Back in the swim in Shanghai WORLD AQUATICS CHAMPIONSHIPS

EVERY DAY 1PM, BBC2 Swimming is not an obvious TV sport. You can’t see the competitor’s faces or the emotion etched thereupon. But the splash and dash can be no less thrilling than a big horse race. The Brits will be pinning their hopes to Rebecca Adlington in the 400m and 800m freestyle – hopefully, they don’t catch the Australian curse of referring to any successful female athlete as ‘the nation’s golden girl’ – as well as Liam Tancock in the backstroke sprints.

For the Aussies, the burden of expectation rests on the women – Stephanie Rice, Liesel Jones, Jessicah Schipper – while they wait patiently for the next male star to emerge. But the real interest for this year’s championships is rooted in what happened at the competition two years ago, when space-age racing suits led to 43 world records being broken and the competition being known as the ‘Plastic Games’. The suits were subsequently banned, but we will now see how much damage they did. If no one gets anywhere near those suit-assisted records, swimming’s embarrassment will deepen.

One of the first challenges facing Villas-Boas, Ancelotti’s replacement, is to deal with Torres, who has managed just one goal in 18 games for Chelsea. He will be hoping Torres find his touch and spares him the unenviable task of telling Abramovich that his big buy is a bust. Because if Villas-Boas is serious, he can’t allow himself to be pressured into picking an underperforming Torres ahead of Didier Drogba, Nicolas Anelka or Salomon Kalou.
