More often than not, the love the couple shares ends in tragedy, as it did with the suicides of Romeo and Juliet. Star-crossed lovers have been a theme throughout literature. Take the tale of Pyramus and Thisbe, from which Shake-speare based his tale of Romeo and Juliet. Like Romeo and

Juliet, Pyramus and Thisbe are in love, but because of their feuding families, they cannot display their love openly. They are forced to communicate with each other through a crack in the wall between their side-by-side family residences. They soon grow tired of the arrangement and make plans to meet each other face to face. Thisbe arrives first at the rendezvous point, spots a lioness and runs away, leaving behind her veil. The lioness destroys the veil, and when Pyramus arrives and sees it, he assumes the worst and kills himself in grief. Thisbe soon returns, finds Pyramus and kills herself in grief. There are many other examples of star-

FLU-FIGHTING FACTS FOR PARENTS (NAPS)- Did you know that over 200,000 people in the U.S. are hospitalized each year for illnesses related to the flu, and that the virus kills about 36,000 people each year? Children are more susceptible to the flu, and once they catch the influenza virus, it can spread like wildfire. To help stop the spread of the flu in the home, parents can take four simple steps: 1.) Clean: Wipe down hard surfaces, including toys, counters, toilets and sinks with a household cleaning agent, such as Lysol, to rid them of germs. 2.) Dry: Allow surfaces ample time to dry completely before disinfecting them. 3.) Disinfect: Once a toy is clean and dry, apply a disinfectant to rid the surface of bacteria and viruses. But make sure to carefully read a product’s label for instructions. Bleach is only effective if diluted properly by water. 4.) Remember: Use these tactics for all shared surfaces. Learn more from the cleaning experts at Aftermath, the only national company specializing in crime scene cleanup and sanitizing serious biohazards such as MRSA and HIV. Visit www.aftermath.com/flu-facts or call (877) 872-4399 for more information.

COMFORT FOOD FUN (NAPS)-During the chilly months, many people like to have some warm comfort food with family and friends. To make the most of that idea, you may care to consider a fun if slightly offbeat way to feed a crowd with little fuss: Throw together a delicious little “barbecue bar” and let guests go wild building their own scrumptious dishes. Start with a tray of mouthwatering pork BBQ surrounded by assorted popular toppings for personalized barbecue platters ready to go. Once the BBQ sandwich basics are all laid out, you’ll be surprised at how just a few more trimmings can open up a world of choices for your guests. The Vagaries of Climate Change - Part II By: Mary Lu Wells, Cornell University Cooperative Extension Master Gardener This is Part II of the vagaries of winter weather and what we, as gardeners, can do to avoid the hazard of winter kill. 1. When the ground freezes in early November, mulch all of your trees, shrubs and perennials with 2-3 inches of an organic material such as leaves, woodchips, straw, etc. Do not spread the mulch up the tree trunk creating a volcano look! Replicate the inner tube look. This will keep the soil frozen and prevent frost heave. 2. To avoid a too early awakening in the daffodil beds (daffodils never froze in the “old days” - they do now) I mulch with 6 inches of ground up leaves in the fall. This keeps them sleeping longer, because the ground is kept colder longer. Make sure you mow the leaves before using them as mulch. You don’t want the leaves to form matts that the plants can’t get through in the spring, mowing them will take care of this problem. 3. To avoid wind-burn, plant most evergreens on the East side of the house (or wind break if you have one). Here is where you will find my Holly, Rhododendrons and Azaleas. If your evergreens are on the North, South or West side of your home, cover with extra snow or boughs from your Christmas tree or wrap in burlap. When thinking about new plantings, remember it’s easier to go the East side route! 4. If October is dry, be sure to water the ground well under your evergreens. This will allow them to ‘tank up’ like a camel, before the long winter journey. 5. Late spring frosts can usually be foiled by covering plants when the temperature drops below 28 degrees F. Tossing a sheet over the blueberry bush and strawberry row saved the crop in 2012 for me. Keep an eye on the forecast and if you live in an area that is typically a little cooler then the surrounding landscape, you might want to cover your plants when the temperature is forecast in the low 30’s. It is better to be safe than crop-less. Remember: Mother Nature always wins. So instead of fighting her, adapt. According to some scientific predication models, Allegany County will have the climate of Atlanta Georgia by the end of the century. Imagine that! f EASY: The easy way to find a buyer for items you want to sell is a reader ad in the Moneysaver Shopping Guide or Shopping News.

Been through any quakes lately? I sat in my office, working away, minding my own business, when all of a sudden, the floor started shaking. I looked up, thinking that the custodian was moving something really heavy across the floor overhead. But the shaking didn’t stop. And as it went on, it definitely wasn’t just from overhead. The whole building was shaking! My mind was racing-- “Should I leave the building? Is this what an earthquake feels like? It couldn’t be an earthquake. We never have earthquakes here.” I just sat in my chair, feeling the building shake, listening to the rumble. It seemed like an eternity, but it only lasted a few seconds. That evening, driving home and listening to the radio, the announcer said, “Yes, that was an earthquake we had this afternoon.” I couldn’t believe it! You see, I’ve never experienced an earthquake before. But then there’s lots of things in life you and I have never experienced. Not just earthquakes, but emotionquakes and mindquakes and the list goes on. Discover what to do in times like these. Listen to your life and live positive.

