REFLECTING ON 2017 - EDITOR’S LETTER

As always at this time of year, it’s great to look back on all that has been done and achieved. The Board of Directors, HOA, Club Management, Greenkeeper and his team have all worked tirelessly to ensure the aesthetics, security and service on the Estate is of the highest standard.

The Board of Directors together with the HOA Management and staff have ensured that all aspects of keeping the Estate a safe environment is evident in the recent firearm training featured on page 5. Amongst loads of other ‘’behind the scenes’’ initiatives, we can rest assured that our Estate is in good hands.

As our front cover depicts this issue, with our clubhouse in the background, reflection is a beautiful thing.

We wish all our readers a fabulous festive season filled with family cheer, wonderful company and many laughter filled days. With 2018 on our doorstep, we look forward to sharing 2018 with all of you.

This issue is testament to the active golfing community we have on the Estate. From the annual awards evening to the inaugural Festival of Golf week, our clubhouse has been buzzing with both regular and new visitors all enjoying what our Estate has to offer.

Happy holidays

Tracey

ADVANCED TRAINING FOR OUR SECURITY The security at the Estate is our frontline in the protection of our residents, that is foremost the most important task we have, and we do it proudly! The criminal element over the years has become more violent and we are all very well aware of the dangers associated with criminals using weapons. With the recent sequence of events that has happened at our Estate, the increase of crimes that are taking place around neighbouring estates in Centurion and the escalating violent crimes reported, the HOA, Bidvest senior management and Lyttleton Firearm Training Centre came together, to raise the standard of our security! The armed security officers underwent advanced firearm training from a highly qualified instructor with full qualifications and credentials. The end result was that we went from average armed security officers to now having the best qualified armed security officers in Gauteng. They completed the SAQA 123515, demonstrating tactical proficiency with a handgun course.

The Board of Directors were invited to witness the results of this training first hand at an exhibition shooting day, when five randomly selected officers displayed all they had learnt these past few months. The proficiency of the security officers was evident and they displayed their competencies with confidence and professionalism. Not only were the Board of Directors impressed with the outcome of this training as demonstrated but one could also see the sense of pride and self-confidence these officers have gained from completing this course. Security as a whole in the Estate is of utmost importance, the training they receive is to enhance the security capability in their daily functions and to ensure the safety and security of our residents. Further training of the armed security officers will happen on the Estate where they will undergo an intense scenario training to amplify their skills and to build confidence in their work environment. We thank Jean du Plessis from Lyttleton Firearm Training Centre and Bidvest Protea Coin for their efforts to uplift the security standard with the armed security officers, and making a success of it. Your efforts are clearly visible and your commitment is evident.

CHRISTMAS BONUS FOR OUR GUARDS Dear Residents

We can look back at another successful and safe year in our beautiful Estate and I would like to thank the team who make it possible. Our security inside the Estate has been excellent for over 5 years and hopefully this will continue in the years to come. Not a single serious incident within the Estate over this period makes us one of the safest places to live in South Africa. Statistics outside our Estate are quite different as crime has increased substantially everywhere. We remind residents to be aware and look out for criminal elements to avoid being involved in robberies, hi-jacking’s or being followed to your place of residence (which seems to be quite common these days). Make sure you avoid being identified as a possible soft target by these elements: • Avoid wearing expensive jewellery, rings, watches or carrying large amounts of cash on you; • Avoid drawing money at ATM’s and being followed (as mentioned in the past few months, we have a safe place inside the Estate for you to draw cash – at the Clubhouse ATM). Our guards have received additional training to handle critical situations at the entrances to our Estate. At the same time, they have also been trained to avoid any direct confrontation with criminals which could result in innocent people getting hurt. If you end up in any of these situations rather let the criminals take whatever they want as risking your live is not worth any money or valuables. As Director of Security I would like to thank our Estate management and their teams, Bidwest Protea Coin management and everybody involved in protecting our Estate, especially the people protecting us 24 hours every day. Towards the end of every year we ask our residents to contribute towards a Christmas Bonus for the people protecting us for the past 12 months. We normally receive contributions of between R 200.00 and R 3 000.00 from our residents. This results in over R 100 000.00 collected in total and this is paid out as Christmas Bonus’s to the guards in January when they need it most. Last year they received the biggest bonus ever and wouldn’t it be great if we can make it

