Whether you are new to the area or have been around a while, please take note of the many organizations, activities, and events you can be a part of. Check out the Women’s Club, financial club, Bunco groups, dining-out groups, book clubs, etc. I usually host one fun event each month for our neighbors and magazine partners. If you need additional information on any of these please reach out to me, or any one of the ladies on our Shavano Living staff, listed in the front of each publication. Inside this issue of Shavano Living you’ll discover: … tennis champ Margaret McFarland … avid reader Anna McFarland, and also a great tennis player at Clark HS … Jamie and Ashley Blair and their two adorable children … Linda and Art Chavez and their trip of a lifetime to Italy … Jeanne Rubin, making a difference with pet organization PAWS … and much more. Around Town Clausewitz Law Office Grand Opening Shavano Park resident and lawyer Tiffanie Clausewitz recently celebrated the grand opening of the Clausewitz Law Firm with friends and family.

Pilgrim’s Pantry Thanksgiving For Pilgrim’s Pantry, Thanksgiving Day began at 3:30 am, after three days of prep and pre-cooking. By 10:30 am on Thanksgiving, with the help of many giving volunteers, fresh, hot Thanksgiving meals were delivered to four different southside locations in San Antonio. At each of those locations, many more smiling volunteers served a lovingly prepared Thanksgiving dinner consisting of turkey and gravy, fresh-baked cornbread dressing, mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans with bacon, homemade yeast dinner rolls, fresh-baked apple cobbler, and fresh-baked pumpkin pie. Meals were delivered to individuals and families, allowing them to celebrate Thanksgiving Day.

10 Shavano Living • February 2020

Looking around on Thanksgiving Day, it was hard to tell whether there were more smiles from the volunteers, or from the individuals being served. By the end of that day, Pilgrim’s Pantry had delivered over 1,400 meals to those four southside locations, to the Bunkhaus (a men’s homeless shelter), and to Outcry in the Barrio, a local addiction rehabilitation center. “It is our hope that we brought a little happiness to many of our San Antonio residents this Thanksgiving holiday,” said Mary Alice Ezzell. “Thank you for your support.” Mike and Mary Alice Ezzell and the Board of Directors of Pilgrim’s Pantry.

W H Y J OY C E K L E I N R E A L T O R S ? NOTHING SAYS HOME LIKE FAMILY!

With a combined 95 years of experience, we are dedicated, determined, and understand the importance and impact that purchasing a new home, or selling a home, has on family. We are known for our strong communication and for being there 100% from the beginning to end - and beyond!

Do you fly much? Have you noticed the change over the last few years? I ask, because traveling recently with my husband, I noticed the atmosphere was less than sociable. No one smiles or makes eye contact. And certainly, no one wants to talk. Everyone is intently focused on their phones or tablets. As the plane takes off, we start playing Uno. And what do you know, the lady sitting next to me comments on how nice it is that we are having fun “the old fashioned way.” We chatted until she finally asked the question, “What do you do for a living?” I responded enthusiastically, “I’m a Financial Advisor!” And there it was – the awkward silence. Now I’ve grown quite comfortable with the silence. I’ve heard it a lot over the years and know it’s not about me. I believe it’s the feeling we get for not “finding the time” to do the planning we know we need to do. I’ve found this is especially true for women. Often we lack confidence, feel intimidated or perhaps under-educated about important financial decisions. Of course, I explained that I love my job, because I help people with their goals and dreams. I help with what’s important to them. For instance, I asked, “Do you have children?” The answer, “Yes,” which led to a discussion about college. “Are you saving?” Again, “Yes,” “How do you know if it’s enough?” Silence! And there’s the real question! The average cost today of a four-year public college in Texas is about $26,000 per year and increases at about 5 percent per year. If you started saving at middle school, age 12, you have six years before college. If you could get a consistent 6 percent rate of return on your savings, you would need $105,868 now, or to save $1,738 per month to fund the average college education.* Now I don’t know about you, but that’s more than a couple of car payments, and oh, by the way, your child is going to need a car soon, too. So I ask, do you know if you are saving enough? Are you also saving for other goals – a home, vacation or retirement? Are you coordinating your goals? Do you know when you’ve succeeded in reaching them? Well, we finished our game of Uno (I won.). I made eye contact. I smiled. I spoke and made a new friend. When we landed, I left her with this thought. Don’t let planning overwhelm you. More importantly, don’t procrastinate. Talk to an advisor about your goals, even if it’s not me. I promise you won’t regret it! *Data gathered 5/6/16 Cost of Waiting Calculator, John Hancock Investments. http://www.jhinvestments.com/Article. aspx?ArticleID=%7B9E0B7A93-C99E-49F3-8877-705B9 9945F72%7D

