How To Style Your Marri Dining Table

Marri timber furniture is becoming an increasingly popular choice in the fine timber furniture market. This stunning timber was once overlooked as a structural timber due to the prevalence of gum lines, which when left in a raw unfilled state can undermine the strength of the timber. When filled with clear or dark resin and polished to a high finish the gum lines bring a beautiful divergence to the rich golden tones of the timber, creating a spectacle not commonly seen in timbers used for furniture making. As an additional advantage, the resin provides superior strength, resulting a timber that is stronger and more durable than a piece that does not exhibit any gum lines. As a fine furniture craftsman, I feel truly fortunate to have the opportunity to work with this beautiful timber which has allowed me to create some magnificent furniture pieces. Without doubt the best furniture piece to display the beauty of marri timber is a dining table, where the large surface displays the contrast between the timber and the gum veins in all its glory. A well-crafted marri dining table is an art piece in its own right.

I am often asked for advice on how to style a marri dining table in a way that complements the piece without overwhelming it. In my opinion, this unique timber should shine at centre stage, and the table decoration should take second place - adding to the beauty of the table without dominating it. The rich feature of marri timber calls for a minimalistic style of table decoration that creates a balance. This means that multi coloured bouquets of flowers are out, and more natural tones or a selection of just one of two flower colours are in. Always use live floral arrangements where possible. A creative arrangement of branches and green foliage is an inexpensive alternative to flowers which looks fantastic and can last a few weeks when given a little attention. A live potted plant almost looks after itself and adds wonderful warmth to the room. A rotation of two or three potted plants will keep them healthy and happy, even in a dining room that isn’t in an ideal location for a pot plant. Concrete or metal pots provide wonderful contrast between the greenery and the timber table and lets you get creative with designs. A round bowl of succulents with some river stones looks fantastic, especially on a round table where the symmetry of the decoration complements the table shape. Likewise, a rectangle shaped dining table lends itself to use of table runner that compliments the honey tones of the timber and creates a canvas for a display of chunky candles and small succulents in glass pots or tumblers. Not wanting to detract from the beauty of the timber feature, the best decoration for a marri dining table is simple and minimalistic with a nod toward nature.
