promptly, couples who will be having their ceremony in a different location from the reception will need to spend more time factoring timing into their wedding day equations. Factors like traveling to and from the site, as well as hunger pangs and potential weatherrelated complications, will need to be considered. Many couples choose to have their ceremonies and receptions at the same site, a decision that makes scheduling much easier. Once the ceremony is over, guests simply go inside or to another area of the grounds to begin the reception. Some traditionalists, though, prefer to have their ceremony in a place of worship and then travel to a separate reception location afterward. Both scenarios are acceptable, but the latter option requires a little more planning. Couples will need to know when the church or temple is available for the ceremony and when the reception hall will be open to guests. Some weddings are held after daily masses or other religious ceremonies. An afternoon wedding may end a few

hours before the cocktail hour begins at the reception site, leaving guests with time to kill before the reception. Couples can try to remove as much time between the reception and ceremony as possible by coordinating with their catering managers. If finances allow, couples can request the wedding reception begin early. This way guests can arrive at the cocktail hour and comfortably mingle among themselves. These requests are common, and many catering managers will be happy to meet requests to keep a bride and groom’s business. If this is not possible, couples have a few alternatives. If the reception site is a good distance away, the travel there may take up the idle time. Otherwise, the bride and groom may need to come up with another plan. In some instances, a family member opens his or her home up to some of the guests, who may enjoy light refreshments. It may be possible to use a cafeteria or gathering space at the ceremony site

hours as well. The hotel bar or a conference room might be ideal spots for guests to kill some time. Couples also can arrange something with the reception hall. While the party room or cocktail area may not be ready until the designated time, the site may have an

for a little while as well. If the photographer plans to take outdoor photos between the ceremony and reception, the couple can invite some guests along to witness the shots or be a part of the photo shoot. Thoughtful couples also can provide other

If you own a van, hire yourself out as a delivery person or mover. Are you artistic? Wrap gifts or make holiday decorations. Play Santa, an elf, or a reindeer. Be a personal shopper or assistant for someone who can’t get out or is very busy. Businesses are looking for holiday help. -Christina in NYC HOLIDAY FLAGS I have always loved holiday flags as outside decorations. I was in need of a way to organize them, so I wouldn’t continuously buy new for an upcoming holiday. To do this, I simply took a multi-tiered skirt/pant hanger and clipped all of my flags to the hanger by season. This has helped tremendously with keeping track of what I have as some get tattered after a season and get thrown away. The skirt hanger helps me keep them all in one place and easily assess my stock. -Nancy R. SAVING ON BABY WIPES Even though many parents are going back to cloth diapers instead of disposables, they often still use packaged baby wipes, adding to the significant cost of diapering a baby. Cloth diaper wipes can be very expensive, sometimes costing a dollar each for what amounts to a piece of flannel fabric to wipe off poop! We’ve found that the white flannel diapers used as burp cloths or diaper inserts can be cut up and used very effectively as baby wipes. One diaper will yield six wipes. Simply cut them into thirds following the seams and then cut each third in half. All the sides can be hemmed, but it’s not at all necessary. We purchased a small diaper wipe warmer that has lasted three years now and keep four to five wipes in it at all times (first they are moistened simply with water). The cloth wipe stays warm for longer than the disposables, and usually one wipe is sufficient for all but the messiest jobs. Simply drop the wipe in the cloth diaper bag or bucket for washing with the diapers as usual. When we are out and about, we keep the moist cloth wipes in a zipper bag in our diaper bag. -Amy

ALWAYS COLOR COORDINATED I wish I had known this when I was younger. White is the color! Buying white sheets and towels is cheaper. They are usually cheaper to buy in the first place, and they also are cheaper in the long run. Whites can be bleached, and they can be hung on the line without worry of fading. Both of these things will make them last much longer than colored sheets or prints that either fade or go out of style before they are worn. White appliances and plumbing fixtures are also usually cheaper, and they will blend in with your other items. White is always the right color and never goes out of style. Think about other instances when white is right, such as dishes, canisters, small kitchen electronics, and even clothing. -Sue

