A brand of firsts, Samsonite introduces the newly developed innovative integrated card lock system with the Aerial collection. Combined with its lightness, strength, durability and capacity Aerial could be the ideal companion for all your journeys. The interior lining inside each Aerial piece is easily removable and washable, making clean-up especially convenient whilst on the go. The card lock system works like a hotel key card, and each Aerial suitcase includes a designated credit card-sized key card that easily fits into a wallet or a purse. Locking the suitcase is as simple as sliding the card into the designated slot, which turns the small indicator light red. To unlock the suitcase, simply insert the card and the indicator light will turn green. All Aerial pieces are constructed of an ultra-thin polycarbonate shell which offers the benefits of lightness, strength and durability. The smallest piece in the Aerial collection weighs in at only 2.54 kilograms. Available as a spinner in three sizes, ranging from a cabin size model SP55 to the large SP78 model. Isolate that unwanted noise through the repositioned chambers of Fix for an enhanced musical experience. And if you are carrying the below phone with you, here is your team for the crime.

Casio G-Shock: When Casio launched

its first G-Shock watch in 1983 it changed the notion that a watch is a fragile piece of jewellery that needs to be handled with utmost care. And with its new GB series of watches the brand has taken the experience of wrist fashion to the next level. Few of the features of this series include twin sensor, magnetic resistance, 20-bar water-resistant and twin eye display. The large protective covers make it mud resistant that enables the wearer to invite some gazes with its bright LED display shining at its best.

LG Optimus 3D: Slim exterior, 1500 mAh battery, NOVA display and a 5MP camera, combined with 720p HD screen, makes a perfect team to attract admiration and envy from the onlookers. The superfast 1GHz TI OMAP3 processor makes multitasking as easy as it can get and an impatient user like me can surely take a sigh of relief. The Gesture UI with the revolutionary G-Key offers easy to use commands that enable usage of over 15 operations with simple gestures and a single key. Multi-city business meetings? Vacation with family? Travel always means missing on your gym workout, your diet and sleep routine going haywire and your health thus suffering. Fret not; we give you a quick guide to staying fit on the go. 1. Snacking usually begins right at the airport. Avoid the swanky snack bars and food courts. If needed opt for a sub or a salad.

2. Be wise at the Hotel. They usually come equipped with top-class gyms. Make sure you spend some time there. It’s free of cost. Do a quick circuit workout.

3. Another thing that comes free is the mini-bar. Avoid the inviting sodas, chocolates and other savouries, they are nothing but calorie devils. Opt for the healthy welcome fruit basket instead.

4. Make the best of the terrain you are in. If you are near the ocean then head into the deep waters—turn the ocean into your gym. Swim freestyle, use your legs and arms and burn those calories. If near the mountains, rent a bike and have a cardio blast biking uphill.

5. Take to the roads. When exploring a new place, make sure you walk around. This is not only the best way to get familiar to the smallest of things the city has to offer but also a good way to burn calories.

P

oets often fantasise about songs of the past and it is only in fantasies that echoes of such notes can be heard. Such astonishing works of art where hard rocks have been converted into instruments versifying seven notes of music, actually exist at Hampi, bearing a testimony to our splendid heritage. Situated in the southern state of Karnataka is a small town called Hospet (roughly 350 kms from Bengaluru). Nearly 12 km from Hospet lay remnants of the very famous legendary city of Hampi. If one wants to perceive how time evades through the solitude of a city that was once flourishing, buzzing with life and exhibited such grandeur to be even called “the eastern Rome” by western travelers—then a walk through the avenues of Hampi calls for it. The havelis, the houses, gateways, arches, temples, markets, water tanks, all lay scattered inside a 15-km radius as intact as they would have been in their past glory. Hampi is like a dream; forlorn when its splendour elapsed the slumber. Prospering on the banks of river Tungabhadra, Hampi was the capital city of the prosperous Vijayanagara Empire that was established in the year 1336 AD. It was ruled by the great king Krishnadevraya for the period ranging

Strike these thin pillars and they will sing. The seven notes of music emanate from tough rock structures, the same pillar can sound like a tabla from one point, and mridangam from the other. from 1509 till 1529 AD. During his twenty year reighn. Krishnadevraya made Hampi his capital and the city reached its zenith in terms of art and architecture, trade and foreign relations. It was frequented by travellers, relished by dwellers and envied by invaders. The evidence to this are the edifices left that are magnificent even in their ruins. Fine artistry shown in the Kamal Mahal, Raja ki Tarazu—a stepped baoli (tank) adjoining an underground temple, haathi khaana, Hemakuta complex and various other such structures flaunt the refinement attained in craftsmanship during that era. One particularly captivating feature of Hampi is a neatly constructed haat (market place) that lines the avenue stretching on both sides of the Virupaksha Temple. Similarly small rock cut shops embellish a broad pathway leading to the Temple, making

it look like some locale set for the shooting of a period film. So well preserved are the shops that it really isn’t hard to imagine a picture complete with a busy street, a routine sombre crowd buying necessities from obliging shop-owners. Hampi in fact, has an aura of overhung nostalgia that makes it an ode to be remembered which even time fails to forget. Uniqueness of this erstwhile splendid city has prompted UNESCO to declare it a world Heritage site listed as the ‘group of monuments at Hampi’. Krishnadevraya was as devout a king as he was an admirer of art. He festooned Hampi with beautiful buildings, finely decorated prasadas, pompous faith invoking temples and mandapas adorned with deities depicting pauranik sequences in various postures. One of these several temples is Sri Vittal Swami mandir (dedicated to Lord Krishna). This temple’s backyard has a Rangashaala wherein stand the magical, musical pillars. The Rangashaala (meant for the dances devoted to the deity) comprises of three prasadas—two small and one fairly large. An interesting feature of these quadrilateral prasadas is that they look similar from every angle. They stand on numerous pillars or stambhas starting from the base till roof. Filling the

distance between the top and bottom kalashas of these stambhas are seven thin pillars encircling a central thicker one. Strike these thin pillars and they will sing. The seven notes of music emanate from tough rock structures, reverberating with echo as though emerging from a metal. This can be the eternal music and what else. Wondrous features of these amazing pillars go further, the same pillar can sound like a tabla from one point, and mridangam from the other. Strike a pillar, and vibrations can be felt in the other. Rangshaalas’ every pillar exhibits the marvel man could create with impeccable perfection. These simple stambhas are the solid rock cut common place pillars, and boast nothing of their astonishing ability externally, except for the dents or marks fabricated due to regular testing. It really is an enigma as to what technique could have converted stones into musical instruments; how could have man compelled nature’s hard form to change to a sonorous, melodious configuration, the answer probably rests with the past. The Vittahal Mandir Rangashaala also has two huge stone chariots (actually temples with deities placed inside as riders) established in its premises. These

elegantly crafted chariots have stone horses, stone thrones and stone wheels which can actually move on their axis also carved out of stone. There remains a lot more to be said about the artistic remnants of this ancient city of Hampi. The bewildered eyes of an onlooker may often fail to record every bit of exquisite charm they are treated to. Be it the fantastic buildings soaked in their own melancholy siesta, the scenic serenity complimented by the rocky Tungabhadra banks, or the humble southern environs toning the finer sectors of the heart—everything seems to be just out of this world. To experience the loveliness of Hampi, one has to travel along the cloud covered waters of Tungabhadra; scale the splendid rocky hills of the Deccan plateau, explore the supremely erected temples, dwellings, markets, feel the charisma of this paradise co-constructed by man and nature and then admire our legacy. Reaching there: By train - till Guntakkal Junction. From here via rail or road to Hospet. From hospet to Hampi via road. By Air – till Bengaluru. From here to Guntakkal via bus or taxi.

From its resort islands to remote villages, Fiji is the land of laid back, fun loving, smiling and generous people with a rich culture.

