The Nation’s Nursing Shortage Nursing care in America’s hospitals recently experienced extraordinary shortages, perhaps the worst in 50 years. Research indicates that these fluctuating shortages will remain a part of the healthcare landscape for years to come. By the year 2015, it is anticipated that all 50 states will experience a shortage of nurses to varying degrees. Here are some facts to consider: • Enrollment in schools of nursing is not growing fast enough to meet the projected demand for nurses over the next ten years; • A shortage of nursing school faculty is playing a role in restricting nursing program enrollments; • Nearly 60% of the today’s RN workforce is over 40 years old; • The total population of registered nurses is growing at a slow rate; • Current economic climate will limit nursing school applications, enrolments and graduations; • Caring for an aging population will demand more skilled nurses.

The nursing profession and the Foundation of the National Student Nurses’ Association (FNSNA) currently face two serious challenges: a progressive nursing shortage and limited funds to support nursing education. As the only organization with a singular mission of scholarship and leadership for student nurses, NSNA® and Diane Mancino FNSNA are completely committed to their education and development through scholarships and grants. Our goal is to establish a $ 5 million endowed scholarship fund that will ensure our mission—and financial support for students nurses—in perpetuity. Diane Mancino Executive Director of NSNA® and FNSNA FNSNA is the banner carrier for student nurses, the only organization completely committed to their education and development through scholarship.

Our Campaign We are committed to a long-term process to ensure that those who want to become registered nurses have the opportunity, and we are motivated by our mission to ensure high quality health care for generations to come. The Foundation needs to increase the amount of scholarships available and needs to ensure that the necessary scholarships dollars are available annually and are not dependent on the budgets and funding fluctuations of contributors. To achieve this goal, the Foundation seeks to double the amount of scholarships available for undergraduate nursing nurses by enhancing its endowment by $4 million, bringing the total from $1,000,000 to $5,000,000, through Forever Nursing: the Endowment Campaign for FNSNA. We invite you to join with those who have already partnered with FNSNA in establishing scholarship funds that will prominently display their name and provide scholarship opportunities for undergraduate student nurses in perpetuity. Named Scholarship Endowment Opportunities The following Scholarship Endowment Funds will create multiple scholarships for nursing students. Opportunities for donors include: • Naming the overall Scholarship Endowment Fund • Naming a scholarship program that will be directed to a specific area of the nursing profession • Underwriting a full or partial Scholarship Fund • Making a contribution for direct support of scholarships over a five-year period The income from these endowed gifts, as well as the direct support, will provide scholarships to qualified student nurses ensuring there will always be funds available to support their educational goals. Limited Scholarship Funds FNSNA is the banner carrier for student nurses, the only organization completely committed to their education and development through scholarship. Cumulatively, FNSNA has awarded $2.7 million through its General Scholarship Program. However, resources are far from boundless, and hundreds of qualified applicants are turned away each year due to limited scholarship dollars. “I am so grateful for the opportunity to make my nursing education possible. I come from a big family; my father is disabled and my mother works as a medical assistant so this support is going to make a big difference in my ability to complete nursing school. I have wanted to be a nurse since I was a little girl, because I love to help people and I want to serve our community. I believe that I can make a difference between life and death, comfort and pain, knowledge and fear. That is a powerful feeling.” — Scholarship Recipient
