“I’M A FIRM BELIEVER IN THE BENEFITS OF OUTDOOR EXERCISE. JUST BEING OUTSIDE CAN BOOST YOUR MOOD AND ENERGIZE YOUR DAY.”
KAI HEARNDON-DIXON
AGE 44 JOB Production team member at Toyota; volunteer director, True Vine Christian Learning Center; minister, House of God Church Keith Dominion WORKOUT SPOT Planet Fitness in Lexington, home, and occasionally at work during downtime FITNESS ATTRACTION I came to the reality that if I don’t take as best care of myself while I have the chance I may not be here to experience all the glory that comes through my roles in life. HER PASSION I began competing in double-dutch jump roping, track n’ field, cross country, basketball, and archery. I currently use exercise as a means of therapy, social interaction and, most importantly, for health maintenance in my latter years. BIG WIN Early on in returning to “getting fit” I entered a local 5K. Whew… it was quite a task initially, but I was determined to see it through. To prepare myself I began by changing my diet, increasing water, fruits, vegetables while decreasing fried, junk, and fast foods. MOTIVATION I keep up my motivation by praying, learning my body as well as listening to my body. I need this in my daily life to be a better me. My biggest excuse is, ‘I have had a long day.’ My biggest reality is those days are when I need to exercise the most! Makeup: Amber Schnobrich, Strandz Salon and Threadz Boutique
LAURA CRAIG
AGE 38 JOB Owner of Belle & Rose Natural Skin Care WORKOUT SPOT In my cluttered, toy-ridden basement. FITNESS ATTRACTION I want to take care of my body to allow me to do things I love such as hiking in the mountains with my husband and two daughters, running along with them as they ride their bikes, dancing all night to my favorite live music, or trying new things like paddle boarding. I also want to model a healthy lifestyle to my girls, and for them to grow up using words like healthy, fit, and strong to describe their bodies, rather than skinny, pretty, or fat. BIG WIN For a while my level of fitness would be in spurts, but for the past few years I have found what works for me and stuck to 30-minute workouts, four to five days a week, mixed in with lots of fun with the family. MOTIVATION I keep my workouts short and sweet. I tell myself, ‘It’s only 30 minutes.’ Sometimes I am dragging myself down those steps, but I’m always glad I did.