E

very day in this wonderful place starts with the famous “Bula”, a common Fijian greeting used when meeting friends and welcoming guests. Each time that happened, our transition from being their guests to becoming their friends took place. And it set the mood for our vacation to the country which is a stunning archipelago of 322 islands and 500 islets nestled between the South Pacific Ocean and the Koro Sea. Cultural Surprises Fiji is also a country of great cultural diversity and ancient traditions. It draws its culture from a unique blend of Melanesian and Polynesian tradition as well as the influences of European and Indian settlements, dating back to the early 19th century. Our first stop was to the Visitors Bureau for earning a ‘Fellowship of Kava Drinkers’ certificate by sampling the local brew called Kava. A common ceremonial drink, Kava is made from pepper tree root

which is ground down, diluted with water and strained through a cloth. Reputed to calm the day’s stresses and aid peaceful sleep, it was passed around our group in a tanoa, a large wooden bowl carved from Vesi hardwood. I thought it looked like muddy water and after drinking it, I felt lethargic, my tongue tingled and my head went fuzzy as its antidepressant ability got me into a tranquil state. And mind you, Kava is non alcoholic and Fijians consume it like we Indians drink tea or in social gatherings beer. I guess Kava could be responsible to a large extent for the perpetual smiles on Fijian faces and their state of happiness earning Fiji the nickname of the land of smiles. Shortly the effects of Kava wore off and we were back to our exploring selves, eager to take in as much of the local culture as we could. Another common tourist welcome is in the form of Meke, an indigenous dance nar-

rative widely performed across the country. Pronounced ‘mehkay’ we loved the combination of dance and cyclic musical chanting which was the Fijian way of narrating stories of ancient gods or of war victories or everyday life. While women did fan dances, the men were aggressively strong with their spear or club dances transporting us into an era of battle and traditional war music in the form of the steady beating of sticks. It was both menacing and enjoyable. Meke is performed all over the country, with slight variations from region to region in dress, song and dance. Most hotels and resorts organise Fijian cultural nights, where a half hour of Meke and food cooked the traditional way of lovo is prepared. Lovo is an earth underground oven of hot rocks where the food is slow roasted to perfection. Food Lover’s Paradise Fijian cuisine is a delicious mix of influences, with Indian, Chinese and European dishes reinterpreted with a distinct South Pacific flavour. The food utilises Fiji produce of deep sea fish and reef fish, Nadi river clams, eggplant that grows everywhere, wild bananas, mushrooms and fresh herbs that grow all the year round. During our stay we sampled lobster bisque with shaved truffle, roast lamb and lemon tart, cappuccino of local freshwater clam in wild banana cream, blended coconut milk and lemon grass, opakapaka (deep sea snapper) with coconut sauce, wild tomatoes on a mousse of shrimp-flavoured salads made with ota which is a Fiji fern like the New Zealand pikopiko and fresh waloo and kokoda fish salads. Our favorite though was wrasse which is a deep-sea fish with fantastic flavour and texture fillet topped with crab meat resting on a sweet potato cake with island asparagus and a pawpaw and basil butter sauce presented in local pottery and palm wood. Some of the exclusive resorts in Fiji actually have their own boats

and license to fish whenever they require so that the availability, freshness and variety of fish for their guests is maintained. Shop till you Drop Shopping in Fiji is also not a disappointment. Bargaining can be done in Indo-Fijian small shops as most shopkeepers overcharge by almost 30 per cent big stores have fixed rates though and haggling is not advisable. Fiji has bustling shopping strips boasting of a beautiful array of traditional handicrafts such as jewellery, war clubs, pottery, wood carvings, tribal masks, woven home wares like baskets and mats and tapa cloth. Fiji’s Indian influence is obvious in vivid displays of sarees and delicate jewellery while the tropical atmosphere ensures a lively selection of local sarongs and brightly colored shirts. And if you want to make your own kava once back home then the ingredients and the carved tanoa bowls are available throughout the countries shopping markets. Explore and Experience Each island of Fiji is unique and blessed by Mother Nature. South Sea Island is surrounded by crystal clear waters and coral reefs, where snorkeling or a ride beneath the waves in a semi-submersible vessel to see the tropical fish in the surrounding marine sanctuary can be enjoyed. Coral Coast located on the south western side of Viti Levu is a stretch of white sand fringed by tropical rainforest. The 60 k-m stretch of Queens Road is one of the most popular drives of the country while the Sigatoka Sand Dunes National Park, a 650-hectare sand playground with dunes ranging from 20-60 metres in height, is great for sand boarding adventures. Fiji is renowned as ‘The Soft Coral Capital of the World’ and is also home to the ‘Great Astrolabe Reef’. We took the cave tour that started with a 35-minute drive into the picturesque Sigatoka Valley for viewing Fiji’s famous Salad Bowl. A customary kava

ceremony and picnic lunch was followed by a bamboo raft ferrying us across the river for the short walk to the Naihehe Caves. Natural features of these caves included sparkling stalactites, stalagmites, flow stones and underground springs. While the caves were clean and airy, their history of being the fortress to the last pagan tribes of Fiji was somewhat unnerving. Reminders in the form of the priest chamber and a ritual platform gave me goose bumps. In comparison, the Tivua Island day tour on board the ship ‘Ra Marama’ was pleasant. This historic Brigantine rig tall ship was built for the Governor General of Fiji in 1957. Tivua Island is surrounded by a circle of white sandy beach, popular with nesting turtles. For a more exclusive experience, the Castaway Island Day cruise on a luxury high speed catamaran is your chance to spend a day on the idyllic tropical island of Castaway. Only 15 passengers are allowed on the island per day. One can go snorkeling in the crystal clear waters or take a dip in the pool. At lunch a fabulous meal in the beach side restaurant can be relished. For an adreline rush, we decided to try mountain biking on stinger bicycles. These can be rented from the resort itself or arrangements can be made to have them transferred from the resort to the base starting point. The accessories provided include a helmet, water bottles, bike locks and what Fiji promises—lots of fun. And that is exactly what the bike ride delivered. Tradition says that when tourists leave a Fijian island by boat, they pluck a flower from their farewell lei and drop it in the sea. If the flower floats back to shore, you will return. As I was leaving, I wished with all my heart that the red hibiscus would happily head straight for the sandy beach I had just left. Sadly it didn’t but I had memories of Fiji that I would treasure and lots of “Bula” to keep me company for long.

The talk of the town since it opened its doors in the year 2001, JD’s at Radisson Jalandhar has become a hot spot among the resident guests and localities. Located on the first floor, the place exudes a feeling of royalty when one is ushered into the lounge—the most happening place of the city, with its high ceiling, glittering chandeliers and ornate furniture. We were quite impressed when we stepped into the courtyard and saw the seating. This 52 cover bar is the perfect spot for a tempting break, after work drinks or a pre-show snack or maybe even a stop for a great cocktail after dinner. The interiors are bright and vibrant and reflect the European culture and style. A sense of relaxation and comfort envelopes the weary party lover, with some soft lighting and muted colors hues. Simultaneously, the uniquely designed cross walled ceiling of the lounge gives one a feeling of openness and space. Indeed, it is comforting to find that the same atmosphere of comfort and relaxation envelopes the entire

arena. From a casual chic to a party bling, this hip hop place is young at heart and offers a long drink list which is quite innovative. JD’s also features a big screen TV to watch regular sports events, a DJ in the evenings and two pool tables. The paintings which are placed on the walls spot the availability of brands at JD’s. Built in over 2500 square feet, this place is a landmark for the most elite and chic of the Jalandharies. On card is a long list of cocktails and mocktails that JD’s offers including cognac, aperitif and liqueurs. Besides, there is a different variety of gin, vodka, rum, tequila and a wholesome array of Whiskey from all over the world. This lounge also offers a different selection of Wine that adds more flavour and weightage to the place. The cocktails and the mocktails are the USP of JD’s, which are available from 11 a.m to late midnight. Cocktails include Bull Frog—made from an exciting concoction of spirits topped with Red Bull,

Texas Tea—a blend of five spirits topped with Coke, whereas Cocktail Evergreen is a combination of Bacardi, Blue Curaco, dark rum, juice and Ameretto, while Caipiroschka is made from lemon chunks and vodka muddled together. Yellow Bird is blended and is a mixture of Bacardi, crème de banana, Cointreau Galliano and juice, which is a must try. The mocktail section has White Queen on the road which is a muddel of sweet lime chunks, rock salt, chaatmasala, lemon juice on crushed ice and topped with Limca, Jak Greens which is a combination of mint leaves, pineapple chunks, lime juice topped with Lemonade, while Risk of Phoenix that has layers of pineapple and strawberry crush topped with Coke. One must try and experience the expertise of the bar tenders in order to explore more about JD’s. We would not call it casual by any means, but a better version of the classics you’re used to.

