Although tourists mostly occupy it during the time of the magnificent "White Nights", in late May and early June, when there is nearly a total lack of complete darkness, and the streetlights aren't even turned on, St. Petersburg deserves to be visited for New Year's as well. Its streets and bridges, covered in snow and illuminated with thousands of lights, give the city an even more romantic look, and touring its many museums will be even more enjoyable then since there aren't many crowds at that time of the year. ErmitaĹž, an exquisite museum of culture and history, also one of the largest museums in the world, is surrounded by many locals and their guests awaiting fireworks on that night. When the hands of the clock overlap at midnight, the locals raise a glass of champagne and release hundreds of paper lanterns with good wishes.
