LIVING IN Peace

Thank goodness we are just about ready to say goodbye to winter! No doubt we will get one last cold spell before spring sets in but it’s lovely to see some of the Irene gardens starting to come to life already.

more information on all that the IlA does. Most of which I think many of you will find enlightening and perhaps be perception changing for others. A large part of the ILA’s mandate is the security of our Village so when we received the letter from Mr Chas Lotter telling us the story of how EBS came to his assistance with an emergency situation in his home, we were only too pleased to give these guards the recognition they deserve.

This issue is yet again chock-a-block with great Irene content. From the recent Irene Art Show to the Annual Irene Winter Solstice Polar Bear Swim and the celebration of Alyson’s 70th Birthday, it’s clear that winter hasn’t slowed Irene residents down in any way! With some fun events taking place within the next few weeks - the Irene I finally tracked down a resident Primary School Annual Moonlight Fun whom has been making such great Run, the Gem Village Fete and the changes in our Village that it’s been Intimate Grand Opening of Bakery on noticed by many - Mr Leon Lucas. I Main (whose pumpkin cheesecake met with Leon in the Irene is to die for, by the way!), there’s no Concentration Camp where we reason to stay indoors anymore. chatted about the improvements done to date and future plans. Make Happy (almost) spring - I look forward sure you read the ILA editorial in this to seeing Irene residents enjoying the issue - I often come to the realisation benefits of living in our Village as the that the ILA is not known for all they weather warms up. do behind the scenes. ‘Till next month In issues to come we plan on providing you, the residents, with

YOU SAID IT

Dear Town Crier I write to compliment the performance of the EBS reaction officers who, on the evening of Monday 10 July 2017, attended to an emergency at my home. At approximately 19h00, the gas heater in our lounge caught fire. I managed to get it out of the house and onto the lawn. However, by then, the entire outside of the gas bottle was on fire - even though I had forced my hand into the flame and shut off the valve on the bottle. The bottle continued to burn as the fire had damaged the rubber seals. I was concerned that the fire on the exterior of the gas bottle would heat the contents, increase the internal pressure and make the bottle explode. Therefore, we phoned EBS and asked for help in extinguishing the fire. Within minutes, two vehicles - the armed reaction vehicle and an inspection bakkie - were here. They ran straight through our house and blasted the gas bottle with a fire extinguisher. I need to make the point that, in doing this, they placed themselves at risk. The burning bottle could have exploded at any time! Thanks to their prompt and decisive action, a small nasty incident did not turn into a large one. An explosion would have caused

Town Crier July/Aug 2017

considerable damage, especially since both the casing of the gas bottle and the thin metal frame of the heater would all have turned into instant shrapnel. Not satisfied with having extinguished the fire, the officers insisted on inspecting my hands and wanted to treat my minor burns and cuts. I assured them that the injuries were minor and that some home treatment would fix anything that needed fixing. At our request, they then loaded the gas heater and bottle into their bakkie and took them away for safe disposal. All in all, an impressive performance. Thank you, Chas Lotter Craig Long, EBS Armed Response Manager, is pictured here presenting Certificates of Excellence to the EBS officers who assisted in this emergency.

7 Looking for a good home! I have a Washingtonia Palm tree in my garden, which is out of place. I find myself reluctant to simply cut it down as I am a bit of a tree hugger!

Originating from the Irene Concentration Camp that was established in 1901 during the Anglo Boer-war, The Irene Oval was part of a plan to improve conditions in the camp and lift the morale of the residents. The camp Commandant, Lieutenant Alexander Bruce (RAMC) established The Irene Oval as a sportsfield in the centre of the camp. A cricket pitch was built and the first cricket match was played on 9 November 1901, the birthday of King Edward VII. The Irene Oval was retained as a sportsfield when the Town Planning of Irene was done.

IRENE LANDOWNERS ASSOCIATION BUILDING A STRONGER COMMUNITY A community is defined as a small or large social unit (a group of people) who have something in common such as values or identity. Irene Village has long been known as a community of friendly neighbours who envisage safe, aesthetically pleasing, family lifestyle orientated living – the perfect place to raise a family and live a happy life. Since its inception in the year 2000 the Irene Landowners Association has been a pillar of this community, ensuring first and foremost that our security is of the highest standard and our road closure applications are successful. With that has come the appointment of our Irene Village Manager, Jan Swanepoel, the ILA Administrator, Alyson Lea-Cox and our Accounts lady, Veronica Rowswell. All working hand-in-hand to ensure that our community remains gated, our security remains vigilant and that the aesthetic appeal is maintained, making Irene Village one of the most sought after communities within the greater Centurion area. As the years have past, we have also seen a number of community volunteers offering up their time and expertise to assist the ILA team in additional tasks

that may need funding or effort in order to be completed. In December 2015 one such volunteer and resident of 19 odd years, made a decision to make a visible difference in Irene Village - Leon Lucas. With a passion for gardening and aesthetics, Leon took it upon himself to clean up and beautify the Irene Concentration Camp gardens – a visible difference that many residents have noticed and appreciated. The improvements have included an upgrade to the water system and organic material being added to the garden beds. As Leon and his team, consisting of four men whom he has now created job opportunity for, worked tirelessly on the gardens, so residents started getting more involved too. From a Wild Olive tree donated and planted in the area to other beautiful plants being added to the mix by various residents, Leon is proud to be a part of this initiative. Leon then decided to focus on The Oval. Mowing the lawn around The Oval, tackling the termite problem and cleaning the bins were simple tasks that weren’t being properly attended to. The fixture of some of the poles along

13

the fence thanks to Leon and his team has meant that Irene residents are witnessing continuous efforts to improve the village by one of our very own residents.

project, the ILA, Leon, his team and the assistance of a few other donators meant that the area alongside the N1 Highway and Main Road had a complete ‘facelift’, so to speak.

