We are very excited that you are interested in becoming a Bus Driver at Transdev John Holland. As a Bus Driver, you will play a key role in our organisation and within the local community. This brochure will tell you everything you need to know about our driving positions before joining our team.

Life as a Bus Operator

We are meeting the demands of our customers on a day-to-day basis. This could be on school runs, route work, rail replacements, straight shifts and broken shifts.

As a Bus Operator with us, you will be responsible for:

• Uncompromising safety at all times – for yourself, our passengers, the general public and our vehicles.

• Providing a high level of customer service to our passengers.

• Working diligently to achieve schedule requirements and variations.

Broken Shifts

Most Bus Operators at Transdev John Holland Buses will work broken shifts. A broken shift services the peak times of public transport patronage, both in the morning and evening. As such, these shifts are split/broken with a break in the middle. There is extra penalty payments for the broken shift - i.e. the longer the shift, the more it pays (to a maximum of 12 hours from start to finish).During a broken shift, if you live close to the depot you can go home or go out and enjoy the surrounding areas including spectacular beaches, parklands, major shopping centres and more. You can also stay at the depot which has a gym, self-catering, recreation and rest facilitates, plus free on-site physiotherapy services.This is your time and you can spend it as you wish!

Here are some key examples of broken shifts. As you can see from the example below, shift patterns can change from week to week.

Rosters

Our depots operate from Monday – Saturday with access to optional overtime on Sunday. Out of seven days, you will usually have two days off including Sunday. These days are not often consecutive.

Most rosters will include Saturdays so if you are unable to work on this day we suggest you have a conversation with our Recruitment team as soon as possible.

Training

Over a three to four-week period, depending on your experience, you will complete a mix of classroom and on-road training. This is followed by a Driver Coach Program, with an experienced Bus Operator for a minimum of two weeks. The mentorship program can then be extended if you require any further support.

Our training is suited to both experienced and new Bus Operators. The program includes a car licence upgrade to MR (Medium Rigid) Licence.

Our training will ensure that you have the right skills needed before going out on the road.

Where are the available Depot Locations?

Our depots are located in close proximity to some of Sydney’s best attractions, including spectacular beaches, parklands, major shopping centres and more!

What is the Salary on Offer?

The base trainee rate of $29.2740 p/ hour is in accordance with the TJHB Bus Operations Enterprise Bargaining Agreement (EBA). On completion of 12 months service, you will be eligible for a wage increase to $31.4885 p/hour. Experienced Bus Operators with over 12 months current experience and ready to go legislation requirements, commence employment at $31.4885 p/hour.

You will also have access to overtime opportunities, Sunday double time, public holiday rates, acquired days off and 5-weeks annual leave. Allowances will include broken shifts, early starts and cancelled days off.

The Recruitment Process

The application process is simple, but should you encounter any issues, our friendly Recruitment team is here to help.

Up-Front Costs

Once you are offered a position with us, we will cover the majority of costs associated with your placement, but you will be required to achieve a driving history record, Driving Authority, MR logbook and Working With Children Check (which is refundable upon presentation of your receipt), prior to joining our team.

What will you bring?

In addition to a positive customer service attitude, to be successful in this role, you will need to be able to show that you have:

•Australian citizenship, permanent residency or a visa that allows you to work in Australia and obtain a Driving Authority

•Driving qualifications (a C-class driver’s licence held for a minimum of 12 months without any cancellations within the last 2 years)

•A good driving history (i.e. no more than 5 demerit points in the last 4 years)

$80 (refunded by us upon presentation of your receipt having started your shifts).

• Eligibility to obtain a Working with Children Check, and complete all other pre-employment checks such as National Police Check, Australian Work Rights, pre-employment medical assessmentand two x professional reference checks.
