PERSONAL PRESENTATION TOMAS MARIA LOPEZ

BUENOS AIRES, 17 NOVEMBER 1993

At six, I sailed for the first time in Rio de la Plata, Buenos Aires, at YCO (yacht club olivos). Once I moved to Italy in 2003 I continued to sail in Riva del Garda, a town in the north of Lake Garda, at national and international levels as athlete of Fraglia Vela Riva, a nautical club famous for the presence of strong wind, for the large number of regattas organized annually and for its great architectural quality, designed in 1934 by Giancarlo Maroni. Starting from 2012 with the matriculation at the Politecnico di Milano, Mantova Campus, I started working in the same club as a FIV sailing instructor, teaching during summer season at the sailing courses for children (from six to nine years old) and for adults, and coaching in winter the pre-agonistic optimist team. Work has allowed me to finance my studies, but above all to continue to cultivate my passion for sailing and teaching. Mantua is one of the most important Renaissance cities in Italy, where masters such as Leon Battista Alberti and Giulio Romano worked. The academic career at the Politecnico di Milano, in particular in the Campus of Mantua, has allowed me to grow in different ways, giving not only the opportunity to study the works of great architects who have profoundly inspired me like Le Corbusier, Ignazio Gardella and Fernando Tavora , to gain access to unique and highly formative experiences such as international Design workshops and study trips, but above all to develop a personal passion for research and a rational approach to the project. I personally travelled to New York, Helsinki, Buenos Aires, Barcelona, Amsterdam, Porto and Berlin, to study the work of Mies van der Rohe, Alvar Aalto, Coderch, Clorindo Testa, Michel de Klerk, Alvaro Siza, Tavora and Foster. Younger and smaller than Milan, in recent years the Campus of Mantua has had a great cultural boost, hosting MantovaArchitectura, the month dedicated to

architecture, during which internationally renowned architects are hosted in the city, holding public Lectures and simultaneously actively participating to university courses as visiting professors. Among these I had the opportunity to have as professors Eduardo Souto de Moura and Paulo David and attend numerous inspiring lectures held by Goncalo Byrne, Tadao Ando, Elisa Valero Ramos, Juan Navarro Baldeweg, Rafael Moneo and many others. Parallel to my studies I have been the Representative of the students of the Master inside the Institutional board with the aim of having a role in my own accademic formation, and an active member of the student Association ‘Starc’, organizing cultural events for the promotion of collaboration and exchange of ideas between students. Although I’m interested in architecture at different scales, some themes have particularly fascinme. I have always been interested in the subject of the perception of urban security and its relations with the form of the city, especially applied to the recovery of problematic social districts and the conversion and transformation of historical buildings and areas of the city in order to answer to social needs. I developed a triennial thesis on the subject of urban recycling of the last 50 years in Venice, the transformations of ex industrial factories in social housing and public buildings, within a consolidated historical city. I am interested in the investigation of the relationship between architecture for children and pedagogy, the theme of time-varying scale inside the building and its connections with the city. I developed a Master thesis about the transformation of a historical yatch club into a sailing school for children. From May to October 2018 I moved to Granada in order to do a six months internship in the Elisa Valero Ramos Studio.

internship in ELISA VALERO ‘s studio GRANADA, from 14/05/2018 to 31/10/2018

I collaborated in the practice work (architectural and urban planning, urban recicling and efficient housing), lighting design and sustainable projects; Took part to the design development of projects of different scales, from the interior design of forniture, to the design definition of a residence building and a fishmarket Building for the Motril harbour in Granada. Development of 2D drawings, maquettes and 3D virtual models. I adquired competences linked to the studio working timetable, relationship with the coleagues, delivery importance, and also practical skills, like the capacity to develop a preliminary project for a residence building, and its technologic and building details, reciving the following final evaluation from Elisa Valero: “ Tomas Lopez has been working brilliantly. He is a hardworker and he has demostrated great involvement, responsability and the best conditions in teamworking. It has been a very positive experience 29.10.2018

MODELLO

PROJECT AREA MANTOVA

DESIGN TEAM ALBERTO FINOCCHIARO LEONARDO FORMAGGIONI TOMAS MARIA LOPEZ

The project represented the first approach to the study of the themes of the city, of its history as a tool to understand, and of the urban composition. the entire project was developed with a unit module of 50x50, taking as a reference the near “Giardino dei Semplici” garden of Palazzo Ducale,. In this way was posible to organize the different functions of the courtyard, the exposition gallery, the Theatre, inside a complex with a clear proportional relation between the spaces. The project is thought as the final point of a urban path that from Piazza Sordello brings to the theatre.