GOOD NEIGHBOURLINESS The Centurion Residential Estate and Country Club was created as a closed community within the safety of the boundary walls for all owners and residents alike. It is a unique community with a common denominator – the preference for safe, secure estate living in an aesthetically pleasing environment. A lifestyle created not only by the services and amenities provided by the Centurion Homeowners Association, the various boards of directors or the employees of the association, but also by each resident within the community. In order for this community to thrive and in the furtherance of the common good, certain rules have to apply for all, owners and tenants alike. On purchase of your property you willingly and voluntarily joined the Centurion Homeowners Association as a member, subscribing to the lifestyle and image of the Estate. The vision of the Estate appealed to you and you joined a community of other members sharing all of the above and more. To ensure that the community you have joined remains enviable to all, prescriptive rules govern this community, ensuring the continuing of the lifestyle and standards of conduct Centurion Residential Estate and Country Club is widely known for. One of these said rules dictates that all members and residents should at all times extend good neighbourliness to each other. The concept of ‘good neighbourliness’ originates as a general principal of international law, with particular importance in the field of international environmental law. The principle obligates states to try to reconcile their interests with the interests of neighbouring states. All owners and residents of the Centurion Residential Estate and Country Club have a neighbour. ‘Neighbour’ is not only defined strictly as the other party with whom you share a boundary with. ‘Neighbour’ refers to all other members of the community, irrespective of whether owners or tenants. And although everybody considers themselves as king or queen of their own castle, each assuming the property as a personal kingdom with right to rule and govern the castle as he/she deems fit, it is not entirely true. The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines good neighbourliness as: Friendship and co-operation with and non-interference in the internal affairs of another country. A very apt description of good neighbourliness and the intended diplomacy prescribed for interaction between all members of the community. As a community, you are to be friendly to and in co-operation with your neighbour, whilst you are not to interfere with the internal affairs of such neighbour and doing so, both parties try to reconcile their interests with each other. A tall order if you return to your home, tired after a long day, to find that your neighbour has had a new security light installed

which shines directly into your bedroom, dazzling you with its brilliance so that you can read the latest explosive ‘tell-all’ book by just opening the curtains or blinds and making it impossible to sleep. Even the birds, roosting in the tree nearby, engage in song, under the impression that the sun has risen… The obligation to act in terms of good neighbourliness dictates that you shall in a friendly, courteous and non-aggressive manner approach your neighbour to discuss the issue. And in doing so, it shall stand you good to do so as a diplomat negotiating with the neighbouring county. Of course, your neighbour has an equal and corresponding obligation to accept your diplomatic mission and extend the same courtesy to you. Only by doing so can a potentially explosive situation be dealt with calmly, courteously and result in a solution suitable to both parties. ‘Good neighbourliness’ is not limited to matters of dispute or a strange and foreign concept of international law from shores far afield. All South Africans are familiar with the term ‘Ubuntu’- a quality that includes the essential human virtues of compassion and humanity. It is an acknowledgement that, “there is a need for understanding not vengeance, ubuntu not victimization”. The holidays are around the corner and many residents will leave the Estate on a well-deserved holiday. But even if they are at home, it is good neighbourliness to bring their delivered newspaper in from the rain, close the forgotten water sprinklers or even mow the sidewalk whilst you are attending to yours. Forewarn them of the threatening hail storm whilst the cabriolet is parked outside the garage. To drive around carefully and vigilantly within the Estate as children and pets are out and about. The most sought-after commodity, your community, is created and maintained by you as its members. The well-known, repeated adage of “do to others as you would have them do to you”. Neighbourly love might be overestimated by many in the world around you, disregarded and scoffed at, but neighbours are there to stay. Burning their house down (strictly figuratively speaking of course!) puts your own safety at stake. Yet, no unnecessary romance is needed nor required. Old-fashioned good manners, materialised as simple courtesy and decency, extended to all members of the community will not only create harmony and peace for all, but also be the envy of outsiders, whom are not able to achieve such simple basic values within their communities.

FROM THE

CLUB CAPTAIN Our inaugural Festival of Golf, a week-long event comprising of various golf days aimed at hosting not only our members, but also visitors from clubs throughout Gauteng was a great success. Many of the visiting players hadn’t been to Centurion Country Club for a few years and all of them were pleasantly surprised at the vast improvement in the condition of our golf course as well as the clubhouse, especially the food and beverage offering. I believe that the message they will all take back to their home clubs is that ours is a club worth visiting.

that we will continue building on the achievements of this year in 2018, thereby making you proud to be a homeowner and member of Centurion Residential Estate and Country Club. I look forward to seeing you on the fairways and in the clubhouse.