featured family By Jamie Blair

Meet The

Ashley and I have resided in Shavano Park since the winter of 2012. We’ve raised our two children, Hadley (5) and Landon (2) so far here in Shavano Park and love the country feel within the big city that it provides. Our one dog is not only part of the family but the neighborhood, too. Most neighbors often times find Hurley roaming the streets looking to make new friends!

I really enjoy living in the San Antonio area because of its “homey” feel and commonalities to where I grew up in Katy, TX, and what I experienced. Years of traveling to San Antonio from the Houston area to visit family is what attracted me to San Antonio after graduating from Texas State University in 2009. The local atmosphere and comfortability of “home” are what Ashley loves about San Antonio. She was born and raised here and attended Churchill High School. Knowing how important a great foundation and environment is, Ashley had the desire to move back to San Antonio after we met at Texas State in 2007 and graduated in 2009. It was a match made in heaven! Both of our parents now live here in San Antonio, as well. We own and run a sports and recreation center here in San Antonio called Force Sports Center. And we also run San Antonio’s largest volleyball club, San Antonio Force Volleyball Club, and manage over 400 players between operations in San Antonio, Houston, and the Woodlands. We work together on a daily basis and are able to do what we love: work with children, work together, and be involved in something we both are truly passionate about. Within Force Sports Center, Ashley runs a boutique and embroidery business and focuses on women’s fashion clothing and jewelry, aside from the personalization. Her boutique bodes the name Hadley Ashley’s Boutique and she has run it online and in-store since 2012. We’re also partners in the Stray Grape Urban Winery (located at 281 and Thousand Oaks) and have enjoyed building that business for about a year now. Stop by and see us! We really enjoy spending time with each other. We both are very grounded with our faith and “family first” foundation. We are parishioners at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Stone Oak. Our children, Hadley and Landon, are what drive us to be better people and parents every day. Vacations with the kids to the beach, getaway weekends, and even attending some tournaments for work now and then are where the four of us have made some of the best memories over the years.

Taking the kids to Spurs games, high school sporting events, and shopping are some of our favorites as well. Oftentimes, food is a big deal with us! You will typically catch us eating out at Willie’s, Longhorn Café, La Hacienda de los Barrios, or Pericos (all of which are family-friendly with playgrounds). Creating new memories with the kids is what we look forward to the most during a typical week. Coming home to the kids running and giving us hugs is probably the most rewarding/gratifying thing we encounter on a daily basis. As time goes on and the kids grow up, we aspire to start a nonprofit to assist underprivileged youth in sports with a different vision than what they currently have. One day, we both hope to be able to provide half the experience we were given by our parents.

home matters By Trudy Chuoke Lesage

Great for Products the

New Year I want to share with you a great line of products. They are reasonably priced, professional quality, and perform well every time. Zep has been around since 1937 and I keep their products on my shelves and in my home, for all those reasons. I want to talk to you about three cleaners, which will help you take care of some annoying problems. Do you have an AC vent on the ceiling that is dirty? Usually, the dirt is around the vent bleeding out to the ceiling material. If you touch the area around the vent it starts flaking off and that’s a whole new problem. Zep Mold and Mildew Stain Remover is usually sold for removing mildew around the tub and shower. I like it because it requires No Scrubbing! It’s because of the “no scrubbing” rule that it is perfect for cleaning around AC vents. First, place plastic and paper under the vent. Then spray the vent and let it drip dry. Even though you will be tempted to scrub around the vent, don’t. Zep works without your help. The vent will dry white and leave the area looking clean and fresh. If you have colored grout around the tub and shower, it is hard to find products that will clean without stripping the color from the grout. Most products that clean mildew also are bleach-based … and we all know what bleach can do to a colored shirt. It will have the same effect on the colored grout. Zep makes Grout Cleaner and Brightener. This Zep product will deep clean grout lines and remove old stains while not affecting the color. It has a unique spray top that will allow you to squirt cleaner across the tub. You won’t have to get down on your hands and knees. Stand, squirt … no scrubbing required. If I could put a “smiley face” after that sentence, I would. If you have someone sick at your home, you know how fast everyone else can get sick, too. We are accustomed to using Lysol to get rid of germs. We spray, we wipe, and we assume that we just annihilated every little germ on the surface … like the Terminator. But not so. Lysol requires the surface to stay wet for a long time before you kill any germs. Try not to look shocked. Zep makes Quick Clean Disinfectant. It will kill 99.9 percent of germs and bacteria in 5 seconds. This is great for people who

