A Word from the Chapter Directors

Tony & Lori Douglas Man, the months are just flying by. Here we are going into October and autumn is here. Where has the year gone? I know we have had FUN, at least a lot of us have. As for me, I had to take a break for a couple of months, but I’m on my way back! We have a lot going on in the month of October. We have our meeting on the 4th, the Chili Cook-off on the 11th will be at Preacher and Precious house in Trenton TN. On the 18 th we will have our 3rd Annual Chicken Cookout, which consists of half a Grilled Chicken, Baked Beans, Slaw and a Roll for $8.00 a plate. A percentage of the money raised will go to St. Jude. This will be at Bob’s House of Honda at 603A Vann Dr. Jackson, TN. We will also give away a Remington 770 Rifle, 243 Cal. Bolt Action, with a Scope. Tickets are as follows: for a donation of $5.00 you get 1 ticket, for $8.00, 2 tickets and for $10.00, 3 tickets. Several of you across Tennessee have purchased tickets for the rifle by email to me. If you are interested in getting your tickets for the rifle, email me and I will mail them to you. You do not have to be present to WIN! Also on the 25 th of October, we will have our 25th Anniversary for Forked Deer Wings. This Chapter was started 25 years ago in October in a parking lot of a church. Then in January 1989 the first newsletter rolled out. I have a copy of that newsletter. Remember, as a GWRRA member, if you are in need of something; pick it up at Bob’s Honda and get a discount on it. Just tell them you are a member before they ring you up. We have had two previous members to rejoin us. Welcome to Barry & Susan Harrell. WE are glad you are back. At the September gathering, they brought a couple of visitors with them, whom also ended up joining GWRRA and will be members of Chapter N. We wanted to also welcome to the Chapter, Randall and Beverly Wilson. I hope they experience the FUN and rides they we have had in the past and the ones that are in the future. Remember in February the Sweetheart Ball will be at Fall Creek Falls State Park. You need to get registered and let’s all get together and have a BALL! Most of us here like that location and everything is right there. You don’t have to leave to go eat because the restaurant is right there. The rooms are right there and all the activities are right there. It couldn’t be any better. Good choice Gary and Patti. We had some that went to Discovery Park in Union City, TN. and they stated that place is just Awesome. So, if any of you across Tennessee are looking for a place to visit, check this place out.

COUPLE OF THE YEAR 2014 Oliver & Gattie Welch Hello members and friends of GWRRA, We really had some very hot days during the last weeks of August and the first of September. We didn't get to attend the August meeting due to bad weather but heard it was well attended. Our chapter rider coordinator, Billy, made us aware of a scheduled ride for August 23rd. We met at the Trenton's Exxon. Those who adventured for the ride were Billy & Shirley Mullins, Avery & Diane Davis, David & Jeanette Bowens, and ourselves. Our granddaughter, Teo, was there to see us off to the Discovery Park of America in Union City, TN. The museum gave us a great entertainment and educational experience. We were only able to visit indoors due to the hot weather. Our family is planning to visit soon so we can tour the entire park. We didn't do the St Jude ride because we attended the funeral services of our "Mother of the Church". She was 90 years old with 77 years of membership. We are looking forward to our next day ride on Saturday, September 20th to Lawrenceburg, TN. Remember to

ride safe and have fun!

See you at the meeting.

