Neighbourhood House, Community House or Adult Learning Centre, whatever the name, these places are the heart of the Knox community. More recently referred to as Learn Local organisations, we provide social, educational and recreational activities within a welcoming and supportive environment. There are five Learn Local organisations in Knox. Coonara Community House offers a large number of qualifications in Community Services, Children’s Services, Leisure & Health, Disability and Media (TV) up to Diploma level. Funded computer classes run each term. Coonara offers workshops on gardening, cooking and getting ‘back to basics’. Short courses provide pathways to employment and build learner confidence. Other programs include a food garden, a community newspaper and many volunteering opportunities. www.coonarahouse.org.au

Computer skills Computers for the timid

13INTCOM1234 This is a beginner’s class for those who are scared of the computer and may require a supportive environment to develop confidence. 13COMON1234 If surfing the net or emailing your friends leaves you a bit baffled then this is the class for you. Learn how to use your computer to enhance your modern communication skills and have fun as well. 13COMSTE0234 This class is for those who have done ‘Computers for the Timid” or who have basic knowledge of the computer but would like to build on their skills and confidence. This class will still be at a basic level, but the next step on from what you have managed with plenty of support. Beyond the Next Step

13BEYNS0034 This course will introduce you to more advanced file management techniques as well as Excel, Word and Publisher software. 13DIGLIT1234 This course investigates different types of social media and gadgets you would like to explore and ways to improve your knowledge of new technologies. This course includes Facebook, Twitter, iPads /Tablets, Pinterest, Blogging, LinkedIn and participant’s choice. Career planning for life –

These have been developed to provide pathways into employment or further training.

13PLAFUT0204 Coonara’s Careers counselor, Debbie Whitehead,, will lead you in identifying potential career options including training and skill building to achieve your career objectives. Prepare a personal career action plan including a resume, applications for training entry or RPL. Thursdays 12.45pm - 3.00pm 25th July - 5th September $20 tuition & $20 amenities ($10 concession)

Hobby & Recreation courses Energy Healing Workshop

This workshop is for anyone who wishes to learn how to be free from mental and emotional turmoil and stress. Did you know that within our own energy field there are keys to bring about excellent physical, emotional and mental health, as well as the power to create happiness and success in all areas of lives? Mandala magic in a day with Karen Scott

Treat yourself to some creativity and time just for ‘you’. The process of engaging creatively in art-making supports changes in our inner world which helps us to develop a more integrated sense of self, with increased self awareness, confidence and acceptance. The ‘Mandala’ is an ancient and fascinating art form in a circle that is used to express the human experience. These interesting symbolic pictures give us a sense of wellbeing - relaxing and connecting us with our ‘self’. Saturday 9.00am - 5.00pm 31st August Cost $110 per person All materials supplied. Gel print making workshop

Easy cheap meals

Learn how to make delicious, nutritious, easy and cheap meals from minimal ingredients in your pantry. Create meals that you will be able to easily adapt to your own kitchen at home while keeping within a tight budget. Masterchef for kids

If you are 8-12 years old and have always wanted to learn to cook, this class is for you. Create yummy simple meals, slices and snacks that you can eat or take home on the day and learn the skills to be able to cook independently. Thursdays 4.00pm - 6.00pm 29th August - 19th September $70 including ingredients

Pete the Permie workshops Pete the Permie classes

These classes are held at Pete’s Monbulk property - Telopea Mountain Permaculture & Nursery. Check out his website www.petethepermie.com

Cheese making at home - Level 1 Feta, Mascarpone & Greek Style Yogurt Take home your own 3 products with you and make and eat Ricotta on the day as well. This will be a full day course and cheese can be made using Cow, Goat or Sheep’s milk if you wish to bring your own, this will need to be pasteurized on the day. Otherwise all ingredients are all supplied. Please bring lunch to share. Call Coonara for a list of containers to store and transport your products. Thursday 9.00am - 4.00pm 12th Sept Cost $100

Cider, Perry & Fruit wine making workshop

Explore different methods of making Apple cider and the very popular Perry- Pear cider also apple cider vinegar. Discover cider varieties of apple or pear and how can you use what you have at home on your trees and will also look at ways to turn any kind of your excess fruit into a dessert wine. Community activities House membership 2013

Only $20 per year. Members receive discounts on recreational courses and childcare fees as well as free events several times a year.

Gully gardeners

This group meets at Coonara Community House the first Thursday of the month from 2.00pm – 3.30pm. Coming up in term 3: July - all you need to know about poisonous plants in the garden August - Seed saving for our future September - harvest and cuttings swap session.

Training senior volunteers for our community

Coonara has been funded under the Productive Ageing through community education project to provide free accredited training for people aged 60 years plus to increase their skills as volunteers in the aged care, disability and community sectors. Those interested should register for the free information session on Monday July 29th 1.30pm.

Book group

The Coonara book group meets on the third Sunday of the month, from 9.30 - 11.30am, for a late breakfast at a local cafe to discuss books chosen by the members. Please phone or email to let us know you are coming and to get the list of books for reading. No membership fee.

Friday night social

The Knox Houses offer a monthly Friday night free social event on the third Friday of the month in rotation. The term 3 Coonara event is a soup and board games night on July 18th 6.30 – 8.30pm Please ring and let us know you’re coming (97587081)

Coonara Community House is a Registered Training Organisation (no. 3733) approved to deliver training in the following Nationally Recognised Qualifications:

Individual sessions of 30 minutes available free of charge for enrolled Coonara students. $50 per session for members of the public. Please phone for a booking.

Government funds The Victorian Training Guarantee provides all eligible Victorian citizens or permanent residents with subsidised fees. To be eligible you must be upskilling - enrolling in a qualification at a higher level than any other completed qualifications that you hold. Students under 20 years of age are exempted.
