FINAL MAJOR PROJECT STATEMENT OF INTENT Name: Tim Wan Blog Address: www.t-wan0811fmp.blogspot.com Rationale Idea driven design solutions focusing on typography towards a range of printed outcomes. To work on a range of live and self initiated briefs individually and collaboratively that allow me to develop my design practice, project management and typography skills while challenging my ability to meet client deadlines and requirements. I aim to work on research driven projects for the commercial, cultural and the creative industry, producing a range of promotional, branding and editorial high spec & production design solutions for print. Design Disciplines / Creative Development Editorial - Typography & layout for printed distribution Art direction & project management – developing my ability to work collaboratively to produce high-end professional design solutions, while managing my own design practice, blog documentation and meeting deadlines. Type design Print production – special print finishes, stock considerations, printing techniques. The conventions of publication design – bookbinding, layout, typography, information /data, research driven. Promotional materials for commercial and cultural subjects. Photography & studio lighting for documenting development and final design solutions.

Practical Skills / Workshops – what, why and when? Bookbinding and production - to develop my skills and understanding on the construction and conventions of a publication and itʼs production values.


Print production – expanding on my understanding on print finishes, stock considerations, digital printing and alternative printing techniques and processes. The practical and theoretical methods of developing a typeface. Further workshops to develop my typography and layout skills & understanding.

Brief 1: ISTD Fakery

Rationale: Interpret the word Fakery, demonstrating innovation ideas through the use of a printed design solution(s). Work must be type driven, which offers me the platform to develop my skills with type & layout. I intend to experiment with type and layout, exploring the subject of fakery to produce a print based design solution.

Brief 2: D&AD The Partners

Rationale: Live brief with aim to produce the branding and promotional materials for a travelling exhibition. This brief has an interesting subject matter and potential for me to produce work for an exhibition, also offering scope to develop this further.

Brief 3: BA Graphic Design yearbook. Deadline 4 weeks Collaborative with Ed Webb, Liam Hine & Vicki Simpson Rationale: To develop a winning concept and design direction for the 2011 Graphic Design yearbook, through to project managing, sourcing potential printers to overseeing the production side of things. This will test my design skills working with other designers as well as being an opportunity to get work professionally printed.

Brief 4: Garry Barker Publication [Pitch]

Rationale: Experiment with the conventions of a publication, working within the fields of art & exhibition and meeting client’s requirements and deadline.

Brief 5: Branding, promotional and look book for Laura Stubbs

Deadline

2 weeks

Rationale Develop the branding design direction and promotional materials including the look book for fashion student Laura Stubbs. This would allow me to work on a live brief collaboratively with people of a different creative field such as photography, project manage and art direct a project from initial ideas through to production and test my ability to meet the clientʼs requirements and deadline.

Rationale Brief that requires an on going depth of primary & secondary research on the subject/theme of my choice that relates to my interest and design context. Open brief for a range of design solutions potentially for both screen and print output.