The Brits must’ve taken there Saturday nights much lightly and Sunday morning services only too seriously to have concocted the idea of Brunch after the sermons, the big breakfast, or as the French put it, le grand petit déjeuner. Americans too took to the idea and fell in love with it immediately, making it a lifestyle statement. With a plethora of petit dishes and hangover-cure cocktails, and you had a mini-Christmas every Sunday. It was a regular indulgence for years in those time zones before it dropped anchored in India and has come to become a regular feature on the weekend schedules of many a metropolis and its denizens. Come to think of it, what can be better than sauntering to your favourite brunch joint on a lazy winter Sunday afternoon and having hearty chitchats along with some gingerly gossips and lilting jazz music under the bright sun, all held together with a few copas filled with some of the better wines from around the world?

Gagan pursued his love for beverages Down Under. He reserves a soft corner for Australian reds, German Rieslings, and Gewürztraminer.

For long our metros cities were filled with ‘Champagne Brunches’. Why Champagne? It’s simple; it’s not only an icon of luxury and joy but also very conveniently pairs well with anything on the menu. Today, however, times have changed where simplicity is overrated and experimenting is the new approach. Food has been recast in its avant-garde and molecular avatars and so have our drinks, except the wines, of course. While you laze around at your brunch, let the chefs and the sommeliers marry the best of two worlds for you. Here’s what you can try on your next Sunday brunch:

Fratelli Vineyards Sauvignon Blanc, India: A great aperitif and a meal-starter. Perfect for your seafood, white sausage dishes and those green salads you’ve been eyeing on. Truly a great Indian drop. Zardetto Prosecco, Italy: Drink it up with anything you fancy—salads, pies and tarts, salamis, cheese, pastas, roasts, and even new year cake. Prosecco’s the next big thing. They’re simple, fruity, playful, and amicable sparkling wine. Give it a go and you’ll be surprised! Danzante Pinot Grigio, Italy: Italians love their food and wines and even better when they’re married together. Italian Pinot Grigios are a perfect match with mildly spiced white meat dishes, creamy pastas, grills, pizzas, and even Thai delights. Torres Vina Esmeralda, Spain: White Spanish wines are hard to find but this one is a gem to keep. An off-dry wine that suits well for those who adulate keeping their sweet tooth pampered with some modesty. Try it with a pan-seared white fish dish and see the magic. Saint Clair Pinot Noir, New Zealand: A light, refreshing, and flavorsome red with very mild but juicy tannins to marry well with you grilled chicken, pork numbers, and juicy red meat dishes like tajin, lamb chops, carpaccios, and peaking duck. Voila! Georges Duboeuf Beaujolais Villages, France: A special wine pulled out of the French bag. Simple, straightforward, easy-going, animated red wine to share the table with those concoction of ingredients in a stew, juicy ribs and meatballs, and even some spicy dishes. Serve it chilled. Torres De Casta Rosé, Spain: Rosés for one never go out of fashion and even if they ever do, though they do they never let their charm fade off. A wellstructured romantically shaded rosé to lift your mood up and set you well for the wonderful chats along with your nibbles. Tapestry Shiraz, Australia: Rich, spicy, robust, and filled with character, a true Aussie Shiraz. A wine meant for your toughest meats and bar-be-que dishes. Put it next to any smoky spicy dish and leave the rest to it. Vin Opera Lambrusco, Italy: A gem with no substitute. A semi-sparkling, medium-dry, playful, juicy red with a mystifying charm. Try it with anything on the menu or drink it by itself. It surely won’t disappoint. Michele Chiarlo Nivole Moscato d’Asti, Italy: No matter what you eat or drink, finish your meal with a glass of this dessert drop. Wonderful palate filled with orange blossom, grape syrup, and exotic flowers, let the imagination flow. If créme caramel, apple tart, or baked cheesecake is on the menu skipping this one is a gastronomic crime!

The five-star hotels in Delhi are now patronising the art of smoking a cigar. Mirroring this unique fusion of old world charm and an urbane outlook is Cigar Republic, the exclusive cigar lounge at the ITC Maurya, New Delhi. The flagship store for Armenteros, it boasts of a state-of-the-art walk-in humidor and high quality world class cigar accessories placed in baroque cabinets. Travel humidors, cigar cutters, limited edition cigar boxes, elegant ashtrays with cigar holders and exquisite cigar cases jazz up the shelves of cigar Republic. Another place for the cigar aficionado

is the Baronial at the Golfworx which is laid out over an expansive one acre, at Level 4, Ambience Mall, Gurgaon. Of course, this doesn’t come cheap as you’ll need to be a member of the club to get access to this members only cigar bar. For those who want to patronise local cigars, the Trichinopoly cigar should be on top of your list. Also called Trichies or Tritchies, it is a type of cheroot associated with the town of Tiruchirappalli in Tamil Nadu, India. The Trichinopoly cigar was actually manufactured from to-

bacco grown near the town of Dindigul near the present-day Tiruchirappalli and formed one of India’s main items of export during the Victorian period. Sherlock Holmes fans might remember these from Arthur Conan Doyle’s A Study in Scarlet (1887). Holmes correctly deduces that the perpetuator of a gruesome murder had smoked a “Trichinopoly cigar”. When questioned by Dr. Watson about his methods, Holmes replies that the cigar ashes observed at the spot of the murder were “dark in colour and flaky”, as in a Trichinopoly.

Market researchers say rich Indians were merely aping the West where cigar smoking had recently become fashionable. “The rich, and executives with fat expense accounts are forever chasing exclusivity,” said Dorab Sopariwala, a leading market analyst. Cuban cigars happen to be their latest fad.

Cigar facts

The word “cigar” originated from sikar, the Mayan-Indian word for smoking, which became cigarro in Spanish, probably from the Mayan sicar (“to smoke rolled tobacco leaves”) or from the Spanish word cigarra (“grasshopper”). Sigmund Freud, the founder of psychoanalysis, smoked 20 cigars a day, despite health warnings from colleagues. Because of his frequent references to phallic symbolism, it is often claimed that his colleagues challenged him on

the “phallic” shape of the cigar. Freud is supposed to have replied, “Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.” What is the difference between a cigar and a cigarillo? Unlike cigars, cigarillos are wrapped not in paper, but in whole-leaf tobacco. Cigarillos can be found for purchase alone, or in packs. Unlike a cigarette, they are not meant to be inhaled, but rather smoked like a cigar.

with the luxe life and when Marlon Brando appeared as The Godfather, smoking a cigar and making a proposal that no one could deny, it’s glam quotient went through the roof. •Though India was a little slow in catching up with the cigar, the past ten years have seen a phenomenal rise in its popularity.

Cigar buzz

•“Cigar smoking is growing in Delhi. It’s a lifestyle thing,” said Cigar Czar Chetan Seth to BBC news online in an interview almost ten years ago.

•Smoking cigars was always associated

•“Smoking cigars is an old tradition, like wine drinking,” said Seth. He has been busy “coaching” people in the elaborate rituals of cigar smoking—how to cut, roll, light and savour them. He calls it “extending their knowledge”.

•e-cigars: Almost completely nicotine free, these give out no visible smoke, which means the vapourr coming out of it is mostly water vapour and just slightly, even less than 10 per cent nicotine.

Face-to-Face with the Queen of Luxury Interiors in India.