Goings On Here is the fun we have had: September 6, 2014 was the monthly gathering. We had 20 members in attendance. Avery and Diane, Billy and Shirley, Jeff and Shari, James and Nancy with special quests (2 Nancy grandchildren), Gary and Anna, Polly and Jim, Bill, Tony, Sandy, Barry and Susan with special guests (2 friends and a grandson), Janet and Don, Oliver and Gattie, and Teo. Tony prepared a couple of games and we all had a great time. Some were the players and some were the laughers. Tony picked on our two returning members (Barry and Susan) and the guests that came with them (it’s any wonder some of them come back for a second time). If you haven’t played the clothes pin game, you have missed some real fun. Polly and Jim were contestants as well. Then Tony had planned another game from the pages of “Minute to Win It”. I don’t really think anyone can stack three golf balls and have them remain for 30 seconds. Well neither did any in our group. No winners here (but a whale of a time). We had the drawing for the “Button, Button Who’s Got the Button”, and again we had no winner. So next month all he money stays in and everyone who participates gets a chance to win big money. The amount in the fund stands at $$$$$$. The big 50/25/25 winners were Bill Henson and Barry Harrell. September 11th was the Rockabilly Café Dinner Ride. Bill and Shirley, Diane and Avery and Jeff and Shari made the ride. Barry and Susan traveled to Memphis for the “Wings Across Tennessee”. When they arrived they met up with Bill Henson. Sorry Reginald was not feeling well and had to leave early. Get better Reginald. Barry tells us that all across Tennessee Gold Wingers turned in $73,200 for the Kids at St. Jude. Way to go!! On September 20th there was the District Ride for Middle and West Tennessee. A total of 104 riders made their way to David Crockett State Park and 12 of those riders were from TN-N. Billy and Shirley, Diane and Avery, Oliver and Gattie, Sandy, Polly and Jim, Bill, David and Jeanette attended. Good show for TN-N. And it was a beautiful day for a ride. Now here is a flash for you—on the 26th Polly and Jim packed themselves up, got on their bike and made their way across to the east for the North Carolina “Wings Across the Smokies”. You the bomb!!! I know they had fun because they sent me a picture of all those bikes. And then they rode back across to Tennessee with that Chapter Z bunch. Way to take care of our riders Charlie. Now here is the fun we are going to have: October 4th will be the monthly gathering. Remember that we will meet first and then eat at 6:00. I think I am going to like the leisure dinner. Do not miss the 3rd Annual Chili Cook Off gathering at the Seaton-Hayes Campground on October 11th. You will find us at 256 DeeDee Cove at the Willow Oaks Campground off of Highway 100. You can either come in on Hwy 412 and take Hwy 100 or you can come in on Hwy 100 through Decaturville until you reach the campground. Call me at my cell phone if you get lost. My number is 731-845-6025. Bring your best chili if you want to win the competition. You have to unseat two time champion Reginald Seymour. Desserts are always welcome—Shirley does some mean brownies. Bring yourself to have some fun. Chairs aplenty exist at the house. Now who was the corn hole champion last year. Our own Chicken Cook out will be the 18th and our 25th year anniversary celebration is the 25th. Both events are at Bob’s House of Honda. See you there.

News From National How to have FUN by "Thinking outside the box." We have recently been hearing a lot about a Chapter in New Mexico that is really having a lot of FUN at their Chapter gatherings by "Thinking outside the box!" We did some checking and here is what we found: Judy and John Metts, new CDs of NM‐R representing Roswell and SE New Mexico, weren't sure what they were supposed to do in their new role as CDs. Their DD, Keith Morrison, and ADD, Doug Pettigrew told them they needed to make sure the Members had FUN, particularly at their gatherings. Judy went to work immediately. She and John, her husband, decided to come up with a different theme for each gathering. The first was Mardi Gras. Having attended Mardi Gras in Mobile, Alabama, they knew just what was needed to bring that celebration to NM‐R. They made up strings of beads with the GWRRA emblem on each for all their Members. They asked the restaurant for some special menu items, lots of decorations and two "King" cakes. The next month was Easter. Along with decorations, they dressed in their Easter Bunny ears, and presented the Members with plastic eggs that contained lots of FUN gifts. Each was opened separately and lots of laughter was heard throughout the crowd. In April, (this is my favorite idea) they held an "After Taxes Party." Members were asked to dress according to their tax status. If they had to pay extra taxes, they came dressed as paupers. If they received a refund, they were asked to dress in their finest attire. Each couple had to bring a can of corn and a can of ranch beans which were opened and added to hamburger meat, onions and tomatoes. The empty cans were washed out and used as bowls to eat their stew. For dessert, there was "Millionaire Pie" served on china plates. May is the time for Spring cleaning, so everyone was asked to bring a small garage sale/white elephant‐type item. Each item was placed in a brown paper sack. All of the door prizes were also placed in brown sacks. All sacks were passed around, tied to a story with "trigger words" that changed the direction of the bags. At the end, everyone ended up with at least one or more bags. June used the theme of "The Wizard of GWRRA," follow the "Yellow Brick Road". Members received awards and prizes for riding around the Land of GWRRA and managing to conquer and preserve. The award for courage was given the folks who showed courage and in enduring the "Wicked Wind of the West" on their way to the Region Rally in St. George, UT. They also received a stuffed lion, a set of bungie cords and some super glue to hold themselves in their seats. There were many other awards themed to the "Wizard of Oz" and cleverly adapted to GWRRA. They were all met with appreciation and lots of applause and most important, every Member had lots of FUN! All of these themes were also supported with clever and humorous certificates that I am sure ended up being displayed with pride, thus reminding everybody of the FUN they had at their NM‐R gathering. YOU too can think outside of the box with your gatherings. If you run out of ideas, just ask Judy & John Metts, they have lots to share with you. By the way, the attendance at their Chapter gatherings has continued to grow. That's all the time we have now, we're on our way to NM‐Rs next gathering. We recognize "FUN" when we hear about it. Our thanks to Judy & John Metts, Keith & Teresa Morrison and Doug & Chris Pettigrew for sharing with us all, "How to have FUN at a Chapter gathering!" News From Region N

