Three-point win for the Tigers

Fierce roars filled the University Amphitheater as the College of Engineering (CEN) Tigers toppled down the five other colleges in the cheerdance competition and won the championship title as their stronger comeback for this year’s University Week, Nov. 14.

“[The preparation] started out

Slithering the platform arrayed in syringes and masks as a symbol of their department, second-year Niecar Acebedo from the College of Allied Medical Health Sciences (CAMHS) clinched the title as the first ever champion of the ‘AmbassaCourse Model’ held at the University Auditorium, Nov. 16.

First-year nursing student Jhanber Gonzales, one of the designers of the CAMHS’ winning costume shared his experiences and inspirations for helping in bringing the costume into reality.

“My passion for designing [drove] me to create the costume, representing the CAMHS department [was] my inspiration,” Gonzales expressed.

Along with Gonzales, allied medical health students Shanly Yanna Granada and Myla Caro planned and made the CAMHS-facade concept costume.

With the help of Acebedo as the

rocky because all of us were busy with exams and other academic requirements but we made sure to [make] use of the little time [that] we have to make our college proud,” third-year Civil Engineering student and participant Benz Matthew Mandid shared.

The CEN has also won the

cheerdance competition for the year 2018 - 2019, during the prepandemic U-Week celebration. Claiming championship after two years of onsite U-Week hiatus has made them claim their grand slam win.

“Our goal this year was to make a grandslam, and fortunately we have

achieved it. As a graduating student, this experience is a memorable one because this is what we will leave as our legacy,” fourth-year BS Civil Engineering student and participant Leo Araña shared.

Furthermore, the cheerdance competition was preceded by the declaration of the University Week 2022 Opening Ceremony message given by University President Rev. Fr. Joel Alve, OAR.

“This is a very special celebration because of two reasons: first, this year is the 60th year of the university as an Agustinian Recollect Institution and second, the U-Week is celebrated in honor of the blessed mother with the title of Nuestra Señora de la Salud whose feast falls on November 17,” Fr. Alve said in his message.

Fr. Alve also shared how grateful he is for the opportunity to celebrate university week after two years of pandemic.

The College of Arts and Sciences finished in second place during the competition, followed by the College of Accountancy, Business, and Computer Studies, College of Allied Medical Health and Sciences, College of Education, and the College of Criminal Justice Education, placing third, fourth, fifth, and sixth, respectively.
