What surprised you most about Wichita, Kansas and the Wichita Independent School? “The classrooms are full of love and happiness. The teacher and student relationship are very close.” -Howard Teng “The thing that surprised me after I arrived in the USA is that people here are far more outgoing than I thought. In China, people can randomly shake hands and talk to people they don’t know on the street or in the church. People here are more willing to express themselves, getting to know different people and making friends. That’s pretty different from China, where people are more likely to be serious.” -Frank Zhou “There are a lot of things surprised me in Kansas. And there is one thing surprised me the most. That is the breakfast here. In my mind, the breakfast is the bread with hot milk and eggs. To my surprise, the breakfast here is also milk but is iced. At first I had iced milk with cereal and I was hungry the whole morning. The second day, the third day still had iced milk with cereal. And I found that all things here except the meals were all iced like water, salad, and something else. All in all, I like Kansas very much except the unacceptable breakfast.” -Cindy Zhang “Children’s way of education is different there from that in China. In there, they don’t have too much homework,I think that children learn about one thing by using hands, especially children under 10 years old . In my home stay, their two child don’t need to do any homework, they just get knowledge by playing with others, and I think it’s a good way to learn about world for children. It’s not only can increase their experience ,but also can increase their relationship with with others. And I think compared with Chinese students, obviously, they are more relax.” -Janet Cao Art: “Dawn in Kansas” by Cindy Zhang

What surprised you most about Wichita, Kansas and the Wichita Independent School? “In Wichita, the vision of sky is wider which make me feel free, for here in Wichita doesn’t have many tall buildings. Differ from China, the sky has various colors. The sky color changes gradually, from now, 4:00 in the afternoon the sky has sky blue, light bean green and white, three colors in all. Besides, although both China and Wichita have blue sky, Wichita has a clearer blue. Today is my first day to visit TIS, I am fascinated by the sky in the morning.” -Louis Yan

“The food here was surprised me a lot. In my homestay family, I and the other three girls lived with a Granny. She always helped us make delicious food and make the food by herself. I found that these delicious food were all made by simple materials, like the things we could find easily in the supermarket, such as the condensed juice. It is fantastic that we could cook simply, quickly and eat happily. In China, we just use salt, sugar, soybean sauce, vinegar and some other sauce. These were unforgettable memories for me in America. I think I might cook the DIY American food for my Chinese friends and relatives.” -Annie Yu

What surprised you most about Wichita, Kansas and the Wichita Independent School?

“I know that Christianity is one of the most essential beliefs in the America, but I do not know that what people do to show their beliefs. On Sunday, my host family took me to the local church. In the church, they sang some beautiful songs and read the Bible. Even we had lessons that teach us what Jesus Christ is and what he do for the people. Besides, the food in America is totally different from chinese food. American food is filled with cheese and sugar.Yesterday, my host family cook the macroni and the cheese, it is a kind of old-fashioned food in the america. And it has five types of cheese in it.they also like mexican food very much. So they have a lot of mexico sources and spice. Additionally, the weather in wichita is really colder than shanghai. It has freezing rain during the weekend, and the view is special and fresh for me.” -Amy Gu

“When I first went to Wichita, the relationship between people surprise me in such a strong way. Everyone here seems friendly; smiles can always be seen on their faces. I went with my homestay to a shop called Quiktrip, for instance, and the workers there will have a good conversation with each of their customers, like they’ll talk about the weather, the food, etc. That’s quite rare in Shanghai, and I really appreciate that.” -Queena Xu Art: “The Night of Wichita” by Amy

The Best Part of Me by Irene

My Hair My hair is the best part of me because everything about my hair is just okay - the length - the color and it is a little bit curled sometimes. I would like a different hair style when I am free.

The Best Part of Me by Alicia My Eyes My eyes are the best parts of me, because my eyes are big and my lashes are long. I also like my eye shape. It is the same as my father’s.