814-225-4062 Mon.-Fri. 7am-5pm; Sat. 8am-noon. Chipotle Dipping Sauce: 1⁄4 cup Smart Balance(r) Omega Light Mayonnaise Dressing 2 T minced seeded chipotle peppers with adobo sauce Preheat oven to 450 degrees. Line 2 baking sheets with foil. Spray foil with cooking spray. Blanch green beans in boiling water for 2 minutes. Drain and immediately plunge into an ice water bath. Drain when completely cooled and dry using paper towels. Pour flour into a large plastic bag. In a shallow dish, beat egg with milk. Mix in garlic powder, salt, black pepper and cayenne pepper. Place panko breadcrumbs in a separate shallow dish. Drop beans in bag of flour and shake to coat. Remove beans and shake off excess flour; set aside. Pour flour remaining in bag into egg mixture and whisk until smooth. Working with about 5 beans at a time, dip beans in egg mixture, turning to coat. Remove from mixture and place onto panko crumbs, gently coating. Transfer coated beans to prepared baking sheets, arranging beans about an inch apart. Spray top of beans lightly with cooking spray, holding can an arm's length away from the beans. Bake in center of oven for 8-12 minutes or until panko crumbs are golden brown. Serve with Chipotle Dipping Sauce, prepared by combining mayonnaise and chipotle peppers with adobo sauce. Yield: 6 servings; about 7 beans and 1 T Chipotle Dipping Sauce per serving. Per serving: 100 calories, 3g protein, 14g carbohydrate, 4g fat, 0g saturated fat, 0g trans fat, 19mg cholesterol, 275mg sodium, 1g fiber, 2g sugar. Baked "fries" make it even more appealing to eat nutrient-rich green beans.

Green Beans Among World's Healthiest Foods (NAPSA)-Scientists studying vegetables are finding out more about the long popular green bean. Not only do the pods contain fiber and vitamins C, K, A and B, but the latest research shows they have more antioxidants than other foods in the pea and bean families. Registered Dietitian Tammi Hancock recommends eating fresh or frozen green beans to maximize nutritional value. "At 31 calories and plenty of nutrients per cup, they're a great choice," Hancock says. For a tasty and nutrient-rich side dish, prepare green beans using Smart Balance(r) Butter Flavor Non-Stick Cooking Spray, a hearthealthier alternative to butter. In addition, donations from community members, surrounding organizations and the event sponsors such as the local Moose Club, Raymond Richar Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6611, Balsam Real Estate and Corner SelfStorage, for a total of $4,744 raised. All proceeds were donated to the Cole Foundation for the Patterson Cancer Care Centers’ patients that require financial assistance for unmet medical expenses. If you wish to develop a community fundraiser or make a donation to support health care in the community, please contact The Cole Foundation at (814) 274-5520. fb DOLLAR STRETCHER TIPS: CUSTOM BODY LOTION I use body lotion after every shower and throughout the day on my hands. Therefore, I go through a lot of it. I love the scented lotions, but they are so expensive. I used to ask for bottles as Christmas or birthday gifts, and then I used it only for special occasions. Then I realized that I could make my own. I now buy a generic body lotion and put it in a pretty lotion dispenser. As I add the lotion to the dispenser, I add drops of lavender essential oil, mixing as I go. I add 15 to 20 drops of the oil. There are many essential oil scents from which to choose. Although the oils are not cheap, they last a very, very long time. I now use wonderfully scented lotion every day for a fraction of the cost. -E.

The Thrill Of The Grill by David Venable (NAPSA)-Here are four tips every grill owner should follow: 1. Never flatten your burgers; you'll lose the juices that keep them flavorful. 2. Grilled red meats need to rest for at least five minutes after cooking. Food covers will protect the meat-as well as your entire barbecue-from bugs, pets and other uninvited guests. 3. Never use a fork to flip your food. You want to preserve those juices and a fork pierces the outside. I recommend tongs for your everyday fare but for ribs, porterhouses, pizzas and big cuts of meat, try Mr. Bar-B-Q Stainless Steel Oversized Spatula from QVC. There'll be practically

nothing you can't move.

