Panthers hoping for No. 1 goal Perry’s Altimore focuses on state appearances By Bill Snier GateHouse Media Ohio

PERRY TWP. When Joe Altimore III talks about bowling, he uses words like execution over style, buying in, tempo and percentages. His speech patterns are deliberate, thoughtful, methodical. They match his style as a participant and coach of the Perry High School girls bowling team. Since the 2011-12 season when the 48-year-old Perry Township resident joined the program as an assistant coach, the Panthers have qualified for the state tournament six times in eight seasons — twice before the OHSAA split the sport into two divisions in 2014. Since Altimore took over as head coach during the 2013-14 season, Perry has reached state four times, with a high finish of sixth a year ago. The Panthers will make their third straight state appearance Friday at Wayne Webb’s Columbus Bowl in Columbus. “I want to win a state championship. That is our No. 1 goal every year,” said Altimore, whose team also captured the Federal Division championship in the Stark County Conference this season. “If we win the Federal League, that’s wonderful. But that’s not our goal.” Massillon girls coach Jon Mazur, who took Jackson to four straight state appearances, has a different perspective while watching Perry practice as AMF Hall of Fame Lanes. “You see their numbers SEE PANTHERS, B4

The wrestling postseason does not provide for a chance to appreciate the accomplishments of the tournament mostrecently completed. Not when there’s another tournament waiting just a few days away. For every wrestler in Ohio, the goal is to get to the state tournament. For 35 wrestlers from the Stark County area, that was achieved by what they did on Saturday at their respective district tournaments. By Sunday morning, though, the district might as well have been months ago in the wrestlers’ minds. For them, all things were focused on getting them prepared for what lies ahead when the first whistle blows Thursday inside Ohio State University’s Value City Arena. “We’re going to start today,” Louisville coach Rocky Laughlin said Sunday morning. “We’re going to work out at 12 and watch some film and talk. The draws came out this morning and, especially for a couple of them, there’s just lots of good kids out there. Just because you placed the year before does not mean you’re going to place this year.” Laughlin’s Leopards lead the way for the area with a schoolrecord six qualifiers SEE STATE, B3

NORTH CANTON Improbable. Unlikely. Ultimately immaterial. For the second time in less than a week, the Perry Panthers boys basketball team proved undeniable. Perry senior guard Julian Jackson put the cherry on top of a secondhalf rally when he made a layup as time expired off a bounce pass from Jagger Haynes on an inbounds play to give the Panthers a 52-50 victory over host Hoover in a Canton Division I sectional final game on Sunday. It was the secondstraight tournament game that Perry won at the buzzer after Haynes lifted Perry to a 61-59 victory over Barberton with a layup last Wednesday. “I was nervous when I started driving toward the hoop,” Jackson said. “I really thought that someone was going to come from behind and try to block it. No one ever came. I wanted to jump through the roof when I saw it go in.” Jackson had 14 points for Perry. Haynes led the Panthers with 23 points and was the key to the final play working. Haynes scored 19 points in the second half to help overcome an 11-point third quarter deficit. Hoover was determined to stop him on the inbounds pass with 2.2 seconds to go with the score tied at 50. “Jagger made a nice cut to get the ball and then made a nice bounce pass to get the ball to Julian wide open,” Perry head coach Chad Spurgeon said. “I didn’t think Julian was going to miss that shot. That kid has ice water in his veins. It was just good players making good plays.” Haynes made his presence felt early and often in the second half. He willed the Panthers back into the game by scoring 14 of Perry’s 21 third quarter points. Haynes was limited to just four points the entire SEE PERRY, B4

CAVALIERS REPORT Clarkson, Love lead Cavaliers past Magic Jordan Clarkson scored 18 points, Kevin Love had 16 points and 14 rebounds, and the Cleveland Cavaliers pulled away in the fourth quarter to beat the Orlando Magic 107-93 on Sunday night. Nikola Vucevic scored 28 points for Orlando, which was coming off wins over Golden State and Indiana. He was 13 of 16 from the field and had 13 rebounds. D.J. Augustin added 19 points for the Magic, who hold a very slim lead over Charlotte and Miami for first place in the Southeast

of our defense,” said Geiser, who scored 14 points. “We started closing in on the gaps, boxing out, getting to the helpside ... that’s how we were able to dominate. “I think we know that we can’t control the offensive end, but we can control what we do on defense.” That message was sent loud-and-clear and was more than enough to earn the Bulldogs (20-5) another berth to the regional semifinal at Perry High School, where they will take on Berlin Center Western Reserve this Thursday at 6:15 p.m. After what was a modest four-point lead heading into the second quarter, Dalton was more than locked-on on the defense end, taking away just about anything that the Wizards (18-7) wanted to do.

