CONCEPT: The concept title for the Fine Art yearbook is What We Cannot Say. This is a term developed from the end of year exhibition title Tacit Knowledge. Tacit knowledge itself is knowledge that cannot be transferred by means of writing it down or verbalising it. It has been explained as ‘know how’ and is applicable to fine art in the sense that you cannot simply be told how to become a successful artist/practitioner.

My paintings are about a process and the act of doing, but underneath that there is the imprint of emotion. Blue to me can represent a range of emotions. The process remains the same, but the stains represent my varying emotions.

DESIGN DIRECTION: From the outset, our design direction has aimed to be flexible and fluid with a high level of contingency within each graduate showcase and every double page spread. The use of a twelve column grid for a square format publication allows for a free-looking set of layouts that maintain a professional edge whilst complimenting the discipline of fine art.

Throughout the publication images are fragmented and often reappear multiple times across each spread. This idea has been developed in order to reflect the concept’s focus on troubled communication and how there is difficulty in transmitting tacit knowledge in relation to the discipline. Typefaces are deliberately light so not to detract from the imagery on show.
