Tips for Searching Slave Ancestors 1. Slave Surnames may belong to a prior slaveholder than the current one you are searching 2. When searching the 1870 U.S. Census, subtract 10 years from your ancestor’s age to figure out how old they were in 1860. 3. Record all spelling variations of surnames and search each version 4. Look for slaveholders from the 1870 census as “Heads of Household” in the 1860 slave schedule 5. Search the Freedman’s Bureau records in Heritage Quest. The Freedman’s Bureau was established by Congress in 1865 to help slaves during the post Civil War.