She comes from a formidable lineage being the daughter of one of the country’s finest painters, Satish Gujral and the niece of former Prime Minister IK Gujral. She is also one of the most outstanding design geniuses in the country and the woman behind CASA PARADOX, the luxury interiors store. EDIDA identified and honoured her indigenous talent in the world interiors and applauded her for her latest collection called “Indophile” on an international stage. Owing her artistic values and passion for perfection to her parents she has made a prominent mark across the globe with her work. Meet RASEEL GUJRAL ANSAL as she talks about her personal living space and some tips for the season. 1. You come from a family soaked in talent and creativity, how easy or difficult was it to keep up to the name? My father is an artist and that is my heritage. I do not analyse or question it. I value it. My father during my childhood went from working on canvas to murals to metal sculpture, to architecture, and back to canvas, while my mother went from batik to ceramics to interior design. The whole house had an aura of creativity. They’ve been pretty big shoes to fill but I wanted to create my own identity and started my company Casa Paradox with my husband Navin Ansal. So here I am, designing dreams for my clients.

I like my home to be like a blank canvas, which I can design according to my aesthetic. I need to divest a space of character so that all the things I possess can breathe.

2. Was interior designing always on the cards? As I grew up, my career choices were drama, photography or architecture but none of them happened due to some personal reasons. However, growing up in a creatively driven environment made me end up at the Gujrals’ architectural studio, training for what was to become a career in interior design. In 1995, my husband Navin and I came up with the idea of retail furnishing and that’s how Casa Paradox was

For me, I need to divest a space of character so that all the things I possess can breathe. 4.What do you think is the trend when it comes to home furnishings this season? Khoon Maaf. Married to Nikhil of the designer duo Shantanu & Nikhil, Vidushi Mehra has a modest, yet stylishly impressive wardrobe. We delve deeper into her closet, as well as her mind and discover where she gets her oomph factor from.

What are your favourite brands? In India, Shantanu & Nikhil. Amongst the international brands, I like Kookai and BCBG. What are your favourite shopping destinations? I love shopping in Paris the most. Bombay too has some interesting, unusual things. Do you only invest in brands? I would shop anywhere, ranging from Sarojni Nagar, the streets of Delhi to the handicrafts from the small towns and villages to high street stores. Brand obsession is not synonymous with dressing well. Covering yourself in Gucci and Armani from head to toe often creates an OTT look. I draw a fine line between brands. As ironic as it may sound, I would say I rebel against brands. What, according to you are the closet essentials for winter? A woolen dress, a trench coat, a nice stylish hat, funky stockings, knee-high boots and some interesting stoles and scarves What is the main thing you look for when investing in an outfit? The design element primarily and the fit.

Rod Anker is an internationally acclaimed hairstylist. With almost 20 years of hairstyling experience in Australia and having travelled, worked and shopped throughout Asia for many years moving was a natural progression for Rod. TLF talks to him to find out the hair styling trends and the market in India. Excerpts from the conversation. How was it first arriving in India? I remember landing in India with 24 kilos of personal belongings and nothing else, thinking to myself as the plane landed, “Well this is it, I better make the best of everything that happens from here on. Three and a half years, I am still loving it and now launching my own brand. India is an exciting place to be with everyone developing new markets and capturing the audience. There is a lot of room for improvement in many areas to add value. India’s self sufficient economy is unique.

What is it that you would want to add to the country? What we do lack is training and education in many industries and I think that over time the skill development will change within India and we will see a dramatic move forward for the next generation and this is what I am excited about. What is the one thing that struck you most about the Indian market? It is so open to change. Indian women while having a unique approach to their beauty, are also ready to experi-

Hair Trends 2012 The coming year is all about looking natural. It is not about being overdone; it is about looking and feeling effortless in your look. -Loose knots, hair updone untidyly. -Blown out during the day. -Tonal fusion color technique which is exclusive to rodanker Salon- multi tonal fusion that brings to life a look whilst leaving it looking natural. -Loose Goan waves on longer hair -Dry textured crop -Hair products that give a dry look as opposed to wet look gels. -Color is going to be big in 2012 with less trying to simply cover grey and more trying to enhance their look or features using colour

ment. I don’t think that there is equal amount of independence. However I think this too is changing and will so over time as India opens up. I grew up being told Australia was ‘The lucky Country’ yet I come to India and feel that right now this is the lucky country. How big or small do you think is the ‘Luxury Client’ group in India? When I first arrived in India, I remember so many people telling me India is not ready for luxury and then I was told India won’t know the difference in quality. I stayed true to what I was sent here to do and never faltered in my goals. India is ready, the Indian market does know the difference between mediocre and luxury and can see quality. People want it and I think over time they will demand it. Have you seen it grow in terms of number of clients in the past few years? Three years ago when we arrived there was only several times every few months when I was flown outside Delhi for clients. Now it is a weekly affair. Does this mean the market is growing? No, I don’t think so. I think that the market is becoming aware and the brand is gaining momentum. So would you term yourself as a stylist for the elite? We aim at providing great service. It doesn’t matter if it is the industrialist in Chennai that wants his hair cut after dinner only on a Friday night or the actress in Mumbai who wants her style change done in her apartment as she is always harassed when she travels to the personal assistant who comes into the salon every eight weeks for a trim. We respect everyone the same. I always say—treat rich and powerful people like they are normal and treat normal people like they are rich and powerful, a good way to make people feel special I think. I love what I do and the people that are on this journey with

me who are passionate about hair and making a future for themselves. How different is it to be a stylist here than in any place abroad? Client expectations, staff expectations are very different here. I really think that the fundamentals of what we do is the same in every part of the world. However, saying that to be successful and to have money and fame you have to put in years of hard work and dedication to build your skills. There is a saying “Rome was not built in one day.” It takes time to build the skills and knowledge and if you are persistent at it then eventually it pays off. I have made it to where I am through working consistently hard, putting in the best every day to every client and working for only five companies in my career, this has given me the best opportunities that life has to offer. You are on your way to establishing a brand new salon, tell us about it? The Rodanker brand is still in its infancy stage and whilst we are about to launch our flagship salon at The Claridges Surajkund, we are already operating out of the pre-existing space until we officially open in late Januaury/ early February 2012. The level of expertise that you have grown to expect in the surroundings which will leave you feeling as good as you look. We will not be open on every street corner or in every mall or complex throughout India. However we do have plans for growth but they will be done in time to ensure the brand and experience grows in line with each other. For me it is not about being everything for everyone, rather being providing a list of services that you can deliver in the most exceptional way. Would you be providing any special services that salons elsewhere do not provide?

Rodanker Salon is an international brand that only uses the best products and manpower. We pride ourselves in being known for our colour work both in India and abroad. Our unique style of cutting is all about making the right fit when it comes to your style and hair, working it in the natural flow and movement of your hair and growth to ensure that you have a style that looks good and works regardless of blow drying. What has been your best experience in India? I am constantly taken aback by the hospitality of the Indian people, kind and generous to a fault and not for one minute do I take it for granted. The friendships and relationships I have here today I hope to hold on to them with great respect for many years to come. To be taken into the inner sanctum of many ‘elite’ or ‘powerful’ people, I am always speechless as to how humble they are and how similar we all are in so many ways regardless of wealth, status or political influence. Why did you choose to stick to India and not go back? Having gained momentum here in India and fallen in love with the lifestyle/ culture and people I never saw it as an option to leave. Surely long term we will grow and possibly develop our brand back in Australia also but for now we are concentrating on India. Your personal favourite hair-care tip? The hair is the outfit you wear every day, does it match the rest of your wardrobe? If any of you have ever said, I need my hair long as it looks good when I wear a Sari, please think if you want to stand out and look amazing. Sometimes you have to step outside the “Norm.” True Beauty comes from within.

