is the steal of the draft,” says Jackson-Davis’ CGHS head basketball coach, Zach Hahn. “I talked to 30 of 32 teams in the NBA over the last 2 years and all of them raved about him. Everything happens for a reason, and he landed the perfect opportunity with Golden State. I think he will slowly earn playing time and help them compete for an NBA Championship as early as next season if given the opportunity.”

Jackson-Davis played four years of varsity basketball for CGHS, helping the Trojans to their first final-four appearance in the state tournament. He set school records in scoring, rebounding, and blocked shots and earned the Indiana Mr. Basketball award following his senior season in 2019.

“When I was growing up, I didn’t even know I was going to be a basketball player until about my junior year of high school. I got pretty good at it and I thought I had a shot at it so I continued to work.”

“The first change in Trayce was his body finally developing into the athlete that you see today,” says Hahn. “I give Trayce and Coach Mills (CGHS Strength Coach) a lot of credit for getting him physically ready, even with the special athletic ability that he already demonstrated. You don’t see many 6’9” sophomores front squatting and power cleaning. It gave him a competitive advantage. The second change that happened was his mentality. He went from being unsure about himself confidence-wise and wasn’t intrinsically motivated to a relentless worker in pursuit of his goals and dreams.”

Golden State General Manager Mike Dunleavy, Jr. says Jackson-Davis has a proven track record based on what he accomplished playing for the Indiana Hoosiers.

“Very productive college player,” says Dunleavy. “We think there’s tremendous value there. He’s been a four-year college player, a proven player, a skilled player, a tough competitor, and most importantly character. He can do a lot of things, such as defend, rebound, finish, and his

“WHEN TRAYCE PLAYS WITH A CHIP ON HIS SHOULDER, HE IS A POSSESSED MONSTER. HIS GAME GOES TO AN ENTIRELY DIFFERENT LEVEL AND HE IS THE BEST PLAYER ON THE COURT, REGARDLESS OF THE LEVEL OF PLAY. HE IS SOMEONE WHO HAS BEEN OVERLOOKED AND UNDERAPPRECIATED HIS ENTIRE LIFE, I THINK THAT JUST ADDS FUEL TO THE FIRE AND ALLOWS HIM TO STAY HUNGRY, STAY MOTIVATED, TO PROVE OTHERS WRONG.”

-ZACH HAHN-

passing really improved over the last year or two in college. A guy that will provide insurance and hopefully be able to grow within our program. What we’re getting as a player and person really put it over the top. Great fit for the Warrior program.”

Dunleavy emphasized how important character is for him and the Golden State franchise when evaluating players. Hahn gives a lot of credit to Jackson-Davis’ family for helping him along the way.

“Your support system is huge when you are highly successful at anything,” says Hahn. “For Trayce, he was fortunate to have a family that pushed him and taught him valuable life lessons. They brought him up with great core values. As I tell our players ‘You are who you hang out with.’ Trayce has surrounded himself with quality people who genuinely care about him and his future.”

Golden State won the NBA world championship in 1947, 1956, 1975, 2015, 2017, 2018, and 2022. The Warriors’ most recent success has been spearheaded on the court by their ‘Big Three’, guard Stephen Curry, guard Klay Thompson, and forward Draymond Green. JacksonDavis says he’s prepared to learn from his new teammates.

“Being a sponge and absorbing all the knowledge the veterans have,” says Jackson-Davis. “They like to play in space and I like to pass the ball and be unselfish. I think it’s going to be a great fit for all of us.”

“Trayce could not have been drafted into a better situation,” says Hahn. “Veterans fill their roster and can help him get acquainted with the NBA lifestyle and the relentless work ethic he has to have to compete daily to have a long successful career.”

Jackson-Davis’ biological father, Dale Davis, played 16 seasons in the NBA which included a short stint with Golden State. Davis had the following advice for his son.

TownePost.com / AUGUST 2023 / CENTER GROVE MAGAZINE / 21

“The biggest thing he told me is to be consistent,” says Jackson-Davis. “Finding a routine and going in every day and working your hardest. That’s going to help you get to where you want to be.”

The NBA Draft experts had projected Jackson-Davis to be selected late in the first round or early in the second round. However, the high school and college All-American slid to the second-tolast spot. He says this provides extra motivation for him.

