5 tips to a healthy heart
February is designated as American Heart Month to bring attention and awareness to the prevalence and severity of heart disease in the United States.
Did you know that nearly a quarter of deaths in the United States are caused by heart disease? While that statistic is staggering, the good news is that heart disease is often preventable. We can all take simple steps to reduce our risk like making physical activity part of our daily routine, and choosing spices to flavor our foods over salt. Healthy choices coupled with regular check ups to manage existing conditions can significantly reduce, if not eliminate, your risk of heart disease.
A host of mostly small studies show that eating breakfast, as compared with skipping it, makes for smaller rises in blood sugar and insulin after all of the day’s meals and snacks. Smoothing out the blood sugar and insulin roller coaster can help reduce levels of harmful LDL cholesterol and triglycerides. It can also curb the appetite.
Make healthy food choices like more fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean meats, and low-fat dairy products. Eat less salt, saturated fat, and added sugar.
Get at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity every week, plus muscle-strengthening activities at least 2 days a week.

BUILDING UNIT COHESION THROUGH GROUP RECREATION
Why Unite?
There are so many ways the Unite Program can be used. The main focus of the program is to build unit cohesion. The program can be used to develop a new skill, or competency, improve physical fi tness, increase moral, promote interaction, have fun and so much more!
Goals
1. Support SQ Leaders 2. Maximize use of FSS Facilities 3. Measure Impact 4. Provide maximum fl exibility to SQ commanders
Program Development
1. Ready to Execute (RTE): FSS Related events should be considered fi rst as they are pre-approved and easy to implement. This also keeps funds on the installation. 2. Unit Developed Program (UDP): UDP’s capitalize on opportunities in the local area and require prior approval from the AFSVC. Approval may take up to 30 days. 3. Volunteer/Free: Charitable work provides a cost-eff ective team building activity that allows co-workers to see each other in a new light and can make a real diff erence in your community. Free events do not need approval, but information still needs to be captured.