Our golf course has now almost returned to the summer condition we have become accustomed to over the past few years. Our Greenkeeper, Jan Hendrik Duvenhage and his team had to contend with several clean-up operations with more than 125mm of rain falling during October and November last year whilst this year finds us peering at the skies and wondering when the rains will bring relief from the unusually hot and dry Spring. Regardless, we are presented with an immaculately prepared golf course despite the challenges Mother Nature presents us with. Subtle changes on the course, along with the hard work and dedication of our greens staff, have combined to create a significant improvement in the overall aesthetic quality of our golf course.

Monthly Medal – October 2017

This has been a good golf year for Centurion Country Club with a number of notable achievements on both the professional and amateur front. On the professional front Darren Fichardt won the Joburg Open and Kim Williams won the Joburg Ladies Open, a brilliant performance by both of them! Just recently Jacques Kruyswijk finished in second place at the final stage of the European Tour Qualifying School in Spain, thereby earning his card to play on the European Tour in the coming season. Our amateurs have also featured prominently this year: our Scratch League team was victorious in the Gauteng North Union and 3 of our members were chosen to represent the Union in the Premier IPT team - they are Nicholaus Frade, Peetie van der Merwe and Clifford Thompson. Unfortunately Clifford withdrew from the team as he had to go to the United States to start his studies. Nicholas Souranis was chosen to represent Gauteng North in the Junior IPT team and Ettienne Groenewald was selected for the Super Senior IPT team. Although clubs throughout South Africa have experienced declining numbers over the past few years, Centurion Country Club has recorded a slight increase in member numbers, including our corporate members. These statistics support my belief that our committees, management team and staff members are doing an exceptional job at providing the best possible course and clubhouse facilities to our members and guests, both golfers and residents of the Estate. I am proud to be a member of this club and I proudly tell anybody, anywhere, anytime that I am a member of Centurion Country Club. As we near the end of 2017 and enter the holiday season I trust you will enjoy the time you spend with family and friends whether you are travelling or staying at home. I have no doubt

Golf regards

DO YOU FEEL

BARKING MAD? There is nothing more upsetting or annoying than the neighbours dog whose incessant barking keeps you awake at night. Of course, most likely the owners won’t believe you when you politely ask them to please make a plan because every time they leave, their dog barks till they return! If you have a gorgeous fury friend whom you suspect might just be driving your neighbours barking mad, then perhaps some of the advice we found below might help… It’s unreasonable to think that a dog will never bark! Half the point of having them as pets is to alert us to any potential danger but our dogs can be taught to only bark at the danger and not at every little thing that moves. First order of business is to try to determine why your dog is barking and if so, is there a way to treat it? Barking is their means of communication and if you listen close enough, you might discover that your dog has different barks for different situations. A territorial/protective bark would be when your pet feels something or someone has entered their territory (your garden!). This bark is generally excessive and becomes louder as the ‘threat’ gets closer. An alarm/fear bark occurs when your dog is startled by a noise or object that catches their attention whether inside your yard or outside the fence. One which most often drives the neighbours mad is the boredom/loneliness bark. Pets left alone for long periods of time who become bored, sad and express their unhappiness by barking. When your dog is there to greet you as you arrive home, they often display a greeting/play bark. A happy bark accompanied by a waging and often some jumping. As barking is their only means of communication, your dog probably also displays an attention seeking bark – he wants to go outside, play or get a treat.

12

DEC/JAN 2018 | INTERFACE

Separation anxiety in dogs is a real thing and separation anxiety/compulsive barking is another one which annoys those living around you. Dogs who display this barking usually like to hear the sound of their own voice and often make repetitive movements such as running in circles and along the fence. Just as babies feel separation anxiety when they aren’t with their moms, some dogs feel their world has come to an end when they are apart from their owner. Barking is their way of calling their owner back and when their owner returns, they feel rewarded for their barking efforts! Now you’ve identified your dog’s way of communication but the boredom/loneliness and separation anxiety/ compulsive barking styles are a problem as most of the time you aren’t around to try to curb this barking – the reason why they are barking in the first place. A few tips to remember when you are at home and your dog barks for no reason are: •

Shouting at your dog only stimulates them to bark more as they believe you are joining in. Speak calmly and firmly, don’t shout.

Train your dog to understand the word ‘quiet’. When your dog is barking, say ‘’quiet’’ in a calm, firm voice. Wait until he stops barking and reward him with a treat. Eventually he will understand that if he stops barking when he hears th e word ‘’quiet’’, he will get rewarded.

Tips to try to get your dog to stop barking when alone include: •

Try to tire your dog out before you leave. Take a long walk, play or let him run around in the park to tire him out – a tired dog is a quiet dog.

