YOUTH NIGHT Knights Creek Evangelical Methodist Church, 2987 County Road 9, Scio, NY 14880. Starts at 6pm on Friday nights. All ages are welcome. Message and prayer, board games and snacks. tf THE WOOLLY BEAR CATERPILLAR Mark Holt, Community Educator, Cornell University Cooperative Extension Allegany and Cattaraugus Counties You’ve seen them all over our beautiful county roads this fall: Orange and black Halloween-colored caterpillars racing to get across the road. The “woolly bear” caterpillar,

otherwise known as Pyrrharctia isabella, is the juvenile form of the Isabella Tiger Moth. The woolly bear is around our area all summer, but they’re most noticeable in the fall as they scurry about. The caterpillars move relatively fast, at up to 0.05 mph. To put that in perspective, they can cross Rt. 417 in about two minutes. The caterpillar eats just about anything, including dandelions, grasses, and anything green. They’re not picky eaters, so they’re likely not racing across the road to find some rare caterpillar treat. So why did the woolly bear cross the road? It is racing across the road on cool fall days to seek out shelter under logs, in tree or rock cavities, or under heavy leaf litter, where the caterpillar will overwinter. The woolly bear caterpillar is rare among caterpillars in that it overwinters as a caterpillar, rather than as an egg or a pupa. It produces a unique anti-freeze or cryoprotectant in its body fluids, so it can freeze and still survive the winter. The caterpillars that successfully overwinter will thaw out in the spring, eat for a few more weeks, then spin a cocoon from which the adult Tiger Moth will emerge and lay eggs, which will begin a new cycle of woolly bears. Can woolly bears predict the winter? Woolly bears are thought to be the most recognizable caterpillar in North America, after a 1948 study by Dr. C.H. Curran, curator of insects at the New York Museum of Natural History. Dr. Curran sought to determine the truth behind the longstanding legend that the width of the brownish-orange color band on the woolly bear could predict the harshness of the upcoming winter. Legend had it that if the woolly bear’s brownish-orange color band was relatively small (with corresponding longer black bands on the ends), it predicted a harsh winter. Dr. Curran’s initial study indicated that the caterpillar might truly be an accurate predictor of winter, though Dr. Curran readily admitted that his sample was small and therefore not entirely reliable. Over the years many entomologists have sought to determine the truth of this legend, without definitive results. However, some entomologists do believe that because the caterpillar overwinters and lives from one year to the next, and a shorter brown-orange color band may accurately indicate a longer, harsher winter, and late arrival of spring, during the previous year. Additionally, some entomologists believe that the brownish-orange band grows with age, and older woolly bears have thicker bands, regardless of current or past winter conditions. So the answer is: it depends on which expert you ask. Cornell University Cooperative Extension Master Gardener volunteers have information on woolly bear caterpillars and many other gardening topics. Contact a Master Gardener for more information: Allegany County: (585) 268-7644 x23 Cattaraugus County: (716)699-2377 x127 or by e-mail: mailto:ccemastergardeners.cattaraugus@gmail.com. f RICHBURG COLONIAL LIBRARY HOURS Mon. 9am-5pm; Tues. WHAT’S INSIDE? When I used to put leftovers in food containers, I often forget the contents, and the food would get overlooked and spoil. Then I thought the trick would be to get the containers that are see-through, so I could readily identify the contents and use them up. This was still not foolproof. This week, I hung a small white board on the fridge, and when a leftover goes into the fridge, it gets recorded on the “menu,” along with the number of servings. I also date the entry, so I can see how long the items have been in the refrigerator. Now, I can see at a glance what to use up first and what can be combined for an interesting meal of leftovers. Hopefully, this will keep me from throwing away so much food! -Karen B.

NATURAL EYE CREAM It is funny you mentioned Vitamin E capsules. I meant to pick up some yesterday. If you break a couple open and mix with a bit of coconut oil, you have the best eye cream in the world. There are no chemicals, and your skin will be beautiful. -Chris W.

CANFIELD’S OUTDOOR POWER EQUIPMENT

SAVE THE RAISE! Years ago, someone taught me this trick for saving. When you get a raise, give your savings or retirement plan a raise, too. For instance, if you get a $50 a month raise, deduct a third for taxes and then put half (or more) of the rest into your IRA or savings account. Do this every year and you won’t miss the money. -B.

