Two special features in this issue showcase the gorgeous fauna and flora of our area. Lisle Caromba visits a fabulous Irene garden and Louise Labuschagne not only provided us with this issue’s beautiful front cover photo but she also educates us a little more on the indiginous plants found in our surrounds. I’m sure many of you have noticed the building activiy at Irene Farm and African Pride Irene Country Lodge of late. We managed to get an update from The Dairy Cow herself and have put together a breakdown of all the exciting new changes and additions that will take place over the next couple of months.

Please take heed of their advice when going away - this goes a long way to ensuring that your home and valuables are kept safe. If you are staying at home for the holidays please let EBS know should you see or hear anything suspicious. It’s always better to be safe than sorry! As we all enjoy he welcome break and the beautiful surrounds of our village at this time of year, we wish you and your loved ones a blessed festive season and a happy New Year.

CONDOLENCES

Sheila Margaret Oosthuizen (nee Downie) Born 22 September 1915 , died 27 August 2017. Sheila was born at Chaka's Rock in Natal. Her father, a Scot, had been working in India for the British Government and was part of the project to introduce sugar cane farming to South Africa. Her early years were on farms along the coast. She had her senior schooling in Durban and attended a secretarial college after school. She worked in Durban for accountants and then was quick to enlist when WW11 broke out. She was stationed at Natal Command and involved in deciphering and coding. Type to enter text

She met and married Charles at the end of the war. After a short spell in Cape Town they were transferred to Pretoria and as soon as they found the village of Irene were determined to live there for as long as possible. They moved into St Anne's in 1952 and lived there whilst their house in 12 Cromwell Road was built. Surrounded by farmlands the garden was fenced to keep the cows out! They embraced village life; Sheila was keen gardener, both played golf and were part of the Irene School committees, Fetes, the village hall activities, Moths, Brownies & Girl Guides. Sheila, with others, run a soup kitchen at the farm school and then started the vegetable gardens to make it self sufficient. She also started a Girl Guides group there. Charles lived in Irene until his death in 1997. Sheila moved to the GEM village on Smuts farm where she lived until she was 93 and needed frail care. She moved to Masonic Haven in Lynnwood in Pretoria and was there until her death. She is survived by her two daughters; Joy and Cynthia, four grandsons ; Stuart, Craig, Robert & Terrence, six great grandchildren; Aruba, Lexi, Harrison, Charlie, Francesca & Scarlett and by her brother Dennis who is 97 and lives south of Perth in Western Australia. His son Stuart, wife Deborah and two children Gareth and Julia were also residents of Irene for some years.

7 GARANKUWA HOSPITAL In loving memory of Malcolm Blackburn who passed away peacefully on 30 September 2017 Malcolm and Joy spent 26 glorious years together in Irene from 1985 to 2011. Malcolm’s business, Art Pack International, thrived for over 30 years specialising in the packing and shipping of valuable art works. Malcolm was passionate about Clivias which one could see in abundance throughout their garden in East Ave.

CHRISTMAS 2017 Once again I am appealing to the people of Irene to collect toys that are in good condition for the children at George Mukarhi Hospital. For over 30 years I have collected toys to give to the children on Christmas Day. This will be the only gift that the child will probably ever receive. Toys can be dropped off at 19 Bruce Road, Irene. Barbara Tanton

Malcolm and Joy shared a love for all wildlife especially the many birds and bush babies that visited their garden. They could be seen regularly selling their Creature Pots at the Irene Market. Malcolm was always a keen supporter and helper at many of the Irene Art Exhibitions. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Dear ILA Members & IRENE RESIDENTS The festive season is upon us and the recent Carols by Candlelight on The Oval, hosted by Urban Life Church, put us all in the Christmas spirit! Security As we all know, crime at this time of year is always on the rise. Whilst we mainly deal with opportunistic crime during the course of the year, the festive season is synonymous with more brazen incidences including house robberies, attempted hijackings and victims faced with armed assailants. Although we rely heavily on EBS to keep our village crime free, we need to remember that each resident should be vigilant in curbing crime too. Simple things such as ensuring your house alarm is in working order, making sure your ILA account is up to date so that we can offer the best possible service and keeping your eyes peeled for anything suspicious are easy ways to assist. Other important things to consider in an effort to avoid any threatening life situations include: •

Never carry large amounts of cash with you. If you are drawing money

at the bank, carefully keep watch that you aren’t being followed home or to wherever you will be handing the cash over. Try to rather use eft services instead of handling cash. •

If you have expensive jewellery pieces, try not to wear them out to the shops. A new trend has been for criminals to identify valuables worn and then to follow the victim to their next destination where they rob them of their belongings (generally at gunpoint).

Never leave your handbag, wallet, phones, etc, unattended or within clear sight in your vehicle. There are many syndicates working at various robots within the vicinity, who will work together to smash and grab your belongings.

