GIG GUIDE MUSIC & CLUBS

Alison Grinter PICKS OUT THIS WEEK’S BEST LIVE MUSIC

GIG OF THE WEEK DIZZEE RASCAL When he first emerged from East London as a brash new talent sporting debut LP Boy In Da Corner it looked as though Dizzee might languish in the musical margins occupied by critically acclaimed, yet commercially ignored grime artists. A Mercury Prize certainly put him on the map, but it’s the cheeky chappy’s recent crossover into dance and pop which has sent him stratospheric with three massive number ones (Dance Wiv Me with Calvin Harris, Bonkers with Armand Van Helden, and Holiday with, er, himself). Don’t miss.

LADYSMITH BLACK MAMBAZO

GREEN DAY

With Afro-pop everywhere now it’s difficult to recall how radical Paul Simon’s appropriation of Ladysmith Black Mambazo’s music for Graceland sounded back in 1986. The South African collective fronted by Joseph Shabalala can still give you chills with their Zulu harmonies.

Like The Ramones before them there is something ageless about pop/punksters Green Day. Little wonder, as the trio’s latest album 21st Century Breakdown will attest, they have made an art form out of creating teenage-y, anthemic threechord wonders. They’re in town to plug the new album and play hits such as Longview this week.