20 Shavano Living • February 2020

have the flu or flu-like symptoms. And this is what I think is best about Zep Quick Clean. Many of you know that I had cancer about 12 years ago. Treatment is tough on the immune system and if you get around anyone that has a renegade germ ... you are going to get what they have. So you learn that staying at home is best. But what if you can’t? What if you have to go to work? Zep Quick Clean would at least keep the surfaces clean. Read the label on the Quick Clean. There are so many places to use it around the house and at work. You can even use it around pets. It’s really a great product. This is your “countdown to Christmas.” Stay tuned for the next segment next week. Oh, and if you need a quick “stocking stuffer,” don’t forget about The Best of Johnnie Chuoke, Vol 11. It has all the hints that we write about each week. It’s great for the new homeowner!

Now to the email … Question: Good morning and Happy Thanksgiving! Somewhere I heard there is something you can put down your toilet to kill roots in the line. Do you know what the product is and where I can purchase it? Answer: Zep makes Root Kill. It’s made of copper sulfate and comes in a 2 lb. container. You will need to put half of the container in at night and flush. Leave that toilet alone for the evening. The next night you need to put the other half in and flush. Again leave the toilet alone for the evening. And that’s it! It kills hairline roots that invade your pipes. Left alone, small hairline roots will grow and break pipes. Use Root Kill at the first sign of reduced water flow. Call me if you can’t locate Root Kill.

Car Care Corner By Rusty Belden

Unfortunately, we meet many of our customers on a day that everything seems to be going wrong. An alarm clock was missed, the traffic was worse than usual, or a situation at work went south. And then … the car breaks down. Few of us budget, much less plan, for a vehicle to break down. We are caught unprepared for both the time away from the vehicles we use every day, and for the financial strain of unexpected vehicle repairs. Not only can car repair be frustrating, but it can also be confusing. For those not technical or without car know-how, one often feels anxious about information received concerning complicated vehicle repairs. Our family at Belden’s strives to educate our customers, allowing them to make the best decision. Our service advisors aim to speak in the simplest of terms so as not to overwhelm the customer with auto repair jargon they are likely to not understand, as today’s vehicles and components can be complicated.

travel tales By Linda Chavez

Italy Roman Forum

Ciao! My husband, Art, and I embarked on our dream trip to Italy to celebrate our milestone birthdays. Meticulously planned by Expedia CruiseShip centers in Alon, we celebrated for seventeen days eating amazing food, seeing breathtaking masterpieces, visiting UNESCO sites, and enjoying the people of one of the most beautiful countries on this planet. We visited 26 towns and five regions, thanks to private-guided tours, day trips, and personal drivers, who would tailor the tours to our preferences. We began our trip in Rome. Obviously, our time in this city was spent visiting the Vatican Museum, St. Peter’s Basilica, the Sistine Chapel, the Ancient Roman Forum, and the Colosseum. But the hidden gems were the amazing Catholic Basilicas scattered throughout the city. We also visited the Borghese gallery, home of famous paintings and sculpture masterpieces. With a private guide, we traveled to Assisi, the birthplace and final resting place of St. Francis of Assisi. In Orvieto, we strolled the narrow streets and saw artisans crafting beautiful woodwork, pottery, and fabrics. Our lunch was as though we were invited into the private home of “Carlo,” where we enjoyed some of the best food Italy had to offer. Our guide, Mauro, was knowledgeable, accommodating, and had a deep knowledge of the historical significance of both of these places. After a high-speed train to Naples, and a tour of historic Pompeii, we enjoyed three days on the Amalfi Coast, one of my favorite places in Italy. We visited Amalfi, Ravello, and Positano, with our private guide, Fabrizio. Our home base was Sorrento, which is a definite return site. Overlooking the Gulf of Naples in the Tyrrhenian Sea, we were treated to one of the most stunning views from our hotel to enjoy aperitifs and fabulous wine. We also ventured to Capri and Anacapri via ferry from Sorrento. Siena was our next stop. This quiet town, home of the famous Palio, steep cobblestone streets and ancient walls, offered a much-needed respite. We were able to recharge in this quaint city. We saw many beautiful cathedrals across Italy, but the Siena Cathedral took our breath away.