Initially a candles and painting company, Firefly evolved into a design-oriented venture focusing on applied art and sugar-craft. Firefly gets massive orders every month for wedding cakes, which are almost always above 10 kg in weight and over four tiers high. The protocol is to get a clear idea of what the client wants in a cake and then adding a few creative elements. Pavani feels that the bakery industry in India is still lagging behind as compared to its International counterparts; however, the demand for fondant cakes for weddings is on an all time high, and will only get higher with time. “It will take a while before bakeries and their customers get out of their shells and embrace this drastic change in the cake and sugar craft industry.” Firefly has gained expertise in creating extremely delicate and realistic sugar flowers, and this is what people want on their wedding day. If given a chance to create something traditionally Indian, Pavani says she would go all out with gold embellishments and intricately piped details on cakes in shades of red and burgundy. Indian wedding cakes always require vibrant shades, where as a typical western cake in comparison is more quiet, elegant. One of Firefly’s most memorable creations was a five-tiered cake adorned with over 200 sugar flowers—which comes down to 1500 individually hand-crafted petals. It took 11 days to complete. Classy and elegant, according to Pavani, are two elements most sought after by people ordering wedding cakes. Ivory based cakes with black or burgundy elements are very popular. Strings of pearls, Fleur de lis symbols, the quilted effect and of course, flowers are the most frequently used accessories. This season, Firefly is all set to impress the wedding market with more intricate flower designs, damask stencils and royal icing. Pavani’s own ideal wedding cake? One of Ron Ben-Israel’s creations: a five-tier ivory cake with the most beautiful sugar flowers in all the colours of fall- red, rust, brown, moss green and burgundy.

Le 15 Patisserie, Mumbai

Located in Lower Parel, Mumbai, Le 15 Patisserie doubles up as a central kitchen as well as a centre of learning for culinary arts. Started by Cordon Bleu-trained Pooja Dhingra, the ‘Frenchness’ of the bakery is undeniable in its assortment of pastries, macaroons, tarts and truffles. As she brings her experience of desserts in Paris to Mumbai, wedding cakes too undergo an evolution. During the wedding season, getting as many as seven orders a week, the bakers of Le 15 strive to deliver their best, while keeping the high expectations of the customer in mind. A sketch is always shown to the client for approval before the execution of the creative process. According to Christina, one of their cake bakers, the rage at the moment is for the cake to adhere to the main wedding theme, or to maybe match the lace on the bride’s wedding gown. “This is the time to shower your creativity into the designing of cakes. Gone are the days when one just piled a spray of sugar flowers on a white three-tier cake and called it a wedding cake.” More so in the Indian market, where one

A wedding is a time for celebrations on a grandiose scale. Behind the scenes, one goes into a frenzy picking the perfect locations, the perfect clothes, food, decorations, music and even minute details like the type of glasses to serve the finest wines in. The popping of champagne however remains incomplete without the accompaniment of the perfect cake. Whether it be a three-tiered white frosted cake with tiny figurines or a rich chocolate brown cake with marzipan flowers entwined all around. Le 15 once made an Indian wedding cake in the form of a temple between the tiers held apart by elephants and a Palki cake topped all in sugar. However not everyone opts for a completely traditional cake but demands a fusion sort of look. Paisley piping work, damask prints, using traditional Indian wedding flowers, and more often than not the cake is anything but white; orange, red, yellow fuchsia are the popular base colours. cake. Sheena gives paramount importance to the colour theme. She feels that the traditional tiered wedding cakes are the most popular as people want what you get abroad. Little figures in Indian attires atop a cake would probably be popular internationally. Novelty is the prime factor. For Sheena, the ideal wedding cake is one that has clean lines, is even with no hint of bumps or unevenness. It has to have the perfect finish, no matter what the design is. There is no room for flaws. Also, all the decorations used on the cake should be edible. She however leaves the reins in the hands of the customer; if someone wants a cake replicated, she can do that or come up with her own unique inputs from the top of her head. A lot can be said with a cake. An unusual request she got from a customer was to write a poem he had written for a girl he liked. It was translated into English from his local language and he wanted it to be expressed in icing on a cheekooflavoured cake.

Since then, she has moved to her estate in Coorg and continues to take orders for her exquisite baked goods. Every individual looks for something different in their wedding

As the New Year dawns upon us, it is time to make those resolves that usually break! But these are easy to keep and very beneficial for your health. So make sure you stick to them.

I resolve to de-stress.

Bad stress drains your energy physically, emotionally and mentally if it occurs over an extended period of time. When stressed the body releases Cortisol which increases blood sugar and blood pressure and reduces immune responses , leads to loss of collagen in the skin, stimulates gastric acid secretion , inhibits loss of sodium, acts as a water diuretic and increases the risk of osteoporosis.

I resolve to get active.

One must include at least 30 minutes of walk or workout in their daily routine. Moving your body not only makes you more energetic, helps you stay in shape, it even makes you a positive person.

I resolve to focus on healthy fats. To kill the cholesterol creeps focus on fats like Olive oil, Avocados and Walnuts. These fabulous foods can help lower levels of bad cholesterol.

I resolve to get seven to nine hours of sleep.

The math is simple—the more you sleep, the more you can off-track your hunger hormones. A well rested person is less likely to turn to junk food.

I resolve to tuck in on leafy greens.

Not only do they provide the body with fibre that helps clean the system thus giving you a great skin and a flat tummy, veggies can also undo the damage caused by smoking. According to the American Lung Association, eating 12 servings of greens per month could protect you from lung tumours and cancer.

Tips Soy foods contain natural substances called phytoestrogens, which are thought to have anticancer effects. Soy products like soy milk, tofu and tempeh should constitute your diet. Binge drinkers can stop worrying too much about their liver. A recent study reveals that having four cups of coffee daily can reduce the risk of alcoholic cirrhosis of liver.

We are chasing celebs—on the red carpet, sneaking out of clubs late night, shopping at high fashion districts—basically everywhere. No, we are not the bitter paparazzi but we definitely are interested in the fashion they are flaunting. Wish we had only compliments to give, but certain situations are hard to ignore and giving expression to our discontent sometimes proves more fun. This is our tribute to the divas who have gone red hot, who are missing the oomph, and the few shockers who have left us thinking, WHY? Have a look.

Olivia Pelermo at the British Fashion Awards: the darling of good fashion was a textured beauty in a feathered and beaded frock. While the look reminded us of Emilio Pucci, the designer was Britain’s own Matthew Williamson. The daring accessoriser opted to wear a pair of tiger-striped ankle boots to add a creative twist to her look that worked simply well. Rooney Mara at the New York premiere of her film “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo”: The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo was seen wearing a rather intimidating black dress in black. There was the lucid movement of the net along with sharp angles of visible skin through the cuts that added femininity to Mara’s boyish looks. Her sleek side swept jet black hair and crystal clear face looked ten times gorgeous in this smart turn out. The dress definitely accentuated the beauty of her fit body. Selena Gomez at the American Music Awards: She looks smashing in this champagne coloured Armani gown with a delicate thigh high slit. These young ones are making us proud of their selection. Although still in her teens she looks rather perfect for this mature outfit, carrying it off very well with minimal accessorising. She left many envious of her youth and sex appeal.

Miley Cyrus at the CNN heroes’ tribute: This is the sweet Hanna Montana who has obtrusively grown up. We rather not discuss this further before you call us vulgar. As a lover of Roberto Cavalli, it’s not a surprise Miley donned a soft yellow chiffon dress by the designer. The bodice, accentuates the pretty woman’s curves with the wide deep neck and empire waistline. The pale yellow compliments her skin and hair colour. Thumbs up Miley, you look perfect.

Emma Watson at the premier of ‘My week with Marilyn’: We think she’s incapable of ending in another category other than ‘the good’. Why? Because she is genetically stylish, which is a rare gift! Watson was seen in a top with fitted bodice flaring gracefully at the waist. The top was embellished at the chest and shoulders with shimmering white threads. The side swept pixie hair, flaring at the waist, all the shimmer, black peep toe pumps and animal print clutch added urban touch to the contemporary skirt and top look.

Joely Richardson at ‘The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo Premiere’: Joely has the perfect blond hair and body type to make this simple classy dark green sheath dress look brilliant. We only wish she had excluded the neck piece and worn better pumps! One shouldn’t style a dress if their own body parts can serve as better acessories!

Poppy Delevigne at the British Fashion Awards: She looked like a piece of art on the red carpet in an embroidered column dress with rich feathered accents by designer Matthew Williamson. The gown featured muted neon stitching over a nude fabric. Her disheveled side swept braid added the fun element yet it all looks a bit incomplete and you search for that one thing that could’ve completed the look - an avante garde custom made clutch. Sorry poppy your gown is undoubtedly beautiful but you missed out on the clutch.