1:500

PROJECT AREA

PORTO, PORTUGAL

DESIGN TEAM CESARE VARESCO FRANCESCO BOSCHINI EDOARDO LONARDI TOMAS MARIA LOPEZ

The

design studio organized a week in Porto, in which was posible to survey the project area and visit the city. the area is placed on Rua de Miagaia, a characteristic street of Porto that faces on the south the Douro, the significant river that crosses the city. One of the most difficult themes was the relationship of the project with the morphology of the city, that required a complex work in section. The theme of the project was the curve. The double high ground floor was dedicated to the public functions, the hall, the wine bar and the restaurant, while the upper floors host the rooms, duplex and simplex ones.

SOCIAL HOUSING BUILDING LABORATORIO DI COSTRUZIONI prof.SCHIAFFONATI; prof. GAMBARO; prof.ssa MUSSINELLI

PROJECT AREA MANTOVA, ITALIA

DESIGN TEAM ALESSANDRA ISOLAN LAURA MURARI CESARE VARESCO TOMAS MARIA LOPEZ

The theme of the design studio was the Social housing. After the definition of a Masterplan, in the south of the city, a building in particular was studied in detail, with apartments of three different dimensions. During the study of the plans, the attention was dedicated to the economy of the internal paths, and to the orientation of the apartments. These factors determined the structure and the shape of the building. The researches of Ignazio were considered as a project reference, in particular those related to the Mangiagalli neighborhood in Milan.

PRISION TRANSFORMATION LABORATORIO DI PROGETTAZIONE ARCHITETTONICA 3 prof.DIEGO CISI; prof. FILIPPO ORSINI

PROJECT AREA MANTOVA;ITALIA

DESIGN TEAM CESARE VARESCO TOMAS MARIA LOPEZ

The theme of the project was the conversion of the old prision of the city into a residential neighbourghood with public functions. The project was so developed following the strongest element of the old function, the perimetral wall. The concept was the city inside the city. Two different apartament tipologies were developed, one near the wall, the other with the historical wall as an internal element.

FLOATING PAVILLION FOR EXPO 2015 INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP EXPO 2015 prof.EDUARDO SOUTO DE MOURA; prof.ssa BARBARA BOGONI; arch. MARIANA SENDAS

PROJECT AREA MANTOVA

DESIGN TEAM ALBERTO FINOCCHIARO LEONARDO FORMAGGIONI TOMAS MARIA LOPEZ

The theme of the workshop was to develop the design of a floating pavi-

lion to be placed on the lakes of Mantua in order to promote the city’s visit during the Expo. In a group of 15 students, four different solutions were studied. The pavilion in question has a height of less than five meters, so that it can be passed under the bridge of the sangiorgio and thus it is possible to move it on the different shores. Downstairs, on the water level, there is a bar. Upstairs a projection room and a terrace overlooking the Ducal Palace. The project and model were exhibited at Casa del Mantegna.