ily-owned wineries. As one would expect, the tastings resulted in shipping some of Italy home – wine, Extra Virgin Olive Oil, and honey – giving us a little taste of our trip right here in Shavano Park. We departed to Florence to view the incredible masterpieces at the Uffizi Gallery. With many people in the museum, our private guide was able to navigate the museum quickly, ensuring we saw the highlights. The Accademia, featuring Michelangelo’s David, was just as crowded, however, we got an opportunity to view this enormous masterpiece up close to appreciate the enormity and detail of this perfect sculpture. Day trips from Florence included Pisa and Lucca. Pisa is crowded with tourists taking the obligatory photo of pushing or holding the leaning tower, but we found Lucca to be more suited to our tastes – less tourists and more time to stroll. Our trip was coming to a close, but not before we visited the Cinque Terre. We walked narrow passageways on steep inclines, stairs and hiking trails to see beautiful views of the Ligurian Sea. We decided

against hiking and opted for a ferry between towns, where we enjoyed the freshest calamari I have ever tasted. Our final destination on the Italian Riviera was Rapallo, ending our trip at a lovely seaside hotel. The town’s promenade along the water’s edge was the perfect place to power walk or simply rest with a cup of Italian coffee and people watch – which is what we did after an amazing and active trip. This was truly a trip of a lifetime. Italy has my heart. Ciao!

Margaret McFarland Playing tennis from the age of 7, Margaret McFarland achieved the win for the Northside District Championship in singles tennis for middle school. She started playing tennis in Germany, where her father was stationed when he was in the U.S. Army. The daughter of Craig and Cris McFarland, residents of Shavano Park, returned to the U.S. when she was 11. She started taking lessons and “got serious” about playing at the Shavano Park Tennis Club. She moved over to the Tennis Park at Whispering Oaks for her training. Her coach, Scott Wilber, has influenced her play. “He’s a great role model, giving good feedback on mistakes, correcting in a good manner and he’s caring,” states Margaret. Margaret was named Outstanding Athlete of the Year for 2018-19 at Hobby Middle School and has joined her sister, Anna, playing tennis for Clark High School as a freshman. Her practice is intense. She plays two hours per day, four days a week, with tournaments on the weekends during the school

year. During the summer, practices are 10:30 am- 3 pm with weekend tournaments. Her discipline and dedication pay off. She enjoys playing singles, but if she plays doubles, her partner is her sister, Anna. She not only plays tennis but also runs track. She runs the 400-meter and participates in the triple jump and long jump. She placed fourth in the 400 at District in 2019 and second in the triple jump and the long jump at District. Her favorite classes in school are science, history, and math. She has maintained an all “A” average in middle school and is a member of the National Junior Honor Society. When not on the court or track, Margaret enjoys family time watching movies, TV, and “hanging out” with her family. Her future plans include going to college and obtaining a medical degree so she can become a doctor. When referring to tennis, she states, “Playing tennis gives me confidence and a sense of relaxation – it allows me to be me.” February 2020 • Shavano Living

“What I love about reading is its ability to take me on a journey. Through reading you are able to travel all over the world and experience adventures that would not be possible in the real world,” states Anna McFarland.

