LIVING IN Peace

Anyone else feeling the pressure of the year end rush already? I’m barely bidding October farewell and I find myself wishing I could fast forward 6 weeks to the December holidays! This issue is a good reminder of the annual goodwill events that make Irene such a lovely village to live in.

ILA falling short of their prescribed membership percentage as this could potentially mean our quiet, safe Village will no longer be! I clearly remember the 90’s when Irene Village was referred to as the ‘Wild Wild West’!

YOU SAID IT

Another tragic pet death! I hear too often the news of a pet being hit by a car in our ‘quiet’ suburb. On Friday, 8 September at 18h20, it happened to us. Our beautiful Jasper, our loving friend and my constant companion’s life was taken under the wheels of a car in Stopford Road. It was the evening of the fun run, so the gates at Stopford Road were open (after 18h00) for traffic convenience convenience vs a life? That’s probably unfair, but blame and anger are part of the range of emotions we experience after the death of a loved one. I blame myself for not checking where my boy was when I opened the gate. I blame the driver for mowing Jasper down - even though I jumped out and shouted a warning. The driver didn’t even stop. But none of this matters. None of it will bring our boy back. We’re not alone in experiencing the heartache, the tears, the grief that grips us when one of our family is killed so brutally and unnecessarily. Motorists drive too fast in our village. This is prevalent on some roads more than others, but it’s a general problem that sometimes costs us dearly. So what can we learn or do?:

- We still need enhanced speed control. I’ve no doubt some cars reach 80 kph + in some streets. - We need education of what a Woonerf is and how motorists must change their behavior in this area. - We need communication re gate schedule changes. It’s not sufficient to announce there is a race/event in Irene. We need to know when open gates/changed traffic patterns present a risk. As a reminder, here is the definition of a Woonerf: A “woonerf” is an urban design tool which originated in the Netherlands. It is intended to transform streets from car prioritised spaces to shared spaces for all modes of transport, including pedestrians… Sidewalks are also eliminated in a woonerf, since the idea is that people and vehicles share the same space. Whilst Irene has woonerf status, the way we should adapt and behave is either ignored or not known. There is a need to convey and educate re this message. I understand the enormity of the task, but it’s an ongoing process. Regarding traffic calming, the ‘sprint’ to and from Stopford gate is a familiar ‘sound’. We hear the racing of engines through the gears, from our gardens. The speed limit is supposed to be 30 kph.

7 As a suggestion: I experience an effect on my own awareness when I enter a nearby suburb with an electronic speed warning. Perhaps these would work at key positions. An added need for increased awareness and a change in behaviour, is the nursery school, also positioned near the bottom of Stopford Road, and an increased number of pedestrians crossing Stopford between the cemetery and Hamilton (often with dogs - I’ve heard of two other dogs killed in this area). Perhaps portable speed bumps or chicanes could be used at ‘problem areas’ and when gate times are changed for social events when high traffic volumes are anticipated.

GARANKUWA HOSPITAL

CHRISTMAS 2017 Once again I am appealing to the people of Irene to collect toys that are in good condition for the children at George Mukarhi Hospital. For over 30 years I have collected toys to give to the children on Christmas Day. This will be the only gift that the child will probably ever receive. Toys can be dropped off at 19 Bruce Road, Irene. Barbara Tanton

I served on the ILA for several years in the ‘early days’. I know the current committee does outstanding work and has the interests of Irene as well as its residents at heart. But there can be room for improvements, especially in the area of the school. My Jasper is gone. Some of you knew him - he had many 2 and 4 legged friends at the Oval. It needn’t have happened. Some small steps could make a difference next time. Heartbroken, Leighton family

IRENE RESIDENT AREA AGENT LIZA SMIT

liza.smit@leapfrog.co.za

Dear ILA Members & IRENE RESIDENTS Oh, how we needed the rain! The recent storms and showers have brought welcome relief and turned our lawns green overnight! However, Tshwane asks that all residents continue to use water sparingly. The watering of gardens, with hose or sprinkler, is still restricted - with no watering between 11:00 - 16:00. Please adjust your irrigation timers and inform gardeners not to water during these times. Projects: • Termites have moved in on the Oval but thanks to a donation by Philip Hoff and the assistance of Leon and his trusted team, we managed to help them move out! We will continue to monitor. Thank you to all involved for your assistance. • We also thank Leon and his team with the clean-up around Irene, these last few months, and especially for the wonderful work he does at the Concentration Camp cemetery in Stopford Road. • The fibre project should be completed by the end of October. Residents may now arrange their connection with an ISP of their choice. ISPs using

