da v e h a mm e r With three decades of basketball and athletics leadership experience under his belt, Hammer is hardly a stranger to building winning programs. He served as athletic director at Coldwater High School (Mich.), where he also coached the boy’s basketball team from 1997 through 2002. His career highlights at Coldwater include a Class B semi-final berth in 1999 and a Class B Coach of the Year award in 1999. During his five years as basketball coach, Hammer led the Cardinals to a 66-45 record, including school records of 24 victories and a winning streak of 18 games in 1999. Before heading north to Coldwater, Hammer was an assistant coach at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas, from 1989 through 1993. Working with Mustangs head coach John Shumate, Hammer helped transform the team from the league cellar to the Southwest Conference championship and an NCAA Tournament berth in 1993, finishing 20-8 overall and going 12-2 in the conference.

Hammer’s college coaching experience began at Delta College (Mich.) as an assistant from 1978 to 1980. He left for a year to assume head coaching duties at Bridgeport High School (Mich.). Hammer, however, returned to Delta College in 1981 as head coach. He tallied a 57-24 record during his three years and led the Pioneers to an Eastern Conference Championship in 1982. He left in 1984 to become an assistant at the University of Michigan. During his four years in Ann Arbor, Hammer helped the Wolverines earn four NCAA tournament berths and two Big Ten Championships with an overall 100-27 record. Hammer also served as an assistant coach at Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene, Texas, from 1988 to 1989. Hammer graduated from Central Michigan University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science in 1970, and went on to earn his master’s in educational administration at CMU in 1976. His daughter, Amy, is an educator at Caro High School; his son, D. J., is a retirement plan consultant at P & A Group in Buffalo, New York.

coach hammer’s view: “Brett’s our only captain this year. He has improved his understanding of how to play the game and, over the last two years, he’s been committed to building up his strength and endurance. Brett averaged 10.9 points-per-game last year and was our best 3-point threat; he also led the team in free throw percentage at 86%. We’d like to see Brett increase his scoring in the 14-to-16 ppg range this year, and with that continue to be a voice in the locker room and on the court that will help our younger players develop.”

coach hammer’s view: “Ryan was a high school all-stater who has a real high basketball I.Q. He has a very good feel for the game. Once he gets the full grasp of how important the weight room is to his progress, he’ll make a nice guard who is good in the open court and plays at a relentless pace.”

14 Bryan Mitzner

coach hammer’s view: “We are counting on Bryan to be in the playing rotation this year after spending his first couple of years recovering from a severe injury from high school. We’re looking forward to contributions from him over the next few years because he does a nice job with his positioning on defense, and he can score the ball — around the basket as well as stepping out to 3-point range.”

But he’s a natural athlete and already this year we can see that Zac has improved his strength and that he better understands when to shoot it; now we just need him to get a better feel for when to use his dribble to bring out more of his individual skills.”

He’s our leading returning scorer at just over 12 ppg, and I really believe he has the potential to be an all-conference player. He shoots a high percentage from both the floor and the free throw line and he’ll rebound it at both ends. Austin’s an very unselfish player and a great teammate. Kolin is a little under-sized to be a power forward in our league, but he has a solid game down low and can power through people and has good shooting ability. He’s a persistent player who has the mentality to be an aggressive rebounder. Kolin knows he has to play with a sense of urgency because there’s only this year for his collegiate career.”

coach hammer’s view: “Kail worked hard on his off-season conditioning, and coming in this year he was our best-conditioned post player. He’s learning how to play the post at the college level; he has the body for it, and now it’s just learning every day. This and next season the goal is to get him more playing time so that he can contribute. Every day he comes in with a great attitude; he sees that he has a long way to go, but he’s working very hard at improving every month. The “Adopt-a-Saint” program provides Aquinas College alumni, family and friends with an opportunity to have a tangible, positive impact on the Aquinas experience for the young men in our basketball program. A donation to the basketball program permits the purchase of athletic gear (shoes, travel gear, sweatshirts, polos, etc.) needed by our student-athletes and also helps cover the cost of trips to elite NAIA tournaments. “Our goal is to have each member of our team receive two pairs of shoes, one game-day travel suit and one game-day travel bag,” Coach Hammer explained. He added that the cost to outfit our team is $250 per player and with 18 total roster spots, the total cost is $4,500. “Ideally, we’d like to find at least one sponsor for each of our team members,” he continued. “We believe with your help we can accomplish this goal.” What do you receive for your sponsorship? • Satisfaction of knowing you had a tangible, positive impact on our student-athletes • Recognition in the men’s basketball media guide • An Aquinas College men’s basketball T-shirt • A handwritten letter of appreciation from a team member • Verification of your tax-deductible donation to Aquinas College men’s basketball program • Five passes to all home games Please consider helping us take Aquinas College basketball to new heights. To participate in the “Adopt-a-Saint” program, please contact Coach Dave Hammer at (616) 632-2478, or email hammedav@aquinas.edu.