“I always play with a chip on my shoulder,” says Jackson-Davis. “Even coming out of high school and going to a school like Indiana, a lot of people doubted my abilities. After four years and what I was able to accomplish there, it was above and beyond what everyone thought. This is the next step in my journey and I know I have to work. I believe in my abilities and we’ll let God handle the rest. Watching picks going and going, I just basically said I’m fired up and I’m ready to go, honestly.’’

“When Trayce plays with a chip on his shoulder, he is a possessed monster,” says Hahn. “His game goes to an entirely different level and he is the best player on the court, regardless of the level of play. He is someone who has been overlooked and underappreciated his entire life, I think that just adds fuel to the fire and allows him to stay hungry, stay motivated, to prove others wrong.”

The Warriors value Jackson-Davis so much, they signed him to a four-year contract. Dunleavy, Jr. says he will

be on their 15-player roster when the 2023-24 season tips off. JacksonDavis shares what he can bring to the Warriors.

“My motor. The way I run the floor. The way I bring the ball up the floor,” says Jackson-Davis. “Match-up problems on defense by bringing slower guys out and being able to pass the ball to open shooters, the best shooters in the world.”

His high school coach says he not only has a lot to offer on the court, but he has a lot to offer off the court, too.

“The best attributes about Trayce are his humility and infectious personality,” says Hahn. “He changes the energy level in the room and never has a toocool mentality. He can hold meaningful conversations with fans ranging from third-grade future Trojans to lifelong elderly IU fans. He always puts others first and is first to smile. A special person, a special player. As humble as they come. He deserves all the success in the world.”

When Jackson-Davis has an opportunity to meet his new ‘Big Three’ teammates, he can share with them that his high school coach beat all three of them in college basketball while playing for Butler. The Bulldogs beat Curry at Davidson during the regular season, Green at Michigan State in the NCAA Final 4, and Thompson at Washington State in a regular-season tournament championship game in Hawaii. On the other hand, coming in as a rookie, maybe it would be best to keep this to himself.

Memberships why

There’s an adage that many people live by: “Happy wife, happy life.” There’s another phrase that’s also relatable: “Happy feet, happy mood.” OK, so the maxim may not rhyme, but the sentiment is certainly on the money. If you’ve ever suffered foot or ankle pain, you know how it affects your demeanor. “When your feet are bothering you,

CARROLL FOOT AND ANKLE CLINIC

everything bothers you,” says podiatrist Dr. Michael Carroll. “I hear it all the time. Moods change completely once your feet feel good again.”

A seasoned podiatrist, Carroll deals with anything and everything that has to do with the foot or ankle. He takes care of simple issues like ingrown toenails, warts and wound care, to chronic frustrations like plantar fasciitis, heel pain and ankle pain. His keen surgical skill enables him to fix broken toes, fractures, and problems related to diabetes including limb salvage.

Kevin and Angela Deuth first came to Carroll due to an infection in Kevin’s big toe. Since Kevin is diabetic, he is at greater risk of infection, which can then lead to amputation.

“When we first saw Dr. Carroll the infection had spread, and he was in danger of losing his foot,” says Angela Deuth. “Dr. Carroll was able to save his foot. In addition, he has gone above and beyond in working with our insurance company to make sure he gets the proper medical care he needs.”

Podiatrists from all around the state send patients to Carroll, who is double board certified by the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery in foot surgery as well as Reconstructive Rearfoot/Ankle

Surgery. He considers himself a surgically based podiatrist as he performs many complex reconstruction procedures. He handles most closure procedures with a plastic surgical closure technique, in which the sutures are under the skin. This means that no sutures need to be removed because they simply dissolve. In addition, Carroll does quite a lot of revisional surgery to correct complications that patients encounter from a previous surgery at a different practice.

A doctor with an impeccable bedside manner, Carroll enjoys taking the time to properly explain things to patients so they are not confused about their upcoming procedure. Greg McGraw is a patient of Carroll and has always been pleased with the results.

“My experience with Dr. Mike has been one of the best medical encounters I’ve had in the area,” says McGraw. “He took the time to hand-draw diagrams, reference anatomical models and explain in layman terms the issues I was having. The scheduling process was seamless and X-rays were conducted on the spot. From prosthetic shoe inserts, strains, and my foot surgeries, Dr. Mike and his team are top notch.”