Cookbook author David Venable says be sure to have the right tools for the job when you grill. 4. While you can cook your entire meal on your grill-

everything from steak and mushrooms to broccoli and friessmaller foods tend to disappear down the grates unless you have skewers or, better yet, a grill basket. I like the Technique Stainless Steel BBQ Chef's Pan with Grill Basket Lid that's made of tightly woven mesh, so you can roast seeds or even pop popcorn. *** The first long-distance roads in Europe--including England--were built by Imperial Rome for its legions. Some of these still serve as the basis for modern roads. *** If all the worlds water were fit into a gallon jug, the fresh water available for use to use would equal only about one tablespoon.

YELLOWED HEADLIGHT LENSES The headlights on my 2000 Dodge truck were very yellowed, making it hard to see at night. I had seen restoration kits advertised, but they were expensive and some seemed complicated. My husband was at the auto parts store and asked for the price of replacements. Of course, that was very expensive! The auto parts guy told my husband to buy Soft Scrub to clean the headlights. Of course, I went to a local dollar store and bought the off brand for a buck! It was amazing! After very little scrubbing with a soft rag, my headlights look great, and they work much better! -Vi

BEAUTIFUL SKIN To really clean and exfoliate your face, add a couple teaspoons of baking soda to a squirt of your favorite liquid facial cleanser and rub this into your face. Start gently until you get a sense of what pressure works best. Rinse with lots of warm water. I do this in the shower. You don’t need to use an expensive cleanser either. You will be amazed at how clean and glowing your skin will look. Also, your pores will appear smaller. -Lyn DESIGNER WATER I try to drink a lot of water to stay healthy, but I find it boring in taste. To “jazz” things up a bit, I pour fruit juice or Gatorade in an ice cube tray and freeze it. I then add the cubes to my water, which gives it a burst of flavor with very little calories. To use the fruit cubes for water bottles, I use the mini ice cube trays that I find in dollar stores. Now, I drink a lot more fluids with very little calories. -Linda R.

EASY BLENDER CLEAN-UP I read this tip a while back, and I recently tested it. I was both amazed and thrilled with the outcome! After using your blender for “smoothies” and such, remove the pitcher and rinse thoroughly. Fill the pitcher with hot water and one little squirt of dishwasher detergent and return it to the blender base. Put the pitcher lid on, hit the blend or chop button, and let it run for 10 to 20 seconds, depending on the degree of cleaning required. Your blender will be squeaky clean! Be sure to rinse thoroughly and let it drain in the dish drainer. You’ll occasionally want to wipe off the exterior of the blender base. -Sherry H.

How are you transforming life? A journalist was assigned the Lebanon beat. Walking through the bombed-out streets of Beirut one day, he heard some beautiful music coming from a doorway. He wandered over to where the music was being played and there saw a young boy playing a flute. The music was beautiful, but the flute was the weirdest looking instrument he had ever seen. He approached the young boy carefully, but the child stopped playing when he saw the journalist. Then the boy handed the journalist the instrument. It wasn’t until he closely examined the flute that the journalist understood. This young Lebanese boy had found in some field a discarded rifle, re-bored holes in its barrel, and transformed a gun into a flute. The former gun now made beautiful music. Can you imagine what a wonderful world it will be when more of us learn to transform instruments of destruction into instruments of beauty? What can you do today to transform life from whoa to wonderful? A public service message brought to you by