COLE MEMORIAL NOTES THE IMPORTANCE OF EXTREME COLD PREPAREDNESS FOR ELDERLY Coudersport, PA- Cole Memorial is reminding their patients and the community that due to the region’s winter temperatures and wind-chills dropping below normal, serious health problems may occur especially for the elderly, small children and those with medical issues. “As wind speed increases, heat can leave your body more rapidly,” said Angela Ryan, director of Home Health at Cole Memorial. “Extra caution should be taken with elderly people since they are more susceptible to hypothermia, which occurs when a person’s core body temperature is lower than 95 degrees Fahrenheit.” It’s best to stay inside however, if it is necessary to go outside dress warmly and stay dry. Wear a hat, scarf or knit mask to cover face and mouth, sleeves that are snug at the wrist, mittens they are warmer than gloves, water resistant coat and boots and several layers of loose fitting clothing when going out doors. Do not ignore shivering. It’s an important first sign that the body is losing heat. Persistent shivering is a sign to return indoors. According to the Cole Memorial team it’s important to listen to weather forecasts regularly and plan ahead especially, if you are the caregiver of an elderly person. Have an emergency contact person to notify in case of a power outage and loss of heat. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says to compile a winter survival kit for the home to last several days, including: •Food that needs no cooking or refrigeration such as bread, crackers, cereal, canned foods, and dried fruits •Bottled water (5 gallons per person) in case your water pipes freeze and rupture •Medicines that any family member may need •If your area is prone to long periods of cold temperatures, or if the home location is isolated, stock additional amounts of food, water, and medicine •Plan an alternate way to heat the house. However, when using a generator have extra fuel on hand and remember not to run it in the house or near an intake where fumes can get in the house •Blankets •Matches •Multipurpose, dry-chemical fire extinguisher •First aid kit and instruction manual •Flashlight or battery-powered lantern •Battery powered radio •Battery-powered clock •Extra batteries •Non-electric can opener •Snow shovel & rock salt •Special need items, medications, hearing aid batteries etc. “Our Home Health team does their best to ensure that all health or medication needs are met during a weather event,” added Angela. “But overall, it’s important for neighbors to check on senior citizens or people with disabilities during extreme cold weather.” Receive more tips about extreme weather preparedness at www.cdc.gov For information about Home Health Care by CCMH, call 814-274-0384 or visit www.colememorial.org fb AREA RESIDENTS NAMED TO DEAN’S LIST AT THIEL COLLEGE Greenville, PA (01/22/2014)(readMedia)- The following local residents were among the 315 students from Thiel College who were named to the fall 2013 Dean’s List: Kale G. CONSERVATION AGENCIES JOIN IN PRESERVATION EFFORT Game Commission, Fish and Boat Commission complete land transfer for Allegheny River island. The Pennsylvania Game Commission and Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission have announced completion of a land-transfer agreement with Hanson Aggregates BMC Inc. that secures the long-term preservation of Cogley Island, a 10-acre property in the Allegheny River in Armstrong County. Under the agreement, Hanson transferred the property to the Game Commission as mitigation for potential environmental impacts related to commercial gravel dredging in the Dashields Pool, Montgomery Pool and New Cumberland Pool of the Ohio River. A fish survey conducted by Hanson found that the proposed project would potentially impact the habitat of two state-threatened fish species. “Our foremost goal is always to protect an area’s habitat and to work with companies to find solutions which reduce or offset environmental impacts of a project,” said Fish and Boat Commission Executive Director John Arway. “Acquiring Cogley Island and permanently preserving its ecosystem was the best option to offset the potential impact of Hanson’s gravel dredging project. The island has excellent conservation value, including the necessary shallow water and shoreline that supports habitat for rare and listed fish and mussel species.” The transfer of the 10-acre island to the Game Commission came at no cost to the commission, and was approved unanimously in June by the Pennsylvania Game Board of Commissioners. Cogley Island is expected to provide hunting opportunity, particularly to waterfowl hunters, and some trapping opportunities might also develop from the acquisition. The island, portions of which are seasonally inundated, represents critical habitat for nesting birds and wildlife. It is forested with sycamore, silver maple, willow and cottonwood, and has a thick understory. The property is located in Pool 6 of the Allegheny River in Manor Township, Armstrong County. It is adjacent to Ford City and is approximately 2 miles away from State Game Lands 247. “We’re always looking to preserve wildlife habitat for future generations, and happy to add choices for those seeking good, public-access hunting spots,” said Game Commission Executive Director R. Matthew Hough. “Cogley Island certainly would seem to fit the bill.”

On behalf of Pennsylvania’s hunters, the agency thanks you.” Ron Kurpiel, vice president and general manager of Hanson Aggregates BMC, said the company was proud to do its part to create that opportunity. “At Hanson Aggregates, environmental sustainability is an integral part of our business strategy. We strive to operate and grow in a socially and ecologically responsible manner, while minimizing the impact of our business on the environment,” Kurpiel said. “The transfer of the Cogley Island property as a means to help preserve its ecosystem clearly demonstrates this commitment.” f S.