during Cleveland’s gameclinching run. Rookie guard Collin Sexton had 17 points and Osman scored 14 for the Cavaliers, who have won five of eight. Larry Nance Jr. and Matthew Dellavedova each added 11 points. Cleveland scored 17 straight points during a run that began late in the third quarter with Orlando leading 72-63. The Magic tied the game on Augustin’s 3-pointer midway through the fourth. Vucevic scored 10 points in the third when the Magic pulled ahead after trailing by four points at halftime.

shot put. Area state runnersup were Lake’s Nathan Moore in the Division I boys 1,600 (4:20.95), Carrollton’s Alivia Bentley in the Division I

girls shot put (43-6.50), Salem’s Hunter Christopher in the Division II-III boys 3,200 (9:29.88) and East Canton’s boys 3,200 relay in Division II-III (8:15.81).

How good were the Bulldogs? After breaking the game open with a 13-1 run midway through the first half and pushing its lead out to as much as 18 in the second, Dalton’s defense limited East Canton to just seven field goal attempts for the next 14-and-a-half minutes of play until 3:20 left in regulation. When the Bulldogs went up by 25 midway through the third, the Wizards had just 16 points and 19 turnovers. Simply put, the manto-man defense was more than locked in. “We knew that they liked to attack, attack, attack, so our biggest thing was to force them out of the paint and make them shoot it from the outside,” Dalton coach Katie Miller said. “The kids, after that first quarter, stuck to the plan and saw that was exactly what they were going to try and do and did a great

job.” Cannon set the tone early with her scoring, netting 10 of her gamehigh 18 in the opening quarter, but was a steady threat throughout in just about every statistical category, which included three assists and an impressive six steals. The senior would finish the night 7-of-10 from the floor, three of those baskets off of steals where the forward took it coast-to-coast. “Our energy coming out was so strong,” Cannon said. “Before every game, we’re always ready to play and our on the same page. I love the way that our team builds each other up before every game. It always gets me excited. ““It’s so amazing to have this opportunity again (getting back to regionals). I love these girls so much and just to be able to play with them another game is just amazing.”

competing in the Division II tournament. That total is one more than the five both Carrollton in Division II and Tuslaw in Division III have bound for Columbus. Carrollton is the only area team with multiple wrestlers heading into the tournament on the heels of winning district championships, as both Ben Pasiuk and Brandon Daniels won titles. Three others from the area — Lake heavyweight Michael Mather, Louisville 120-pounder Garett Lautzenheiser and Manchester 126-pounder Zach Larue — also go into the state tournament as a No. 1 seed courtesy of their district title. The other 30 qualifiers are all entering the tournament likely with a little extra motivation on the heels of a district tournament which didn’t end exactly the way they wanted. That’s part of the preparation week as well, though. “The (district) finals didn’t go as well as was expected,” Tuslaw coach Chase Horvath said. “At all. But, they’re there.

You just have to qualify for state, and then anything can happen.” What is working for those large state contingents like what Laughlin or Horvath have is previous state experience. Both the Leopards (Garett Lautzenheiser, Davin Rhoads, Jax Leonard, Blake Robbins) and Mustangs (Brier Marthey, Brennan Shirley, Kyle Ryder, Jake Loar) have four previous qualifiers among their contingents, while the Warriors’ Pasiuk, Daniels and Alex Carrothers also have been to state previously. Such experience isn’t just limited to those three teams. Of the seven area Division I qualifiers alone, five — Perry’s Darese Sparkman and Max Millin; Lake’s Mather; Green’s Caleb Green; and McKinley’s Micha Clemson — are state veterans. That trickles down to the other two divisions as well. Only four of the 14 area schools represented at state are going into the tournament without a returning state qualifier. “It’s been a long time since we didn’t have a kid who was a returning state qualifier,” Horvath said. “We’ve always