ello Wingers,

Have you ever been in a conversation with someone, trying to explain your side of a situation, and you can tell by their body language, the obligatory smile and courteous nod, that they don't have a clue what you're talking about? You just wish you could place this person in your shoes and to have them see through your eyes for just five minutes. It was the late 1940s. Eastern Airline's chair-man, Captain Eddie Rickenbacker, had a problem. Customers were complaining be-cause the airline was mishandling luggage far too often. When nothing else seemed to work, he decided to take drastic action. Rickenbacker called a special meeting of the management personnel in Miami. Eastern's management flew to Miami and was told their baggage would be delivered to their hotel rooms. Instead, Rickenbacker had the lug-gage stored overnight. It was summer, the weather was hot and humid and the hotel had no air-conditioning. The various managers showed up to the meeting the next morning unshaven, teeth unbrushed, and wearing dirty clothes. There was no sign of the baggage all that day. But that night Rickenbacker had it delivered, with a great pounding on all the doors, at 3:00 a.m. He opened the next morning's session by saying, "Now you know how the customer feels when you mishandle his luggage." He knew his team would be ineffective until his people empathized with their customers! The same is true with us. Until we under-stand another's problem, we will never be effective in business, in relationships or in any organization. The deepest understanding occurs when we actually sense what the other person is feeling. People don't listen or receive advice until they understand that we understand. That's one of our biggest challenges. Every member in GWRRA has a story to tell, a view to share or an opinion that deserves an ear. When we have the opportunities to hear, do we have the skills to listen? Learn to be an effective listener, and you're well on your way to becoming a great leader. See ya around the curve,