McGraw says that it’s clear that Carroll and his team love their careers and are

passionate about helping patients.

“They are professional and always keep it fun,” says McGraw.

“Dr. Carroll has been not only a great doctor, but also a great friend,” says Deuth. “He treats every patient like family and really listens to all concerns no matter how major or minor.”

As for Carroll, he especially loves his post-op days because he so rarely deals with complications.

“It’s a great day in the office because it’s a lot of, ‘Yeah, that looks great! See you next week!’” he says.

Carroll has a number of professional memberships including the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery, the American Podiatric Medical Association, and the Indiana Podiatric Medical Association. He’s double board certified in Foot Surgery and Reconstructive Rearfoot/Ankle Surgery. In addition, he’s currently the second vice president of the Indiana Podiatric Medical Association.

Originally from Chicago, Carroll practiced in Merrillville and Crown Point, Indiana, before moving to Greenwood in 2008. A longtime Center Grove resident, he’s worked on the southside of Greenwood since 2008, before opting to open his own practice, Carroll Foot and Ankle Clinic, in July of 2023.

“We love the southside and love Center Grove,” says Carroll. He and his wife, Nancy, who does the billing for the practice, raised their three children, Samantha, 26, Ierlynn, 24, and Michael, 20, in Center Grove. They all attended Center Grove High School. Michael, who is currently in nursing school, will be working part time at the practice as a medical assistant. The couple also has a husky, a Labrador and four cats.

“We have a zoo,” says Nancy with a chuckle. “Family is so important to us. We enjoy traveling and bringing our kids with us. We’re a family-oriented business.”

MORE THAN SKIN DEEP

Local Tattoo Artists Help Clients Express Themselves

Although Monte gravitated towards art all his life, he never considered tattooing as a career. Instead, he worked as a professional illustrator/ designer.

“Tattooing wasn’t at the top of my list of choices,” says Monte, “but it is interesting how life can silently guide you in directions you didn’t see as possible.”

Realizing graphic design wasn’t his true passion, Monte began a tattoo apprenticeship in 1997 and emblazoned his first tattoo.

“Becoming a tattoo artist crept up on me,” says Monte. “Honestly, I didn’t see it coming, but once it grabbed hold of me, I’ve never looked back.”

Working countless tattoo trade shows and

being published all over the world, Monte acquired quite the notoriety early in his career and was even awarded ‘Best Tattooist’ by the NTA (National Tattoo Association) in 2001.

He’s now been in the business for 26 years and opened Vault 74 Tattoo in 2019. It’s a hybrid studio as they offer project appointments and accommodate walk-ins as well.

Vault 74 Tattoo currently hosts the works of three additional artists – Jose Flores, Ryan “Sketch” Martin, and Sergio. They are versed in all tattoo styles – traditional, photo realism, line art, and both big and small designs.

Delaney, co-owner of Pink Inkk Collective Tattoo Studio, also showed artistic prowess early on. As a kid she used to take Sharpies to school and draw on her classmates. By her teenage years, her drawings looked quite

realistic and she began to consider pursuing a career as a tattoo artist following high school.

She was given the opportunity to occupy an empty booth and began teaching herself in a professional environment observing and absorbing various techniques and styles of her fellow artists.

Now she co-owns Pink Inkk Collective Tattoo Studio with Zakk Phillips (nicknamed DK for the double K). DK has been in the industry for more than a decade. Delaney specializes in feminine line work, while her co-owner loves doing realism and black-and-gray, fully shaded pieces.

“We’re at opposite ends of the spectrum,” she says. “DK passes dainty and floral to me, and I pass realism to him.”

30 / CENTER GROVE MAGAZINE / AUGUST 2023 / TownePost.com

Before inking a tattoo, Delaney asks to clients fill out a questionnaire, inquiring about budget, tattoo size and placement. She also asks how long they are comfortable sitting, and what they want to achieve.

“An artist needs to be able to draw because not everyone has a Pinterest folder full of references,” she says.

“Someone might say, ‘I want this memorial tattoo. Here are five things that remind me of my mom. Can you create something out of that?’ That’s my favorite part of the job.”

When Monte first started in the industry, there were things called ‘flash racks’ which were laminated cards with various tattoo design ideas. People would look through those and get their ideas. Now clients generally go online and check out an artist’s portfolio to get see the type of work they can do. People then come into a studio with pictures saved on their phones to demonstrate what they want.