Anna is a voracious reader, enjoying both fiction and nonfiction books. She likes realistic fiction and fantasy. One of her favorites is Mortal Instrument, which is about a dystopian society. She also enjoys biographies and enjoyed If I Stay, a two-book series that features a main character, deciding to stay with stepparents, after her own had been killed. Reading has been instrumental in Anna’s educational development. This sophomore at Clark High School is ranked 29 out of over 700 students, currently. Her favorite classes are English and biology. She plans on attending college, hopefully, the University of Miami in Florida. Her parents, Craig and Cris, both graduated from the University of Miami and she has family that live there. She wants to study biology and enter medical school. Anna serves as the Secretary for the Class of 2022 Student Council. One of the goals of the class is to raise money for their senior prom. “It’s exciting to find ways to raise money,” claims Anna. They work concession stands at the basketball and softball games, sell beaded bracelets (some school colored, silver and black) and t-shirts. Anna plays on the varsity tennis team at Clark High School. She plays singles most of the time, and occasionally doubles. She placed second in singles tennis at the Northside District tournament her freshman year. She has a tough practice schedule, playing 5-7 pm, Monday through Thursday and tournaments on the weekend. One of her favorite experiences so far is during Clark’s recent district tournament in October 2019 when the deciding match fell on Anna’s shoulders in a third-set tiebreaker. After a three-hour singles match, she pulled out a win for the team and secured the 29th straight District Championship! The whole tennis team was rooting for her to win. “I love playing tennis. It gives you an opportunity to test yourself and your abilities,” adds Anna. Enjoying time with family, especially at the beach, is so memorable. “My 16th birthday dinner with my family in Miami was a great memory. My Uncle made me a tennis ball cake because second to reading, I adore tennis.” She wants to study medicine because her dad is an anesthesiologist and serves as her inspiration! Loans Between

LOVED ONES

Loaning money to family and friends is a tricky business for many reasons. Taxes are among them. Funds received as proceeds of a loan aren’t taxable if the borrower is expected to pay it back. However, the moment some or all of the debt is forgiven (doesn’t need to be paid back), the IRS will want its cut. This is true for loans from banks and other business entities — including foreclosures, repossessions, voluntary transfers of property to lenders, property abandonment, and mortgage modifications — as well as good-faith loans between family and friends. Don’t be caught off-guard by unexpected income taxes when this happens. Instead, keep the following tips in mind, both as a potential lender or a borrower. Pay attention to your mail An indication of a canceled debt larger than $600 would be the

arrival of Form 1099-C. Any institution or creditor that forgives a debt of that size is required to submit the form to both the borrower and the IRS. If the borrower disagrees with what the form states, it’s essential to work with the lender to correct it before tax time. Also, keep in mind that entities may send the form to the IRS but overlook sending the borrower a copy. Just because a borrower didn’t receive notification doesn’t mean the IRS wasn’t informed. Structure the loan carefully Sometimes the IRS won’t wait for the cancellation of debt (COD) to determine a loan is taxable. This can happen when a loan more closely resembles a tax-sheltered sale or gift. A sale, for instance, can easily be triggered when property passes between interrelated businesses. A sale is also triggered when the property is seized to help satisfy a debt. When it comes to gifts, the IRS is quick to scrutinize family “loans” that are loosely structured. For family loans to pass the tax-free test, they should be well documented with a promissory note and a fixed repayment schedule that includes interest and/or principal and no pre-arranged schedule for forgiveness (or pay-back-whenyou-can). They should also be valued at the market rate, which means the rate should be set at or above the Applicable Federal Rate (AFR) that was in effect when the loan originated. Consider your options Loans between family members are a great tool to help loved ones get ahead. Don’t be afraid to consider them, but also be smart about them. It’s important to work with a tax professional to ensure any nontraditional loans you consider are 1) necessary and 2) structured appropriately to avoid excessive taxes. For instance, you might find that the constraints of a loan can be avoided if the inter-family money exchange falls below the annual gift tax threshold. Other tax-free exclusions can be made for canceled debts that involve the borrower’s main home or mortgage, particularly for those who had their mortgage debt canceled in 2016. Additional exclusions might apply to loans associated with second homes, rental or business property, credit card debt, or car loans. For instance, if the taxpayer is insolvent both before and after the debt forgiveness, then the debt will not be taxable. However, it’s usually up to you — the taxpayer — to prove these circumstances should cancel your debt. Don’t assume the IRS will turn a blind eye when a loan is forgiven and also don’t assume the IRS will consider these exclusions without your persistence.

Jackie moved to the city in 1959. Her family resided on Cliffside and she attended Marshall High School. Twenty years later, in 1979, she persuaded husband, Wiley, to settle in Shavano Park, “because of the schools, security, wonderful acreage, and ‘country feel.’” Jackie “fondly remember(ed) the childhood (she) enjoyed in Shavano and wanted the same for (her) children.” Amanda and Matt Mitchell grew up in a house on Turkey Creek built by their father.