Openserve, may be found on www. fibretiger.co.za. Security: Although crime remains very low in Irene, the December holidays will soon be upon us. Remember - criminals do not go on holiday in Dec! Now is the time to check how secure your home is. Repair faulty alarms and beams in good time. Check eyes, door contacts, window latches, doors locks and all outdoor buildings. Ensure your gate motor cannot be tampered with. Do not become an easy target and a victim of crime – you need to enjoy your holiday! Data changes/holiday contacts: Should you need to update your data or make special holiday arrangements, please obtain a form from Alyson at ilamanager@irene.co.za. Please always include your full name and address in your mail and provide any special instructions in point form - this makes it easier for EBS to capture and easier to read by the Controllers. Electronics Gates (Albert Rd): Residents who have access to these gates are requested not to open the

13

gates for others or for any contractor. Access is strictly for personal use. The beams do not recognise high clearance vehicles or trailers - there is a risk of the gates closing on these vehicles! Not to mention the damage to the gates! Residents requiring assistance with a very large vehicle that cannot turn in the road e.g. a removal van, should contact Jan. EBS will then be sent to supervise the vehicle through the gate. Booms: Tailgating and taking too long to drive through booms is a major headache! Damage to the booms and electronics can be extensive and cars are not spared either. The booms close within 4 - 6 secs - so please move off quickly. If you find yourself chatting to the guard or looking at your cell, do not move forward - swipe again. Tailgating at Queen North and Pioneer booms is particularly bad as motorists try to beat the lights! ILA Membership: There is a lot of movement in and out of Irene at this time of year - children moving to new schools, a change of job or a promotion. Retirees scale down and so the cycle of life continues with

new families moving into our beautiful village. Irene is an amazing place to live and raise a family and so we ask that all new residents join the ILA and help us keep Irene safe for many years to come. Contact Alyson or Jan for information or pop in to see Jan in his office in Stopford Rd, at the cemetery. Non-members are also urged to now join the ILA. Consider this - if our membership dips below 70% we will be very close to the minimum 67% required by Tshwane, and risk losing our closure and security forever! Council will just not renew our closure! That means: • all gates and booms will be removed - ALL gates! • the village will be open 24/7 • the electric fence will not serve its purpose • property prices will plummet Simply put, the clock will be turned back 20 yrs to a crime level that no one wants to see again – EVER! This is what it was like in Irene in the 80’s and 90’s: • 30 to 40 incidents a month – 12 on one Sunday alone! We called it Black Sunday!

• 4 residents murdered 1998 - 2000. Shot at close range! • car hijackings were rife! In daylight - 8 in one week alone! All drivers held at gunpoint, knifepoint, tied up or driven and dumped in the veld. One died! • armed robberies - residents and domestics attacked, tied up and gagged! • house break-ins - electronics, cameras, money, jewellery, guns stolen. Flat screens ripped of walls! • car theft/car break-ins - a nightly occurrence if vehicles were left outside • runners hijacked for their trainers. • children pushed off their bicycles on their way to Irene Primary school! • intruders in our gardens EVERY night! Our walls became known as the Ho Chi Minh Trail! You could not walk in Irene at night! • bicycles, garden tools and washing stolen from our gardens and sheds • children’s bicycles stolen from The Oval, whilst they were playing hockey. ILA Membership (Irene Village) currently 77.3% i.e. 470 members out of 608 properties, of which 26 are in arrears over 60 days. This reduces the paying membership to 73%. ILA Membership (Ext 2) currently 45.2% i.e. 14 members out of 31 properties of which 2 are in arrears over 60 days. This reduces the paying membership to 38.7%

In the last month, we had an incident in Ext 2 where a non-member was a victim of crime, but they still contacted EBS for assistance. This is becoming a trend where non-members request services and assistance from ILA and EBS. ILA and EBS will not refuse to assist as the security of our Village is important and a priority, but we also feel that it is not fair that 70% of the Village contribute to the benefit of 100%. It is time to pull together and be the community that we are known for. Join the ILA, pay your account and make a difference - your support is vital to the continuation of our closure and the security and safety of all residents in Irene and in Ext 2. For membership information and rates call or email: Jan Swanepoel 083 607 6600 Email: jan.swanepoel@irene.co.za Alyson Lea-Cox 072 714 3740 Email: ilamanager@irene.co.za We thank our current contributing membership most sincerely for their loyal and continued support. Kind regards

IRENE SIDEWALKS by Lisle Caromba

In 2005 the Irene Garden Club held a Sidewalk Competition. Colleen Newton was the Chairlady of the club, at that time. In my capacity as Secretary, then, I wrote a series of articles on the various aspects of gardening, and specifically sidewalk gardening, for the Town Crier. Well known horticulturist, Lynton Johnson was our judge, and there were various categories. You may have noticed that one of the plaques is still displayed at the corner of Queen and Laurence Lane. This one belongs to Irene personality, Deirdre Taylor, who owns what I regard as, debatably, Irene’s most beautiful garden. If you walk past, and are lucky enough to find the driveway free of cars, you will spot the wonderful entrance to her ceramics studio. Deirdre won the prize for the Best Waterwise Sidewalk Garden.