Delaney’s client, Ellen Robison, says Delaney changed the way she viewed getting tattooed.

“I was instantly relieved when I walked into the shop and was met with a friendly, supportive, knowledgeable young tattoo artist,” says Robison. “Not only is Delaney a delight to be with, she’s also a skilled tattoo artist who works quickly and helps keep pain to a minimum.”

Stephanie Baker met Monte 20 years ago and was in awe of his talent.

“He had won a ton of awards and his art was beautiful,” says Baker, who has tattoos on her arms, feet, chest, and neck.

“I got a neck tattoo because I never wanted to work somewhere that wouldn’t allow tattoos,” Baker says. “I love that I can look at a tattoo and remember what life was like at the time I got it, remember an event or person that inspired that tattoo, or smile because it was some silly tattoo that I got just because it made me laugh.”

In the past, the word “tattoo” might have inspired thoughts of anchors, skulls and

pinup girls. Now, however, not only is the sky the limit when it comes to tattoo designs, but people are also proud to display and talk about their artwork. Part of this can be credited to reality television shows that highlighted the artistry of tattoos in shows such as InkMaster.

“Years ago, a parent may have pulled their child close while in line at the store if they saw they had a tattoo,” Monte says. “Now, it’s more likely that a child will notice a tat and say, ‘Hey, that looks like yours, mommy!’”

According to Monte, varieties of professionals

have always sought out tattoos, including doctors, lawyers even priests. What is changing, however, is public perception. That extends to workplace rules surrounding the visibility of tattoos.

“IU Health now allows their staff to show their tattoos,” Delaney says. “It’s cool to see nurses coming out of the woodwork, telling me that they have wanted a tat on their forearm and had to wait 25 years to get it.”

Tattoos often generate an emotion or a feeling, and this is often precisely why people want to show them off.

Birth flowers and butterflies are some of the most common designs that clients request.

Crosses, hearts, semicolons, and infinity symbols also top the list. One of the most precious jobs Delaney has taken on is a full chest cover-up for her former school counselor following her double mastectomy.

“That was one of the first big pieces I tackled as an artist and I was so happy she chose me to do it,” Delaney says.

She also does a lot of tats for women who have escaped emotionally or physically abusive relationships.

“They’ll get something to build their confidence,” she says.

“Tattoos share all aspects of our lives,” says Monte. “You figure out the world together

when you spend that amount of time in a chair. Memorial tattoos are always special with a client when they share stories of their loved ones, and fun tattoos for no reason make for an enjoyable experience as well.”

Monte also has some memorable stories of his own, like the time he went to Ozzfest and tattooed two members of the heavy metal band Pantera - late guitarist Dimebag Darrell, and bass player Rex Brown.

“We got the VIP experience, hung out and tattooed them in the green room,” says Monte, who is currently working on a couple of different tattoo body suits, one of which is for a client who’s doing 75% of his body in “Lord of the Ring” images.

“It’s all black and grey,” Monte says. “It’s conceptual photo-realism type design for the way it moves across his body. He lives in Colorado and comes here three to five times a year. I’ve been tattooing this beast for over seven years.”

“In the style that I do most, it’s kind of like a 360 degree painting where the client is the canvas - a piece of paper that talks back to you,” he says.

CGHS BASEBALL AND TRACK AND FIELD TEAMS PUT IN MEMORABLE SEASONS

Writer / Kevin Conrad Photographer / Lindy Scott, Life + Soul / Bill Todd Senior Pitcher Caden Cornett CG Head Coach Keith Hatfield with Drew Culbertson

TRACK AND FIELD

Going out on top is more the exception than the norm. However, since Eric Moore took over as head coach of the Center Grove High School (CGHS) boys track and field program in 2000, the Trojans have been more than just normal. They have been exceptional. Under Moore’s leadership, Center Grove won the state title in 2011, and earned seven regional championships, 18 sectional titles and 23 county trophies.

Moore, 61, announced during the season he would hang up his stopwatch and whistle after the state finals in June. In the final event of the state meet and Moore’s final event as head coach, the Trojans sent him out on top.

“You coach track for almost 40 years and your last event that you coach is the mile relay, the four by four, and you win the state championship,” says Moore. “That’s pretty special.”