814-697-6233 Kings Run Rd. CANFIELDSOUTDOOR.COM Ceres, PA THE LIFETIME COST FACTOR When you are planning to buy a refrigerator with the built-in water filter, a water filtration unit, a printer, or anything else that has replacement parts, check the prices on the “replaceables” first before making the purchase. Our fridge has a built-in water filter. The manufacturer recommends that the filter be replaced twice a year. The cost for one filter is approximately $35! You can get several whole house filters for that amount! Also, some printers are priced very low because the manufacturers know that they’ll get you on the cartridges. -DT

JUST LET THEM KNOW We let friends and family know we are working out more these days at home. Since then, when folks are getting rid of equipment, they ask us if we are interested, and we are! So far, we have been given a very basic but working exercise bike and an ab roller. We had to duct tape the handles on the bike and cover the seat, but both were free. We use them several times a week. -Dorothy L.

GARAGE DOOR OPENER PROBLEMS If your automatic garage door keeps opening as if there is something under the door when you are trying to close it, dust off the “electric eye” beam. If that doesn’t work, dust off the area on the ceiling where the wire connections are connected to the box. Many times, spider webs will cause the opener to malfunction. -Gayle K. in New City, NY

FALL GARDEN CLEAN-UP CHORES By: Lynn Chimera, Cornell Cooperative Extension Master Gardener It looks like our extended Fall is coming to an end. Now that the weather is turning colder and the frosts are coming hard and frequent, follow these gardening tips: -As your annuals fade, pull them out roots and all. It’s too late to bring in annuals to overwinter. They have been weakened by the colder weather and will not do well. -It’s not too late to plant spring bulbs. -If you save Dahlia tubers, the best time to dig them up is after the plant has been blackened by frost. Let the tubers air dry for a few days and gently brush off the excess soil. Store them in a cool dark place in peat moss or wrapped

individually in newspaper. Check them once a month or so and remove any with signs of rot. -Any perennials that get mushy after a frost should be cut back. It’s always easier to cut back Hosta before they get frosted and turn mushy, but since we have had some hard frosts already you may have to cut back soggy foliage. The blossom stems are a harder consistency and will persist through the winter. If you leave a few blossom stems showing (I usually cut them to 6 or 8 in.) it’s easy to tell where the hosta is next spring. Hosta come up late in the spring, so the blossom stems will prevent your digging in or stepping on the wrong spot before they come up. -Most perennials with seed heads like daisy, rudbeckia, echinacea and astilbe can be left up. The seed heads provide food for winter birds and look great poking through the snow. The exception would be any plants that you want to prevent setting seed all over your garden. I always cut back native snakeroot and ageratum for that reason. -Don’t cut back foliage from perennials like day lilies and heuchera; their foliage provides crown protection during the winter months. -In general the amount of fall clean up you do is up to you. Some feel total clean-up is best including raking fallen leaves off beds. I tend to leave fallen leaves. Leaves provide winter protection and a home for beneficial insects and larva, especially during recent winters when we haven’t had a solid snow cover. You do, however, have to rake off the leaves in the spring before perennials start growing. -However, ALL diseased plant material should be removed and discarded. -Since we’re not sure what type of winter we’ll be having I’m giving extra protection, in the form of leaf mulch (chopped up leaves), to newly planted trees, shrubs and perennials. Without a blanket of snow to protect them the chance of the roots heaving or becoming dry is much higher. I have been spreading a 3 in. layer of mulched leaves in a circle around each plant being careful not to touch the stem(s). If you don’t have any mulched leaves “borrow” some from neighbors. There are piles of them at curbsides. -Once the ground has frozen you can add more mulched leaves right over newly planted perennials for extra protection. -Collecting these already mulched leaves and storing them over the winter is an excellent source of leaf mold next spring. They can be kept in open plastic leaf bags in the garage or just put in a pile in a far corner of the garden -Be sure to use mulched leaves as whole leaves will matt down and can be damaging to plant crowns and will not decompose as readily. -It’s important to clean your tools before storing them for the winter. Any dirt left on the tools will increase the chance of rust. Once cleaned, a light coat of oil rubbed on the tool will help keep them in good condition. fb CHECKING DEALS I belong to several of the deal sites, such as Groupon, Living Social, etc. One thing I am finding out is that these don’t always have the cheapest price when it comes to their “Goods” section. Now I always compare something I am thinking of buying by checking the price of it on eBay or other websites that might also have the item. Several times I have found it to be less expensive by quite a bit on the other sites than on the deal sites. -Julie

NATIONAL UNWANTED MEDICATION COLLECTION PROGRAM Thirty-four McKean County Residents delivered medications to the Drug Enforcement Agency’s National Unwanted Medication Collection Program on Saturday, October 26, 2013, at the Penn State Extension Office in Smethport. Over 5 garbage bags were collected and sent to an approved medical waste incinerator for proper disposal. The event was sponsored locally by the McKean County Sheriff’s Office, Penn State Extension, and PA CleanWays of McKean, an affiliate of Keep PA Beautiful. Unused prescription medications should not be flushed or washed down the drain, because the residue from pharmaceuticals affects fish and other aquatic species and could find their way into human drinking water supplies. Penn State is committed to affirmative action, equal opportunity, and the diversity of its workforce.