Alan and Carolyn Little GWRRA Region N Director

Patti and I, along with several others Tennessee GWRRA members, attended the Weekend at the Opry. This was a first for the National putting something together like this. There were no vendors, seminars, or classes to attend, just a weekend of GWRRA members getting together and socializing. They started out with an opening ceremonies on Friday morning. Due to poor planning on my part we missed this. I had a doctor’s appointment early that morning. Dennis and Jan Peterson represented us for that. They had scheduled a dinner boat cruise and a night at the Grand Old Opry. These were extra things that you could sign up for and attend. We felt these were a little pricey but several people attended these events. We sort of did our own thing and went to the mall with some of our friends from Chapter A. Thanks Troy, Vickie, and Sally for showing us around the mall. The event also had a meet and greet set in the afternoon where we could socialize with our fellow GWRRA members. They also had some great door prizes to give away but the way they were drawing from arm band numbers had a hard time finding winners. It seems that everyone was out doing other things. They figured this out and began to give door prize tickets as you entered room. This helped cut down on drawing numbers after number without getting a winner. Josie Nelson was a big time winner at this. She not only won some great door prizes but got a Director’s Award Pin from Ray and Sandi Garris. It was for her jubilant dance she did when she won a door prize. She also won a second place plaque in the dance contest. The event was a low key sort of thing. The dinner and dance on Saturday night was fun. Sort of surprised that we were fed pizza and salad for the dinner. Scoter Davis did a great job with the dance. He put in several games and contest along with some great dancing music. The only complaint I had about the event was that if you did not do one of the extra events there was no place to hang out and just socialize with your GWRRA friends. The event room was closed except for the meet and greet. We did meet some great people from all across the United States and Canada. The pub crawl was fun. Each pub had some national people stationed in it and they signed our card and when the card was full you dropped it into a box and the card was drawn at closing ceremonies for a nice door prize. They gave away two of the riding jackets. We got to meet the founding members of GWRRA along with the National staff during the pub crawl. One did not have to drink at these places go, just go in, locate the leadership and get your card signed. The closing ceremonies were fun and the group picture taken on the stair case is going to be nice. Look for the Tennessee folks standing up front.

Fun Times—September Gathering

Just good food and fellowship. Welcome back Susan and Barry. Look they brought guests. And Nancy who are those lovely children. Look at those smiles. Above picture is Janet giving her hug to Oliver, Gattie and Teo visit and James enjoys the food. At the left is Shari, Gary, Don, Billy, Avery, Janet and Tony.

Games you sometimes fear. Tony picks on Susan and Barry on their first meeting back with us. Polly and Jim are in the background . The old clothes pin game. You cannot begin to describe what just too place. I think the winners were the guests. Yes, Tony picked on them too.

Fun Times—September Gathering

Tony ‘s Minute to Win It. Stack the golf balls and they must stand 3 seconds. Such intensity. Don, Billy, Shirley, Avery. Below is Shari, Anna, Gary, Jeff. And to the right is Polly and Jim.

During Spring Fling in April, the announcement for Webmaster of the Year got lost in the changing of the guard (Richard to Gary). Here I am presenting that award to Tony on behalf of Joe. Way to go Joe. Webmaster of the year for 2012 and 2013.

Bill Henson counts his share of the 50/50 money. Barry was the other recipient. Hey who drew those winning tickets? 9

Member’s Viewpoint-Wings Across Tennessee

TN-N

Susan and I started out at the Pilot and met the other riders for Wings Across Tennessee. It took about a hour and half to get to St. Jude in Memphis. When Susan and I got there we met another of our chapter members Bill Henson. We didn’t know that he planned to be there After the time to start the event, the media personnel decided they wanted picture to get the annual picture of all the chapters that were in attendance. Chapter N’s picture will be of Bill, Susan, and myself. Reginald came by but was too sick to stay. We had some great speakers and we met some of the patients. The meal was good too. Chapter C took over the meeting and Tom gave us the total of the ride. The chapters together had given $72,600 from across Tennessee. They always pass the hat around and collected a little over $600. The meeting was adjourn and we went on a ride around Memphis and then headed home. We missed all of Chapter N at the ride but we really enjoyed the ride to St Jude.... Barry Harrell

Fun Times—Wings Across The Smokies

I remember the first time I met Jim and Polly. Jim said he came to ride. Well they certainly do that. They were the lone Chapter N attendees to the North Carolina “Wings Across the Smokies”. They sent me a text message when they started back. Seems they hitched their trike with the Chapter Z team and made the trip back to Tennessee. I did not get any other text message, but I bet they had the time of their lives. And they certainly did ride on this trip.

Fun Times—District Ride David Crockett State Park Twelve made the trip to the Middle /West Tennessee District Ride. Jeanette, David, Gattie, Oliver, Billy, Shirley, Polly, Jim, Avery, Diane, Bill and Sandy. Yep, all bikes but mine. Trucking it again.
