corunna union school Corunna Union School (Shiawassee Street School) By Michelle Schwab In 1842, the city of Corunna was founded by Andrew Mack and fellow members of the Shiawassee County Seat Company. He named the city after Corunna, Spain, a place he liked to visit to purchase sheep. The Corunna School District was formed soon after, and by year’s end the original Corunna Union School was constructed. The one story framed school house was run by only one teacher, Miss Cook. Miss Cook was paid a very generous $2.50/week for her duties. The population of Corunna grew so quickly that in 1851, a larger, 2 story brick building was necessary to house the children of the community. This was a little short sighted, however, as a second building had to be added next door in 1866 to accommodate the growth in the district. This building was 3 stories tall and also made of resilient brick. Unfortunately, disaster struck in 1882 and both buildings were burned down to the ground. The community rallied together and built yet another 3 story brick building to house kindergarten through 12th grade students. On April 14th, 1908, fire once again claimed the Corunna Union School and left behind only a shell of the former structure. The district used insurance proceeds and a community bond to rebuild the school. Designer Edwyn Bowd of Lansing partnered with construction company Rickman & Son to build the $31,000 investment. The new school featured a bell in the cupola that was cast in 1882 and donated by the Corunna Presbyterian Church. The building housed elementary children from 1952 – 1976, followed by Community Education and school administration offices. In 2014, the Corunna School Board closed the Corunna Union School/ Shiawassee Street School for good. Deemed unsafe by the fire marshal, the building would require over $4 million in repairs to bring the building to code. With declining enrollment and outlying schools such as Nellie Reed Elementary in Vernon that were not filled to capacity, the decision was an easy one. The district has since gone through a restructuring that not only vacated the Shiawassee Street School but also optimized existing buildings.

The big question remained: What to do with this large, empty building in the center of Corunna’s downtown district?? To offer a little perspective, the population of Corunna in 2015 had grown to 3,415 people. However, 23.5% were at or below the poverty level. The median household income was only $34,566. Income based housing that was handicap accessible and senior citizen friendly was hard to come by, and typically required a lengthy wait for availability. The City of Corunna was desperate to address these needs and provide a solution to the community while utilizing the vacant building. The Woda Group, Inc. of Westerville, Ohio, was able to provide that solution. Nationally recognized for providing affordable, quality housing for multi-family apartments, senior communities and single-family homes in rural, suburban and urban settings across 13 states, the company fit the bill. Their vision to retain the school house feel while building a massive addition to mirror the existing building was the answer to community concerns about taking away from the history of the building and town. Shiawassee Economic Development Partnership President Justin Horvath considers the new development, Cavalier Greene, to be “an all around win” for the community. He states that, “it will have a tremendous impact on the community. Not only will it reutilize a vacant building, but will also bring a lot of new residents and income into the community who will be spending money locally in downtown stores.” In addition to creating a high-quality housing option for residents in need, the $10 million project has provided new jobs to many in the construction trade. The 40 apartment project is slated for completion this fall and will offer both 1 and 2 bedroom options with many amenities. The City of Corunna, The Woda Group, Inc., and Corunna Public Schools have done a phenomenal job addressing the needs of the community while maintaining the small town, historic feel of the original Corunna Union/Shiawassee Street School. This is just one more reason that it is Great To Be Gold!!

girls cross country

(Courtesy Photo) By Coach Beldyga The week of August 14th, eight of our girls attended the week-long team camp at the North Higgins Lake State Campground. The camp was highlighted by multiple runs every day, including a timed campground mile, a phenomenal interval workout, recovery runs along trails, and a flashlight relay race on Thursday night. Being my first XC camp, I was BLOWN AWAY by the level of coordination, organization, and work that goes into the week! Michelle Trowbridge, Jodi Feldpausch, Diane Jacobs, Jennifer Strauch, Natalie Mesh, Coach Brown, and Coach Heid did a wonderful job making the week a smashing success! Several girls broke into the Top 30 list for many of our daily runs, including- Evie Wright- the new #1 all time in the Ringle-Swift CT Run (closest to predicated time without using a watch), Kate Feldpausch the new #21 all time in the Darling Camp-

ground Mile and new #15 in the Jacobs Interval Workout, Lilly Evans the new #9 in the Ryan CT prediction run, Abigail Fults the new #21 in the Whitchurch CT Run, and Ila Tuller the new #18 in the Whitchurch CT Run. There were many more records broken throughout the week! Four girls earned the title of MILEAGE MANIAC for posting 57 or more miles of running in the 6 day period- Kate Feldpausch (64), Lilly Evans (61), Evie Wright (59), and Lexi Bukovick (57)!!! The real highlight of the week wasn’t all the miles put in by the girls, it wasn’t the fact that we had several girls annihilate the interval workout, it wasn’t even that I ran a solid leg of the flashlight relay- the true highlight was that the girls got to spend some time with one another, learn about each other’s strengths and weaknesses, and grow as a team!