Roger Sager and Bryan Goodrow, McKean County Sheriff Deputies, show some of the unwanted medications collected in Smethport. f

9 WAYS TO RAISE FUNDS MORE EFFECTIVELY Fundraising is how many nonprofit organizations manage to stay afloat. There are scores of fundraising opportunities for clubs, organizations and companies of all sizes. Carefully chosen and planned fundraisers can help nonprofit organizations solicit more donations and ensure their mission statements become a reality. focus their fundraising efforts in an effort to better connect with potential donors. 1. Define the needs of the organization. Before you can effectively raise funds, you should establish the end goal of the fundraising effort. Figure out the group’s budget and expenses and how much money you hope to raise to keep your organization afloat. 2. Create a message. Once you have defined your needs, articulate your goals into language that can be shared with others. Include why donors should donate, such as how this fundraising campaign will help the community or a specific person. Tapping into a people’s emotional connection to a charity or event may lead them to be more responsive to your fundraising solicitation. 3. Create long-standing relationships. One of the most important things fundraisers can do is build deeper relationships between prospective givers and the organization that is doing the fundraising. Stronger relationships may bring in repeated financial donations and even some people willing to lend their voices or talents to the organization’s efforts. Solid relationships also serve as a building block for other contacts and word-of-mouth donations. 4. Build your prospect list. The closer an organization is to its donors the more likely those donors will give when asked. Start your prospect list with those people you know the best, including family and friends. Move outward to colleagues and acquaintances. Don’t be shy about contacting people on social media. 5. Gather information. Find out about various fundraising opportunities. You do not need to reinvent the wheel. Many companies specialize in fundraising, including retailers that have fundraising arms of their companies. You could sell merchandise and receive a portion of the profits for your organization. Certain fundraising methods are more familiar to the community than others, such as coupon books or cookie sales. Familiarity may lead to bigger donations. 6. Avoid hosting too many fundraisers. It may seem counterintuitive, but fundraising less may bring in bigger donations over the long haul. Public enthusiasm can wane when organizations are constantly fundraising. One or two big fundraisers may have more impact than several different events throughout the

year. 7. Have receipts or acknowledgement letters at the ready. Individuals will need a confirmation of the donation so they can deduct such contributions from their taxes. Acknowledgement letters serve this purpose, and the IRS even requires organizations provide such letters to donors who give gifts of $250 or more. 8. Advertise. Without knowledge of a fundraiser, no one can get on board with your efforts. Advertise as much as possible and solicit volunteers to spread the word. Also, advertise well in advance so people can look forward to the fundraiser and budget ahead of time. 9. Consult with experienced fundraising committees. If a particular group had a stellar fundraising campaign, talk with organizers about what they did. Learning from others’ past successes and failures can guide your future fundraising efforts.

www.moneysaveradvertising.com QUICK BED Sometimes my 12-year-old daughter gives up her bedroom for guests and wants to sleep in my bedroom. After considering fold-out chairs, sofa beds and yoga mats, I came up with a no-cost solution. First, I lay a bath towel on the floor next to the wall in my room. Next, I remove the seat cushions from the two easy chairs in my living room. Then I fold a thick blanket in thirds and lay it across the cushions. I cover all this with a regular single bed sheet and add pillows and a blanket. I end up with an extra bed for free, and my daughter loves this cozy bed. The next morning, I take the “bed” apart and put everything back in its original place. There is no extra storage space required for this freebie. -Debbie F.

