LIVING IN Peace

The cold weather is upon us and I, for one, am hibernating in the early mornings and late afternoons! During the daytime there is nothing better than taking a stroll around our beautiful village soaking in some much-needed vitamin D. As usual, this issue of Irene Town Crier has some important information contained within. The Stats SA notice allows us to identify the people that might visit your home soon and the ILA Building Guidelines allow those who are busy renovating or adding on to familiarise themselves with what is permitted. We’ve also included the Tshwane list of contact numbers and email addresses for just about any Tshwane related service you may need. An exciting upcoming event is the Father’s Day at The Oval. We are looking forward to seeing many families join in. A big thanks to the volunteers who have arranged this event - their behind-the-scenes hard work doesn’t go unnoticed.

Fibre to the Home is now available in the village so we included a short editorial on just why this latest technology might be beneficial to you - keeping you up to speed! With other charity events happening this month as well as the ever popular Tshwane Youth Theatre shows at the Village Hall, there’s plenty to keep young and old entertained. We hope you are keeping warm, enjoying a good roaring fire in the evenings and some homemade soup. As is with every winter, we have also included a note regarding the winter donations to the guards. If you are able to donate then please do - whilst we are warm inside our guards only have their jackets and little huts to keep the winter cold out. Till next month

A plea to all leaf-blower-owners…

5

Winter is in full swing and the noise from the leaf-blowers is driving us mad! As I write this, it is Saturday afternoon and there are three blowers in use in Lotus Lane, two of them have been going for at least 4 hours, the third has been over six hours. Needless to say, the owners of the houses are not there, or surely they would have put a stop to the constant use. Gardeners just love using leaf-blowers, even when there are scarcely any leaves. Please, please, please… regulate your gardener’s use of the blower! The Taylors

21st century text lingo

Have you ever been so baffled by your teenager’s text message that you’ve felt like you need to know Morse code to decipher it? With fingers typing on their phones, the youth of today live in such a fast-paced world that even their text language has taken to short cuts – the faster you type, the faster you can tell a story, get a response and ‘talk’ to your friends. Yip, it’s a language phenomenon that’s taken over the world and left us ‘older’ generations wondering what the heck they’re talking about!

Town Crier June 2018

We thought we’d print a list of text lingo so that you could easily determine what your offspring is telling you but when we researched it we found that there are over 1 500 chat abbreviations! Far too many to print, so we had to narrow it down to the most popular – ones we are sure you’ve already encountered…

SPCA FUNDRAISER DOES IT AGAIN!

The Irene Association collected a whopping R39 009 from their recent Fundraiser held at the Irene Village Hall. The balance of the goods not sold on the day were handed over to the SPCA where a further R9 875 was raised at their market - making the total collected from R48 884. What an amazing amount! Thanks go to all the beautiful people who helped and donated goods for this worthy cause. A special word of thanks to Barbara Tanton who volunteers hours of her time towards organising and ensuring that this event is always a huge success.

Dear ILA Members & IRENE RESIDENTS Winter is here and we hope you are all keeping warm. Notice to terminate membership Members are to please note that a 2 calendar months’ notice is required, should you be selling your house and wish to cancel your ILA membership. Please let Alyson or Jan know in good time should you sell your home so that we can make contact with the new owners. Members are asked to please brief new owners about the security scheme and advise them on the importance of contributing towards it to ensure its continuation. Our closure is critical for the wellbeing and safety of our residents and we need to preserve it at all costs! be reported to smart meter customer care. Only when there is no power supply to the smart meter, can this be reported on the SMS line. Building, renovations and DIY We receive many complaints about noise late in the evening, over weekends and on Public Holidays. Residents are asked to please be considerate and avoid excessive noise, use of power tools, etc. after hours. Please note the building guidelines in this issue they are based on Tshwane building bylaws. Details of how to report a noise disturbance are published in this issue. Street lights Residents are asked to rather report lights out of order to Jan Swanepoel via email, please jan.swanepoel@irene.co.za. Jan compiles a list every Monday and sends it to Council. We hope this will speed up the process of getting our lights fixed! Your email should be in point form, please, i.e. suburb, street name, pole nos., nearest corner, your name, address and cell number. If reported previously, please include the Reference Number.