Jackie left Shavano Park for college at Texas A&I, now known as Texas A&M, Kingsville. It was there she met Wiley, who had grown up on a citrus farm in La Feria. After graduation, Wiley served as a helicopter pilot in Vietnam while Jackie received additional degrees from Incarnate Word University, studying home economics and special education. Once Wiley had completed his service, the couple lived in Houston for a time while Wiley worked for an “up and coming” homebuilder.

The Mtchells returned to San Antonio in the 1970s. Wiley worked with Jackie’s father at Alder Electric before starting his own business, Mitchell and Phillips. Jackie taught special education at Austin Opportunity High back in the days “before these students were integrated into the general school population.” Later she moved to Fox Tech High School and taught a culinary skills class, enabling her the majority of her students to find employment right after graduation. Jackie recalls that her mother and grandmother were both “wonderful homemakers and taught (her) to love both cooking and seamstress work.” It was natural for Jackie to share her passion and pass on these skills.

The Mitchell’s children, Amanda and Matt, grew up on Turkey Creek and attended Clark High School. Matt met his wife, Christy, also raised in Shavano Park and a Clark grad, while working as a volunteer firefighter for the city. Matt is currently a dispatcher for the SAFD. He, his wife, and two children, Kendall and Lauren, reside in Boerne. Amanda also went into a helping profession, becoming a registered nurse. She currently works in the ICU at Methodist Specialty and Transplant Hospital. Jackie calls her children her “proudest achievement … loving, caring, compassionate people that are always willing to help whomever, whenever needed.”

Universally, almost all special occasions and events are enhanced with some type of musical performance. Music in all cultures also plays a prominent role as an outlet for a soulful expression of emotions. Music stimulates our intellectual processes and especially our natural creative abilities. It is a skill acquired over a period of time that can be shared and enjoyed for a lifetime. At Texas Strings, founder, Dr. Angela Wright knows it is important that the student enjoy their musical experience by being able to play the kind of music that appeals to them or is familiar to them. Holiday music, movie music, and classical music are great examples of musical genres that are gratifying and fun to play, and gives the student confidence when performing for family, friends, and the community. Texas Strings provides opportunities at recitals and community events for students to demonstrate their talent and to gain confidence in performing for others. Lessons at Texas Strings begin with the introduction of basic musical concepts and techniques tailored to the individual’s maturity level. Generally, a basic beginner level book is provided to the student. The instructor and student will move forward through the beginner level book together at a pace that is comfortable yet challenging for the student. The beginner level book will help the student build their foundation of music reading and music theory concepts. Learning sessions also include activities where students can compose music. Wright realizes how important it is to make choosing a musical instrument a positive experience. Students may come to the studio with a choice of instrument in mind or they may want assistance and recommendations on choosing an instrument. Texas Strings has introductory programs where a student will receive both a demonstration of their preferred instrument and other instruments that may be good alternatives. Also offered to the student is a brief overview of the role that certain instruments may play as solo, accompaniment, or orchestral participants in the musical world in order to help them choose an appropriate instrument. Depending upon the students’ physical size, eye/hand coordination capability, and intellectual maturity, specific instruments may be recommended to start their musical education, however, ultimately the decision is left to the student and parents to choose the instrument. The student’s buy-in on choosing the instrument will ultimately influence their determination in learning to play the instrument.

Call to Action: Is there a budding artist in your family, young or old? A musician, dancer, actor, performer? We’d love to hear from you. Contact Terry Kemmy at terry.kemmy@n2pub.com or call 210-844-1542.

It is very beneficial to allow the student to hold and try to play the instrument of their choice. This will give the student a “hands-on” experience and may help them decide which instrument sounds or feels better to them personally. Based upon any potential physical and maturity related limitations, a student may be encouraged to start learning one kind of instrument and then switch to a different instrument that they prefer. Some students may also want to employ a sampling method by studying several instruments one at a time and then choosing one for a more focused study. Students have studied two instruments at one time. At Texas Strings, the student is assisted in selecting a quality instrument and provided quality instruments with their own private label for rent and sale. It is important that an instrument is correctly fitted to the student’s size in order to minimize the development of bad posture and overly tired muscles and to maximize the enjoyment of the learning experience. Information on the care and routine maintenance of the instrument is provided, as well as any accessories that would help the student be more comfortable and successful.