If you or your visitors over the festive season are physically active, please do not cycle or run in remote areas around the village. Rather stay within the village and enjoy the peacefulness of our neighbourhood. If you would prefer to exercise elsewhere, try The Big Red Barn or other nature reserves within the Pretoria area.

13

In view of the recent spate of crime in and around Irene and Ext 2, residents are reminded of the following: • set your alarm every time you leave the house even if for a short walk; • ensure your gate motor is secure; • ask a neighbour to check your property from time-to-time if you are going away; • arrange a house sitter if possible; • do not leave keys with staff. Please also ensure that your alarm does not send out false signals. These are mainly caused by faulty sensors, doors not closing properly or windows left open. False alarms place a huge strain on our reaction service and may cause a delay in reacting to a real crime. Holiday arrangements If you are going away on holiday this festive season, please send an email to Jan Swanepoel and EBS with details as listed below. This way we can ensure that should your house alarm activate, EBS is aware that the house is empty and the reaction officers will be prepared when they respond. You can email Jan and EBS on the

following addresses: jan.swanepoel@irene.co.za elsie@ebssecurity.co.za Please provide details in point form rather than in letter form i.e. name, address, dates, 1st contact, 2nd contact, pet carer, staff members working, access instructions. The information will be easier to capture on the system in this format. Christmas for the Guards A reminder of this special project for our guards. Please see the separate notice in this issue with regards to their wish list. Food items listed may be delivered to The Oval until Wednesday, 20 December 2017. Fresh items may be delivered any time over the Christmas weekend and will be much appreciated by the guards on duty! We wish all ILA Members and residents a blessed festive season and we look forward to welcoming you back to our village in the New Year. Festive greetings

Your ILA

Vivienne and Peter Cownie are the most charming of hosts. I spent a lovely morning in their home. They welcomed me with tea and scones, after which we meandered in the garden. What a joy! I was even given some delicious home-made fig jam and lemon curd upon departure. Made by Peter, nogal! Thank you, both, for a splendid morning. by Lisle Caromba

Halloween

On Friday, 27 October 2017 there were some spooky characters wondering around Irene. Thanks to all the households that participated in our Trick or Treat, the kids had a wonderful time...

Beauty on our doorstep I am passionate and love the grassveld surrounding Irene however, I am concerned about the conservation of some of the rare and exceptional indigenous plants growing here. I would like people to become more aware of our wonderful heritage in the veld that is fast disappearing. The indigenous plants are being plundered to sell next to the road, illegally dumped building material and garden refuse destroys the habitat, and developers bulldozing out all indigenous plants – these beautiful plants are being plundered. Over the years I have found as many as 10 different terrestrial orchids in the grassveld close to Irene. On the cover of this issue is a very special plant that I have been looking out for, for many years, which I happened to find a few weeks ago. Brachystelma Barberae is a very lucky find for indigenous plant lovers. It is extremely difficult, if not impossible, to cultivate but beautiful and quite exceptional. I first saw a similar plant in another location near the Gautrain rail about 12 years ago. I have not been able to locate that one again but have been on the lookout for them. Three weeks ago we went looking for the Crinums that are also most beautiful in the veld and almost stumbled across this unusual beauty! I am an amateur lover of indigenous plants and would love to see a movement of concerned people (i.e. Friends

of the Irene grasslands) to look after and protect the special flowers found in and around our village. I have the most stunning photos of Boophane disticha and many of our ground orchids all found in the grasslands around Irene. We enjoy cycling and I always take photos on our cycle paths. Sadly, they have become less and less through developments and two vicious attacks whilst out cycling on veldpaadjies. Below is a photo of said Crinums I was looking for when I saw the Brachystelma. The Crinum is a Crinum graminicola and they are quite rare - only found in a few locations. I am always amazed at the richness and diversity of veldflowers almost throughout the year. THE EARTHING IN IRENE By Graeme Finbow Around Irene and its environs I do a lot of CoC’s. Part of the CoC is to check the municipal earthing from the House. However, it has been pointed out to me that a lot of the Earth Cables have been taken off our Electricity Poles illegally and sold as scrap for their copper value. They were there for a reason and can result in fires, power outages, loud noises and spurious tripping in the house! Particularly when companies dig trenches next to the property.

combined with the earth. In the new (underground) case a separate earth is combined with the live and neutral in a shielded cable.

Why and who gives a monkeys about the municipal earth? Well SANS 10124-1, the Spec that governs the CoC requires that there is a measurement of the Earth going from a property to the nearest earthing point. If it’s below approximately 2ohms it’s ok. Above it and it won’t deliver enough current to disconnect the house from the municipality. In Irene it can be up to 81 Ohms or several kilometres of cabling before an earth is found. So the municipal trip doesn’t do anything and the house is finally disconnected when the wire melts.

I can measure the earthing (all houses are different) and give advice on what needs to be done for free, so if you feel a bit uneasy about the place give me a call.