PROJECT AREA

GOLASECCA, ITALIA

DESIGN TEAM MARCO ZENI CESARE VARESCO TOMAS MARIA LOPEZ

The

area is an urban void in Golasecca, where a rural demonstration park has been provided, giving the opportunity to promote a zero-mile city market. The linear building acts as a compositional backdrop and the park develops on two compositional axes of strong urban design. On the main one, which connects to the school’s path, a revisited Italian garden has been developed. The secondary axis comes from the residential area to the east and closes on a labyrinth studied for the children’s play area. On the roof of the building are solar panels and a system for collecting rainwater

PROJECT AREA MANTOVA, ITALIA

DESIGN TEAM TOMAS MARIA LOPEZ

The project consisted on the renovation of a neighbourghood realized in

the ‘70s that was designed to be an example of “the city of the future”. After a deep analsys about its origins the main problem was individuated on the urban theories that generated it, its unit tipologies distribution based on an aereal street that creates an a-tipical definition of the public spaces. The project consisted on a urban program that tries to connect Lunetta with the city center studyng a new definition of the public spaces, and the proposal to demolish the aereal path and rethink the distribution of the central “L” building,

The design studio consisted on a intensive workshop of tree weeks. The first was in Porto, working in the FAUP university for the survey of the project area. The other two were inside the Mantova Campus, in which was posible to work together with Eduardo Souto De Moura and Paulo David. The project area was a “broken” block inside the historical city of Porto, near one of the most important squares of the city, and placed along a street that connects the area with Douro River. The program was to design a theatre and a Social housing developement. Different tipologies define the three buildings of the complex.

The bulding consists on a functional arm that serves the two conference rooms, one internal, the other open-air, on the roof of the building. the city is thought to be the background of both the theatres.

MULTIFUNCTIONAL CENTER IN MANTOVA DESIGN IN HISTORICAL CONTEXT STUDIO prof. DAVID PALTERER; prof. GIANLUCA VITA; prof. FRAN-

PROJECT AREA MANTOVA, ITALIA

DESIGN TEAM XIAO JUXIA TOMAS MARIA LOPEZ

The project consisted on the design of a multifunctional center as the headquarter of the Festival della Letteratura, in a complex area between the historical center and the modern city of Mantova. The hybridity of the area, in strong contact with the water canal , the historical “Pescherie” designed by Giulio Romano in the Renaissance, the tower of the historical convent that was demolished by the bombing during the second world war, and the programme that required a big quantity of volume to be designed inside a dense area, made the project very complex. A functional arm contains the services of all the different spaces of the building, definig an intentional relationship with the canal. The composition tries to relate wirth the pescherie and the tower.

PROJECT AREA

MANTOVA; ARMERIA PALAZZO DEL CAPITANO

DESIGN TEAM FRANCESCA BNA’ SARA CESCHI CESARE VARESCO TOMAS MARIA LOPEZ

The project consisted in the interior design of an exhibition dedicated to the artist MIMMO PALADINO. Starting by the study of the artist and its artworks, considering the relationship between the horses and the place. In order to define the narrativity of the exhibition, the novel of ORLANDO FURIOSO was chosen because of its interesting themes. In this sense the love DESIRE, and the persuit of Angelica became the theme of the exhibition, in which the horses are the subjects of the different scenes, by changing the context thanks to an architectural element that works on the compression and expansion of the space, and on the relationship between the visitor and the artworks, where the old palace becomes a scenography for the horses.

HISTORY OF CONTEMPORARY ARCHITECTURE 2 prof.ROBERTO DULIO vote: 30

Based on a case study of particular interest in order to understand the history of the contemporary Italian architecture, this work represents a first approach to historical research. The study, abstraction and critical reinterpretation of the elements of classical architecture make the fencing house in this sense an essential project for understanding the Italian debate between the two wars. Through the redrawing of plans, elevations and sections, and the bibliographic research, the events that led to its construction and determined its design choices.

The research was developed during the contemporary history course, as parallel was the colonial story compared to the urban development that concerned Italy during the Fascist period. Through a bibliographic research, the redrawing of some iconic buildings such as the Hotel Leptis magna, we tried to deal with a topic as so influential as little known. The study of the key figure of Piccinato, who worked at the same time in the design team of the E42 and Addis Abeba plans, and Carlo Enrico Rava, who researched a reinterpretation of the traditional architecture of the place, contributed to clarify the issues.