Heidi Klum at the American Music Awards: Heidi Klum wore a crisp metallic Giles Deacon dress with a laser cut design to reveal a purple bodysuit underneath. The glamazon usually doesn’t go wrong with her look but this time we were a bit disappointed. Her hairstyle spoilt it all. The flat greasy curls reminded us of a random high school English teacher. A high neat simple ponytail would’ve taken this futuristic ensemble to another level altogether.

Alexa chung: The ‘It’ Girl Alexa Chung, who never seizes to surprise us with her quirky style statements was precariously balancing between the good and the ok! 60’s inspired - white satin sheath dress with an intricately beaded bust by Christopher Kane looked just perfect. While the purposely messy bob, that initially looked funky, looked like a haircut gone bad. Well Robert Pattinson has been flaunting the unkempt look without looking like “I don’t like to pay for my haircuts, hence cut them myself”. You should get the hint now Alexa.

Kate moss at the British Fashion Awards: Most of our energy was drained after complaining about Sonam and Frieda when we saw Kate Moss. Why Kate? The fashion icon who usually turns heads everywhere she goes, came in an awkward fish net attire worn over a nude slip dress. She looks much older, primitive and ghastly out of clothes. Top shop must have considered shutting her label after this catastrophe.

FREE DRINKS AND FREE ENTRY FOR WOMAN. These two ladies certainly threw this statement around generously at the American Music Awards. Audrina Patridge(left) looks more like a cougar here while Jennifer Hudson looks like the women who gives free cigarette packets to party people to promote the new brand.

You must have heard about Chanel’s ‘Paris Bombay’ show by now. Come on! It’s been all over the paper like Anil Kapoor’s 40 second role in MI -4. The common link here is Anil’s daughter - Sonam, who loves Paris and tweeted continuously about her famous Cannes visit of previous year( not showing off of course)and Mumbai based Slumdog Millionaire fame Freida Pinto. What happened when we saw this human ‘Paris Bombay’ connection - the exact opposite of pity and benevolence? Both looked like they wanted to attend the Halloween but at the last minute jumped right inside the show premises. Sonam seemed rather confused - should I be Paris or Bombay? Back at home she dresses like a gifted fashionista but goes cocky as soon as she steps out of her country. Not everyone is gaga Miss Kapoor! Same goes for Frieda Pinto whose fashion sense is worth adopting. She looked quite disoriented and crazy in an attire that looks like picked up from the charity flea.

Kardashian family and the slave labor saga The Kardashian family is preparing for war—gearing up to unleash a legal attack on everyone who claimed their clothing line is manufactured in child slave labour sweat shops in China. Charles Kernaghan, Executive Director of the Institute for Global Labour and Human Rights, had accused the family for producing the clothing line in factories in China using child labour. He later admitted he hadn’t personally been to the factory that produced their clothing but was quite sure about the news. Well the Kardashian’s should be more than thankful to Charles for giving them a reason to make the headlines again. Isn’t that what they are looking for all the time?

Double Trouble Blake Lively and out law Lindsay Lohan have landed up in negative publicity pole for looking older than their age. That’s a poor start to the year. Lively, 24 looks 30 while Lohan, 25 looks 35! What is happening girls ?

Jolie’s Directorial Debut Angelina Jolie didn’t pick an easy subject matter for her directorial debut. The Oscar-winning actress wrote and directed In the Land of Blood and Honey, a drama about a forbidden romance set against the backdrop of the Bosnian war in the mid-90s. Jolie doesn’t appear in the film, which will screen in the native Bosnian language and feature subtitles. It focuses on the brutalities of war which are sometimes awful to bear. The subject often gets too tragic and serious and one wonders if Jolie will have to hold people’s hand and force them into the theatre. It’s not your fault Angelina but nowadays people are so stuck in their own tragedies that a war tragedy is often avoided.

The Dark Horse Martha Marcy May Marlene, the little film that made big waves at the Sundance Film Festival stars Elizabeth Olsen, sister of Mary-Kate and Ashley, as a cult member who flees the group but remains haunted by its leader (John Hawkes). While the director Sean Durkin took home the best director prize for the film at Sundance in January, Olsen has been heralded as a young actress to watch filling her bag with treats such as new movie projects, one against Dakota Fanning ! Unlike Mary-Kate and Ashley, this sibling is walking alone, swiftly and without much fuss on the road to stardom.

And the money rolls in Screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg got an extra gift this holiday season. With The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1 continuing its blockbuster run in theaters around the world Rosenberg has become the highest-grossing female screenwriter in Hollywood, with more than $2.56 billion in worldwide revenue. That is quite an achievement, congratulations Melissa !

Baby One More Time Yes Britney Spears is engaged to Jason Trawick, a talent manager and her former agent. Her tweets on Twitter were conclusive evidences of the fairytale affair! She joyously tweeted, “OMG. Last night Jason surprised me with the one gift I’ve been waiting for. Can’t wait to show you! SO SO SO excited!!!! Xxo.” Isnt she a doll? Not only this she added a few hours later,“Still glowing! About to jump on a plane to Planet Hollywood in Vegas. Throwing a Bday Party for Jason at Chateau Night Club. So fun. Xxoo.” We were wondering whether ex Mr. Spears (Kevin Federline, not the other one !!) was following the ecstatic tweets ? Hope you liked the 3-plus carat solitaire surrounded by set diamonds that Britney proudly showed off.

Happy New Year to Pattinson maniacs YES!! Females of the world and the fairies in heaven, who were dying to see a ‘bad’ Robert, have something to look forward to this year. 2012 will receive Cosmopolis, Pattinson’s new movie in which he plays a multimillionaire named Eric Packer who loses incredible amounts of money for his clients by betting against the rise of the Yen throughout the day. Not only this he will be cheating on his wife too, quite contrary to his smash hit character Edward Cullen, the lover vampire of The Twilight series. The film is a cinematic adaptation of the 13th novel of Don DeLillo. The director is all praise for RPat and say’s, “He’s simply incredible in it.” Whoa, the suited-booted pistol-bearer - Mr Pattinson is making us impatient. FYI Robert flaunts a new hairdo, getting rid of the extra hair around his temples and ears.

To steal a line from a classic, “Anand Mara nahin, Anand marte nahin.”

D

haram Dev Pishorimal Ānand is no more but it is hard to come to terms with his absence. He was someone that Jigar would describe as the zindagi in zindagi; the life in life. More than his film career, it was his passion for life that defined him. His life was an endorsement of hope, of optimism, of the belief that life is what we make of it. We are who we think we are. How else can you explain a man who was born in the 20s but was more enthusiastic about life than generations that came after him? He was tireless and showed us that if our spirit is the most powerful limb in our body, we will walk far, regardless of who is with us or against us. Who is laughing, jeering and mocking our journey. Dev Anand never stopped walking. The world, said

Mahesh Bhatt recently, has more spectators than performers. Dev Anand was never a spectator. He always created. Sometimes with success, sometimes without it, sometimes with stubborn selfbelief in a vision that was failed by execution but he was unstoppable as was demonstrated by his recent film Charge Sheet. He brought to Hindi cinema, a certain urban metrosexuality far before the term was even coined. He never ripped open his shirt to underscore his masculinity. He just had to look deep in your eyes, strum your longings with Sahir’s Ye Raat Ye Chandni Phir Kahan and that was enough for any woman to burst out of her inhibitions and walk up to him as if in trance. He was wiry, almost thin, with an air of careful grooming, a sense of self that in the years to come would

translate itself in mannerisms only he could carry off. He walked jauntily to a tune that no one but he could hear. His smile was full of unspoken sensual mischief. His frown had the quality of sullen defiance that put a question mark against pain, as if to say, “Life is more than this. Much more.” His voice was a lazy drawl. And that nod became his signature note. Yes, he tried at times to translate Gregory Peck in the Indian context but that could have been because his fabled lady love Suraiyya, who many term as his one true love, idolised Peck and he perhaps wanted to show her that he could be one better. He was also enormously intelligent. Born in September 26, 1923 in Gurdaspur district, he was well read, an MA in English and based his production Tere Mere