They are excited to work within McCurdy Park and plan to donate a percentage of their ticket sales directly to improve McCurdy! Another positive for The Garage of Terror, the waiting area will be inside this year and they can now accommodate possible harsh weather, no more mud or getting wet. This year’s haunt will be amazing, filled with scares around every corner. Much like at their former Garage of Terror location, they will feature popular scare rooms like the autopsy area and full kitchen! There are some scaretastic new areas as well that you need to experience for yourself. Don’t forget the new black out maze at the end! For those who are too afraid to take the plunge, you are welcome to partake in their indoor concession area, where you can grab some nachos, chips, cotton candy, etc. while waiting for your thrill seeking friends.

Athletes of the Month Presented by Dr. Steven E. Hollister D.D.S. - P.C. Gilby Lentz

Our Athlete of the Month has starred in a variety of sports in his four years at Corunna High. He ran cross country as a freshman & sophomore and has been on the varsity soccer team the past two seasons (team captain both years). Gilby was a stand-out swimmer on the Corunna Varsity swim team last year specializing in the freestyle and breaststroke. He plans on swimming again for the Corunna swim team this winter. Gilby ran for the Corunna Track & Field Team the past three seasons. Lentz has been a varsity letter winner in every sport he has participated in throughout his four years of high school. In soccer, Gilby plays the position of forward and is having an extremely successful senior year. As of press time Gilby currently has 16 goals and several assists this season. He has had two hat trick games and another with five goals as well as several games scoring twice. He has enjoyed watching his Cavalier team grow and mature this season. Gilby also plays on the soccer club team Chill SBC based out of Lansing during the winter and spring. He received the midfielder of the year award for Corunna in 2016. Our Athlete of the Month lives with his parents, Robyn and Bill Lentz (both teachers). He has an older sister, Hannah, who recently graduated from GVSU and a younger sister, Mia, who is 9. He loves spending time in Beulah, Michigan at

his grandparents property and going to Florida each winter to visit the ocean. He has two dogs at home, Bernie - an Alaskan Malamute and Junior - a beagle basset mix. He also enjoys tinkering with old cars. Gilby was recently honored by his fellow students as they voted him onto Corunna’s homecoming court . Gilby started playing soccer through the YMCA when he was eight years old and then played for The Owosso Soccer Club too as he got older. He wants to continue to play soccer in college while pursuing a degree in mechanical or electrical engineering.

She also plays 17-U club volleyball for Five1 Athletics (which was ranked among the nation’s best last year) during the winter and spring. Thayer’s athletic prowess extends into the track & field arena for Corunna where she has earned all-conference honors the past two years. Her top events are the 300 hurdles and as a member of the 4 x 200 relay team. Rylee’s leadership serves her well as a team captain for the track & field team. She has been active at the Shiawassee County fair by showing horses competitively for many years along with showing livestock. Rylee’s parents, Rob & Lory Thayer along with her siblings, Jack Thayer (also a senior at Corunna) & Tyler Thayer (a senior a Hope College) are very proud of Rylee and how hard she works to excel in her academics, sports and extracurricular activities. Rylee plans to attend college and pursue her volleyball career at the next level. She is undecided as of now on a particular major, but is leaning toward going into the medical field. Good luck and be safe as are probably the most frequently hunted game species. As we get you enjoy the great outdoors and all it has to offer! ready for the hunting season, there are multiple things we can do in preparing our hunting clothing and related gear to put success in our favor. In this article, I will share a few tips that many of you may already know, but hopefully may help some and give new ideas to others. One big issue related to deer hunting involves not alarming deer with their detection of an unnatural scent. This scent may be our own human scent or household related scents that are contained on our hunting clothes and gear. Several ways to eliminate or cover these unnatural scents are available. Often the approach involves starting off with using commercial unscented body soap and laundry soap for clothing, prior to the hunt. Many also use scent elimination spray on clothing and gear. There are also commercial scent covers that can be applied to clothing, dragged on a rag to your hunting stand and placed near your stand while you are hunting. Another option may be to use natural scent covers. By using a plastic container, make a number of small holes in the sides. Add crushed leaves, plants, acorns, twigs, dirt from your hunting area. Place this small container in a plastic tub with your hunting clothing, which has previously been washed with unscented detergent baking soda

