Kristen: This is a little bit different, but I helped my best friend’s fiance pull off a surprise Valentine’s extravaganza: dinner, flowers, the works! She had no idea he was planning anything and was so happy. Most memorable/favorite Valentine’s Day gift given or received?
Krista: This is so cliche, but I’m a total sucker for a good Valentine’s Day mix. I have one I received in high school that I still listen to on the reg.
Favorite love song?
Krista: “At Last” by Etta James. I’ve become notorious for crying tears of happiness on the dance floor at weddings whenever this song is inevitably played. Etta gets me every time. Favorite flowers to receive?
Favorite Valentine’s Day memory?
Stacey: I like to not make the hugest deal out of Valentine’s Day, so some of my favorite memories of the holiday are just hanging out with girlfriends and having a Parks and Rec-style Galentine’s Day.

I am so not a long-stemmed red roses kind of gal. I do like old-fashioned garden roses (pink, please), but my favorite flowers by far are peonies. They have such a short season, but you can often find them year-round if you’re willing to splurge a little (and for Valentine’s Day, why not?).

by GRACE ATWOOD of STRIPES & SEQUINS Originally I had thought I’d make a Valentine card for this season’s issue of to & from, but then I thought about it, and decided to make a Valentine inspired necklace! The layers of lace, velvet and rhinestones make this just perfect for Valentine’s Day.
Step 1: Cut your lace into 5 pieces, each about 1.5” wide
Step 2: Arrange in a crescent/arc shape
Step 3: Using the tiniest bit of fabric glue, glue the sections together at the top
Step 4: Transfer to a plate or hard, non- Step 5: Cut your velvet ribbon into little porous surface, glue about 18” of ribbon pieces, each about ¼” wide to each side
Step 6: Begin carefully gluing your ribbon to the necklace form
Step 7: Glue the pieces all the way around Step 8: Slowly (again using as little glue Step 9: Once you are certain that you like the arc, being careful not to use too much as possible) begin arranging and gluing the design, press each rhinestone down glue your rhinestones to the velvet pieces firmly to set & allow to dry overnight!

Favorite Valentine’s Day memory?
Before my husband and I were married, we gave each other handmade cards for Valentine’s day one year (mostly because we were poor college students!). We both put a ton of thought into those cards. I sewed a design into the paper and calligraphed a poem I wrote. Michael wrote me a really lovely song on the guitar to go with his card. It was so simple and so memorable. Favorite flowers to receive?
My husband knows to get the quirky, unique flowers at our corner bodega, rather than reaching for the red roses. I love getting a bouquet of a new-to-me flowers!

Sweetest thing your significant other has done for you for Valentine’s Day?
In our first year of dating my husband left a cute card surrounded by candles just inside the front door so it was the first thing I saw when I got home. It included a riddle which lead to me to my next clue, located where we had our first date. Each clue took me to different places where we had experienced our “first kiss,” etc... and the last clue lead me to him waiting for me at a romantic restaurant where he had a small box with a promise ring inside. I was sold! Favorite way to show your love?
Writing a sweet note is my favorite way to express how I feel. My husband and I try to do this year round so we don’t feel the pressure of Valentine’s Day. I like leaving notes under his windshield on the car, or writing “I love you” on the shower glass door. It’s little things like tucking a note inside his pillow case when I’m out of town that I truly feel mean more than anything you can buy.

One of my favorite Valentine’s Day memories was right after I found out I was pregnant. My husband and I decided that we would get in the car and take a sporadic road trip to Palm Springs and stay for a few days. My favorite flower is a peony, but they are only in season for a short window so I only get them once a year on my birthday. For other special occasions my hubby always sends recreations of the centerpieces from our wedding. So sweet!

I’m kind of a classicist when it comes to flowers — so I’m completely thrilled to get a dozen (or even better, two or three dozen) simple red roses delivered to the office. Some things don’t need improving ... lol. Favorite Valentine’s Day memory?
Sometimes, there’s nothing better than a surprise. I remember on our first Valentine’s Day, Drew simply told me that I needed to be at his house at 7pm ... and to be kinda dressed up. So I arrived, in sport coat and velvet slippers, ready for whatever the evening held. He had actually arranged for a quiet dinner at the little restaurant where we had spent our first date. Had arranged for us to have the exact same table, and had ordered a small vase of red roses to be placed at my dinner setting. It was amazing!

This is an inside joke. On our honeymoon we saw a wild turkey roaming around and we gave it a nickname ‘the lone turkey’. Favorite Valentine’s Day memory?
With so many fantastic restaurants in Brooklyn, it’s rare for Elizabeth and me to go into the city for dinner, Valentine’s Day or not. But we do really love Prune in the East Village, where we had one of our first New York City dates. On the Valentine’s Day before we got married, we ate there really late (this was back when staying out late was no big deal to us) and everything was wonderful–the octopus appetizer, the wine, the perfectly browned chicken, the intimate atmosphere, and especially the company. Favorite love song?
“This Is Where I Belong” by the Kinks is an all-time favorite of mine and the fact that it was the first dance at our wedding makes it an easy pick for my favorite love song.

Favorite Valentine’s Day memory?
Now that Brian and I have kids, Valentine’s Day is a night to stay in, drink a nice bottle of wine, and cook up a special meal. We usually go for something easy like great steaks and a simple salad, and I love dreaming up a special tart recipe for dessert. Favorite love song?
Definitely “Ol’ 55” by Tom Waits. I think it beautifully captures the excitement of falling in love, but Brian thinks it’s corny.

Most memorable/favorite Valentine’s Day gift given or received?
I found an old roll of 2.5” paper from some long-defunct adding machine and strung it through my manual typewriter, and then pecked out every meaningful memory I could think of from the past year of our relationship. It took days and more than a few bottles of wine, but eventually I made it about 12ft into the roll before I was done, and hope to fill the remainder with many new memories to come. Last year we saw signage for a new restaurant going in near our house, in kind of an odd location. We looked into it and it seemed promising, so Michael made reservations for Valentine’s Day.