RUBIN

PAWS Jeanne Rubin and her husband, Jay, moved into the Old Shavano Park neighborhood in 1990, where they lived for 23 years, raising three children along with multiple dogs and cats. As they became “empty nesters,” Willow Wood became their new home. She says, “We decided to make life easy, so we sold our home on two acres with a pool so that another loving family with children could enjoy.” The small-town feel and large lots are what attracted the Rubins to Shavano Park. “The loving/caring environment is what kept us here. The Police Department is always there for you in a matter of minutes, which gives us a very secure feeling.”

Jeanne grew up in Houston and earned her accounting degree from the University of Texas at Austin. She worked as a CPA in various positions, starting at Ernst & Whinney in 1981 and then in many industries full- and part-time, specializing mostly in tax and financial accounting. She married the “love of her life,” Jay Rubin, who she met as a freshman at UT; he is an ophthalmologist at Eye Clinics of South Texas. They have two sons and one daughter: Brian, the oldest, is an anesthesiologist living here in Shavano Park with his wife, Betsy, and son, Theo. Robyn, a CPA, lives with her husband, Austin, in Dallas, and their youngest son, Bobby, is a Hedge Fund Analyst in New York. Jeanne heard about the PAWS organization from a friend and “loved what it accomplished.” Pets Are Wonderful Support is a nonprofit volunteer organization that trains, certifies, and places therapy dog teams in the greater San Antonio area. Members volunteer their time to encourage, support, and comfort people. Their mission is to improve human health and well being by promoting mutually beneficial relationships with animals and using them as examples of God’s unconditional love. Jeanne felt this was an adventure she wanted to be involved in, so she and Pebbles, her Maltese, were interviewed and accepted into the program. Their PAWS certification was received after a six-week training class, mastering rules and commands, and passing a final test.

There are several types of facilities where this service is provided, including nursing homes, hospitals, and schools. Jeanne personally enjoys visiting senior assisted living facilities and putting smiles on the residents’ faces. “We visit a nearby assisted living facility weekly or biweekly and I am proud to say that we reached our 100th visitation milestone. My favorite place is the beauty shop as the residents are waiting to have their hair done and it is the perfect time to bring Pebbles all dressed up in her outfits. Someone will say, ‘You made my day! Thank you so much for taking the time to come visit me!’ Pebble’s tail wags and she does a dance, which makes the residents laugh. It makes me feel so good to see how she makes the residents so happy. This could be their only visitor and/or entertainment all day.” Jeanne encourages others to be a part of the PAWS organization. “It is amazing to see how a pet can console someone who is feeling down and it only takes a small part of your day to make such a tremendous difference in someone’s life.” For more information, visit www.pawsforservice.org.

HE RT HEALTH February is American Heart Month. According to the American Heart Association, heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women in the United States, causing more than one in four deaths. While this statistic is dire, heart disease can be prevented and even reversed if people make healthy choices regarding diet, exercise, and maintaining good health conditions. The steadfast advice of watching your blood pressure and cholesterol, as well as not smoking, holds true and should be followed; however, these less conventional techniques can be used jointly to help make our hearts healthier and stronger. Get Enough Sleep. Getting enough good-quality sleep has innumerable benefits, from aiding in weight loss to improving your memory. Studies have shown a marked increase of heart disease in those who sleep less than six hours per night; experts say we need between seven and nine hours of sleep for ideal heart health. And, consistency is key; maintaining a reliable sleep schedule regulates the body’s internal clock and can help you fall asleep and awake more easily.

Have a Good Laugh. As the old saying goes, “Laughter is the best medicine.” Indeed, it can be one of the best natural “medicines” to improve heart health! Laughter has many emotional and physical benefits, including reducing stress, easing pain and depression symptoms, and boosting our immune system. It also has been shown to expand blood vessels by more than 20 percent, allowing for markedly better circulation and blood flow in the heart.

Wellness for life

Drink Your Java. The proposed benefits of routine coffee consumption are pretty compelling. For example, caffeine, particularly in black coffee, boosts energy levels, which can help sharpen mental acuity and enhance mood, and lowers inflammation levels, which are a precursor to many concerning health conditions. Interestingly, habitual coffee drinking has been linked to lower levels of cardiovascular disease, particularly in women. Floss. This seemingly insignificant chore our dentists nag us about can play a surprising role in heart health. Beyond just improving your smile, flossing daily reduces inflammation and improves gum health, which, in turn, can help prevent the introduction of harmful bacteria into the bloodstream and protect our hearts.