Should your neighbour mention that your dog barks when you are out, try to correct the problem rather sooner than later. The longer the dog is left to bark whilst you are out, the more ingrained the habit becomes and it harder to break.

Perhaps your pet needs a fury friend to keep him company and busy whilst you are out.

Allowing your dog to stay indoors whilst you are out will lessen the noise impact.

Leave him with lots of toys to keep him busy and tire him out.

If all else fails consult a veterinary behaviourist or an animal behaviourist.

When you have some time, try leaving the house as you usually would and wait outside for a few seconds before returning. If your dog doesn’t bark during this time, reward them, slowly trying to make him feel that he is rewarded for staying quiet whilst you are gone instead of you being the reward itself returning home because he has ‘’called’’ you back! It may take some time (slowly build up the amount of time you wait outside before returning) and practice for him to realise this new way of reward but persevere as it will eventually be better.

There are some products available which claim to help stop barking but they aren’t always effective and could stress your dog out even more. If your neighbour does approach you about your dog’s excessive barking try to understand their frustration. Ask them for patience whilst you try to find a way to curb your dog’s behaviour and assure them that you do take their concerns to heart. LADY CAPTAIN’S REPORT Isn’t our golf course looking like it should be on the front cover of a glossy magazine? So green, so picture perfect! We recently held our Ladies Open on 2 November 2017 with a betterball format and our selected theme for this event was ‘Aloha Hawaii’. The ladies all dressed the part and looked absolutely stunning. This is what I love about ladies golf - such a fun enthusiastic bunch they truly are. Our fairways were multi-coloured and even some golf carts were dressed up too. A day like this just wouldn’t happen without good sponsors and I’d, once again, like to thank Growthpoint for the golf clubs that they so generously sponsored to the winners of the Open. Also a special thanks to African Pride Irene Country Lodge for the amazing lucky draw vouchers they sponsored: 4 breakfast vouchers and 4 best dressed vouchers at Camdeboo Day Spa for those lucky ladies who won a free facial. Not to mention the spectacular main prize consisting of accommodation for two with dinner, bed and breakfast. WOW! Another huge thank you. Thank you also to Essie Steinmann of Salon Veleska for 2 cut and blow waves. It’s these kinds of sponsors and their wonderful prizes that keep the ladies coming back to play, to try and win them again and again. OUR WINNERS WERE: 1. Denise and Rhona - 48 points 2. Debra and Hayley - 45 points 3. Anna-Marie and Dawn - 44 points 4. Elize and Rene - 44 points on a count out 5. L Erasmus and H Groenedyk - 43 points on a count out The 2nd to 4th place ladies won exquisite glassware and home décor from Trans Natal Cut Glass Factory. The 5th place ladies won free cut and blow waves at Salon Veleska. So ladies, any of you out there that would like to start playing this wonderful game we have our coach, Kyle, who will have you swinging a club before no time. His contact number is 074 801 3479. Our social ladies, the Early Birds, as we are known, get together on a Thursday morning from 07h30 onwards. Please feel free to pop down or give me a call if there is anything else you would like to know about getting started, my number again 083 728 1090. Yours in golf

CORPORATE CHALLENGE 2017 Centurion Country Club hosts an annual tournament played amongst some of the club’s Corporate Members. This tournament is known as the CCC Corporate Challenge. Monthly league games are played throughout the year whereby the Corporate Member four balls are split into two balls and with a Betterball Stableford competition format, they compete against another corporate’s two ball. The teams compete for a stunning trophy and some cash prizes. A final takes place after the 9 league games are concluded over 36 holes at an away venue. This year, the 7 teams competing played their first round at Koro Creek and the second round at Euphoria Golf Estate in Limpopo. The teams in question were UD Trucks, MSMM Inc, Discovery Financial Services, Sephaku Cement, Regro Fibre, RSA Group and the hosts, Centurion Country Club. A lot of fun was had by all over the two day tournament.

SIKKELS ANNUAL GOLF DAY Saturday, 11 November 2017, saw me hosting my Annual Golf Day for the members of Centurion Country Club. I use this day to say ‘’Thank you’’ to each one of you for your ongoing support at Centurion Country Club. This year I also celebrated my 10th year as Head Professional at Centurion which made this day even more special. All my suppliers sponsored some wonderful prizes for the golfers to fight it out for. After the golf there was a real festive vibe with live music on the patio. Both Kim and Josh were on hand to hand over all the prizes to the winners on the day. I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all well over the Festive Season and all the best for 2018. Regards
