LIVING IN

Peace

Christmas is just around the corner and the festivities are evident everywhere you do.

From shopping centres putting up giant Christmas trees to the usual Irene houses decorating with lights and bunting - it’s wonderful to have the Festive Season celebrated in our little Village.

appeal of a secure, family orientated lifestyle is one many envy. At no point should be underestimate all the hard work that’s been done behind the scenes to ensure our Village stays this way. I hope that some of the new residents will take an interest in one day taking over and ensuring that our Irene traditions and buildings remain in good standing.

There are two inclusions into this issue which made me proud to say I live in Irene. The first was the article received from Ros Lindley congratulating Barbara Tanton on her outstanding management of our Village Hall over the past few years and the second was the Tshwane Master Swimmings raising funds for Irene Homes.

This time of year is all about giving and so we encourage you to clear out your kids rooms for the Garankuwa Hospital drive that Barbara Tanton organises as well as sparing a thought for our security guards as they work very hard all year round to keep our Village safe. If you are able to donate/ help in any way, please do so - it’s much appreciated.

We are truly blessed to live in a village where residents spend lots of their free time arranging, managing, supporting and successfully carrying out tasks that make Irene what it is.

With very little time left for Christmas shopping, organising and last minute arrangements, I trust that you are all looking forward to a well deserved break...

As we have seen over the past few years, there are many new young families moving into the Village - the

A FINE

achievement

Julia Davies left and Ros Ambler Lindley right with Barbara Tanton. On Wednesday, 26 October 2016, a handful of invited guests arrived at the Irene Village Hall, by a rather vague request from Barbara Tanton. At first I thought I had forgotten an auspicious date, like a birthday or something! Anyway, ever curious, I RSVP’d ‘Attending’ and went along at 6pm as per the instruction. I was still mystified. Until I started asking questions to all and sundry, giving Barbara a wide berth, still thinking it was really something I should have known about, or worse, forgotten. Anyway, as per Barbara, she collared me, grabbed my hand and said, “Come and have a look Rossy.” When

Barbara speaks, it is but for us to listen and obey. At the entrance to the hall she bid me turn around and look up. There on the lovely plaque above the entrance are the names of all the people who have been Supervisor/ Administrator/Manager/General Factotum, written in gold was the last entry to date - Barbara Tanton. And, I may add, in her case, a Genie - for all the incredible magic she manages to pull out of her bottle of tricks. Truly a worthy recipient. I think, personally, Barbara has managed the Hall in an incredibly exemplary manner. Never before has so much maintenance been successfully and beautifully completed. The hall so frequently

looks transformed into what I consider its best stage ever since I arrived in Irene in January 1990. A most gracious speech was given in her honour by another long-time resident, Clive Martin, and thereafter, whilst tucking into some tasty cocktail delicacies and excellent wine accompaniments (plus of course some nonalcoholic beverages) it was suggested we, one by one, give an anecdote pertaining to Barbara. There were good laughs, applauds, sighs at her

philanthropic contributions, as well as many a ‘gasp’ at her humourous antics - an all round evening of awe, praise and congeniality. We again lifted our glasses to someone who deserves the accolades. To you Barbara and may you continue to organise the Pensioners Christmas Tea (merely one of the lengthy list of her accomplishments) long after you are way-beyond-being-a-pensioneryourself.

A GARDEN

filled with birds For many aspiring bird watchers, inviting birds into their garden is a wonderful opportunity to welcome new species and monitor regular visitors. Although many bird watchers already have gardens that are attractive to local birdlife, whether you are just a beginner or a wellseasoned bird watcher, we have a few tips as to what the key elements are to ensuring your garden is bird friendly:

9 Bird-friendly plants Planting shrubs and trees which offer nectar and seeds is probably the simplest way to ensure birds come your way. Remember that some birds are also attracted to the heads of grasses and grains. Apart from beautiful flowers and fruit that your garden will produce, you will be amazed at the abundant birdlife it invites. Roosting sites If it’s nesting birds that you’d like to see then established trees will naturally provide a source of shelter and roosting. Indigenous trees will attract numerous birds throughout the year and if you plant grasses such as reeds and bulrushes then you will not only be providing a wonderful nesting site but the nesting materials needed too. Mulch and compost Leaving your fallen leaves and twigs in the garden will provide a micro habitat for various insects, grubs and worms – heaven for insect eating birds. They will love turning over leaves and debris in search of grubs. Water for birds With our current water crises, birds will love to visit a bird bath in your garden.

Place it in a spot where there is thick foliage and established trees so that when the rain fills it, the water doesn’t evaporate too quickly in the scorching sun. The birds also don’t like to feel too exposed so a secluded, quiet spot in your garden will do. Feed the birds Of course, birds will flock to your garden if you leave some temptation out. Seeds and bits of fruit will do. If you would like to see if you can invite a specific species into your garden then do some research on what they like to eat and try to cater for that specific bird in the hopes that they find it. Nesting boxes With a variety of nesting boxes available at local garden and pet shops, you are bound to find one that will suite the species you would like to see breeding in your garden. These are just a few ways that you could ensure that birds become regular visitors to your home. Once established, you will enjoy endless hours identifying the different species who land on your doorstep. Information sourced from www.lifeisagarden.co.za.

Once again I am appealing to the people of Irene to collect toys that are in good condition for the children at George Mukarhi Hospital. TSHWANE MASTERS SWIMMERS

Winter Challenge Swim Once again we had a very successful Winter Challenge held at Hillcrest Pool, Hatfield on 20 August 2016. It was glorious sunny day. The temperature of the pool was 26 degrees. This is the fifth year that Tshwane Masters have taken part in this swim to collect as much as they can for Irene Homes. This year, 2016, we managed to raise a total sum of R5 760.00. 120 375 Meters were swum by 57 participants. Masters club swimmers, friends and families all took part. Lucky

draw prizes, donated by Coelacanths Masters Swimming Club were handed out to all who completed their swim. It was wonderful to have 6 enthusiastic swimmers from Irene Homes join us on the day, accompanied by their coach, Maureen. We are very pleased to be able to support Irene Homes each year and will continue to do so. It also encourages our members to get back in the water as the summer season is approaching!