baseball field upgrades By Amy Golombisky As I walked across the outfield Friday night after the homecoming football game, I was able to admire the newly resurfaced baseball infield. The orange tape that warns passers-by to avoid the infield area framed it like a party streamer as it flickered and twisted in the unusually warm autumn wind. The old infield had a few serious concerns that were disguised by the pristine appearance. Over six decades the faculty, staff, coaches, athletes, and caring community members had maintained the stately gem impeccably, but simple wear and tear created an uneven and unsafe playing area. It’s common to see coaches, athletes and often times community members and fans pitch in at a game helping rake the infield or police the area for litter. Such love for our facility has made it possible for other amenities to be added as well. For example, the outfield fence and the press box/concession stand behind the backstop. These upgrades raise the status of our field by creating an area for college scouts and press coverage to avoid the social noise of the game. However, the infield renovation was more than an upgrade.

The Corunna Athletic Club allocated $33,000 to this particular project that removed between 8 to10 inches of infield in order to make it level. The mound has been completely rebuilt and the posts that anchor each base have been replaced. The new surface reaches 10ft past where the old infield was and there’s a brand new home plate. It’s the intensely focused efforts of the C.A.C. that have helped provide Corunna athletes the privilege of playing on such an impressive and dignified infield. Admittedly, we are blessed with the undying support of our Corunna community, but it is only through the combined efforts of all who are able that such honorable endeavors are accomplished. Please join us by volunteering for your next favorite home event. We can’t wait to see Coach Osika’s Regional Championship baseball team take the field next spring. Go Cavs!

Corunna Youth Football and Cheer has grown tremendously over the past few years and has over 210 participants. Flag football was added 2 years ago for future Cavaliers in grades K-3. Tackle football begins at grade 3, as well, and continues through 8th. Both boys and girls are welcome to play. We’ve had several girls play flag and tackle through the years and have had a lot of fun doing so. Our cheer division also continues to grow and is also a lot of fun to watch. Our cheerleaders are at every game, rain or shine, to do what they love best! rick wheeler - connection of the month

(Courtesy Photos)

By Amy Golombisky Recently, the Corunna Athletic Club elected a new president, Amira Lovejoy. She was chosen to succeed Rick Wheeler as he finished his third term for the CAC. Mr. Wheeler served as president from 200103, 2007-08 and more recently from 2016 to 2017. It’s not just the presidential position though, that has made Mr. Wheeler an invaluable member of the CAC. Mr. Wheeler graduated from Corunna High School in 1966, then had a four-year Navy career before he studied at Ferris State College for three years. At Ferris, he earned 2 degrees, an associates degree in tool & design and a BS in production management. Upon graduation from Ferris State, Mr. Wheeler spent nine months in a CETA program as a firefighter for the city of Owosso. After which he worked for a short time cutting brush in the northwest corner of Shiawassee County for another CETA program in the early 70s. In 1976, Mr. Wheeler was employed by General Motors working production and in six months began a tool and die apprenticeship. He spent the next 31 years as a journeyman tool and die maker. It is the same diehard dedication that Rick (with wife Barbara) has given to the CAC since their children, Heather & Cody, became old enough to play sports in the early 1990’s. It’s not easy to see the depth of his involvement because of the level of effectiveness that he is able to maintain. Rick Wheeler produces results. His efficient response to the ever changing demands of his hometown has

established a reputation for methodic efficiency. His boundless energy has served the Corunna community well. If a need arises, Rick is immediately available. When asked to comment, Corunna High School and Middle School Athletic Director, Ms. Nicole Norris, said his contributions were “immeasurable”. He has had a direct and positive influence on all the CAC activities and projects since he attended his first meeting in 1991. His heart belongs to the athletes, which is evident in the example he sets by producing the spectators programs (since 2013) that highlights our very own Corunna businesses and students. Undeniably selfless and forever focused on the good of the club, Mr Wheeler (Corunna VFW Honor Guard Member since 1975), has carried in the flag for the start of our home football games for the past 42 years. He has also played a role in numerous other community endeavors, such as the new James Oliver Curwood statue located at Curwood Castle. It is a pleasure to be part of a sincere and compassionate group of individuals that fosters integrity and recognizes diligence. It is the volunteers like Mr. Wheeler that epitomize the Corunna Connection. Rick, along with Mick “the million dollar man” Kazan (50/50) and Denny Lyones “CAC concessions manager” (since 2004) inspire each of us to dedicate more time and effort to our community and the athletes we know and love. Thank you to Rick Wheeler and all the volunteers who make our Corunna Connection such a generous and caring assemblage. It’s Great to be Gold!