Pets Our pleas to ‘collar ‘n tag’ dogs continues to go unheeded! EBS cannot look after dogs at The Oval. Please assist us and the kind residents who pick up stray dogs, by buying a collar and tag for your dog. If the tag keeps coming off - please write your name and cell number on the reverse of the collar. Chipping is great too but it takes time to take a dog to the vet so a collar ID will ensure your pet is returned to you quickly. Please also take steps to prevent dogs from escaping into the street. One way is to fence off the driveway. Winter for the Guards

guards at the gates is not encouraged. Should you wish to donate anything to a particular guard, please consult Jan before doing so. Change of contacts A reminder, please, to only send change of contact details and holiday arrangements to Alyson or Jan email: ilamanager@irene.co.za. Please always give your full name and address in the mail. EBS is not permitted to take instructions over the phone. In closing, the ILA would like to thank all those who attended the recent AGM. We had a record turnout!

Our guards are really feeling the cold at night! Over the years our residents have been extremely generous in providing the guards with coffee, tea, sugar and cremora. Once again, we welcome donations which may be delivered to Jaco, the EBS Manager, at The Oval. Donations of goods Donations of household items to the

THE NEED FOR SPEED!

Anyone else remember the days some 15 years ago when high-speed broadband access had just come onto the market replacing the then very slow dial-up option? Wow, we could suddenly download a song in 10 minutes! What once was considered a luxury has now become an essential part of life! Faster, more reliable, blink our eyes and we have what we want at our fingertips… Not only has it reached our computers, but our phones, iPads and televisions too. One has to wonder, how much faster can our internet connections get! In Irene Village we are fortunate enough to have access to Fibre to the Home (FTTH). The installation and use of optical fibre from a central point directly to our homes, providing us with unprecedented high-speed internet access. It’s the ‘gold standard’ of internet connections. Superfast speeds and enough bandwidth to get loads of gadgets online at once – it’s heaven for any large household.

Computers, iPads, phones, televisions and anything else using data will thank you when they can be used uninterrupted. Not to mention the users themselves! For the businessman its downloading files in a fraction of the time, for the teenager it’s watching a video without it buffering and for other members of the household it’s streaming their favourite TV series whenever they want. Although it’s not a necessity, FTTH is highly recommended if you have three or more people in your household, you have loads of gadgets connected to the internet, you like streaming movies/series, you’re a gamer and you work from home. That pretty much applies to every household with access to FTTH! So folks, FTTH is a must for most. And right now it’s the best on market. But who knows what developments are still coming… Fast forward 15 years and your kids will probably be chatting about the internet back in the day when FTTH was the best there was!

#HipsDontLIe Heather Simmons is an ex-Irene Primary School pupil who is raising funds for a much needed hip replacement. Heather isn’t on a medical aid and she is number 1356 on the waiting list for a hip replacement at Steve Biko Hospital in Pretoria. They can only assist her in 5 to 7 years. In 2010 Heather got a job on a cruise ship and was leaving for Genova in Italy at the end of December. As part of the medical she had routine tests and x-rays. The doctor told her that the ball of her leg had come out of the

Town Crier June 2018

socket and that she needed a hip replacement. She was referred to a physiotherapist, who told her that she was far too young for the operation and that with physio he could give her another 10 to 15 years before the surgery. He helped manage the pain as best he could but it has now become excruciating and surgery can no longer be delayed. Heather’s left leg is showing the same symptoms as her right leg and she is now experiencing chronic pain. Heather has started the #HipsDontLie campaign in an effort to raise funds for her

surgery as well as others that might find themselves in the same situation. Below are the details of a Fundraising Family Picnic. If you aren’t able to attend but would like to financially assist in any way, please find the #HipsDontLie banking details below. #HipsDontLie FNB (FirstRand Bank) Account Number: 62750618377 Branch Code: 260655 Type of Account: Cheque Account

iNDIGENOUS FLOWERS by Louise Labuschagne

I found the Chironia in a marshy area next to a wetland. They are called Chironia palustris - common name ‘Pink stars’ or ‘Bitterwortel’. These plants are clump forming in marshy areas and sprout annually to make a spectacular display of flowers between December and January. I have only ever found these few plants in the area and although they are not on the Red Data List, their habitat is also seriously at risk due to urban development and the pom-pom weed.

The second picture is of the Pelargonium luridum - a lovely plant quite widespread in our grasslands with its delicate colouring blending in with the summer grasses. All of these indigenous plants make up a beautiful display laying secret in our surrounding veld.
