KRONES of Germany premiered a direct printing system for printing on plastic bottles at Interpack in May. Digital direct printing enables users to print on uneven surfaces and container structures which was previously not possible with current labelling technology. With the new DecoType direct printing system, print heights of up to 200mm can be achieved using UV inks. In modularised, compact construction, the machine is suitable for empty plastic containers made of PET, PP or PE.

We’ve lost all access to bag levy funds THE industry has lost all access to the plastic bag levy. During the Buyisa-e-Bag era, the group’s board (which reported to the then Plastics Federation of SA) had access to the levy data and was able to monitor the situation. Since the disbanding of Buyisa, Plastics|SA (which took over from the Federation) however, has not been able to see the statistics on the levies, according to Plastics|SA’s executive director, Anton Hannekom. A small portion is allocated to the Department of Environmental Affairs to do some of the work Buyisa was originally involved in (mainly implemented by the Department of Public Works). In reply to an inquiry, Hanekom said Plastics|SA had tried on numerous occasions to approach the Treasury and DEA to get more information and access the funds for the activities of the industry on the environment, recycling and sustainability, but with no success.

Fraud-busting seminar in UK SUCH has been the level of fear and loathing created by various material fraud incidents in Britain of late that the British Plastics Federation took the unusual step of hosting a seminar on the topic in May. The half-day BPF seminar was titled ‘Combatting Fraud in the Plastics Industry’ and addressed by the BPF president as well as two material suppliers, Plastribution and Matrix Polymers. Plastribution MD Mike Boswell said the UK plastics sector was plastic raw materials is clearly attractive to criminals and, given the ease with which thermoplastics can be reprocessed and the ! are also a matter of risk. The most recent case in Britain involved the theft of an estimated 500 tons of material from a British convertor, Biesterfeld Petroplas. That’s a substantial quantity, to put it mildly. The main gist of the seminar was simple: the logical option for buyers is to work with reputable suppliers. Margins are currently so tight – due to the intense level of competition in the sector as well as high costs incurred in shipping and delivery (not to talk about security) – that your risks are substantially lower than going it solo.