Green Market

Our initiative started about a year ago as a small organic market at the Smuts Museum. The idea was to provide the best natural and organic products and fresh produce to our customers at the best possible prices and directly from the producers. Up until the end of 2015 we operated as a regular market with tables and gazebos, but since the beginning of this year we were fortunate enough to have a permanent structure. We are now open every Wednesday and Saturday, from 9am to 12pm, as a green health shop and market. We support local and handmade quality products:

 raw honey and raw nuts  cold pressed cooking oils  selection of superfoods  cultured foods and drinks (sauerkraut, kefir, kombucha)  locally manufactured artisan cheeses  everything for organic gardening (heirloom seeds, variety of natural composts, fruit trees, small plants and organic seedlings)

 organically grown seasonal veggies

 natural beauty products for face, body and hair from a variety of local brands

 pastured eggs and organic dairy products

 biodegradable cleaning products and much more.

 free range chicken  traditionally baked sourdough breads

What helps us grow and attract returning customers is the fact that we are very selective about the products we offer and we work directly with produc-

ers and farmers. We try our best to accommodate customer’s demand for organic and natural goodies and we introduce new products to our shop every month. We also offer deliveries to those customers who can’t make it during our limited working hours. What sets us apart from other health shops is our location. Our shop/market is situated on the Jan Smuts museum grounds, Irene, Centurion. It is surrounded by the natural beauty of old trees and we are occasionally visited by troops of playful monkeys. We offer a brand new outdoor shopping experience, where the whole family, including pets, are welcome to enjoy the natural park environment. Owners: Hanlie Nel Lily Simeonova Tamarin Phillips

DO YOU FEEL

barking mad?

There is nothing more upsetting or annoying than the neighbours dog whose incessant barking keeps you awake at night. Of course, most likely the owners won’t believe you when you politely ask them to please make a plan because every time they leave, their dog barks till they return! If you have a gorgeous fury friend whom you suspect might just be driving your neighbours barking mad, then perhaps some of the advice we found below might help… It’s unreasonable to think that a dog will never bark! Half the point of having them as pets is to alert us to any potential danger but our dogs can be taught to only bark at the danger and not at every little thing that moves. First order of business is to try to determine why your dog is barking and if so, is there a way to treat it?

Barking is their means of communication and if you listen close enough, you might discover that your dog has different barks for different situations. A territorial/protective bark would be when your pet feels something or someone has entered their territory (your garden!). This bark is generally excessive and becomes louder as the ‘threat’ gets closer. An alarm/fear bark occurs when your dog is startled by a noise or object that catches their attention whether inside your yard or outside the fence. One which most often drives the neighbours mad is the boredom/loneliness bark. Pets left alone for long

periods of time who become bored, sad and express their unhappiness by barking. When your dog is there to greet you as you arrive home, they often display a greeting/play bark. A happy bark accompanied by a waging and often some jumping. As barking is their only means of communication, your dog probably also displays an attention seeking bark – he wants to go outside, play or get a treat. Separation anxiety in dogs is a real thing and separation anxiety/compulsive barking is another one which annoys those living around you. Dogs who display this barking usually like to hear the sound of their own voice and often make repetitive movements such as running in circles and along the fence. Just as babies feel separation anxiety when they aren’t with their moms, some dogs feel their world has come to an end when they are apart from their owner. Barking is their way of calling their owner back and when their owner returns, they feel rewarded for their barking efforts! Now you’ve identified your dog’s way of communication but the boredom/ loneliness and separation anxiety/compulsive barking styles are a problem as most of the time you aren’t around to try to curb this barking – the reason why they are barking in the first place. A few tips to remember when you are at home and your dog barks for no reason are: • Shouting at your dog only stimulates them to bark more

25 as they believe you are joining in. Speak calmly and firmly, don’t shout. • Train your dog to understand the word ‘quiet’. When your dog is barking, say ‘’quiet’’ in a calm, firm voice. Wait until he stops barking and reward him with a treat. Eventually he will understand that if he stops barking when he hears the word ‘’quiet’’, he will get rewarded. Tips to try to get your dog to stop barking when alone include: • Try to tire your dog out before you leave. Take a long walk, play or let him run around in the park to tire him out – a tired dog is a quiet dog. • Should your neighbour mention that your dog barks when you are out, try to correct the problem rather sooner than later. The longer the dog is left to bark whilst you are out, the more ingrained the habit becomes and it harder to break. • Perhaps your pet needs a fury friend to keep him company and busy whilst you are out. • Allowing your dog to stay indoors whilst you are out will lessen the noise impact. • Leave him with lots of toys to keep him busy and tire him out. • When you have some time, try leaving the house as you usually would and wait outside for a few seconds before

returning. If your dog doesn’t bark during this time, reward them, slowly trying to make him feel that he is rewarded for staying quiet whilst you are gone instead of you being the reward itself returning home because he has ‘’called’’ you back! It may take some time (slowly build up the amount of time you wait outside before returning) and practice for him to realise this new way of reward but persevere as it will eventually be better. • If all else fails consult a veterinary behaviourist or an animal behaviourist. There are some products available which claim to help stop barking but they aren’t always effective and could stress your dog out even more. If your neighbour does approach you about your dog’s excessive barking try to understand their frustration. Ask them for patience whilst you try to find a way to curb your dog’s behaviour and assure them that you do take their concerns to heart.