Now, all of these years later, I am retired. I try to walk my dogs daily and once again I have taken an interest in our Irene sidewalks. So what is new, regarding sidewalks? My immediate thought is the current craze for succulents. I am besotted with succulents and have two beds in my garden devoted entirely to them. In addition I have aloes and other succulents dotted here and there in the garden. Succulents are simply ideal for a rather inaccessible spot! One definitely needs low maintenance plants on the sidewalk, where there are no taps and where hosepipes may not be long enough to reach. In addition, many of us have high walls, thus we are dependent upon rainfall for the sidewalk. If I had a north facing sidewalk I would definitely go for this option. My own sidewalk is south facing, and shady, with a wall and large trees. It is nothing to write home about, I promise! I have quite a lot of Fairy Crassula (crassula multicava) at the edges, as it is low growing and beyond it is ribbon bush (hypostes aristata) which can take drought very well - but looks rather dreadful in winter. Fairy crassula is the only succulent I know of which can take all day shade. It also survives drought well. Next thing to consider is - a walkway. When we had the competition, having a walkway gained you a whole lot of

17

Finally, I had a laugh recently. I put a close-up shot of an aloe onto Facebook. One of the compliments that I received for the shot came from fellow resident, Tracey Jolly. I informed her that the photo was taken on her own sidewalk, as I always carry my phone with on my walks. Your sidewalk may have appeared on my Facebook page too!

points! Now, I feel that is not terribly important - but perhaps considerate and kind to your fellow residents. In one of our narrow lanes, I was walking the dogs, when a car came up the road. On my right I had a wall with, at most, a 50cm space between it and the tar. On the other side, I was faced with a ‘proper’ 3m sidewalk - but one of those sidewalks was full of nothing but tumbled rock. Quite unwalkable! I had to rapidly shorten the dogs leads and squash onto the side of the road.

St Martin’s Church in 1976

Perhaps it was this incident which prompted me to put pen to paper. Yes, I can understand the desire to keep all and sundry as far from one’s property as possible, from a security viewpoint. But whatever happened to our Woonerf concept? Then, the size of the sidewalk. As a walker, I appreciate and enjoy the large sidewalks. MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN A UNIQUE WAY Clara Belli, a resident of Woodhill, is making a difference to the lives of the blind, wheelchair bound and autistic children by volunteering to rear guide dogs. The Guide Dog Association of South Africa is a well-established non-profit organisation with a mission to enhance the mobility and independence of people who have visual, physical and developmental needs. With services such as highly trained guide dogs for the visually impaired, highly trained service dogs for the physically disabled and highly trained autism support dogs, this association relies heavily on volunteers such as Clara to ensure their service goals are met. With a great love for dogs and having done similar volunteering in other parts of the world, Clara was excited to learn of the Guide Dog Association of South Africa when she first moved into Woodhill. After contacting them, applying and going through the process of becoming a volunteer, Clara now ‘fosters’ Jagger and Oscar who have both become a part of their growing family. So how does it all work? Once your application to foster a dog from the association is successful, based on facts such as the size of your

garden, do you have other animals at home, etc, you will be assigned a puppy around 8 weeks of age to foster. The association names the puppies and provide all the necessary health checks and inoculations. This service continues throughout the time that the dog lives with you, with vet services, food and someone always on call to answer any questions that you may have. Once your puppy comes home, you will be required to travel to the association’s premises in order for you puppy to get its weekly training. All the puppies in the litter that yours came from will meet for this training so it’s a great opportunity for you to meet other foster parents and for the puppies to see their brothers and sisters! This training runs from 7 weeks of age to 20 weeks of age. In addition to this, you will be required to give your foster dog as much exposure to the outside world as possible. This is obviously a necessity as the dog will

24

Should your foster dog not meet this requirement, then you will have first choice to take them permanently, otherwise there is a waiting list of families who will happily adopt. With around 100 puppies a year being reared for this great cause, the Guide Dog Association of South Africa is always looking for new volunteers. If you aren’t able to foster a dog then there are other ways to donate or sponsor.

eventually be accompanying the person in need everywhere. Additional training sessions are scheduled on a regular basis where you are welcome to join. Trips to local malls, schools, hospitals, restaurants, etc are all examples of places you would frequent with your dog. Once the initial training is complete and your dog is identified as suitable to go to a person in need, they will then enter formal training where they will stay at the association as a weekly border for around 6 months. Experts at the association will determine whether the dog is suited to a guide or service roll and they will then match the dog to a person in need. Of course, the criteria to moving on to the formal training is very strict with health, temperament and personality playing vital roles. Only around 60% of the dogs make it through.

Clara has really enjoyed her experience with Jagger and Oscar. From arranging ‘car pools’ to the training classes, to meeting like-minded people who have now become her friends. The only downside is saying goodbye to your beloved foster dog if they are accepted into the formal training, but you do so knowing that you have done something for the greater good. The people in need who receive the trained dogs are eternally grateful for your part in giving them their beloved companions. If you feel that fostering a guide dog is something you would like to consider doing, please do not hesitate to make contact with the association.