Sapne on AJ Cronin’s medical classic, The Citadel and later produced RK Narayan’s seminal The Guide as a classic we have not stopped loving. He was articulate and in his autobiography Romancing With Life, he outlined his highs and lows as an actor and a man. But without ever sounding despondent. He was also one of the few creative voices in the 70s who openly opposed Emergency. Even while working in a Military censor office for a salary of Rs 160, Dev Anand was a dreamer of impossible miracles. In 1946, he made his debut in Prabhat Talkies’ Hum Ek Hain . Bombay Talkies’ Ziddi turned him into a hot prospect but it was Guru Dutt’s Baazi that established him as a hero of an ‘alag sur.’ In 1949, his banner Navketan was born and was thrumming with his ideas till the end of his life. As a director, he pushed boundaries of permissiveness with films like Hare Rama Hare Krishna and Des Pardes but nothing Dev Anand ever did in his prime was

Though his later films really did no justice to his talent and integrity as a film maker, he never made a film that in some way did not reflect his belief in himself. In the end, he was making films for himself but still without fear or an iota of apology. He never faked humility. He always lived and worked by his rules. He wanted to die with his boots on and he almost did. Nothing fazed him. Not the critics. Not the empty halls. Not the parodies. Not his age. He was often accused of being trapped

in his image but in his long career, he was sometimes a shayar, sometimes a street smart Johnny, a gambler, a guide, a taxi driver. He was the languid youthfulness of the 50s, the swagger of the 60s, and in the 70s, the mixed up voice of Des and Pardes, a man who made a Hindi film heroine smoke pot, wear a bikini and grow sexually active. It was only in the 80s and the 90s that he became a caricature of himself but his body of work as an actor, producer and director is so vast that we are still singing, “Abhi Na Jao Chod Kar” with tireless emotion. Like one of Dev Anand’ s most memorable co stars, Waheeda Rehman said, “He never criticised anyone. He had no time or energy to spend on negativity, on losses. He was too happy in his own world. He was like an Eveready Battery always on the go.” Maybe Sahir wrote these lines for Dev Saab alone, “Jo mil gaya usi ko muqaddar samajh liya..jo kho gaya main usko bhulata chala gaya.”

Eight films you must get your hands on before the Golden Globe awards and the 84th Academy Awards.

The Artist

The Artist is a black and white, silent, romantic French film directed by Michel Hazanavicius, starring Jean Dujardin and BĂŠrĂŠnice Bejo. The story takes place in Hollywood between 1927 and 1932 and focuses on a declining male film star and a rising female actor, as silent cinema grows out of fashion and is replaced by the talkies. The film itself is a silent film. It has received wide praise from critics and many accolades. Dujardin won the Best Actor Award at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival, where the film premiered, receiving a ten-minute standing ovation. The film has six Golden Globe nominations, the most of 2011. TLF loved it and if you are the one who absorbs the details of everything fine and gets nostalgic about the old world we left behind, you will love it too. .

The Help

The Help, a runaway hit, became a box office success with grossings of $201.9 million against its budget of $25 million. It is a 2011 comedy drama film adaptation of Kathryn Stockett’s novel of the same name. The film is an ensemble piece about a young white woman, Eugenia “Skeeter” Phelan, and her relationship with two black maids during Civil Rights era America in the early 1960s. Skeeter is a journalist who decides to write a controversial book from the point of view of the maids (known as the Help), exposing the racism they are faced with as they work for white families. Best Actor wins from the National Board of Review, the New York Film Critics Circle, and the Los Angeles Film Critics Association prove The Help was as much as fan favorite as it is a critics’darling.

Hugo .

In this fanciful adventure, a lonely Parisian orphan (Asa Butterfield) who lives in a train station during the ‘30s makes friend with a precocious young girl (Chlöe Grace Moretz). Together, they uncover a life-changing secret about her godfather, a once famous film director. It is giving The Artist a serious competition in the run for the Best Movie at the Academy Awards. Reputed director Martin Scorsese has baffled the audience with his creative direction. This love letter to silent cinema is gorgeously photographed (in 3D, no less!) and deftly navigates a fine line between whimsical and haunting. Not surprisingly, it took home the National Board of Review’s Best Picture endorsement, in addition to Globe nods for Best Picture and Best Director.

The Descendants

Directed by Alexander Payne (Sideways), this family dramedy stars George Clooney as an absentee father who must raise his daughters (Amara Miller and Shailene Woodley, both in breakout roles) after his cheating wife (Patricia Hastie) suffers a coma-inducing accident. It is worth watching because George Clooney has out run his previous Academy Award winning performances. It’s this year’s The Kids Are All Right with emphasis on smart dialogue and nuanced performances; this indie has become a favourite with from critics. The movie has been nominated for many awards in Golden Globe and is definitely securing a space at the Oscars as well.

Extremely Loud Incredibly Close

Emotional fluency and literary pretense go hand in hand in Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close, an affecting, well acted tale of 9/11 trauma and a boy’s effort to piece things together after his father’s death. A self-conscious prestige project with weighty thematic elements, a tony literary pedigree and top-tier actors, director Stephen Daldry’s fourth film is dominated by the performance of a 13-year-old with no previous acting experience, Thomas Horn, who enables his character’s pinball intellect and inchoate emotions to pulse through every scene.

50/50

A 27-year-old (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) and his best friend (Seth Rogen) grapple with the former’s dating life in light of his cancer diagnosis. It is a comedy drama which has a way with making emotional moments not seemed contrived, but welcomed. This is actually the second cancer-movie Rogen has done (the other one being Funny People, costarring Adam Sandler). But unlike that more ham-fisted attempt at melancholic humor, 50/50 is truly a relaxed comedy with a heart and soul--based on the real-life travails of Rogen’s friend (and the film’s scripter) Will Reiser. After two surprise Golden Globe nominations--one of them for best comedy--this goofy musing on mortality is suddenly a viable Oscar movie .

Midnight in Paris

The plot is simple—magical occurrences in Paris prompt an American writer (Owen Wilson) to reconsider his relationship with his fiancée (Rachel McAdams). But the fact that it has been directed by Woody Allen, who is a regular in the run for Academy Awards, and has been directing drama like one never directed before makes it a must watch for seekers of romance. It’s a critical hit of 2011 that pulled in $143 million-making it Allen’s highest-grossing film ever. One Screen Actors Guild and four Golden Globe nominations could give the simple romantic film the push it needs-especially if it picks up a few wins.

Ides of March

A naive campaign manager (Ryan Gosling) for a presidential hopeful (George Clooney), navigates the seedy side of politics, while still trying to retain his ethics. It’s worth watching because of the superb performance by George Clooney and The Notebook stars Ryan Gosling. Clooney starred in, produced, directed, and co-wrote the screenplay for Ides (and got Golden Globe nominations for doing the latter three). The actors are eye candies so even if it is not in your taste it’ll be a visual treat.

Bindu Maira is a renowned tarrot and crystal healer. She belives crystals work wonders with affirmation.

