prologue this book is organised around my interest in the way the eye moves around an object from the it’s beginning to it’s end

space

what makes a space a space is the experience one gains from the many different viewpoints of a structure. cut into the cloud form seen at the left ate many circles that vary in size , creating interesting interior spaces and depth in the structure.

light is an opportunity for distortion. in this photo , the absence of light in addition to it presence allows for a range of values to be distributed across the form photographed. it abstracts the original shapes and gives life to a new object.

i sense light as the giver of all presences, and material as spent light. what is made by light casts a shadow, and the shadow belongs to light. - louis khan

infrastructure the body of work, pictured left,is composed of 3 different materials.each element in the structure supports another, unveiling the reliance each piece has on one another when it comes maintaining the overall shape.

geometry at the focus of this was the ways with which lines interact with each other in an effort to form elaborate geometries f rom dowels. the dowel model executes this idea as the intersecting lines produce varying angles that complete the composition.

transformation

is the process by which an object attains a wholly new form thats changed directly or through mental insinuation. from this assignment, this idea is expressed through the stretching and carving conditions that the original cube undergoes from the beginning of th project to the end.

prefabrication to be prefabricated is to be made individually and put together wholly. it allows for quick customizations of basic frameworks and creations that are timely in assembly.

The images to the left are both structures that were combined with other components in order to bring to fruition a full composition.

texture is a way of initiating individuality in a structure. it can inform the way an architect navigates the design of a building and command what part of a site is observed by the eye first.

texture is the most enduring and ubiquitous underpinning of form... certainly a calming, meditative and appealing world for both the eye and mind. - lynda lehmann

grid in architecture, a grid is a place of direction for elements that are both organised and disorganised. it is the foundation for developing relationships between many things in a site and supports the creative vision of a site.

surface

is defined as the facade of structure. it’s composition is influenced by the texture, colour, and design of a project. it typically takes the shape of a rectilinear plane, but in this assignment the surface is curved.

DATUM

a line or plane that delineates items in space. it is a point of comparison and a unifier between all things in a composition.

datum

is the unifying element between things that are different from one another. one may even argue that all things in architecture are organised around some form of datum. the physical figure photographed left acts as datum for the shadows projected from it.

it is self-evident that the tabula rasa of modernization favors the optimum use of earth-moving equipment inasmuch as a totally flat datum is regarded as the most economic matrix upon which to predicate the rationalization of construction. - kenneth frampton

scale

like light, scale is a means of distortion. to scale is to increase or decrease in factor and the photos below (read left to right) exhibit that change.

dialogue

is a way of re-purposing the past uses of a structure in an effort to make some sort of commentary about it’s change. Adversely, it can also make a statement about how the usage of certain architectural elements that have remained static. the larger photo to the left executes this message perfectly as it depicts how the usage of columns for support hasn’t changed throughout time.

mass

is anything that occupies space in time. it’ can be both developed and undeveloped depending on it’s viewer and always hold’s potential to evolve with time. here, mass is depicted as pinched piece of clay sitting on a flat surface. it’s static in it’s position yet active in the many curves formed from each individual pinch.

void

is the absence of mass at different points in a composition. with no mass, there is no void, just space. in order for it to exist, it must be accompanied by some mass that differentiates the two. in the first picture seen left, void is created by the many different intersecting lines. in the second, it is created by two angular blocks that have been carved out and joined together.

materials

are one of the first things observed by a viewer. it easily can change the perception of a site for the better or for the worse. like many other principle in this book, the usage of materials can breeds independence in a structure. in this image, this idea is expressed through the application of styrofoam and tape that contribute to the free-form nature of the project

defamiliarization

redefining the common use of an object. a form of imagining how things should be without respect to societies standards. in the photo, the usage of paper has been defamiliarized in order to create this cloud like form.

context is bred by the relationship between two things that share a commonality. in these images, context come from the fact that the smaller image formed the bigger picture.

structure

provides shelter and support for things inside and outside of its bounds. it is an intermediate zone between individualized design and necessity. in the photo the left, it is used to support the object above the two vertical columns.

symmetry is the consistent mirroring of elements in a site. it brings about harmony and order and leaves no space for mistakes. it is utilized in the image to demonstrate unity despite the contrast in material.

order

exists only because of disorder, and vice versa. from the larger photo pictured left, the form takes and order that is circular in motion. the smaller photograph is of the lincoln memorial, which stresses order through its columns.