With the aim of publishing a volume about the protagonists of contemporary Catalan architecture, 20 projects realized in Barcellona by local architects have been selected and researched in their architectural features and their relationship with local tradition. Thaks to the redrawing, the bibliographic research, and photographic survey made during the trip to Barcelona, the reasons and the peculiarities of each project have been determined. The Esplanada Forum extends the Avenida Diagonal, allowing people to reach the Sea. Nature and design choices establish close relationships with the Catalan tradition.

The thesis examines the urban regeneration that has involved Venice in the last century and has foreseen, among many interventions, the construction of numerous residential quarters at the margins of the island. Between theese, two districts were analyzed: one by Vittorio Gregotti in Cannaregio and the other by Cino Zucchi in Giudecca. Graduated at the Politecnico, both Bienniale directors, respond to the same problem within the same city, in different historical periods. The thesis explores the ways of relating with the particular historical context, focusing mainly on the management of the urban system adopted and its relationship with the image of the city.

The research was developed with the aim of understanding a particular interpretation of the idea of museum. Mendes Da Rocha conceived the museum for the carriages as an extension of the city inside the building. The capacity of the building to interact with the urban context and solve infrastructural issues, made the research to be extended to the past formation of the brazilian architect in the school of San Paulo, with the assumption of the social factors that deeply characterize the figure of Artigas and his project for the San Paulo University of architecture. The work consisted in the organization of a Universitary Study trip. The main purpose of the trip was to focus on the theme of the “insertion of contemporary architectures in the historical fabric, a theme that has always been central to modern Italian architecture, through on-site analysis of some famous examples. Among the neighborhoods to be visited are the districts of Vittorio Gregotti in Cannaregio, the ones conceived by Gino Valle and Cino Zucchi in Giudecca and the one designed by Alvaro Siza at Campo di Marte, projects realized by architects belonging to different generations, but built in the same city in response to the same theme. In addiction two more recent projects were added: Tadao Ando in Punta della Dogana and OMA in Fondaco dei Tedeschi.Starting from the first ideas for the trip, the historical research about the study cases, to the collection of the necessary founds, the promotion of the initiative with the graphic design of the flyers, the Facebook page and the diffusion of information material, to the management of the collective money for the booking of the bus and ferry, the entrances to the Museum in Punta della Dogana, and the study of the explanations of the case studies.

TABLE ‘TABLA’ FOR THE EX- REFINERY WORKSHOP MAKE A PLACE - AUTOCONSTRUCTION PERSONAL WORK

PROJECT AREA MANTOVA

DESIGN TEAM CESARE VARESCO TOMAS MARIA LOPEZ

The work consisted on the collaboration with R84, a startup that involves a series of professionists (photographers, video makers, artists...) with the aim of recovering and refurbish the ex-refinery IES in Mantova in order to create an “art village”. With the workshop “Make a Place”, my contribution was the design and realization of two furnitures for the new meeting room of the central building of the complex of ex-apartments of the refinery employees. The new elements (table and a bookshelve) had to be located inside a room of an old simmetrical and regular building from the ‘70, and had to be realizable and economic. For this reason, the choice was to introduce two organic elements that clearly declare their modernity. The table is 240x120 meters, thought to host six people and geometrically consistst into an oval composed by two modules of 120x120, where the legs are located at 1/4 of the lenght. The material used is plywood of 1.8 cm, cutted with a numerically controlled maschine.

The library was considered an important element for the room, not only for its functional value, but also for the importance of its role in the definition of the image of the room. The choice was to locate it in the wall next to the entrance door, shaping it according to the direction of the window. From here the idea of working on the sequennce of vertical elements in order to give movement and color to the room. The theme chosen is the cover of the album “Unknown leasures” of the Punk band Joy Division. The library geometrical composition is based on a grid with a module of 35x35cm that is then modelled. The work was helped by the realization of fisical models on different scales in order to verify the visual effect of the library. The material used is plywood of 1.8 cm, cutted with a numerically controlled maschine.