Now some houses have old overhead supplies going to the property and newer ones have an underground supply. The older ones have two insulators (a live and a neutral) in the roof to the Meter and then the Distribution Board. In the old case, the neutral is

The municipality should investigate a high earth reading for free. In the case of overhead supplies they should put a new Kiosk (green or metal coloured box) in the street next to the property. However the good news is that if they put a new kiosk in they will have to renew that section’s earth wiring as well.

Graham Finbow is a resident of Irene (20 years+), holds a South African wireman’s licence and is a registered Electrical contractor. His number is 084 742 7689 or 012 667 2532.

have you herd?

The buzz of building activity at Irene Farm and African Pride Irene Country Lodge has been the topic of much conversation in the fields of late. With some of the renovations being revealed as early as December 2017, we thought it was about time we let you all in on what’s happening behind the screens! Being the most popular Farm in the City since 1895, the new developments at Irene Farm are going to make it even more exciting to visit. Boasting a beautiful brand new Irene stone-inspired entrance with an extended car park, visitors will enjoy the farm life atmosphere from the moment they drive into the property. A circle drop-off section at the end of drive will make the farm more accessible for young and old alike. The famous wishing fountain has been moved towards the walkway entrance of the farm where proceeds will continue to be donated to local charities. Being a working dairy farm steeped in history, a history wall is being built behind the fountain filled with interesting facts sharing a story like no other. Renowned for its locally produced delicacies, the Irene Farm shop will reopen as The Deli in early December 2017. Bigger and better, The Deli will not only stock all of the old favourites but additional deli-served items too. Fresh breads, cold meats, cheeses, platters

and pre-cooked meals are just a few of the new offerings. Irene Farm has also branded some of their most favourites with their own stamp of approval. Be sure to look out for the Irene Farm products in The Deli, hand-picked as the best there is. An exciting new extension on The Deck restaurant means that it can now seat up to 90 guests. A tantalising new menu with timeless cafĂŠ classics ensures that a visit to this signature restaurant will make your Irene Farm experience all the more enticing. The Pasture, a pop-up restaurant to the left of the farm will provide undercover seating with the same delicious meal offerings guests have become accustomed to. Still ideal for special occasions and family get-togethers buffet-styled dining can be enjoyed all weekend whilst The Barn Restaurant is being upgraded. Scheduled to re-open in June 2018, The Barn Restaurant will enjoy the same upmarket treatment that all the other features of Irene Farm are enjoying. Once complete, three conference venues offering seating for up to 100 guests will boast the latest technology and comforts ensuring delegates enjoy every minute of attendance. A fixed indoor buffet station will complement the upmarket refurbishment ensuring that every corner of The Barn Restaurant is well enjoyed. The most exciting new feature is a brand new

25 pizza oven offering the opportunity for the calves to enjoy making their own pizzas. Renowned for all the fun the calves have on their visits to the farm, a brand new kids corner is being developed to ensure loads more hours of play. A splish ‘n splash water feature will provide hours of laughter whilst the all-time favourites of jumping castles and jungle gyms will remain. As many of the African Pride Irene Country Lodge guests enjoy a visit to the farm during their stay, an underground subway will be built to link the two properties. With key card access control and golf carts transporting guests through the tunnel, Irene Farm and African Pride Irene Country Lodge are looking forward to a safer passage to either side. Of course, a peace of haven and tranquillity such as African Pride Irene Country Lodge should enjoy the royal treatment too and so this property is enjoying some exciting new developments of its own. Being at the forefront of the lodge, the new reception area is complete. With a more open plan feel including a Silver Rose Lounge and a small meeting room, this newly revamped area complements the welcoming feel guests enjoy on arrival. An array of luxury teas served here adds to the classic elegance African Pride Irene Country Lodge exudes. For the more nostalgic, adventurous type, vintage-style bicycles will be

available for hire to be ridden around the lodge and farm grounds. To the left of the reception area is a stylishly new Rivers Cocktail Bar. With an indoor, under roof and deck seating option, this inviting bar will offer the famous Highveld sunset views that African Pride Irene Country Lodge is known for. Replacing the Lakeside Bar, this new area will offer an extended menu including easy eating lunches and light evening meals. The Meadow Green Restaurant is being extended to allow for additional guests whilst retaining its romantic, luxurious feel. To the right of the restaurant is a gorgeous new conference room with its own deck overlooking the beautiful lake. Seating up to 250 guests, African Pride Irene Country Lodge is looking forward to welcoming existing and new corporate clients to enjoy their state-ofthe-art facilities. Nestled on the edge of the lodge’s forest, 48 new Superior Rooms are currently being built. Relaxing forest facing views and all the creature comforts that the lodge is renowned for, these rooms will complete the extensions on this property. With such exciting developments being completed within the near future, Irene Farm and African Pride Irene Country Lodge are looking forward to welcoming you back to everyone’s favourite -

Destination Irene.