DOLLAR STRETCHER TIPS I CAN SAVE YOU MONEY If you have more time than money in your life, your time can be a “gift” to friends. Recently, friends of mine needed to leave town at a moment’s notice due to a family emergency. They could not afford a pet sitter for their dog, nor could they afford kennel costs. They know I’m an animal lover, and since their dog requires seizure medication every 12 hours, they remembered that I once told them that I’d be happy to help out. They covered my gasoline costs. I took care of their dog, and if I have to leave town for some reason, one of them is happy to water my plants, turn lights off and on, etc. Let your friends know you’re happy to help out with these kinds of chores. You’ll save money and have the benefit of a true friend taking care of your pet or home (versus a total stranger). I’ve found that many people feel as if they’re “putting you out” by asking for this favor. Stress to them that both of you benefit in the end, and it’s just a great way to save money. -Teri K. THE CIRCLE OF LIFE: COMPARING BABIES TO SEEDS By Carol Sitarski, Master Gardener, Cornell University Cooperative Extension Sometimes my mind wanders to the strangest thoughts, usually while I am driving. Where I live, it takes me an hour to get anywhere. After driving for a time, Photo: Colleen Cavagna maybe out of boredom, my mind starts to wander. Yes I know, that is wrong but I can’t help it. On one of my mind vacations, I was thinking about the seeds I was going to start indoors and then I had this marvelous revelation that seeds are like babies. The way our world works is full of wonderful mysteries of life. How did all these things begin? How did all the creatures and plants learn to interact with each other? How did plants develop? No matter what you believe in how our planet evolved you have to admit it boggles your mind when you really start to think about how life on our planet intertwines with everything. How can a baby be compared to a seed you say? Well let me give you some examples. First a tiny fertilized egg that has all the genetic information inside it (as too how tall it will grow, hair/eye color, etc.) attaches to a woman’s womb and starts to grow in a warm, soft, inviting environment. The egg grows an umbilical cord so the growing baby can receive oxygen and nourishment from the mother. A tiny fertilized seed falls to the ground where it too has all the genetic information inside; as to what kind of plant it will be, how tall it will grow, what color it will be. It too is nourished by its mother, mother earth, being kept warm by the sun, fed nourishment from the rain, soil and oxygen from the air. It too attaches itself to the soil but with roots as it grows. As the baby grows in the womb it starts to grow tiny nubs that become arms and legs. As a seed sprouts its roots become the legs and leaves become the arms. After nine months, a baby is born into the world. After sometimes months of germination, a plant is born into the world. Wow isn’t that amazing! But wait there are more similarities. As the baby grows, the parents give care by feeding, rocking and protecting it from harm. As a plant grows in the wild the rain and soil give nourishment, the wind rocks the plant and other plants nearby can also help protect attack from bugs and illness by sending out pheromones. If the seed is grown by a gardener then they feed, care, and protect the plant. Just as a baby grows into an adult so does the plant. The baby blossoms into an adult, goes out into the world, and reproduces. A plant reaches maturity, sending out blossoms, produces fruit and then reproduces. Sadly, as the grown baby grows old a time comes when they leave and so does the grown plant. “There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven: a time to be born and time to die”. Now you know why I think babies and seeds are alike, what do you think? And so the circle of life goes on...... fb

DOLLAR STRETCHER TIPS: THE COOKING TEAM Every month, my girlfriend and I get together and cook for the month! We shop the day before, split the bill in half, and we cook for five hours the next day. The meals usually last us one to two months. We both have a two-year-old child, so cooking during the week is hard. It is so nice to have a wonderful dinner that you heated up in less than an hour! KEEPING SQUIRRELS OUT I live in an old townhouse and squirrels were getting into my attic from the adjacent house. The brick dividing wall was stepped as it went up to the attic peak, and there was no way to close the small gaps where each brick met the roof timber. I trapped and released a never-ending stream of squirrels until (thanks to a tip from a friend) I purchased dried blood meal from a local nursery and sprinkled it liberally along the dividing wall. Although dried blood meal is virtually odorless to humans, the smell apparently repels squirrels. It can also be used to keep squirrels from digging in the garden or flower containers, although it has to be renewed frequently when used outside. -A.