With the praises of the ILA efforts in ensuring our safe living environment, Leon was pleased when he was approached by Jaco van der Westhuizen, ILA Chairperson, to discuss further projects around Irene Village. Together they set their sights on the open areas in Alexander, Albert and Nelmapius Roads – an effort many of us enjoyed seeing as the trees were pruned, bins were cleaned and the aesthetic appeal of these roads drastically improved. To give an example of the positive response to their efforts, 30 bags of litter were collected in early 2016 alongside Nelmapius and Main Roads. Today, this has dropped to an average of 5 bags on a monthly basis as the cleaner bins have assisted in ensuring litter is disposed of by pedestrians.

Firstly, the Tshwane Town Council agreed to remove the rubble illegally dumped on the side of Main Road. Next, Leon’s team started clearing out the overgrown vegetation revealing pathways that were overgrown and a number of people actually living in the dense veld of that area. Pierre Coetzer from Ndodana Consulting Engineers Sanral and Andre Swart from G4 Civil kindly lent the ILA the use of the concrete blocks we now see along Main Road and Stefanutti Stocks donated the use of the machinery needed to move and put these blocks in place. These efforts have ensured that no further illegal dumping can take place in this area.

Next was the concern of the cable theft and finding ways to deter the vulnerable area alongside Main Road which seemed to be a soft target. In a 10 week

As mentioned earlier, since the inception of Leon’s dedication towards building a better community for all Irene Village residents, there have many more residents coming forward with offers of donations and help. Sean Evans arranged the sponsorship of overalls for

14 Leon’s team from Rand Safety. Darryl has offered to fix the Cemetery gate. And there are numerous other offerings being received from the ILA on a weekly basis. Leon believes a community driven effort towards ensuring Irene Village remains a wonderful place for all of us to live is vital. The efforts of the members of our ILA are often gone without praise and we need to acknowledge that Irene Village would not be the place it is without them. No ILA would mean no road closures. No efforts in the upkeep of street lights, road maintenance and speed control to name but a few. Most importantly, it would mean no security! There are many projects in and around Irene that the ILA are working hard behind the scenes on improving. If you have any suggestions or would like to offer your services in any way, then please do not hesitate to contact them, ila@irene.co.za. It’s time for Irene residents to make the effort to help support and maintain our village feel. We need to build a stronger community – for ourselves and our future generations. Till next month Kind regards

Your ILA

HAPPY 70th BIRTHDAY

On 21 July Alyson Lea-Cox celebrated her 70th birthday.

In gratitude, and appreciation, for all she does for the Irene Landowners Association (and, my, does she work hard) it was decided to give her a surprise birthday party. I am not sure who first came up with the idea, but whoever it was, it was a wonderful idea, which took off like wildfire with many people working hard in advance. Sandra Andersen (Alyson’s neighbour), Cilla Taylor and Di Walker, in particular, jump to mind. Many others joined in the effort. Word was spread, via email, to all and sundry. Although almost every resident in Irene knew about the occasion, somehow the secret was kept against all odds. Alyson’s surprise on entering the Church Hall was tangible. A wonderful time was had by all! Lisle Caromba

ANNUAL IRENE WINTER

SOLSTICE POLAR BEAR SWIM 2017 The annual Irene Winter Solstice Polar Bear Swim was held at 21h00 on Saturday, 1 July at Phillip and Ilse van der Merwe’s home. This was the closest Saturday to the Winter Solstice we could manage, the official start of winter! The Theme remained “Fear is temporary, regret lasts forever.” The air temperature was a bit warmer than last year at 9⁰C and the water was a chilly 11⁰C! Phillip and Ilse were the perfect host and hostess allowing the swimmers and friends to make use of their home. Ghluwein was courtesy of Wendy, again, while ‘Springbokkies’ and OBS sherry were very popular. This was all an attempt to ensure the swimmers had enough Dutch Courage to take the plunge. One of the electrical phases tripped out during the food warming process but that was soon remedied. Lasagne was on the menu for the night. The youngsters had their own party across the road but joined the ‘Golden Oldies’ for the swim. There was a distinct difference in waistlines to be noticed. Most of those at the gathering had no fear but a few had valid doctor’s notes indicating ‘flu’ or similar! A special hot tub was organised for those with heart conditions. However, we noticed that

a few others like Tony and Lawrence took full advantage to warm up after the swim. Philip, Martin and Tony were so filled with the joys of winter that they dived in a few times. Malcolm lost the title of ‘Oldest swimmer’ when Oom Phil decided he was going to have a dip at age 70-ish. And he didn’t even know there a title to be claimed! Thanks to Phillip and Ilse for a great evening. It was agreed to hold next year’s gathering at Theo and Mel’s house down the road! Hope their alterations are finished by then! Au revoir, Malcolm and Wendy Fawkes