Senior Parker Doyle, a member of the mile relay team, sent Moore out with another first-place finish, winning the 300-meter hurdles.

“I love hurdling,” says Moore. “For my senior hurdler [Doyle] to fall in the event he should have won [110-meter hurdles], and then recover and come back and show his true character and toughness and win the state in an event he shouldn’t have. In my last go around as a hurdle coach, I got a hurdle state champion, and my last go around as relay coach, I got a relay champion.”

“When I was told that it was going to be Coach Moore’s last year coaching track, I knew I needed to end that era of his life with a bang,” says Doyle. “Coach Moore has been almost a second father to me. He’s been very tough on me since my sophomore year when I looked like an awkward giraffe running. Coach Moore saw my potential and helped me get as close to it as I possibly could. Without Coach Moore, I can’t see myself

being anywhere close to where I am today.”

Doyle finishes his athletic career at CGHS as one of the most decorated athletes of all time, with five state championships. He not only won two state titles in track this season, but was also a member of Moore’s football state championship teams in the past three seasons. The Indiana State track recruit was also named the 2023 Indiana Mr. Sprinter/ Hurdler.

“Every single state title means so much to me,” says Doyle. “I played a different role in

all of them and it feels good to know my hard work paid off.”

BOYS BASEBALL

Center Grove baseball has had tremendous talent through the years, winning numerous conference, county, sectional and regional titles. However, one thing was missing - a trip to the state championship game. The 2023 Trojans forever changed history with

36 / CENTER GROVE MAGAZINE / AUGUST 2023 / TownePost.com

an incredibly fun-filled ride to their first appearance in the state title game at Victory Field in Indianapolis.

CGHS began the season with an 11-game win streak. Early-season success included one-run wins over Centerville High School in the season opener at Indiana University, and familiar foes Whiteland and Franklin in the county final-four and championship games. The Trojans also had wins over not-so-familiar foes Homestead and Bedford North Lawrence. The hot start put CGHS atop the state polls, where it would stay for the remainder of the season.

CGHS strung together nine straight wins mid season, highlighted by victories in Louisville over Cincinnati Elder, the winningest program in the nation, and the number-one-ranked team in Kentucky, Saint Xavier.

The Trojans ended the regular season with an impressive 24-3 record and were poised to make a deep run in the state tournament.

“We had a lot of new guys step up and throw some great innings for us,” says Keith Hatfield, baseball head coach. “Then we really started executing offensively in the tournament, which was a big reason we made the run we did.”

CGHS defeated Bloomington South and Greenwood to win its 21st sectional. In the Sweet 16, the Trojans topped Columbus North to secure their seventh regional. CGHS won just its second semi-state, and first since 1996, with victories over Brownsburg and Castle.

CGHS didn’t win the top prize, falling to Penn in the 4A state title game 2-0, concluding the season with a 29-4 record.

“I am extremely proud of this team,” says Hatfield. “The seniors and returning varsity guys did a great job with the freshmen and sophomores, leading them and making them feel

welcome. This group definitely left a mark that will be visible for years to come.”

“I’m extremely proud of this team and especially the seniors,” says CGHS junior third baseman Noah Coy. “The run the [senior players] had over the past four years was amazing, and to finally break through to the state championship game was a great way to fulfill all the goals we’ve set as a team and program. We didn’t quite get it done, but hopefully we have kicked the door in for future teams. I think the legacy this team leaves is that hard work, believing in each other and really caring about each other makes a difference.”

The players were not only committed to putting in the time and hard work during the season, but also in the offseason.

“The guys bought in and showed up every day,” says Hatfield. “We had very limited absences because they not only are great workers, but wanted to be around and compete with their teammates. We are fortunate to live in a great community. They come to our program with a great mindset because of their upbringing. It is great to see them work and mature from teenagers to young men. This group definitely achieved that.”

This team had all the ingredients for success.

“The commitment to putting in the work and to the team was huge,” says Coy. “We have great coaching, and on the field I think we had the ability to play all parts of the game with great pitching, great defense, timely hitting and speed. Most of all, I think just really buying into the process and trusting each other - the trust and love we have for each other as friends and teammates carried over to the field. It’s going to be hard seeing these seniors move on, but it’s up to the guys that are coming back to create the same environment.”