GRAPHIC DESIGN FOR ARTISTIC GYMNASTIC SCHOOL PERSONAL WORK

PROJECT AREA

TENNO, (TN), ITALY

DESIGN TEAM TOMAS MARIA LOPEZ

The work consisted in the collaboration with a new Artistic Gymnastic School for

young girls located in Tenno, for the design and management of the communication aspects of the small Company. In particular the realization of the advertisement flyers, the Facebook page, with the realization of pictures and videos in order to document the activity, and the design of billboards for the public events. The difficulty was the find a graphic that not only would represent the company, but would also create a whole public image of the school in the collective immaginary. The young subjects (60 girls in total from 4 to 12 years old, divided into three categories following the different ages), the colours of the representative clothes of the school and the tools used for the activity, gave the bases the definition of the character of the graphic and the design. In this case, the contrast between a white background and the strong colours of the subject, and the use of geometric composition are the elements used for the definition f the structures of the works. The photographical documentation is instead aimed at showing the group training, the working space of the gym, and the general environment of the school.

Where is the urge to run if you do not know the goal? Why do we study, pass exams and prepare theses? Why, if our future seems to be more and more uncertain, if we young “have no future”? We are not the first to ask these questions, nor are the first to think that abroad can give us the answers we are looking for. When two different cultures meet, coexist and mingle, what turns out can only be positive. Testimony of this phenomenon are the migrations mainly concentrated at the end of the nineteenth century and during the period between the two wars, which saw four million of Italians moving to Argentina in search of a better life. To this extraordinary intercontinental relationship was dedicated the Milano-Buenos Aires exhibition, which was inaugurated in Milan

What are we fighting for today? What does the architecture of our time express and which is our position? On which side are we? 70 years away, Milan’s Museo del Novecento remembers the anniversary of Liberation telling a love story. The exhibition is about Albe and Lica Steiner, architects who have marked the history of Italian graphics, so united in work and life, to be nicknamed “Licalbe” by friends, relatives, colleagues and clients. For the understanding of some of the best works of the period between the two wars, the link between the situation in which the works arise and its content is fundamental.

LE CORBUSIER IN MANTOVA : AND THE CITY ON STILTS Versione n°10 - Rubrica Architettura Contemporanea ( Contemporary architecture Column) October 2016

Since the 1960’s, Venice has begun a process of urban transformation aimed at saving the city from the increasing abandonment of its citizens. Many dismantled industrial areas are transformed into residences and whole new neighborhoods are built in the city’s historic fabric. Vittorio Gregotti first and Cino Zucchi later, will be responsible for the realization of two of these. Built nearly two decades ago by two architects graduated at Politecnico di Milano, both Biennale’s directors, in the same city and in response to the same themes, but in different ways.

Outside the Mantua city Walls, beyond Inferiore Lake, among the poplars that were replacing the old swamp, a group of highly skilled intellectuals, architects and politicians dreamed of building an ideal city. Based on a chessboard, (...) Aerial pedestrian walkways would link the various blocks between them, free from the chaotic traffic that would have circulated on the ground. A large suspended square, surrounded by shops of all kinds, would be built alongside a tall L-shaped building in the center of the district. A rational urban model, fully functional, expandable and replicable, where people could live happily. In 1974, the dream come true and the Lunetta neighborhood is finally built.

In the last few months, Mantua has been the focus of the attention of the most important local and national newspapers because of the construction of a small, partly hypogeal volume in Piazza Sordello, intended to accommodate the remains of the ancient Roman domus mosaics uncovered accidentally in 2006 under the Piazza. The project, entrusted to Politecnico, inaugurated on January 28, had Prof.ssa Luisa Ferro, Architect specialized in archaeological areas, as its scientific director.

On the occasion of the Venice Biennale, the Pavilion of Portugal hosted the exhibition entitled “Neighborhood - Where Álvaro meets Aldo”, a showcase on the works of Alvaro Siza dedicated to popular residential architecture, following its interventions in the four different districts of Porto, Berlin, The Hague and Venice. The latter physically gave place to the Portuguese pavilion, within a wing of the building still under construction. The exhibition thus gained a great value, guaranteeing the opportunity to look at the initial sketches, interviews with residents of the neighborhoods, so that they can actually touch the built building.