ELECTRICAL SAFETY TIPS FOR HOLIDAY DECORATING (MS) -- Everyone has at least one -- the house on the street that lights up in splendor around the holiday season. Decorations are in abundance both indoors and out, and just seeing the house brings on a smile. But as beautiful as it might be, that home may also be a safety risk if the decorator hasn’t followed precautions like these offered by CSA Group: Creativity is key but not at the cost of safety -- Let your inner designer shine, but be sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions when arranging electrical items, such as lights and electronic decorations. Be sure to turn off the electricity to the supply outlet before working with outdoor wiring, and never run an electrical cord through a doorway or under a carpet indoors. Fakes are no laughing matter -- Your next door neighbor dressed up as Santa is funny. Counterfeit decorations are not so funny. Look for the mark from an accredited certification organization, such as CSA Group, on animated displays, light strings and extension cords. Ensure decorations are marked and certified for outdoor use and follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Keep the mood light but not fiery -- Choose flameresistant decorations and don’t place open flames or candles near flammable materials, such as wreathes, trees or paper decorations. Never nail or tack lighting strings to a wall, as this may damage insulation and create a shock or fire hazard. Use insulated fasteners rather than metal nails or tacks that could damage wiring to hold light strings in place. Cozy up -- Keep warm by the fireplace but be sure your gas appliances are in good working order. If the pilot light or flame goes out, turn the gas off and wait five minutes or longer (see the manufacturer’s instructions) before attempting to relight. Be alert for unusual odors or flames when your gas fireplace is on, often indicating that the fireplace is not operating properly. In such cases, contact your dealer or licensed technician for servicing. Overload on food, not watts -- Don’t overload extension cords. Use heavy duty extension cords for high wattage decorations and large electronically-animated displays. For extreme decorators, make sure your house is capable of handling the electrical load of multiple lights and decor. If in doubt, contact a licensed professional to inspect your electrical system.

AUCTIONEER / APPRAISERS Keith Wedge AU003316E LOOKING FOR HEAT LOSS After the first snowfall of the season, my father noticed that snow in one spot on the roof of his house melted before the sun hit it. He asked me to investigate. Crawling through the attic, I discovered an opening through which I could see light and feel a warm draft from the basement. It was the result of shoddy construction. For several years, Dad had been heating the whole outdoors with heat from the basement. A couple of patches and a layer of insulation later, Dad is looking forward to lower heating bills from now on. -L. JUST SAY “NO”! Each year on January 1st, I begin a “no consuming” policy. Of course, I still need non-negotiable items, such as gasoline, food, electricity, etc. But I play a game with myself to see how far I can go into the new year without buying one unnecessary item. I have turned it into a game I enjoy and have added nicely to my savings over the years. This year, I intend to add cleaning out the pantry and freezer by planning meals for the week using what I have and only buying fresh fruit, dairy, etc. -Dr. Terry K.

This year marks the 13th year of Kevin Dusenbury’s Gift of Memory program, which benefits Potter County’s Christmas House. Through Dusenbury’s business, the Virgil L. Howard Funeral Home in Shinglehouse, local residents can contribute presents in memory of their deceased loved ones to the organization, which distributes gifts to nearly 1,200 Potter County children and elderly at holiday time. Last year, well over 150 gifts were collected at the funeral home and presented to the Christmas House for distribution to needy families. Those wishing to make donations of new, unwrapped toys can call Dusenbury at 814-697-6570. Donations will be collected until Friday, December 6. Pictured from left are: Kevin J. Dusenbury, Jr.; Charlene Smith, President of the Christmas House; Kevin Dusenbury, Sr.; Jane Metzger, Treasurer of the Christmas House; Amelia Day; Rowan Day; and Georgia Merrick, Volunteer at the Christmas House.

1. Coat a stovetop griddle with oil and heat over medium heat until almost smoking. Add 1 tortilla and sprinkle 1/4 of the cheese and a few avocado cubes over half of the tortilla. Fold the tortilla in half and press the edges lightly together. Brown over medium heat for 1 to 2 minutes, then turn the quesadilla and brown the other side until golden, about 1 minute. 2. Remove from the heat and place on a paper towel to cool slightly. Repeat with the remaining tortillas, adding more oil to the griddle as needed. Slice each quesadilla into 4 wedges and serve warm on a platter with a bowl of salsa.

NOTICE As you know, we run many reader ads for government auctions, job positions, earn money at home, cash loans, credit cards, etc. Most of these ads come through state and national ad networks. Most of them are selling directories or listings of where to APPLY FOR what is advertised. This information may be available at less cost elsewhere. While these ads are screened where possible, we have no way of verifying the authenticity of their claims or the value of their product. The buying decision must be yours. If you have problems with any of these advertisers, please let us know and we will attempt to get you a refund. Most of the companies we have checked will refund their fees to unsatisfied customers. Read the ads carefully. Some charge a fee, as noted in the ad, directly to your phone bill when you call them. Once again, we can’t verify claims for every ad. Please consider their offer and make a voluntary and reasonable buying decision. Moneysaver Advertising