had experienced kids to lead the way and set the example and explain the expectations that are around. ... The kids have to go down there and wrestle. It’s the state tournament. Anyone can win it, they just have to be ready to wrestle.” That previous experience is nice to have, especially on the first day of the tournament. Every previous qualifier admits there’s something different about the state tournament, which is what makes each wrestlers’ approach to preparation this week all the more important. That’s why wrestlers like Mather figure to play a big role for their stateinexperienced teammates this week. And why wrestlers like him will have their own special bits of advice. “Well, first thing is, don’t look up when you walk out of the tunnel,” Mather said. “The second thing is, enjoy. You came all this way, might as well enjoy it.” Which is something that, once this weekend is over, a wrestler will finally have some to time to do. Mitchell closed with a 3-under 67 to finish at 9-under 271 at PGA National, a stroke ahead of Brooks Koepka and Rickie Fowler. “I was trying to focus on what was going on,” Mitchell said. “My mind started wandering there a little bit at the end ... and then I hit a great putt.” Mitchell was tied for the lead after 36 holes, and was tied for second going into Sunday. He birdied four of his final seven holes for his first win as a pro — including stints on the Web.com and Latinoamerica tours. All he had to do for that victory was hold off two of the game’s best in Koepka and Fowler. Koepka shot a 66, and Fowler a 67. They both birdied the 18th, and Fowler had a huge charge late to get to 8 under — with three birdies in his final four holes, including a 45-footer on the 17th. But Mitchell didn’t waver in the wind. He was on the upslope of a fairway bunker about 205 yards from the pin for his second shot at the par-5 18th. All he could do from there was hit a pop-up, leaving him with a wedge in for his third. That checked up about 15 feet below the hole, giving him a putt to win. He made it, pumped his fist and waited for the final group of Wyndham Clark and Vijay Singh to finish about five minutes later. Mitchell earned

$1,224,000. Ryan Palmer (63) and Lucas Glover (66) tied for fourth at 7 under. And for a while, it looked like Palmer might steal the tournament. Palmer was tied for 48th after the opening round, tied for 51st after 36 holes and tied for 39th when the final round began. But he started with four straight birdies on the way to going out in 29 — the first player to ever do that in a final round at the Honda. He rolled in a 25-footer from just off the green for birdie at the par-4 16th, then stuck his tee shot to 6 feet and made birdie at the par-3 17th. When he finished at 2:32 p.m., he was two shots back and the final group was on the fifth hole. About two hours later, he was in the outright lead. Not long after that, he was in a six-way tie atop the leaderboard. And his chance lasted until 5:07 p.m., when Koepka tapped in for birdie on the last and the clubhouse lead at 8 under. Palmer made par on the par-5 18th, and lamented afterward that it would be costly. Turns out, he needed 9 under anyway. And with the wind blowing harder than it had at PGA National all week —flags fully extended off poles in the breezes, palm fronds bending as well— the finish was obviously going to be wild. Singh, the 56-year-old who was bidding to become the oldest winner of a PGA Tour event ever —Sam Snead was 52 when he won the 1965 Greater Greensboro Open— was right there until the end. Singh, who hasn’t won on this tour since 2008, settled for outright sixth after a

final-round 70. He had a birdie putt for a share of the lead on the par-3 15th, leaving a 25-footer well short. Clark, the third-round leader, was two shots clear of everybody when he made an uphill putt from just right of the green on the par-4 4th, that birdie making him 9 under. But he made bogeys on four of his next eight holes, falling off the pace.

Logano holds off Keselowski in Vegas Joey Logano has held off teammate Brad Keselowski to win a clean, exciting NASCAR Cup Series race in Las Vegas. Logano drove his Team Penske Ford to his 22nd career victory and his first of the season, narrowly answering Keselowski’s last-lap passing attempt down the stretch. Logano had never won a Cup race in Vegas in 11 tries during his first 10 full-time seasons, although he won an Xfinity Series race here in 2017. Kyle Busch finished third, unable to recover from a mid-race speeding penalty in the hometown driver’s quest for the third threerace weekend sweep in NASCAR history. Pole-sitter Kevin Harvick was fourth, and Kurt Busch finished fifth for the Las Vegas native’s first top-five finish at his home track since 2005. The first race under NASCAR’s full new rules package produced a caution-free event with some exciting action up front, including a couple of wild restarts after the two segments.
