Decorative ArtS Orientalism

Exceptional pair of hard porcelain vases, decorated in the Japanese style with polychrom birds and butterflies highlighted with gold, amidst luxurious flowers and branches. Each vase presenting a different decor, outlined with fine gilded lines, is very carefully painted in subtle (from light to vivid) pink camaieu. According to Mrs Tamara Préaud, "conservateur en chef du patrimoine" and head of the collection department at the "Manufacture nationale de Sèvres", this pair of vases executed in 1858 and decorated in 1860 after drawings made by Alexandre David (painter-decorator at Sèvres), was at first presented in 1861 in the shop of the Sèvres Manufacture, and then bought by Emperor Napoleon III in February 1866 for his Tuileries Palace.