ARIES The New Year begins with a promise that financial and business success will beckon as a given situation will work out in the end. If in a relationship, it’s too early to be making decisions and commitments but keep on with the quest— your horizons are set to expand. A new partnership at work brings in additional income. Clear communication, cooperation and loyalty are the buzz words that make you tick at this time. Joint pains or an injury to the wrist or hands could give you trouble. Keyword- Rationalisation Crystal- Citrine Affirmation- ‘I think and communicate clearly synthesising information from all levels of my being’

TAURUS Unexpected and sudden problems crop up on the work front. If you scratch beneath the surface however, you will realise that the cause lies in past negligence on your part to have nipped it in the bud. Your overall income remains unaffected. A new love interest ignites your passions. An existing relationship brings commitment. Your energy levels are high and a new exercise regime could well be the order of the day. Keyword- Grounded and adept Crystal- Tiger’s eye (will help with cor-

rect decision making) Affirmation- ‘My personal power comes from my belief in my purpose and my strength’

GEMINI Your head and heart are saying different things to you and unless you don’t stop and do a self examination and re-evaluation of where you are in your career, why you are there, what it’s really doing for you and what you really desire, you will remain blocked and dead locked in a stagnant situation. Go ahead and be decisive and allow this energy to filter into all aspects of your life. Take time out, connect with yourself and your inner wisdom. Key words- Decisiveness Crystal- Malachite (can help you break free from limitations related to fear, guilt or self denial) Affirmation- ‘I have the courage and determination to break through all fear’

CANCER Good news comes your way bringing with it opportunities of a new venture or new experience. Do not allow mediocrity, in effort at work, pettiness or weakness to prevent you from actively getting down to the nitty-gritty of things as what seems like something small has the potential to grow into something big.

The festive season stretches this month for you—care needs to be taken as excess and overindulgence in food or drink could lead to stomach upsets and fatigue and exhaustion. On the whole a balanced month where you freely flow between the different demands of your life—a new love interest could appear on your horizon. Key words- Balance and moderation Crystal- Lepidolite (helps you take events in your stride) Affirmation- ‘I shift my focus from stimulation to balance in order to enjoy my life more fully.’

LEO Your cards urge you to Rest, Recycle, Recuperate, Re-grow and Recover. All these require action-you won’t achieve them just by sitting still long enough. For some, recovery means an energetic game of squash, for others its candles and incense- discover what works best for you. Work is flowing and doesn’t seem to need you that much at this time so take advantage to focus on yourself for now. A love relationship moves well. A house move could prove expensive. Keyword- Recharge Crystal- Amber (Teaches you to walk lightly and find the joy in each step of the way) Affirmation- ‘I build my physical vitality through lightness of spirit’

VIRGO You feel like you are in a gray zone at work—a lack of clarity or transparency brings with it fears and a definite need to watch your step. This is not the time to be trusting or naive. Ask questions and demand answers within your rights and go with what you see- not what you feel or you could get tripped up. It’s also time to remove the dead wood in a relationship and set your spirit free. Address the issues one step at a time. Acidity could cause you discomfort. Keyword- Conscious control Crystal- Garnet (provides a sense of rootedness, bringing a sense of expanding strength in our capacity to reach a goal Affirmation- ‘I affirm my reservoir of inner strength and I act with practicality’

LIBRA Partnerships-forward movement expansion of horizons, all looking good on the work front but you could end up feeling in a state of burnout due to the hectic pace of work which will leave you little time for your family, friends and personal relationships. Do not neglect the ‘me time’ and the ‘our time’- it’s not worth the toll it takes. Remain optimistic and patient as a fruit must ripen before it is plucked. The cards also ask the question ‘What are you doing to take care of your body?’ Sunlight, exercise and a detox programme are advised. Keyword- Vitality Crystal- Orange sunstone Affirmation- ‘There is no limit to how much I can do’

SCORPIO Some stressful moments at work make you anxious and you worry, possibly disproportionately to the challenges you face. It could make you demanding and a tad over-bearing with your loved ones. Go easy on them as well as yourself. Setting up systems within which you function and adhering to rules and regulation will be of great help. Take heart because help is at hand in the form of counsel and support from someone you can trust.

Repayment of loans and leaving of debts will not happen in one swoopone step at a time. Key word- Love Crystal- Rose Quartz (encourages you to be more light headed) Affirmation- ‘I delight in play and pleasure’

SAGGITARIUS Expect some major changes in your professional life which is going to be difficult to handle. Someone could let you down badly or your personal sense of dissatisfaction could cause you to shut shop or simply decide to move on to something new. Health needs care as your back could give trouble. Deceit and false flattery could pull you into a relationship that is not true to the heart. With all that you are dealing with, you manage to manoeuvre your money successfully to serve you well. Keyword- Abundance Crystal- Aventurine (helps during transitions from functioning in one role to being casted upon to act in different ways) Affirmation- ‘I expand my vision of who I can be’

CAPRICORN You will make a breakthrough with something you have been struggling with at work. What you must do is clear but comes up as a challenge and one which you may choose to let go as the effort is too hard. Time is running out so get pro-active or you could lose an opportunity. If in a close relationship you go through a period of withdrawal and introspection. Travel is on the cards- but in connection with work financial gain and money. It may take you to new places leading you in new directions. Keyword- Faith Crystal- Spinel (re-affirms your resourcefulness when you are holding back from committing yourself to a project or service) Affirmation- ‘I am resourceful and capable of finishing what I start’

AQUARIUS Expect a lot of movement this month with travel, plans and projects. That

car you have been eyeing for a while could well come home around now. You feel confident, charged up and in control with all the demands being made on you. You are crystal clear in your thoughts and actions but be careful you don’t end up driving too hardshoulder pain or one sided headaches could bother you. A house move could get delayed. You could end up feeling a little out of sync emotionally. Money is looking good. Key word: Discipline Crystal: Kyanite Affirmation: ‘My physical body is a sacred temple, built of pure love.’

PISCES You go through a period of apathy- the passions with which you generally operate have lost their fervour. Not a good time to accept a proposal as you feel bored and uninspired as a result of which you find yourself skimming on the surface of things at work and projects. Emotionally—the end of one cycle—perhaps the beginning of a new chapter or relationship in your life. This could be a month of big expenses on family, home and children so budget well. Good health indicated. Crystal- Dioptase Affirmation- ‘I accept how I am and the choices I have made’

ours and shapes without any inhibitions through their choice in fashion jewellery.” “This collection is edgy, bright and preppy and truly reflects what Swarovski’s collection Swing, Sing and Shine stands for. This event was indeed a great opportunity to connect with a younger audience and exhibit our Catwalk collection from Paris with statement jewelery”, says Ruchita Sharma, Marketing Operations Manager for Swarovski Consumer Goods Division. The collection Swarovski’s Swing, Sing and Shine collection is a tribute to vintage styling and an ode to the lights, camera and action of the entertainment world—a topic that has been intrinsically linked to the company for many decades. Creative Director Nathalie Colin uses the Spring/Summer 2012 jewelery and accessory collection to tell the story of a multifaceted young woman as she evolves from a student to that of a starlet becoming accustomed to fame and the limelight.

92 I Last Word

Ritu Dalmia, one of India’s most celebrated chefs has recently launched her second book- Travelling Diva. Following the series ‘Italian Khana’ this cookbook does not stick to one particular cuisine, but is a collection of an assortment of cuisine genres, ‘from around the world,’ as the cover says. Known for her Italian restaurant ‘Diva’, located in Greater Kailash II (New Delhi), through her latest launch, she shows us a whole new aspect to her culinary genius. More about the book from the author herself. Q1. What is the concept behind Travelling Diva? Travelling Diva is a documentation of my recipes which I’ve collected while travelling, eating with friends, memories of chefs that have made an impact on me. The book is a part of my food diary. Urban Indians love to cook and travel. We want to come back and recreate the same food we have experienced. Q2. Are the recipes easy to follow or does one need to be a somewhat experienced cook? I would say the recipes are terribly simple and very easy to replicate in Indian kitchens. Q3. Who is your target reader? Urban Indians, of course! But apart from the metros this includes cities like Chandigarh, Ludhiana, Indore, Goa and Pune. Basically, wherever the ingredients are available. I have given a list of stores across the country at the back of the book which have stocks of ingredients that might be needed. Q4. What are some of your personal favourite recipes from Travelling Diva? It is very difficult to pick a favourite since I like all the recipes that are in there. I eat the eggplant salad all the time. The grilled halloumi is one of my favourite midnight snacks and I’m also very fond of the salad with pumpkin. Q5. Do you intend to launch another cookbook in the near future? I haven’t planned anything. I thought Italian Khana would be my last book, Travelling Diva just happened. I am a restaurateur first: TV shows and books follow later. However, I never say never. Q6. Your advice to aspiring masterchefs? Do not replicate someone else’s style— always use your own imagination! As told to Navni Kumar
